I do believe the term “The New Onecler” has died out in favor of “Tumblr Sexyman.”
I think this is better because I think that can encompase a larger spectrum of characters, not only villains nor anti-heroes.
@@Dracobyte idk what you're talking about, Tumblr Sexymen are all tall, skinny young white dudes with big smiles who are morally ambiguous and preferably have a mysterious backstory. Even if they don't actually look like that that's how fanart of them looks like. The only popular exeption is Sans who is ironically one of the most famous examples of a Tumblr Sexyman.

I just feel relief that the Loki show did not come out in 2012. Can you imagine if a show about one of Tumblr's originally Tragically Misunderstood Ravenhaired Sexy Men came out in which there was not only dozens of canonical alternate universe counterparts of the same character in series, but at least one canon selfcest ship?

As a fander I can only think of Virgil when I read/heard that.
as a former Undertale fan, i would definitely say that Sans reached the same level as the Onceler. There were soo many AUs made where Sans was one of, if not the main character and there were even AUs made where Sans was the only character (Think Ink Sans or something). People shipped the Sanses with each other and made entire series that were pretty much only occupied by Sans.
Some of them (Fell, Killer, Nightmare, etc.) are also uncharacteristically edgy and generally evil, which was quite strange for a character who really only gets mean when the player themselves becomes a villain. Much like the Once-lings, it feels like a similar warping of source material around the raw gravity of fandom desires.
i've seen so much of it and there not only Sans versions but Pyparus too and it all mixed up so much. so honestly this undertale thing scares me even more

They literally follow artists around, stalk, harass, take videos/pictures of them without consent, snoop into their personal business, attack those they believe to be dating the artist, circulate scandals/drama on purpose, doxx fans who try to stop them. It’s wild. Granted most of these fans are Koreans who live there, although there are a few foreign ones. A lot of being a k-pop fan is rallying together with other fans to prevent sasaengs from doing the worst things possible. 🥲

Yeah. That's why they're called fanatics. It's a direct comparison to crazy religious people, because somebody in show business a hundred years ago or a bit more saw where this was going. All hardcore fans are a little nuts, but the more insular and specific a fandom is, the less it tolerates outside scrutiny. And once they get a set of behavioral rules and approved views, they're basically a cult. If you're young enough and/or have nobody else you feel like gives a damn about you, then you get can get trapped when you would rather leave, like a cult.
Your average Dishwasher Aren’t all fandoms cults.
I myself would consider to be a part of many fandoms, but a lot of them, especially ones like Rick and Morty and K-pop go to very extreme lengths to defend and protect their insane shit

There is absolutely zero drama within the ygo fandom (outside of the people who play the TCG competitively), ship whoever you want. We have a ship name even for ships with 6-7 characters in them (tfw it's kind of 3 people but hey they have "darker selves" so now it's 6).

I firmly believe Sans is the closest thing to being "the new Onceler"
I used to be DEEP into the Undertale AU fandom and it was 30% dedicated to actually making aus with intricate storylines and comics/fic, and the remaining 70% is just people shipping Sans with himself. The isle of Oncelers concept reminded me of this one Wattpad fic where Toriel made a school for all AU characters and it becomes a drama where the Bad Sanses try to tear everyone down and there're a LOT of questionable story beats and endings. Also let me just mention how it's very, very common to make fankids for Sanscest ships and then make them fall in love with each other like.
I was so young I didn't understand what was happening and just took each Sans as being a different person but now that I look back on it I'm filled with both nostalgia and cringe

I've never once in my life heard of onceler (already almost out of college in 2012), but as an early-day fangirl who's had her share of role playing AUs, Tumblr and live journals half a decade before all of this, I can absolutely understand the almost logical progression to the whole thing. This is exactly how fandom sometimes works and it is super fun to see.

Yeah the only character that got even close to the Onceler Phenomenon was Sans. He also got tons of AU versions of himself (Error!Sans, Blueberry, Underfell Sans, and Fresh to name a few), but the difference was that Sans came from a piece of media where /every/ character was unique and likable. So these AU Sans characters were accompanied by just about every other Undertale character with the same aesthetic.
But that still didn't stop people from shipping their different Sanses together.
God I want to forget
The Undertale fandom at it's peak was both a cursed and a blessed time. I really enjoyed reading the AU comics that were coming out about the characters. I did NOT enjoy the shipping fiasco.
All the characters in Undertale are great, but since sans fit the tumblr sexyman archetype so well, pretty much all of the attention the AUs got was directed towards sans (and I guess Papyrus too, by association). Other great characters like Undyne or Asgore usually got a new design or something but ultimately missed out on most of the attention. I’ll never regret being super into Undertale around it’s popularity peak, but man, do I ever know some stuff that I don’t need to.
Been there and done that, still follow the creator of error, fresh and i forgot but I think glitch sans...
Last I checked, this never ended and is still going on. And although I don't care for the shipping, I actually really like the different AUs.

Sure, I enjoy shows about alternate counterparts of the main character who has a sibling-like dynamic.
But the fans take it way too far by wanting to ship them together even if they have a purely platonic relationship in canon. And the worst of their behavior is when they bash certain female characters and would accuse any fans who don't support their sick-minded shippings of being "homophobic".

I have a story, but not just any story, a story of shame. It was nearly the end of summer break when my cousin and I discovered this app called “Rabbit”. In this app you could invite other people with accounts to watch movies and videos together on the web such as, UA-cam, Tubi, Netflix, etc. Continuing the story, I invited him to a session and we decided to watch a movie or two before we moved onto UA-cam, (this is where the story gets shitty) and I had an amazing opportunity to play a joke on my cousin with the ability to search up anything in the search bar. And I absolutely wasted it. I decided to bring back the shittiest memories of MY LIFE. I searched up “Gravity Falls fanfic”. what came before us was a terrifying sight, (honestly I would have preferred dying over this) we saw siblings preforming sexual acts of incest, underage sex, and worst of all, a young boy making out with a sexualized yellow Dorito. The rest of the night continued with us making the same types of pranks on eachother and I also can’t get ANY of the images I saw that night out of my mind. Which is why I regret searching up those three fucking words that I will hate forever “Gravity Falls fanfic”. (also stop shipping the twins that is some mental shit you sick fucks)

2:38 I truly love that for every other example given here, you said "[character name] *from* [piece of media]", but very naturally said Sans Undertale in the middle of all that. Sans Undertale was just the funny thing to call sans for so long, and in spite of the same format being applied to plenty of other characters outside of undertale, somehow he's the only one it stuck with. so many people will forever have the title Sans Undertale etched into their brains, as though it'd been his real name all along.
Sans Undertale already sounds like a a name and username for so much time we get used to it
