  • The Wacaco Pipamoka is a pretty good product for making filter type coffee. But it can also make other coffee drinks, notably a Cold Brew type drink.
I use my Pipamoka for the normal full filter type coffee brew, however i was curious how this product could make a drink that normally requires many hours of extraction in 1 to 2 hours.
Wacaco advise in the manual to use fine ground coffee for the cold brew, but i only had some ground coffee that i knew was a little too course, but this was an experiment and i was curious to see how this grind size would affect the extraction time (the coffee was about a medium/fine grind size, the same grind size that i normally use for the Nanopresso) and right away i noticed that i could hear that the water was flowing a little too fast through the coffee, this calmed down a little later, probably due to the coffee powder being wet and settling down in the basket.
I wanted to try for the 1 hour brew but i noticed that the water had all gone through the coffee at around the 50 minutes mark.
In conclusion, the coffee grind size is very important and it really does need to be a fine grind size for the best results for cold brew, unlike the Nanopresso, where you can get away with using coffee with a slightly courser grind size.
The inclusion of ice cubes does not make a big difference, the cold brew was just a little chilled because of this, however i must state that i live in Malaysia and its always hot here, so the ambient tempreture in my kitchen might have been a factor in this. I think that if you placed the cold brew in the fridge, or added a little more ice cubes at the and, this would really help with the tempreture.
The resulting taste from even my failed experiment was quite nice, obviously this will depend on the coffee used, but overall the cold brew was better than i expected for such a short extraction time.
