Billie Joe grew up very poor. His dad died when he was young and his mom worked really hard to raise a large family. Green Day released their first album when Billie Joe was still a teenager. He's been married to the same woman for over 20 years and has a few kids. He truly is a poet even if you don't care for the music.
He is really an inspiration
Mike Dirnt was adopted as a baby, he left his adopted parents home too as a teen. Tres dad still has PTSD and did when he grew up.
When I was reading this I thought you were writing about Billy Joel the piano man
I myself I love green day
@Moelder not clown from slipknot, or munky from korn, or dan from disturbed or kirk from metallica
Green day Jesus of suburbia was made for this channel. You both will love it. Has a cool video too
jesus of suburbia is great. a little long but not too long. . .
YES
Agree!! Do it, guys!
I think the full music video gets a bit in the way of the song though.
@@AhkoRC the best version is done by a 7 year old Japanese kid. Check it out
I actually really like the way Green Day came to fame. There are videos of them playing at birthday parties, high schools and bars early in their careers before Dookie blew up like crazy in 1994. It made me really respect them.
Ok so Green Day is punk but they have become so big that people love to hate on them for (selling out) I think there more pop punk now but they started off full punk anyways I still love them and there live shows are amazing
And they still maintain the general ethos of punk. I was around the scene at 924 before they got big and I've met them a few times. They really haven't changed. They've stayed true to themselves, which is as Punk as it gets if you ask me.
They have a splash of Emo Core to
IMO they started pop-punk and transitioned into a straight-up rock band a long, long time ago.
Great band!
Kyle S. from a sound pure sound perspective, that would be a valid argument.
Never thought you'd do Green Day tbh haha, amazing
Do Jesus of Suburbia, 21 Guns, Basket Case (this one is from Dookie)
Jesus of Surburbia. For sure
how about Christie road while you are at it.
Punk: simple fast repetitive guitar riffs, fast repetitive drumming, lyrics and message is traditionally socialist, anti-power, anti-establishment, sometimes anarchist, generally very raw, unprocessed, simple.
And short songs.
TheAskald unless it’s the decline by NOFX.
Actually true punk is about anarchy, it’s theexact opposite of socialism. It means no government, no system, because the system creates war and poverty.
Marco Creen i agree, it is more alternative
U are simple, fast and unproccessed
Having seen them in concert I can say 100% that Billie Joe is an amazing showman! They really want you to enjoy and be a part of their shows. He is known for bringing fans up on stage to play music with them. At the concert I went to he had a 12 year old come up on stage and play the guitar part while Billie Joe sang. He's amazing!
This song is off the American Idiot album which was more of a rock opera than their traditional harder punk sound like Basketcase from Dookie. He's a great lyricist. You might find the song American Idiot interesting lyrically and the song She is really good. Punk tends to very politically/socially motivated. It tends to be simple, musically, more like pop so it catches you and gets stuck in your head. Please check out The Ramones, The Clash, The Misfits and The Sex Pistols if you want to start back at the roots of punk.
American Idiot is a great album! There is a Broadway play based on this album. :D
im seeing that musical in 2 months!! so excited!!!
We went to see this show a few years ago. It was incredible, you'll love it!
Green Day is a punk band but did release a few radio friendly singles like this.
Jesus of Suburbia is a song to check out or American Idiot... lots to discuss on both
Punk represents un-inhibited youth, rebellion and speaking to issues concerning the dark elements not often discussed.
Should have done something from Dookie: Longview or Burnout

Agreed on all. I think they'd really enjoy Gone Away.
@@EvilPear912 Unfortunately, they reacted to the FFDP version of Gone Away. I think that the Offspring version is WAY better and I think that they would have been better off reacting to it.

Perfect name for a green day album...
Peter M So harsh!! Lmfao 😂😂
Yes!! Thank you for doing this song. I've been requesting it for a while now. ^_^
From one of my favourite albums tbh. Thank you for this
Green Day for sure has a lot of passionate haters in the metal community, but I actually like some of their songs and performances. I also like the very hated Creed by the way. Some good Green Day songs are the classics like Basket Case, Wake Me Up When September Ends, and When I Come Around but other good songs are Welcome to Paradise, Blood, Sex and Booze, She, and Going to Pasalaqua.
fosho!
The metal community is one of the main reasons why rock music suffers the way it does as a genre, they don’t think anything other than metal is worthy, they are very snobbish in terms of rock, if there is someone hating on a rock group, it tends to be the metal heads, I have so many friends who are metal heads and they are the most insular rock fans, if it’s not metal they absolutely despise it and trash it, they hate any other form of rock being popular or mainstream, it’s very sad really, I know not all metal heads are that way but the vast majority are.
I don't hate them, I have been a lifelong metal head of all genres of metal since 1990... I still own their CD singles from Dookie when it was released!! This song here they reviewed, the studio version has a fucking LOT of complexity to it that most people will overlook as they are not musicians, but those who know, will hear its depth!!! Bass as one example, it cuts short a lot to allow the kick drum to be heard through the mix.
21 Guns
@@Penddraig7 The metal community is diverse. Many of us love Green Day.
Green day is always awesome 😎
Oh my god!! I recommended green day to you and now im watching your reaction to green day!! Im so happy thank you so much Vin and Sori
I think what's truly beautiful about this song is the fact that we all feel this way at some point and we can relate to the song and hearing all these people sing about the same things or similar ideas that you've been battling and just knowing "we made it" is the true beauty of this song... never give up and keep hoping keep walking down your lonely road and at some point you'll find that thing that crosses your path which will lengthen your road for as long what is planned for you.
It brings a tear to my eye knowing how many people forget there's a road and believe they're stuck in this endless cycle but in reality its a straight line and it continues it just depends on whether you stay going or not...
2000 light years away
Off Kerplunk
One of their best songs Billie was 17 when he wrote it for who would eventually become his wife!
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life by Green Day was such a huge song and some feel it was the point where they threw out all the rules and abandoned the strict confines of punk. I also think Sori will love it!
Ehhh it was more Dookie when they threw out the rules of being punk cuz most of their fans thought they sold out and that was when they got banned from Gilman Street, which was a strictly punk club and where green day got their start
must be amazing to hear your song sung back to you by so many
I suggest watching the video of the crowd singing Bohemian Rhapsody before a Green Day concert. It's insane. They even sing the guitar solo.
The Misfits - Last Caress
You should react to Nirvana You Know You'r Right, it's the last song Nirvana recorded before Cobain died
Not really, it was a mash-up made years after Kurt's death from out-takes, demos and such that the rest of the band did NOT want released as it was not a real song, but her majesty Courtney Love made it happen as she (at the time) owned all the rights to the Nirvana recordings, now it is Kurt's daughter Francis Bean Cobain who owns the right's to Daddie's music - yet she hates Nirvana and Grunge so will not do anything with it until her savings start dwindling... Want NEW Nirvana, go check out the fan made 'alternate new albums' on an alternate timeline in which Kurt did not die!!! These were made using demo recordings and other unreleased parts of songs from live shows or whatnot and real fans added the rest of the band or remixed things to make them real songs and real albums in continuity!!
GREEN DAY has so many incredible songs..Your about to go down a very special road
Holiday from Greenday. But the Tokyo Live Version!!!!
The Offspring - Self esteem
Green Day also had an album prior to Dookie that was called Kerplunk, and while Green Day started out somewhat punk they evolved rather quickly more towards pop with punk elements, which made them a lot of money so who could really blame them, for punk I would go more with stuff like the Butthole Surfers, Black Flag, the Dead Kennedies.the Dead Milkmen, Circle Jerks, early Dirty Rotten Imbeciles and early Suicidal Tendencies, then with Dirty Rotten Imbeciles album Full Speed Ahead and with Suicidal Tendencies Lights Camera Revolution and The Art of Rebellion you have full on thrash which is why both were considered crossover bands, Method of Destruction was considered a crossover band as well but never hit as big as even DRI, probably because their song lyrics were a lot more offensive and controversial
cerebral failure can't leave out The Misfits during the Danzig era 🤘🏻 one of the original punk rock plus idk if it's true but I think the Ramones and The Who were considered punk? But yeah u got the right idea
@@Corpse_Scary_Stories definitely the Misfits and the Ramones, and groups like the Who, MC5, Iggy and the Stooges, the Kinks, Blue Cheer etc were considered the Godfathers of Punk
Daaamn dude, you really know what you are talking about
@@jhonnycagexrage7458 I like music in most of its forms, but I discovered Suicidal and Dirty Rotten Imbeciles first then I delved back into the genre, Dead Milkmen have some hilarious stoner punk tunes, M.O.D. has some of the most offensive songs ever recorded, especially on their album USA for MOD, in the 90's while Slipknot was getting things together they opened once for Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, was a great show considering there was almost more band members in the building than there were paying customers, also Joey Jordinsen had a punk side project called the Rejects around that time as well, they had some crazy assed songs as well, you should be able to find most of the demo I have here on youtube under the Rejects - Love Songs for People who Hate, check out the tracks, The Radio Song, Alice is Dead, I Used to Be In Love, You Suck, there are a lot of great punk tracks on it, the demo has more lol, here is the link to the Radio Song, you can find the rest of the album on this guys channel as well, ua-cam.com/video/qE-RiH-Mk4w/v-deo.html
An album before Kerplunk too, Dookie was their Third album.
Love this live version!
”Jesus Of Suburbia” next! It is really great.
From the same album.
Green Day is a punk band per the style of music but not necessarily the definition of the genre as "punkers" are supposed to be anti-mainstream excess and anti-establishment; so, I think a lot of people say they "sold out" because of their commercial success. Green Day went from independent label Lookout! Records where they released their debut LP "39/Smooth" and sophomore effort "Kerplunk" but decided to go with Reprise Records for their third album in '94, "Dookie". That album blew up and had tracks from it all over the radio and the music television stations, especially "When I Come Around" and "Longview" as well as "Welcome to Paradise," which was re-recorded on "Dookie" but originally was released on "Kerplunk." All three are catchy, very radio-friendly songs. And that may be what drives some of the angst from fans of the punk rock genre. I'll listen to them if they come on, but I wouldn't go out and buy a Green Day album.
And I don't fault you for queuing them up first when diving into the genre because of their popularity, but I highly recommend one of the bands that started it all or at the very least heavily influenced the genre and the bands that came after them, The Ramones and The Stooges... so sorry UK, the Sex Pistols and The Clash were not the first to do so, but they are also worth checking out none the less.
If you do The Ramones, "Blitzkrieg Bop" off their '76 self-titled debut LP is a must. 'Sheena Is a Punk Rocker' and 'Rockaway Beach' off '77s "Rocket to Russia" are also two Ramones classics. One Ramones song you may have heard parts of is 'I Wanna Be Sedated' off their 4th album, "Road to Ruin."

Pennywise bro hymn is a must do!!!
Not their best song though...
Vin you should see the youtube clip of Green Day crowd as they sing Bohemian Rhapsody in London ...Just the record playing over pa and the crowd sings entire song its wild...As for what makes Punk its always been about political and social anti norms ...usually angry teen angst type of thing or anti pop music...
Jay K!! Hi buddy :) That video of the crowd singing Bohemian Rhapsody is one of my favorite UA-cam clips. Gets me all emotional haha
Abbie_Parent Hey crown 👑...Its amazing how they never miss a beat

This song makes you feel good. Because a lot of people thought they were walking alone. And found out they weren’t.❤️🌼👍😃much love
I wasn't at that show, but it did bet to see Green Day almost 2 years ago, on their revolution radio tour, and truly is a moment I will carry with me forever. a sold out arena of 22,000 people, singing and chanting in unison. id give anything to go back and will never forget.
Try D.R.I , they're a crossover band ( punk/thrash) from the early 80s, they still play shows today
Love me some Green Day. Corey Taylor from Slipknot/Stonesour is actually a big Green Day fan and has done a couple of acoustic covers of Green Day songs like 'She'.
Good stuff, as always!
It’s just great music ! What a great group ! PEACE TO THE WORLD !!!!!
Opeth - Demon of the Fall!!
White Zombie - "More Human Than Human"
Yep sori would love the backing vocals :). Not sure what Vin will make of them. Backing vocals are only on the unedited version.
But hell yeah any white zombie would be good. Devilman or Black Sunshinr could get a good reaction too!
I love hearing the crowd sing 😀
Honestly I understand how it feels with a crow like this or smaller. A good 15 years ago I was at a concert by a Scottish band called Travis and there was this one magical moment where the singer came back from back stage with only an acoustic guitar and toild the audience to be silent and that the guitar was not plugged in and would come away from behind the microphone if everyone was silent. The crowd got silent and he did as he told us and started playing Flowers in the Window. The crowd was dead silent until the chorus, everyone was singing along with that and as soonas that was done the crowd was silent again,
To this very day I still goosebumps when I think about it or tell people about it, it truly was a magical moment for me.
Need to do their song Basket Case! It's got a pretty metal intro. Sick palm riffs.
Pop-punk, not metal
Morbid angel - chapel of ghouls
That's what makes it punk. A song about something sad, or messed up that makes you feel energized, powerful, or happy. And people getting together to share in that state.
If you want to talk about concert experiences and Greenday, you should check out their performance at Woodstock 94 which turned in to a huge mud fight. Don’t think there’s any other bad that would have handled the situation as well. Epic concert!
Soundgarden Like Suicide / The Day I tried to Live / Head Down / Blow up the Outside World PLEASE!
EPICA-KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (live)
Yes, More EPICA Please!!!! :D
There are a few songs by green day worth checking out, "Wake me up when September ends" you two will definitely appreciate, "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around" Are a lot of fun, "Longview" has an iconic bass line that you have to hear. there are a whole bunch more that are great but we wont push you into the b-sides yet
9:03 I know what you mean. I was at Woodstock 99 and when Korn came out I was about 4 rows from the front. I turned and couldn't see where the people ended on the horizon. Was so psyched when they played the "new album" songs. Also, this guy gave me some of his water because he loved my Tool shirt, lol.
jesus of suburbia is great. a little long but not too long. . . great song for you guys
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Well this was a pleasant surprise.
These guys put on one of the most fun shows in music, and the love between them and their fans is palpable. All are welcome, whether you can sing along or not. The worst you might experience is a lot of f-bombing and naughty talk, but it's all in good fun. The Punk moniker, for Green Day, is about the attitude they have towards rules and authority, much more than the music itself.
Wasn't expecting this reaction but this is great. Green Day is still my favorite band even though I'm not really into the "pop punk/pop rock" genre anymore. Definitely check out more. I will mention that the American Idiot album (which this song is off of) is a concept album, so there is a story behind it. I think the song title makes more sense in the context of the story. The first two songs on the album is where you should start, American Idiot and Jesus of Suburbia, respectively.
A lot of punk fans think Green Day sold out in 1994 after Dookie, as they signed to a major record label. Some of their songs from the 90s I recommend are Welcome to Paradise, Westbound Sign, Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?, and Good Riddance
Edit: If you do Jesus of Suburbia, don't do the music video, just lyrics
You need to listen to the whole album to really appreciate this song, good live version though
Hi, I love your videos, please do more
Love those colors on you @Sori
If punk rock -> Rise Against. Very political, very emotional and thought provoking band.

Aww Reading Festival, some of the best memories of my youth! UK has the most amazing festivals! Glastonbury is worth checking out as well.
Yo, if y'all are doing punk reviews now (Punk week would be cool, I'm just saying) why not go for The Clash or Anti-Flag? Not that I mind green day for sure. More good songs than bad with them IMO though I'd rather have heard y'all listen to American Idiot as a first experience with them.
Please keep asking for that!
I would rather prefer something from "Dookie" or "Insomniac" though
Stay Free with The Clash is amazing. Also Guns of Brixton, Lost in the Supermarket and of course London Calling.
I would say that Green Day is Emo Core/Pop Punk
lol there's a ton of hate with London Calling even in the Punk community and for good reason.
AF isn't exactly shall we say, Punk. They are pop punk at best. Their lyrics don't hold the ideology.
The Offspring - Gone Away
Offspring - Self Esteem and The Clash - Guns of Brixton are well, well made iconic punk songs.
Boulevard of broken dreams is the title of a famous painting with iconic stars.
Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia (The song I really want you guys to react to)
Green Day - Are we the Waiting / St. Jimmy (It is one song, kind of split in two songs, Sori would certainly LOVE it)
Green Day - Basket Case (A very fun song, ♪ no doubt about it ♫)
3 great songs, please react at least to one of them.
*edit:* Pleeease do the [Live] versions
Their early days were more punk than their newer music. The newer stuff is a bit more poppy.
The first album is a masterpiece, not one single bad song there (in my opinion)
The last album is Punk.
I wouldn't say their newer stuff is all that poppy. They just haven't been much of a crossover band like they used to be in the American Idiot/21st Century Breakdown day. When they'd have those singles like Holiday, Wake Me Up When September Ends, and 21 Guns playing on commercial radio
Hey guys I've been watching your videos for a long time now, but it's the first time I write to you (probably because I'm from Argentina and English is not my mother tongue), and I really enojy watching you analyzing songs. I like korn an metal in general very much so I can appreciate music in a very similar way than you do, I'm also a christian, so when you say some quote from the bible it brings an extra to your videos. I want to say that green day is my favorite band beacuse when I heard this song on the radio I was really sad and it helped me a lot, and green day made me feel better and learn music professionaly so I save money to buy my first electric guitar, also I had the opportunity to watch them live and to know the vocalist Billie Joe in person, it's an awsome guy, so I'm very happy to see that you wacthed this song live and want to thank you for all the well spent hours doing this channel, I send you a big hug to both and I hope you read me, God bless you guys!
Portishead - Glory Box - Live At Roseland NY
This must be the start of punk reviews! . . . Defintely a decent song by Green Day, but not one of their 'punkier' ones. . . Curious to hear your thoughts on these types of songs!! 😁
Vin - I think part of what makes punk "punk" is the attitude behind it. The earliest punk bands sang a lot about being against the establishment and rules and conforming, and the music they made wasn't polished. The songs were sloppy, the vocals were raw, and the production was typically not great. . . So that's why people will say Green Day isn't "punk".

Check out the studio version of this song too for its amazing production. Green Day is always stellar live too.
You wanna head real punk?
“Misfits - Last Caress”
Green Day is primarily known as pop-punk which was a thing in the 90's that had the likes of Green Day, The Offspring, Blink 182, Sum 41, etc.
If you want some real punk, you have to go back to the 80's and check out groups like Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Bad Brains, Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Religion, and Minor Threat just to name a few.
In the 80's Punk evolved into hardcore, so Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Bad Religion were hardcore bands. If they want to know what is punk I think they have to listen to Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, The Adverts, Buzzcocks, all late 70's bands. That's the best way to identified punk, as Vin and Sori are clearly a beginners in alternative music.
Anyway, the bands that you mentioned are really cool.
Sum 41 is a 2000s band
Only Green Day album that was pop punk was Dookie
All the first few bands were from the 2000s
Green Day ARE from the 80s
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
@Vinand Sori heres the background of this song, i took from there wiki page :::
Background
"Boulevard
of Broken Dreams" was written during a respite from pre-production on
what would eventually become the band's seventh album, American Idiot. Hoping to clear his head and develop new ideas for songs, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong traveled to New York City alone for a few weeks, renting a small loft in the East Village of Manhattan.[3] He spent much of this time taking long walks and participating in jam sessions in the basement of Hi-Fi, a bar in Manhattan.[4] He began socializing with songwriters Ryan Adams and Jesse Malin.[5]
Armstrong wrote the song about his time in New York City, about "feeling alone" and trying to take power from that fact.[6]
Armstrong felt the song fit nicely with the album's storyline, which is
about "going away and getting the hell out, while at the same time
fighting their own inner demons."[5] The song's concept is from a Gottfried Helnwein painting of James Dean walking through New York with an overcoat on.[6] In the 2005 VH1 Storytellers
program featuring Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong stated that the title
of the song was "nicked" from the painting of James Dean walking alone.[7][8]
One thing to remember for the future if you do any more songs from this album(American Idiot) is it's a concept album telling a story.

Oh the nostalgia, Green Day was the first band that broke me away from my parents music. I was about 13 when Dookie came out, then ran to the local record store scouring the racks for Bootlegs. Any song from Dookie would be a good place to start since that album is amazing. Burnout, Longview, when I come around, Basketcase...or earlier stuff like Welcome to Paradise! I look forward to more Green Day :)
I listen to mostly metal, but I've seen Green Day live 4 times, and it's always amazing.
Green Day is not traditional punk like Misfits or Ramones but I still like them.
Gabriel Valles They’re traditional trash
@@LegendMathai I hear some crossover-country techno in their sound too.
If You liked Green Day give Sum 41 a try
ewwwwwwwww they sucked!
This video perfectly sums up why I don't think live performances should be used as first reactions to a song
Very cool reaction. I saw Green Day play at Gliman Street in Berkeley California back in the late 80s and early 90s, along with many other great bands of that generation. This song is beautiful and they're more like a modern rock band such as The Who for example now a days, but their earlier career they were very punk rock. Billie Joe Armstrong is a true talent and inspiration to me. Look forward to seeing more Green Day Reactions/Reviews.
Green Day is underground?
Green Day isn't Trve Kvlt Punk :p
I know, right? Out of the Punk Genre, they've probably achieved the most mainstream success.
George Daugherty well also The Offspring, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Rise Against, Sum 41, New Found Glory also reached A LOT of mainstream success
Yes, but I think Green Day reached the most mainstream success out of all of them.

It was made in to a highly successful Broadway musical. Seriously. I suppose it's what you do when you grow up; one can't be a punk forever.
this was a great live performance, you should see their studio version too, that has a great cadence to it with the beat
Alice in chains - Rain When I Die..
This is not really punk. Green Day also changed their sound over the years and moved away from punk. Try Longview or Basket Case for a more punk sound. Green Day are 90's punk which is different from 70's punk. If you want real punk try Sex Pistols Anarchy in the UK or Good Save The Queen.
Damned- New Rose. Maybe the start of fast punk/The Ramones?
There cool, I saw them live about two years ago and I still remember it
What's defining about Green day is how much their fans respond to them; this is one of their best songs! We love it!
