    BUT HOW DOES THE COFFEE TASTE? - Guys, apologies for not discussing the coffee itself, that was in the footage that had no audio, but I should have reshot it and added it to the outro. The coffee is a long black, full of flavour, clean, well balanced and with good body. The superfine micro filter blocks all sediment but lets a little more through than a paper filter on a V60 or Aeropress might. The most impressive thing to note is the consistency of brews. The prep of the basket is consistent (if you've got good scales and a grinder) The temperature is stable throughout the extraction, so it all comes down to the twist. Once you're familiar with that aspect, you can pretty much guarantee a reliably good result.

      GadgetViper Hey good news mine came in the mail today! I’ve used it for two times the first one I kind of screwed up my error second one used about the exact same amount of coffee I’m just using the scoop I didn’t weigh it makes a really good cup of coffee! The hardest thing to get used to was as you kind of mentioned the twist aspect it’s pretty easy after you do it once or twice thanks for doing your video and I like how it comes out better than doing a pour over actually! I still have my nano press and I’ll use that for making a Nespresso pod which I usually turn into an Americano anyway but I like this one I hope they sell many more of them it’s actually really easy to clean. I also bought all the nice extra accessories I got the two towels I got the silicone pad for brewing on as well as the case to keep it in but that’s just me. Cheers and thanks for your videos keep them coming!

      @@kinghazzah That's awesome, I'm glad you like the results and I'm a little jealous you have the accessories, I might have to grab those too. I've been using the Pipamoka pretty much exclusively over the last 2 weeks since making the video. I bought a different coffee, an Ethiopian and had a few niggles getting a balanced extraction. For some strange reason, even with my Baratza grinder, it was grinding poorly and the Pipamoka was stiffer on the twist. I switched back to my other coffees and it worked flawlessly again. I then tried adding slightly fewer grinds (just under 15g) and it corrected the issue. So, I think the important aspect to look for is not to overfill the basket, when you have a grind that takes up more volume. Squeezing the lid on the basket when the grinds are near the top seems to restrict the water flow. It's always the same with portable coffee makers, there's a learning curve, it's one of the reasons I love using them so much. By the way, while typing this, the door knocked and my new device arrived - The Aeropress Go :)

      GadgetViper I still want to get one into the hands of James Hoffmann for him to review to see what he thinks of the Pipamoka! I know he’s done one of the nanoPreso and I think the original one from Wacaco. I like the Wacaco mat (probably better for the nano when you’re filling it with coffee yourself and start using a pod) as the accessory and the towels, always good for cleanup. The case was just a convenient way of being able to store it somewhere and try to keep everything together. I’ve been pretty much for manual coffee making a French press guy, the best I’ve found for your outdoor adventures so far on that style is an Espro and they do make a portable metal version you might like. By the way their customer service was very understanding and couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t let me use their code but they refunded back 5% of the purchase price! You can’t ask for anything more than that right now the only place I’ve been able to find this product is directly from Wacaco themselves from Hong Kong. If you check your Twitter page you’ll see the photos that I posted. Happy coffee drinking!

      @@kinghazzah I'm a huge fan of James Hoffman's videos, I joined in on Jame's live coffee tasting a while back, it was great fun. I watched his Nanopresso video and I was a little disappointed, A product like the Nanopresso needs time to dial in, to really find that sweet spot and get the best out of it. I'm sure if he had more time and the Barista Kit he'd have liked it a lot more than he did.

    • @kinghazzah
      @kinghazzah 4 роки тому

      GadgetViper Quite possibly because I enjoy the barista kit and it does take a while to dial in if you’re trying to brew with your own ground coffee. If you’re using the Nespresso pods it’s actually fairly easy. I however like using the art form of somethings not necessarily the Percision that some people use but by dialing in by finding what works best for my taste through the old trial and error method! I agree I like the barrister kit it offers more options and of course a larger cup 😋! I’m just hoping that maybe Mr. Hoffmann will get one of these to review himself if he gets enough people requesting a review especially since it’s brand new I think you only get it direct from the manufacturer! I left notes on a few of his UA-cam reviews as well as on his Twitter page, maybe in the near future we will see a Pipamoka review! I’ve use the word Pipamoka often enough now and put it in as a spellcheck word that UA-cam now recognizes it as a word on my end at least🤣! Have fun making coffee, it’s about 7:00 AM here! Probably time to get up and use my Pipamoka!😉

    This is our second K-Classic. We had our first one for many years, so when we had to replace it, we wanted nothing else but this exact ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf model. We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.

    How would you compare it to the aeropress go.flavourwise?

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      If you've got it dialled in, it can make a VERY good coffee. I use paper filters on the Aeropress, the Pipamoka has an extremely fine mesh filter, it keeps the coffee clean, but does let some more body through compared to a paper filter. If I'm off for a walk to the park, the Aeropress is perfect, I can brew directly into the flask at home and keep it warm until I get to the top field. I do love the Aeropress, but, choose the Pipamoka over it for short trips outdoors. You're not really steeping the coffee like you do with an Aeropress, so it's more like a pour over with extra body. Hope that helps, have a great day :)

    I have a whole collection of reusable tumblers, and only two of them are not rated as spill-proof. Those are the only two that leak. The rest will not spill a single drop if the lid is closed. I have tried. I have dropped several of my tumblers on the ground, and aside from a couple surface scratches on them and a small dent in one of them, they are still clean and very much usable. The lids stayed on and closed. I find unscrewing the lid to be an inconvenient hassle, so I like drinking vessels that have a lid that opens quickly and easily. The brewing method looks interesting and possibly fun, but I probably won't consider this product unless they incorporate some sort of opening in the lid without having to take the whole thing off.

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  3 роки тому

      They have a new product, the Cuppamoka, I did a video of it recently, it has a spill proof lid that's really great to drink from, it also screws on to the pippamoka too. I really love a pour over coffee, so it's currently my favourite portable coffee maker. I was surprised by how many tumblers James Hoffman managed to get to leak, and you're right, having to unscrew the lid isn't ideal.

    • @gpturner0924
      @gpturner0924 3 роки тому

      @@GadgetViper I saw your review of the Cuppamoka. I already have a travel pour over cone that I love and use a ton when I'm on the move, so I really don't need or want the Cuppa... If they sold the Pippa with the drinking lid, that would be ideal. I would also consider it if Wacaco decided to sell the lid separately, so I could buy the Pippa set and the drinking lid. I know you're only reviewing the products and don't really associate with Wacaco, but I just figured I would share my point of view. It's an awesome idea, but poor execution on Wacaco's part.

    Thank you for another interesting video. I enjoyed your original Nanopresso video and ended up buying a Nanopress, barista kit and carrying bag soon thereafter. I have pulled some decent shots with it, but I have to admit I am left with some frustration about the product and it has never replaced my AeroPress as a go-to brewer on a daily basis.
    Though I received terrific support from Wacaco, Nanopress has never seemed to handle the change in pressure at over 1,000 feet above sea level in the mountains here in Japan and is finicky to get a full bodied shot with home roasted coffee and without a professional espresso grinder when removing the pressure plug.
    I love the detail in your presentation and watching the adventures of you and your dog. The Pipamoka has some intriguing parallels to the pressure system in Starbuck’s Clover, but I’m not inclined to get yet another gadget which has a lot of complicated plastic surfaces that will be difficult to clean.
    In the end, the simplicity of the AeroPress is what makes it so great- it’s easy to both maintain and clean. Five years in and other than replacing the rubber stopper, it has required zero maintenance. If I was to buy a new gadget, I’d probably grab the AeroPress Go over the Pipamoka.

      It's unfortunate my microphone came out at the end, I discussed the taste in that section -DOH! Anyways, It's very good taste wise, extremely consistent and there's good body (no paper filter like the Aeropress or a V60) absolutely no sediment gets through either. I've continued using it over my Aeropress and V60, it's quicker to brew than my V60 and I'm almost out of filters for the Aeropress so it's handy that the Pipamoka doesn't require them. Thanks for watching :)

      GadgetViper I’ve ordered a Pipamoka. My wife will not be happy so I’m blaming you. She wants my coffee cupboard returning to general kitchen duty. At least it is smaller than my last caffeine-chasing purchase, a Flair manual espresso maker. Actually, you should try and blag one of those to review. It’s technically portable (not a hiking solution, mind) and makes THE best coffee out of my many home-based methods.

      It sounds like either the grind was too fine or there was too much in the basket, or perhaps a bit of both. Try filling the basket so that it stops about 3-4mm from the top, so that the lid goes on without it crushing the grinds. If it still takes ages, then you'll need to go a little coarser with the grind setting. Hope that helps :)

    This looks really well made. Great review as always; the nanopresso is great, but a bit fiddly for use at work/out and about because of the need to have 100 degree water to pre-heat (and the mess). I take it this is a bit like a cafetière? What happens with a finer grind?

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому +4

      Hi Ian, I think this is way better than a cafetière, this pulls fresh water through the basket, and the mesh is super fine (250 microns) so there's absolutely no sediment in the cup. A cafetière has the coffee immersed in the water (a variable) and typically has a less clean extraction. Regarding the fine grind, I was extracting into a cup's worth of water with similar timing to the grind I use now. I had an over-extracted coffee. What I've learned since then is that it's all about the tension on the twist rather than the speed of the twist. I think if I went finer, I'd need to use less water and maintain the same tension on the twist (this would slow it down). I look forward to fiddling with it to some more - That's one of the reasons I like manual coffee makers like this one - the fun of tweaking the method :) Thanks for watching, have a great day!

      I believe I have read somewhere else saying the grind should be jus slightly finer then filter coffee or similar to filter coffee one. As this device is designed for smooth cup of coffee with similar brewing mechanism like aeropress but with a thermos which ensure the temperature are consistent through out and after the brew.
      But I can’t find the source where I found that info before I made my preorder.

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      @@dakdak6460 The grind setting I currently have seems to work really well, and yes, I'd say it's around the filter coffee or like you say, maybe a touch finer. I think there is potential to go finer still, but I think the extracted water volume would need to be less to compensate and prevent an over extraction. Maybe a 3/4 water level with a finer grind,/. Perhaps I'll do a part 2 video in the future, once I've experimented some more :)

      Firstly, thank you for your kind words on the Nanopresso videos, Secondly, I'm super jealous about you being 1000m up in the Japanese mountains, sounds like heaven! I just looked up the Starbuck's Clover and you're right, the vacuum extraction and an even temperature certainly do seem similar. You're totally right about the Aeropress and its simplicity, there's no other portable coffee maker on the planet that can match how easy it is to pop that coffee puck out and rinse it off. I will say that despite the appearance of complicated plastic surfaces, it really is only the basket that needs cleaning, all the other elements remain very clean. All the grinds are fully contained in the basket and the main vacuum element has clean water above the basket throughout the extraction. I'm also buying the Aeropress Go ;)

    Just received my device today and made my first cup of coffee out of the well designed brewer. I used a filter coffee grind that is on the coarser side. The filter basket is very fine so the cup of coffee is really as clear as what I can get from aeropress with my grind setting. Surprisingly It brews a very sweet cup of coffee compare to what I can get from aeropress , very balanced and flavourful too!
    However one thing to notice is the twisting motion is not easy for a petite woman with small hands and it took me over 1.5 minute to complete. But the coffee is very delicious. I guess a lighter roasted coffee will be perfect for this brewer!

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому +1

      So glad you liked the results! I think you're right about it working better with a lighter roast, I tried a dark roast the other day and it was harder to twist than my regular light to medium roast. For some reason a dark roast takes up more volume in the basket and that results in more resistance to draw the water through. I'm really enjoying the Pipamoka, even more than I thought I would, I hope you do too. Thanks for letting me know how you got on :)

    Basically it's a portable glorified steeper or French press that twists for coffee. No offense I rather just have a quick and dirty pour over.

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      Well, a french press is a full immersion brewer, the coffee and the water steep together, the Pipamoka pulls clean water through the basket, there's no immersion at all. The closest thing to the brew type would probably be an 'it's American press' - ua-cam.com/video/OeXayRtzXv4/v-deo.html but you're right, there is nothing wrong with a quick and dirty pour-over :P What I like about the Pipamoka is the temperature management, there's nothing else I know of that brews, extracts and it held all inside a thermally insulated container. Thanks for watching, have a cool day.

    • @GadgetViper

      Yes, the extraction is very consistent, there's good body and the subtle flavours are present, it's also very clean, no sediment passes through. I've currently got a few bags of really high quality beans, one of them is a very limited supply and I have been more than happy to use the Pipamoka rather than the V60 to brew them. Once your grind is right it basically takes care of the rest :)

      You can give it a wack and 99% of the grounds will come out. It's not quite as clean as the Nanopresso puck, becomes there's no tamping on the Pipamoka, so they aren't compacted. Also the is a very fine mesh filter at the bottom of the basket on the Pipamoka that does need a little brush to get clean. Have a great day :)

    Bought Pipamoka just after watch your video 8 month ago, broke the lids once after accidentally dropped it off the shelf (actually the damage does not affect function). Honestly they have a great after sales services, I just contact them from their website and follow the procedure, and they sent the spare replacement right away. What I can say about the new replacement lids, it's way more better than the original, have larger rubber on the side so it's close more tightly, or maybe the later version have larger rubber ring. After that, I've no doubt about wacaco after sales services, and still use Nanopresso and Pipamoca for daily coffee.

      I still use the alcohol stove, sometimes I use an MSR pocket rocket and a gas canister, really depends on the situation. If your mates into espresso or milk based drinks, then definitely go a Nanopresso with the double shot adapter. That said, the Aeropress can be used to make espresso like drinks, but you won't get no crema, it's still tasty though. If your friend likes an amazing tasting long black then you cannot go wrong with an Aeropress. :)

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      I prefer the results from the Pipamoka to a French press. The grind is not as course as a French press and yet the coffee is cleaner, absolutely no sediment in the cup. The filter is very fine, so the results are closer to a pour over, but with a little more body as there is no paper filter which tends to stop the oils reaching the cup. I've made about a dozen coffees with the Pipamoka since posting the video and everyone of them has been spot on. Thanks for watching.

    The Yeti Hotshot lid and the Rambler gives a truly drip/leak proof closure and the Rambler opening fits the Aeropress perfectly. The 12 oz keeps piping hot up to 6 hours. The 18 oz Rambler will go 12 if preped with boiling water for 5 minutes before filling. To me there are a lot of parts involved here. Just a lot of fuss for a cup o joe.

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      I guess if you are preparing the coffee from home and you have a high-quality flask like the Yeti, then the Pipamoka might seem a little much, The way I see it is it's like having an Aeropress (the inside components) and a thermal flask. I bought the cartridges I bought the barristers kit the little thermos that you can put on the bottom instead of a barrista kit and even got two of the barista towels because I like the towels for cleaning up so I’m pretty much set for the Preso right now. I love it but like you I enjoy doing coffee (and tea as gong fu style) in many different various ways! Each has its advantages each has its disadvantages and they all will do the job but depending upon how you make it does make a difference in how it tastes! Start with good ingredients and decent water those are the two main important things. I know I have an aero press or use pour overs I have almost the exact same grinder in a box as soon as I find it from moving that you have so at least when it comes to that it seems like we’re kindred spirits! Enjoy I can’t wait till mine shows up so I can see how well that makes it it is certainly a novel approach to doing coffee specially for you when you’re outdoors! I’m hoping that maybe they’ll give me back a little bit of a credit to my account because they’re not in on the weekends like many firms that we all know! Cheers

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому +2

      So sorry I didn't cover that in the outro, I waffled about the results in the footage that had no audio. I'd say, it's similar to a pour-over, but with more body. The mesh filter is very fine (250 microns) and it blocks all sediment, but it does allow a little more body than you'd expect from a Pour-over (with a paper filter). I've brewed side by side with my V60 and the Pipamoka. At the time the grind was the same and there was most definitely more flavour from the Pipamoka. That said, I've since discovered it tastes more balanced with a slightly coarser grind. So now, I'd say it's very close to a pour-over especially if you're using a pour-over with a paperless filter. I think the fact that the Pipamoka is not immersing the coffee in water, it's pulling clean water straight through the basket there's a real consistency (assuming the grind and weight is good).

    • @GadgetViper

    Well, yeah cleaning it is a hassle, but having a percolation and infusion brewer in one is great!

    As a bikepacker the Pipamoka is an incredibly versatile product. I use it with loose-leaf tea as well. I don’t drink teas that are tannin rammed so it doesn’t affect the taste of the coffee....well not to my blunt palate anyway! I fill the chamber with hot water and add the vacuum bits when I stop for coffee. It’s very forgiving of coffee grind size as well. The only slight drawback for someone with a touch of arthritis is the circumference of the whole thing. I find it a bit of an issue- I tend to hold the base with one hand when turning. When you are counting grams and space is tight this ticks so many boxes for c.425g. No filters to worry about and a nice dryish puck to easily knock out. Thanks for your honest and informative reviews!

    I am still trying to find the sweet spot for the Pipamoka, did you get any water left in the reservoir when you finished twisting or is all pulled through to the bottom?

    How to do order this product?

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      Hi Friend, The Pipamoka has only just come out, and I think Wacaco are just about managing to fulfil orders on their website (link in description) eventually it will probably be on Amazon and other online places, but for now you'd probably have to order directly from them. Have a great day, and thanks for watching :)

    I pre-ordered my Pipamoka when I first heard of it, just got email today that it has shipped. I am like you, I have the Nanopresso (with the Barista kit) and the Aero Press. I've been use both on a daily basis but since I got the Fellow Prismo both me and my officemate have been using the Aero Press every day. It makes the best cup of coffee ever! I'll be in Bristol this March so I will have to see if I can find "yum yum's".

      The Fellow Prismo does look very interesting, I've got the new Aeropress on order (the compact version) perhaps I'll grab a prismo too, Thanks for the tip

      Apologies, I did discuss the coffee towards the end when the audio was lost. It does make a well balanced coffee with good body. The extraction through the micro mesh filter is very clean, absolutely no sediment and most importantly it's super consistent. Hope that helps. Have a great day.

    Good to see u back reviewing after almost a year (I still hope you post on your Instagram also).
    Again, bought it after see your video. Not disappointed (bought it while promo for $39.9). It's really good product, and also surprised with the quality of the vacuum thermo cup. Before I bought it, at first I taught "nahh... It's only will keep it warm for 1 or 2 hours", but after the product come "Damn, this vacuum cup can keep my coffee warm for 4-5 hours (indoor)", also, no mess and easy to use. btw, for grinding, I use Hario Mini Mill with 7-8 click(depend on beans), it just perfect.

    I’m using a dark roast bean and can only fit 12g in the basket (I even tap the basket to sift as much downwards as possible). I’d say my grind is medium fine (0+6 on a LIDO 3), so I’m not sure how you’re getting 16g or even 15g in the basket for the pipamoka.
    For the Nanopresso barista I have the same problem. Same bean, I can only fit 13g in the 16g basket using a fine setting (before it’s too fine and clogs the nanopresso).
    Any insight? Thx

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      Hi, It's very true that different roasts seem to take up more or less space in the basket, I've also found this with the Nanopresso. I very rarely use a dark roast as I prefer a medium/light. I had some dark roast beans and I just tried putting 16g in the Pipamoka and it really was a tight fit. These beans were not that dark, so I can imagine a very dark roast would be a challenge. I squeezed the lid on and extracted it with the Pipamoka and it had a big effect on the tension during the twisting. I would definitely suggest using a lesser weight that will fit comfortably inside the basket. Perhaps you'll need to fill it slightly below the 1 cup line to get the ratio right. Here is a picture of the dark roast I used this morning - gadgetviper.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/pipamoka-grind.jpg - You can see at 15.8g with my grind setting it's right at the top of the basket. With my regular medium roast, it sits about 3mm lower. If you want to stick with your current roast, I'd suggest filling the basket say a couple of mm's short of the top and then adjust the water amount a little. Hope that helps, have a great day

    Hi mate. I was thinking for a very long time about purchasing Pipamoka. As an everyday coffee drinker and proud owner of Nanopresso, I was not in that much of a need to do so yet, but after watching your video I have no other choice, but get one for myself ;). I noticed your grinder and that is the last thing I need to make a perfect cup of coffee. I wanted to ask you, what will be your top tip for the grinder (brand and model)? Thanks and thumb up

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      If you're on a budget and want an amazing grind quality for a low price, I can highly recommend the Crushgrind Columbia, it's miles better than the Hario Slim. (That's assuming you want a portable manual grinder) If you're looking for an electric grinder for the home, I'd suggest nothing less than the Baratza Encore (I use a Virtuoso) Hope that helps :)

    Its so great to see you again. Thank you for your nice videos. I had bought a Barsetto according to your review. I'm still somehow satisfied with it. But I think that I could probably have been more satisfied with the Nanopresso. ;-) But anyway, thank you so much for your fantastic videos, I really missed you both.

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      Thanks friend, The Barsetto does a great job with a single shot, if the Nanopresso didn't have that double shot basket with the Barista Kit, it would be a tough decision to choose between them. The piston is great on the Barsetto and the double walled cup with the lid, that's a really cool feature too.

    Got mine and love the taste. Reduced the coffee to 8g and works well. Didn't expect it to squeak soooo much as it gets screwed. Also, the threads don't match up well so you need to pull and turn, quiet a work out!

      I tried it, and it didn't brew as well, I think there was trapped air in there, I think you could probably drop in a 1/3rd of water, then top it up to full, but I don't think it will work well without it sinking down through the water. Glad you liked the vid :)

    So basically it’s a AeroPress in reverse (vacuum instead of pressure), heavier and more difficult to use.

    Thanks for the video! Personally, the biggest draw back for me would be the lid. There are french press to-go coffee cups on the market now, which is kind of what this reminds me of but without the convenience of a sipable lid. It does seem like a sturdy, clean, easy to use product though.

    • @GadgetViper
      @GadgetViper  4 роки тому

      Hi Gail, I'll have to try a french press to-go cup, thanks. The Pipamoka is a different type of brewing method to a french press. It passes fresh water through the basket rather than the press, which immerses the coffee in the water. I think the results are a little more consistent and there's absolutely no sediment either. Thanks for watching :)

    I laugh that all these companies make such low capacity brewers. 8oz? Really? It’s a hassle to have to brew 2 times for each person.
