    I first thought that the green, tan or black handle would be best, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that all of those colors would "hide" in the undergrowth if I misplaced it or set it down and forgot about it. I ordered the survival orange-handled version with the tan blade. Can't wait for it to arrive.

    the Carabiner hole is so that rescue climbers don’t drop the knife on the victim that they’re trying to save, rather than cut. They don’t like when you drop knives on the patients while trying to save them usually. That’s one big lanyard hole.

    I didn't mind so much that the handles scales on my esee 5 were flat but the edges were square and blocky feeling so I rounded the edges with a belt sander. They probably still don't feel as nice as the new handles but it helped in my opinion.

    Those knives are nice, but I was looking for a survival knife and chose other brands and have the Ka-Bar, Schrade, and Gerber brands as a primary, and backup knife. I like the Gerber folding knives as a backup and the others as primary tools. The Esee brand knives are probably nice, but as I have more knives than I will ever need they are all I want now. The Esee 6 would be the only knife I would consider buying if I was without one and looking for a survival knife.

    Speaking as an avid climber, there's really no reason you would need a knife except if you're on some big wall expedition. In which case, you're likely hauling a 200+ pound bag containing all of your gear, portaledge, food, water, etc and storing a knife would be just like storing anything else you might have with you. It just doesn't seem necessary whatsoever to have a knife readily accessible on your person at all when climbing.

      Except for the scales. I replaced the slippery plastic crap scales for my BK’s with micarta then realized I just paid the same price as an ESEE. Yeah, I think the price difference is in the scales, mass produced plastic scales are a heck of a lot cheaper than micarta.

    • @gorillahd9247
      @gorillahd9247 4 роки тому

      @@evictioncarpentry2628 Personal preference. I know that a light coating of oil will take care of the blade and if I am only cutting cord, processing wood, etc... then 1095 is all well and good. Tough steel, holds an edge, not brittle - I get all of that. I don't want an oil covered blade doing my food prep though. It also depends on where your blade is stored and what the environmental conditions of your area are. If I was blessed with living in the desert southwest then rust is mostly someone else's problem. I live in a high humidity, and rainy location. Thus - rust. Especially with the knife externally mounted on my pack. You made your choice and that is cool. I just have a different preference.

    • @Ephem13
      @Ephem13 4 роки тому +2

      @@gorillahd9247 You can put a patina on carbon steel and it won't rust, cooking oils will also protect it. ESEE knives were developed and used in the rain forrest, I doubt you get more rain and humidity than a rain forest. Every hard use pocket knife in S30 or S35 that has crossed my sharpening bench has tons of little micro chips in the blade, this will only be exaggerated in a well used bush craft knife. Stainless bush craft knives never do the job as well, the trade offs are just too steep.
      If you want a stainless bush craft knife then get one, it's your money and your gear. Just stop acting like there is a reason or real need for them.

Just about everyone speculates about it, but I've yet to see something official/factual about their reasoning. Modern stainless steels have great performance, and huge advantages in terms of rust.
