Green Day has a few songs that people don't recognize how deep they actually are because they sound happy and fun. Billie Joe Armstrong is an amazingly deep writer
( fun feel equals more radio play🤷 they're smart enough to know how to play the game)

Actually, I think "I will always love you" takes the cake in that category. That song is more well known than "time of your life" (thanks to the late great Whitney Houston, all though Dolly Parton wrote it, fyi) but it is a BREAK UP SONG, but NOBODY STOPS TO LISTEN TO THE LYRICS OF THE VERSES. First verse, literally, "If I should stay I would only be in your way. So I'll go. But I know I'll think of you every step of the way, and I will always love you..." All the way to the end the song is about LEAVING, albeit reluctantly. I'll get off my rant now. Lol!

The loose story behind the album is a revolution led by a young couple that has brief success and then fails dramatically, leading to her death and his spiral down after. This is the moment when he gives up, having lost the woman he loves and everything else for nothing.
In the wake of Afghanistan, this hits home. 20 years and thousands of lives wasted on a pipe dream.

The album "American Idiot" by Green Day is their best album as a complete piece and it ended up being turned into a broadway musical. The most popular songs off of that album are "American Idiot" "Holiday" "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" "Jesus of Suburbia" and "wake Me Up When September Ends". Honestly all great songs and reacting to any one of them would be a good choice

Just saw Green Day at Oracle Park in San Francisco, Friday night (Aug 29). I am 54 and have been going to music shows since 1982 when, as a 15-year-old boy, I saw the Who and the Clash at the Day on the Green in Oakland California with my buddies. The show on Friday night was a religious experience for me. I saw Green Day, way back in the day at the Gillman in Berekely CA (when they, honestly sucked). I cannot stress this enough. I know their tickets can be on the pricey side, but if the opportunity comes to see them live it is one that I would suggest you take with a big fat smile on your face! Friday was one of the top 2 or 3 shows in my life and I have been to close to 120 shows over the past 44 years.

They put on a hell of a show. Saw them a bit over a decade ago during the 21st Century Breakdown related tour. At one point, they invited a young fan (maybe 10-12 years old) from the crowd on stage to sing one song as a duet with Billy Joe. The kid nailed it, the crowd went nuts and that kid had an amazing first concert of his life experience.

This song addresses the topic of patriotism. Front man and chief songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong told Q magazine May 2009: "It brings up 21st Century Breakdown in a lot of ways, and the 21 gun-salute for someone that's fallen, but done in an arena rock 'n' roll sort of way."

Saw this comment about the lyrics meaning which is how I interpret them as well, Green Day are anti-war though as are most punk bands so the lyrics are all double meaning.
"The song is about being able to accept the end of something and accept your short comings. The Album that this song comes from, 21st Century Breakdown, is similar to the rock opera style that Green Day tried with American idiot. At this point in the story, the couple that the story/album is about has been tracked down by the police for some sort of crime they had committed together (I believe it was a robbery or something of that sort. I don't remember though.) This song is about realizing that it is the end of the road and being able to accept it. In a nutshell, they got caught and they're screwed and they're okay with it"

Probably their biggest “statement song” is “American Idiot,” or possibly “Holiday,” both from the album titled “American Idiot.” Honestly you should check out the album in its entirety because it’s a rock opera and songs build off each other and sometimes flow seamlessly into each other. The album came out in the early 2000’s as a statement against the Iraq war and as an analysis of the then-current state of American culture and politics. The video for the song “American Idiot” is amazing, and there’s a behind-the-scenes video about the making of it that’s also worth a watch.

Well, what a lot of people don't hear in this is the melancholy over the joy that is in the music... there's this over-arching feel of a poppy up-tempo beat, kinda bouncy. But in the end, it's "ruined" by the melancholy that hovers over it musically. (ruin here not meaning making the music bad, but instead meaning just raining on the happy parade... genius really))

The 21-gun salute, commonly recognized by many nations, is the highest honor rendered. The custom stems from naval tradition, when a warship would signify its lack of hostile intent by firing its cannons out to sea until all ammunition was spent.

Also now... its done to honor fallen soldiers. Beautiful sentiment... but knowing the origins a bit empty

Maybe an unpopular suggestion for Green Day, but check out "Static Age", I think it has a message and a sound that you would love. Also, if you are looking for a more "toned-down" version of this song, you should check out the American Idiot Broadway Cast version; its arranged slightly differently and in my opinion, is killer

If you like 21 guns, you'll like the entire American Idiot album that came before because it's a kind of rehashing of that. The "American Idiot" album is in itself a bit of a rock opera documenting the hopeless of post-9/11 feelings. "Wake Me Up When September Ends", which you have very likely heard before but don't know the name of, is about 9/11.

Guess I'll be the old man who, while I respect Green Day and their continuing evolution, I'll always like their early albums more. Probably because I was in a 3-piece rock band in my youth and their early stuff was relatable-if less mature.

Probably not as much as you think. Sometimes you need a couple "easy" tracks mixed throughout a set just to have a break from the more demanding stuff. (Green Day has been known to play 3-4hr shows.
And then, sometimes-if you're a good drummer (which I always aspired to be)-you perform what works best for the song. Which is showcased well in this example. :)

I really dont't think this is a war song at all, but rather a metaphor for personal loss and regret. Conflict with someone you love, a relationship you've destroyed even though you're still trying, but maybe realizing its too late after all, and just wanting to make amends. Thoughts?
