I'd like to thank Visa for picking this song. It was agonizing when Vin and Sori's only experiences with Green Day were ballads, so it's nice that they've finally done a song with the sound and controversy Green Day have become known for over the years. Now we've just gotta get some 90s Green Day tracks on the channel so they'll realize how important the band was in getting pop punk fully mainstream.

The song is about 9/11 and the mentality of blind servitude to government.
It's basically about the chickens coming home to roost while we continue to wallow in the lie that we were not, through our behavior, the catalyst for these events.
The raining down.... is the the towers falling.
Those dying without a name are the thousands of nameless bodies we needed to identify.
The scores of men wrapped in the flag are the one's who faithfully die for country.
The Eiffel Tower reference is how we attacked France for not supporting our invasion of Iraq? Remember "freedom fries"?
Holiday is a vacation, a break from the everyday reality. He is talking about the beginning of a vacation from reality. The life in which in order to justify our behavior we must believe the lies.
The entire album is about 9/11 and is terrific. It was made into a Broadway play. People criticized Greenday as "sell outs" to the mainstream with this album ..... but isn't that what they always say when you reach that level of success?
Anyway, great reaction. I'd love to hear you do more from this album.

In the past Green Day used the intro line in live concerts for this song, that: "This song is not anti american... This song anti war!"
I heard in an interview with the band that the title means, that while the USA went to a war against Afganistan, the people at home are dont really care and act like they were on holidays.
"Another protester has crossed the line/To find the money's on the other side" this line means i think that politicians always want to legitimate their wars with some morale thing, but theirs true motives are usually the money.
"There's a flag wrapped around a score of men" americans use to wrap their soldiers coffins into the amrican flag, and it was the case when they brought back the fallen soldiers coffins from Afganistan too.
"A gag, a plastic bag on a monument" I think here the monument is the american Statue of Liberty. The politicians have to hide a the symbol of freedom if they want to go war, and this act make a joke or a gag on freedom and liberty.

8:04 Yes. Right after 9/11, there *was* a lot of patriotism. There was also, unfortunately, a return to jingoism, and that's more what Billie Joe is railing against here. If it had just been patriotism, I don't think that this album would have been a rallying cry for people against the American government's policies (particularly towards those in the Middle East). It wasn't just that we'd gone to war; we'd gone to war for all the wrong reasons. We'd fabricated lies so we could invade a country half a world away to topple a dictatorship not because it was in the name of democracy or freedom, but because it would give us a firmer ground to stand on in the Middle East when it came to making deals with foreign governments. After 9/11, we didn't dust ourselves off and realize that we could be the bigger person. We made the conscious decision to let one act of terrorism define how we treat people of certain ethnic groups (which we still see in America today). We made the conscious decision to embrace the warlike nature and spirit our enemies had claimed we always had.
In short, after 9/11, we went out of our way to give the "evildoers" of the world the greatest recruitment tool they could have ever asked for when it came to making their cause against us seem sympathetic. And we've more or less continued that campaign since then. Pre-9/11, we weren't seen as a force for good in the world, but after 9/11, we basically proved that they were right all along.

Id say there was surely patriotism, but as well patriotisms cousin, blind nationalism arose. I'm German and I hate the comparison to the Nazi time that happened long ago. Even if I don't like it, it's still important to remember.
What I am trying to say is, that you look at people individually, and don't compare them to there culture or country and all the mistakes they've done. Sorry for this long text, but I needed it out of my mind for someone to read.

The reference to the Eiffel Tower was because bush said anyone that criticizes the government is not a patriot. The French didn’t agree with the Iraq war (rightfully so), so minions of bush said they were eating freedom fries instead of French fries.
Obviously these people don’t know the history of America. Napoleon sold almost a third of America (Louisiana purchase) and the French played games against the UK and the US won from that.
The true genius of this song is when it says the representative from California has the floor and he criticizes the bush doctrine. It’s referencing that the left were the only ones that had to guts to see the truth of the Iraq war.
This is about as leftist as a song as exists so I understand why both of you don’t understand it.

You have a weird memory of this time in the early 2000s. I'm not saying you're completely wrong on some of the particulars. The fact is, the Bush Cheney administration got us into bad wars and conflicts, somewhat centered around oil but more bent on revenge of old conflicts that had nothing to do with those who flew planes into the WTC. These wars lit fires that couldn't be put out by the time Obama was in office. Not to mention the housing crash that happened right before the 08 election. When Obama was elected the left's attempted role was to try and reconstruct the middle east as well as put down Al Qaeda extremists. THAT's why the troops couldn't just come home en masse. We had a responsibility to help rebuild a place that was destroyed by American right wing patriotic lunacy. We tried, but the damage was done. Drones were used to knock out extremist leaders, but that was never going to work. The thought was it would be more surgical, but all it did was incite more hatred. Israel didn't help, but they never do. ISIS, funded by Russia AND Syria (what? why would Assad fund a group of radicals who would decimate the middle class Syrians who wanted Assad out... ohhhh). The moderate Syrian civilians were crushed from both sides. Who was there to counter ISIS? The Kurds. Their alliance with us over 25 years helped to take out a majority of the ISIS network. Then they were just in the way of Turkey, Russia and Syria. So Erdogan and Putin got together and had a chat. You say the Kurds weren't eliminated? No genocide? Well you're kind of right. The Kurds that survived now live in tunnels in the ground in a northern Syrian forest after their city was leveled into dust by Tukey. The good life, wouldn't you say? A fair price for having allied themselves to the great USA. Even the older vestiges of the right were appalled by this, but none could stand up to Trump's belligerence. If the holy Right had no effect what was the left going to do? Hell, Putin putting bounties on US soldiers couldn't even make Trump upset. Get them out faster so Putin can't pay those bounties!, Trump said. Nowadays the "left" is just a fractured assemblage of right leaning anti Trumpers and radical communist activists, both calling the others demise. I hate being in the middle like this, but I always am. The RIGHT might be even worse off. Trump may just form that new Trump party. I hope he does. The middle becomes a much more definable force with the radical idiots on their own.

Green Day lost pop culture relevance for a few years after dookie, American idiot was massive and they got the spotlight again and solicited their spot in rock history to a lot of people after that. Plus obviously after every new cd there is someone out there listening to a musician for the first time who didn’t know em before .
I heard someone say their first green day cd and their fav was the cd after American idiot, which ehh. It was just cause that was the first one they heard . I think it was Billie eilish’s brother .
American idiot is definitely Green Day’s best piece of art

    • @chrismeadows4216
      @chrismeadows4216 3 роки тому

@@heythere6983 I honestly agree that it's their best piece of art. It's more cohesive than anything before, better than 21st Century Breakdown, and really takes more risks on a lot of tracks than any other Green Day album. It was a very important milestone. That said, Nimrod was extremely good. They did have presence in the 90s other than Dookie. The first 2 albums before Dookie may not have ever gotten noticed, and Insomniac may have been a disappointment, and Warning may have gotten ripped for sounding unoriginal going into the 2000s, but once people could use the internet more efficiently, they should have known American Idiot was a comeback album and not the beginning of the band's career. They'd been around longer than Pearl Jam.

Democrat or Republican, wrong is wrong and right is right. Most of the things with Trump, I disagree with, but there are a small handful of things that I might agree with him on. For the stimulus, I do believe that there are a lot of people that need that money that he says that they should. Now, I also believe that he knew that McConnell would shoot it down, which is why he chose such a high figure, knowing full well that McConnell would not even entertain it. Granted, this was likely a political move to try to make him look like either the horrible individual he is by shutting it down or making him look like a bad conservative for allowing it through. He probably did it because McConnell referred to Biden as president elect and congratulated him. Trump is very thin skinned and vindictive, so we benefitted to some degree from his attack on McConnell.
As far as Obama goes, yeah, I remember bitching about how many drone strikes he sent out to kill innocent people based on flimsy intel. Also, does anyone else remember the Gitmo facility? Yeah, bad is bad on either side.

Its a funny thing. Vin sort of touched on it peripherally. When I was in my teens I was huge on punk rock and was left leaning anti war. As I've gotten older however I've found that the left I knew has died, and has become the war mongering fascistic party I now fear. The party of corruption and corporate oligarchy. The party of enforced will on others. The party of stalinist rule. I haven't shifted my stances. I'm still pro equality, anti war, pro choice (with caveats) but the left has gone so far they've become as bad as the neo nationalists I loathe. Ffs Phil Spencer switched back to Democrat. They have reverted back to the democratic party of the confederacy. I just can not support that. Sure, they drape themselves in wokeness, but they're preaching preferential treatment, segregation, classism, anti Semitism, and open discrimination. No thanks. I stood opposed to that in my teens and I stand opposed to it now.

@@matthewr23 How so? I'm still pro lgbt, equality, medicare for all, and on the list goes. I did however study world history and human psychology and I aggregate my news sources to mitigate my personal bias. The dnc robbed Burnie Sanders of at least one nomination, possibly two. Both of the last two elections the dnc has put forth pro war establishment candidates for president. Biden received tremendous funding from the big tech conglomerates and news corporations. Biden ran the iraq and afghan conflicts as well as the drone war in Libya while he was vice president. The kids in cages at the southern border were built under his administration with Obama. Shall I continue?
Hell, I haven't even touched on the resemblance that black block protesters have with Mussolini"s black shirts in both attire and tactics. The BLM leaders self admitted Marxist beliefs. The willingness of the left to "cancel" anyone who dares disagree with their ideology and literally calling for political re-education camps and lists of conservative supporters to be made by AOC herself. Do you know other leaders that had those sorts of camps and lists? Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao, Kim il-sung, Pol-pot etc. None of these went well you see. The CCP and north korea still have these camps you do know that right? The koreans have thousands of political prisoners, some are born and live their entire (short) lives there. The CCP has thousands of Uyger muslims locked in "Vocational Education and Training Centers" not to mention the political prisoners in other camps.
You see, the left doesn't know when it's gone too far, until millions die. But I can tell you right now. When they start telling you what you can and can not say, what you can and can not do, what you can and can not buy, Who you can and can not listen to, THAT is when they've gone too far. That is why I walked away.

There were too many "moderate leftists" sympathizing or simply tolerating that far left ideology, worse still were the ones afraid to speak against it when they knew it was wrong.
After seeing Bush Jr get elected and all that had wrought, I thought Obama might do something. He just made it worse. Thats when I started looking closer. Drone strikes, disposition matrix, enflaming Syrian civil war, a pipeline to western Europe, etc. He was the same as Bush, turns out Clinton was the same too.
