  • Episode 2 prt1 is shaping up to be another fun day fishing the new Okuma gear - I head up Muriwai to chase a few Trevs off the sand and hope for a few snaps in the evening. Over the next couple of episodes I will talk through the rigs I like to use and how I find my Muriwai spots by reading the beach.
With a great weather window and small swell forecast, it was a great opportunity to head to one of my favorite west coast beaches to flick around the new Okuma gear. I love it when Muriwai is under a mtr with offshore winds, it's pretty much perfect and gives you a good chance to get into a fish or two. The plan was to fish the low on a few of the banks casting into the channels that holds fish this time of year. Trev's normally turn up in good numbers and there's always a chance of a snap passing by. I've been fishing Muriwai most of my life and it's so awesome to still be able to drive this beach to this day and catch a feed off it's sand. I always try to head up around that half tide out, not only is it easier to drive it but it's always good to get there a bit early to get the smell of your bait in the area.
Crossing over the cut the beach greeted us with a small swell and 10knt offshores, as always it felt fishy. I made my way north in search of a nice bank I could flick a few baits from, I like to be at least 15k's up before I even think of stopping.
As we neared the end I started scouting, stopping every now and then I would climb a sand dune. Climbing a dune gives you great advantage, it helps you see holes, troughs, gutters and channels. You can see roughly a good K either side of you and 9 out of 10 times you'll see your perfect spot you want to fish. We came across a nice little bank with a little channel out in front, it wasn't a big bank nor channel but being half tide it was worth a crack. I normally give it 30mins to an hour then move on if nothing is biting. Setting up the Soul surf I decided this time to run an Ocean Assassin 7/0 mutsu flasher, this would give me a mixture of baits to use on the one rig and just set it in the holder to do it's thing. I'm finding these mutsu suicide flashers work a treat and allows me to concentrate fishing the other rod.
With the two rods out and tide still dropping I was hoping for an hour or two of Trev catching, I wasn't expecting to much in the way of snapper until later in the arvo. The closer you can line up the tides with those magic hours the better chance you have in hooking snapper. It's always great when the swell is down, not only can you wade out a bit deeper but you also get extra time on the low tide banks. It' didn't take long for bites to start, but they were only happening on the Soul surf. I was only running a 4oz breakaway on it, I like to fish lighter on the second rig so I can't cast as far. Most times fisho's put on heavy sinkers and cast to the horizon (both rods if you take two). I like to have one out as far as I can, the other in close, and running light gear makes sure I do that. Quite often I catch more fish in closer, and if your throwing the two as far as you can you could be casting over the fish.
Sure enough the Kotare sat still while I was getting all the bites on the Soul surf, striking on a bite I was hooked up to our first fish. It was our target species a nice little Trev around 35cm - the perfect specimen for our sashimi dinner tomorrow night. The Kotare had been in there for 20mins with no interest and the soul surf had already landed our first fish after 10mins. Dispatching him and on ice I was back out flicking the Soul surf, on my way back in I noticed the Kotare was at last getting bites and then it buckled over. I had to run back quick smart, putting the Soul in the holder I ran to the Kotare grabbed the spool and struck. Fish on fish on, it felt like another trev. A couple mins later I had my second Trev coming out of the white wash, it spat the hook at my feet but I was able to grab it. They do have very soft mouths and when fighting them in the surf they can actually rip a little and get free. It was another one for the bin, another one for sashimi tomorrow night. We had about an hour before low and had yet to hook a snap - I knew we probably wouldn't to the evening and it was fun on the Trev's anyway. it is fun catching another species other than just snapper. I managed a Kahawai and one more Trev before packing up and heading a little more north along the beach to set up for an evening snapper attack.
Make sure to check out this weeks episode and episode 3 prt2 next week where I carry on flicking baits off Muriwai in hope of a snapper or two and more talk around how I like to fish Muriwai....

Such a mint video bud... I'm just starting out and enjoy watching your videos for tips what are your favourite months of the year to fish... I fish Northland

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing

Cheers SM for the support - Northland your going to be a bit spoilt as it fishes good pretty much all year round but that early Autumn and early Spring is when those better fish turn up - off the sand those months from Sep - May fish really well - some places more that mid to late summer but as above that Aug /Sep is when ya want to be out there starting. I norm have a bit of a rest through the early summer as there's a lot more smaller fish about then back into it late summer.
Northland fishing on a nice warm winters day may surprise you though.
