  • This is the follow on from part 1 where I take my Sis Gen and her partner for a surfcast up Muriwai beach. It took awhile to find the right bank that would produce a few fish for us but it had been a great adventure in the end.
Glynn improved on his casting and we all had fun pulling a few fish from the surf.

I used 3 or 4 links of 30mm Chain for casting off the beach ... Lead Moves!! Chain sinks into the sand!! and stays still!! doesn't get snagged easily and costs crap loads less than lead ... for example nearly every parking area at a beach will have 2 posts with 50 odd Chain Sinkers just hanging there waiting to be cut up.

Hi mate what rig would you reccomend on Muriwai?

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing

Hi EwJ - it does come down to personal preference but I prefer to use a dropper. It's good to keep your bait up off the bottom due to the paddle crabs. I do also occasionally use a running rig but always start with the dropper and more times just stay with it, You can get the ones where you can place your hook/bait on a grove so it's more streamline to.

@ REEL KIWI FISHING ... did you know that the shark you let go today doubles is size and within 3 years you're crowing ..
That's the 5th good fish today the sharks got ... only it wasn't The Sharks it was your Pet Shark you let go today.
Here's what I used to do when long-lining in the Manakau ... Sharks up to 3 foot long got turned on their backs and the lower jaw was cut off hoping to get the hook back. Sharks over 3 foot long I cut down from the arse to the top of the spine then flipped them over and took all the meat above the spine to the back of the head and I smoked it for dog food.
Back in my day we got rid of "the Slimy's" like Rays and Sharks and eels so the next generation could enjoy fishing.
It appears the next generation doesn't give a shit and passes it off as being Green or Nice ?

My role for the day in part 1 and 2 was to help Glynn with his surfcasting - this was his first time fishing Muriwai and also fishing in surf. After losing 3-4 fish due to the slackening of the line on his down stroke and dragging the fish instead of walking towards them etc, I was there to coach and remind him which he thanked me for over the day so sorry if this wasn't calm enough for you,
