They started off true punk band and evolved into punk/pop! Still one of the greatest bands to ever see live!
Went to see them on July 1st at Hyde park London and it’s safe to say they are one of the best live bands they have passion to play unlike any other band live
They are great live apart from EVERY TIME i’ve seen them they drag out Hitchin’ a ride for wayyyyyyyyyy too long!!!
Please do EARLY Green Day. Dookie is what you should role with.
*roll
yeah no kidding, this new Green Day is basically just poppy arena rock with melancholy lyrics, there is no punk in this at all
And there's no way you never heard this before! This is kind recent and play in every speacker ever existed all around the world.
Dookie is the shit hahaha pun intended
Exactly
Definitely should have done something from dookie
LONGVIEW
Green Day are one of the bands who made pop-punk popular in the 90s.
Their overall sound has changed a lot over the years, but they did start out as punk.
I just call them rock these days, but some of their newer stuff does still have that classic punk energy.
Green Day - Burnout, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case
All of these are classics from Dookie you absolutely NEED to react to
This more of the evolution of greenday. Need to back to 90's greenday.
Should've reacted to something from "Dookie".
Agreed
@@basedsalty6970 Or Kerplunk or 39/Smooth. Kerplunk! was my favorite.
@@MightyPee yes out of all the choices why that song I'm shocked really. They've done so good on this week and I've had a blast watching all the reactions. They actually did a really good job on there picks.
@@basedsalty6970 Totally agree :)
Anything Nimrod and back. Welcome to Paradise would have been been perfect.
I like this song, but I feel like starting from Nimrod, their pop punk sound became less pop punk and more power pop or something. But who cares... punk is such an inconsistent label.
Green Day really has some worthwhile songs, though I was expecting Jesus of Suburbia, this is good too.
Honestly, I think Vin would find Jesus of Suburbia interesting.
My favorite song of all time
early green day was punk(between albums, 39/smooth - nimrod). later green day( like Warning & albums after) got more poppy. try longview, welcome to paradise or basket case from their album Dookie(their breakthrough album)
dragonfistX200 they didn't got more popy but less punk there's a difference. And warning is an amazing album
eva kacjan true it didn’t get any more poppy get less punk. You can’t call this a pop song lol
1989-1997 Green Day is punk, 1998-Current Green Day is alternative style basically
I’ve got to say, I love how you guys break down the lyrics and what could be their meaning. You guys definitely have an appreciation for the written word! Very cool!
What about the line about "making peace with a stone"?
I think that means that the guy in fact died, and they weren't in peace the last time they saw each other...
Thanks for sharing this
You should react to The Clash. They mix punk with Jazz, reggae, rockabilly, ska.
Their lyrics are still so relevent today. They inspired so many bands that are still around today.
I'm sure you will like them and discuss about their lyrics :)
React to Basket Case, please. It's from Dookie
This song always gets me right in the heart 😭
Checkout one of these: Burnout, Welcome to Paradise, Having a Blast, Longview.
Thanks for doing this. I love this song.
their earlier albums have the punk sound. as most ppl here are saying do something from dookie
While 21 Guns is a pretty good song, it's not the classic Green Day sound.
They went through a really poppy phase, but older albums like Dookie as well as newer albums like Revolution Radio make for some great listens if you're looking for punk.
That being said, I myself refer to Green Day as post-punk or "modern punk". Some people call it pop-punk, but that's kind of a paradox in my opinion.
Anyhow, different people have different definitions for punk, but for me it's mostly just about being rebellious and political in your lyrics.
Hopefully, you'll get to some Rise Against. Bricks, Life Less Frightening, State of the Union, Give It All, Tip the Scales... plenty to choose from.
Rise against "Hero of war"
Rise Against - Violence
Savior, Prayer of the Refugee, Re-Education Through Labor. Good songs as well.
Behind closed doors, Broken English, Six ways till Sunday, the Eco terrorist in me, Architects, Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. but honestly yeah Prayer of the Refugee would be a good choice
The point of the song is, "don't aim for a soldier's funeral, stop fighting."
Thanks for sharing this. Definitelly love the message of this song 😊😍 Peace 😘😙💕❤
It's a story of man during his time in a warzone, "Did you try to live in your own? When you burn down the house and home" = after burning the home of some innocent war victim, did he managed to live through it? "Did your stand too close to the fire?" = Did you put yourself on the shoes of the people that saw their home burned?
Honest reaction love it❤️
You really need to hear "21 guns Cast version"
Green Day is an amazing group, they are very versatile, they can do punk, rock and contemporary, caught them for this album, I was amazed, their show was stunning, Billy Joe actually brought an audience member on stage to play one of their songs. It was Incredible.
The later albums from Green Day aren't punk. It's the early stuff that was considered punk. Songs like "Longview", "Basket Case", and "When I Come Around".
Saint Jimmy is about as Punk As You can Get.....
You really need to check out the Bad Brains, Rasta guys who play Hardcore Punk and Reggae.
Agreed
i feel like the song is about someone who comes home after a war and contemplates if it was actually worth it. to me it sounds more like its about someone who lost a good friend in that war rather than a relationship. the verses are about his feelings, thoughts and his experiences when he came home and the chorus is him telling his friend that he should have laid down his arms instead of taking the fight and thus dying
thank god it's Friday if Green Day is on the list.
I love pretty much all of Green Days back catalogue, but this song and Novocain are my favourites.
2000 light years away
Enimus Sleepus
Coming clean
Pulling teeth
Sassafras roots
FOH
Geek stink breath
The best and most underrated in my humble opinion
Basket case from Green Day is proper punk.
Sepultura - Refuse/Resist and Sepultura - Territory! Pls
personally, i cry with this song
If y’all are really getting into punk I suggest throwing a trip to Gainesville, Fl. up on the ol’ vision board, and make the Hajj to the punk mecca, the annual Fest!
Check out TheFestFl website for the official lineup for Fest 18 to see what it’s all about.
I’m gonna go on a limb and say it’s the closest thing there is to a punk convention.
I've always loved this song just relaxing and beautiful at the same time its an underrated album i saw them live last summer and it was a dream come true they put on one of the best shows you'll ever go to unbelievable crowd inreraction and they played for almost 3 hours its sad they still get hated on by some for not remaining punk that's what happens they got older they wanted to expierence different types of music
redhotchilifan98 21 Century Breakdown is my favourite Green Day album. It so underrated. I love this song it’s one of all time favourite Green Day songs. Omg Billie Joe writes fantastic deep meaningful lyrics
Green Day bit off Mott The Hoople's "all the young dudes."
The band started off as a punk band and progressed with each album morphing into the earliest prototype of a punk-pop and then one of the biggest bands on the planet-Dookie Sold 20 million albums worldwide, and later "American Idiot" a concept album would go on to sell 14 million, this album was also turned into a Tony Award-winning musical on Broadway.
Saw you did a killswitch engage video , you should definitely do This fire burns by them. One of the most iconic WWE theme songs of all time
The misfits- descending angel
can't put your arms around a memory- johnny thunders
Green day was once "Punk" but as time went on they went more top 40, pop.
Yes when they use to play gillman street
Sid Vicious - My way
Bob Marley (6 February 1945 - 11 May 1981)
Noel Redding (25 December 1945 - 11 May 2003)
John Rutsey (July 23, 1952 - May 11, 2008)
Ed Gagliardi (February 13, 1952 - May 11, 2014)
This song is not much of a punk but they still give a message as they always do, and that's why people love them. If you want to know their punk side listen songs such as "Basket Case", "Jesus of Suburbia", "Minority"... They are such good songs and you feel the vibe of punk so hard..
Moonspell - Night Eternal
That sounded more like britpop than punk.
Thank god
My sisters' friends' brothers' funeral song because he died in afghanistan and till this day gives me the chills.
21 guns is like a song about the time of death where you dont get another chance to start over
Modern Punk and more commercial they started raw but to keep album sales going they got softer but cool lyrics and arrangements. Can you please react to Blaze - Life and Death deep lyrics i can relate to. Also try Accept - Dark Side of My Heart, Kill the Pain and Crossroads.
I really want you guys to check out some of Geen Day's earlier work which some say is more "punk" than there later work. The album that made them big is called "Dookie" as you mentioned in the video. My favourite songs from there and also my suggestions to you guys are "She", "Welcome to Paradise", "Longview" and "Basket Case". I will be very happy if you pick one and listen to it.
This song is a part of a concept album
GUNS N' ROSES "DON'T CRY" OR "ROCKET QUEEN."
Damn they are evolution & revolution of punk
This is a concept album 💿. Check their older stuff
Yeah you should have done Know Your Enemy. At least it's a bit more punk than 21 guns which is an alt rock song.
Amazes me that Green Day are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame still.. solid pop punk band.
Green Day - Welcome to Paradise.
maybe the ¨one¨ in the beginning is a ¨suicide bullet¨. a soldier commits suicide and then there's the 21 gun salute.
They left their straight up punk feeling towards more of an alternative feeling after Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) in the Nimrod album. American Idiot was a rock opera with some punk in it, and the 21st Century Breakdown, also a concept album follow-up of Idiot have a mix of rock and roll, punk and alternative. Since their very Political, you should consider an album listen of both Albums. American Idiot changed the scene of music after 9/11 so it would a good listen, plus an amazing album.
Some people say this song is about War and dealing with PTSD.................It does sound like that's what they are referring too.
2000 Light years away
off Kerplunk
Hey guys, there are some recommendations for you:
Hollywood Undead: Paradise Lost, S.C.A.V.A (sequel of PL.), Bullet, I'll be there (sequel of Bullet)
The Pretty Reckless - Hangman, Going Down, Going to Hell, Heaven Knows,
You all should react to Berkeley's on Fire by SWMRS
green day is music, you can clasify them as punk, grunge, rock, what ever you want, green day is real music whith real lyrics
François Peiffer ❤️
Well this is more pop-rock than punk. The early albums was punk. Helloween ☆ Keeper of the seven keys 🎃
That would of been my pick
Ya guys need to do the whole Ministry Sphinctour live album.
Longview wouldve been better
Indeed
Guys if it helps this is from their concept album 21st Century Breakdown that centres around 2 fictional characters named Christian and Gloria that represent the duality of Billie Joe Armstrong’s personality, he’s quoted as saying...
“I look at Christian and Gloria, and it's me. Gloria is one side: this person trying to hold on to this sense of belief, still trying to do good. Whereas Christian is deep into his own demons and victimizing himself over that”
The Offspring - Gotta Get Away?
Green Day cant be described in words they're to good
CheezyChicken guy The only way you can describe Green Day music is amazing. They are so talented and the fact that they been around since the 1980’s and still having hit songs in 2020.
Susie Q from Nebraska? lol Wrong, I do believe she's actually from Louisiana, & still alive. Her name is Susan Garriga, & she's the daughter of Stan Lewis, who passed away July 15, 2018. Stan Lewis was a cousin to D.J. Fontana, the famed drummer for Elvis Presley. D.J. Fontana passed away on June 13, 2018. Stan & Susan founded Stan's Record Shop & the first location was 728 Texas St., on the corner of Texas and Common streets in downtown Shreveport. Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly & Bob Dylan visited and purchased records from Stan's Record Shop. In 1964, Stan Lewis founded and began releasing records on Jewel Records. A Stan “The Record Man” Lewis Music Fest debuted in March 2014 as a celebration of "Stan 'The Record Man' Lewis Day," a city and parish-recognized initiative presented by Shreveport Regional Arts Council, The Caddo Parish Commission and The City of Shreveport.
'Susie Q' was recorded late in the rockabilly era in 1957 by Dale Hawkins at the KWKH Radio station in Shreveport, Louisiana. There are a number of cover version, the most notable by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Welcome to ‘Pop Punk’...
After the Burial - Lost in the Static pleaase🙏🏽
Listen to songs from 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. If you want a really punk rock experience from a Green Day song, that or Kerplunk are my go to albums.
Fugazi or Minor Threat please !
Yes!
yeah you're right, green day is/was a punk, but have been making lots of alt rock songs like this since 2004. for something interesting i would recommend: american idiot, bang bang, east jesus nowhere, long view, st jimmy, basket case
BASKET CASE
Green Day always made a kind of POP-PUNK. But it sounds great every time. And every Album they make keeps one or two Hits here in Germany. You cant compare them with Bands like Sex Pistols. Its more that kind of Punk like Die Toten Hosen here in Germany(who made an album with Ronald Biggs: the Post-Robber, very nice).
X-Ray Spex: Oh Bondage Up Yours!
Green Day are punk (pop punk) but they also do songs outside of Punk. I'd probably go with "Welcome to Paradise".
Next reaction should be 94 hours-As I Lay Dying
Please listen bands from Poland for example: MADE OF HATE - Bullet In Your Head; and Scream Maker - Hitting The Wall
they shouldn't criticize a group of people that have accomplished so much then they ever have
Great song if you haven't you guys need to hear the cast version from the American Idiot play
IceHeartVI no they don’t.
@@BreinGames I didn't ask you
Its 7 troops 3 times shoot in the air
Greenday had a lot of poppy songs after "Dookie"
angra - the shadow hunter
Ya'll need some Melvins
The Melevins just came through here a couple of months ago they were amazing
Green Day - Welcome To Paradise PLEASE!
Green Day - Basket Case or something, this is pop.
Their earlier music was Punk, they evolved over time to a rock band. Try "Basket case" by them.
ua-cam.com/video/NUTGr5t3MoY/v-deo.html
Also this song is part of an album that is a concept album, hard to understand the song without understanding the album concept
If you guys do more of their punk stuff I reccomend American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, or St. Jimmy
VinAnd Sori: punk > rock
hi,
love your reactions. this is a punkrock band from another timeframe. I am raised in a time when sex pistols where a thing. wasn't a fan about the issues then(anarchy and stuff). i do feel connected about the issues today that punkbands refer to. It's more global issues. The members of Green Day came at a point that they have to proclaim their ideas about the wars the americans are fighting. This was a result of a artistic change they made with American Idiots. Therefore it was more happy punk with excellent lyrics.
They're more Pop Punk/Rock (Not bad but not straight up Punk), if you want something more in line with their Punk I'd probably go with some songs like Burnout, Welcome To Paradise, Basket Case, Hitchin' A Ride, Warning, Minority, American Idiot or ST Jimmy ... not all of it has the fast pace of traditional Punk but it's still got some of the elements of Punk
As a huge Green Day fan, I've never liked this song. It's fine. I just think it is boring compared to a lot of other songs of theirs. This song is punk based on the meaning of the lyrics. Vin pretty much got the gist of the song's meaning. When the song was released, I think that it hit hard with people who wanted to bring our military back from the Middle East, and that's why it really got as popular as it is.
Green Day is a touchy subject in the punk scene. They are punk in spirit but they have also gone mainstream. But they use that mainstream placement to spread their political stance. So it is a tricky subject in the punk community. Green Day are a good discussion for punk week on that part. They aren't afraid of speaking their minds and because they went mainstream, they are able to send those messages to people who wouldn't normally hear music like that.
EDIT: Personally, I think Rise Against's song Hero of War is better at describing almost the same meaning as this song.
You really said is it best and nailed it right.....Raised Against is a great band maybe next time they'll get to that band.....
@@basedsalty6970 rise against is the band
@@kylestoddart yes a very good one at that plz check them out
The song just feels like they are laying down their arms and giving up the punk fight. Do they expect us to give them a salute?
@@JayBagent it's not punk from the 90s.... I'm not big on that song myself to be honest I mean it's ok.....there best stuff came out in the 90s
Do some offspring please
You wanna hear some really punk Green Day, listen to Take Back and I Hate You. Ironically, they're on the album with their poppiest ballad, Time of Your Life.
