  • In this Review of the Canon 5DS R I will give you my experience and opinion of one of the biggest full frame cameras of the last years, resolution wise. What it can and what it can't do as well as why I bought it and how it performs against the other cameras I have and have used like the Canon 6D II, Canon Eos R and RP, Sony a7iii and Fuji XT3.
All images are jpg images straight from the camera taken with the Canon 5DS R and the Canon EF 24mm f1.4 L II, the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM and the Canon EF 85mm 1.2 L II. For the long time exposure images I used an ND1000 filter I got from amazon for around 30 Euros.
Here you can get my presets I used to edit these images:

I made the right choice after watching your review on 5DsR. Had a hard time choosing between 5DMkIV or EOS R before. But then i think to myself, why should I buy a camera that I don't use all of the features? I don't do vlog, don't do videos, don't do sports photography. All I need is a camera with great resolution and details to print large. And I ended up buying 5DsR. I really satisfied with the image quality which came out from it. But there's one thing I have to be aware of is the battery life. I didn't get 700 shots as advertised. And what I learn now is, buy a camera that you need, not what you want.
    Thanks, Dirksón! Happy shooting.

just add a battery grip and you would have longer shooting time.

Do you have any specs that you would recommend having for a computer in order to edit the photos from the EOS 5DsR?

Buy a battery grip and an extra battery and you'll increase the number of shots. I purchased a brand new Vivitar battery grip for $30.00 on eBay for those occasions I need the grip such as being outdoors in cold weather when you need the extra battery.

I have watched so many comparison and product reviews between the 5D MkIV and the 5DS R but this is the best one. A real world review from a professional photographer who spends most of his time behind the camera he’s using. Your edits are inspiring because of their simplicity, you execute the basics quickly and don’t spend half an hour getting an image perfect - which I LOVE. Other reviewers spend all of their time slamming the 5DS R for having poor low light/ISO capabilities, low dynamic range and a poor burst rates. On paper this seems true, but you managed to highlight that none of this actually matters in the real world. When would you ever actually use an ISO of 12,000 for quality work you’d be proud to print? You were still able to shoot that fairground scene at ISO 50 because tripods exist, which reviewers always forget to mention. If the lighting is less than ideal then you supplement it with a soft light.
Unfortunately, I followed the advice of many reviewers over a year ago and bought a secondhand 5D MkIV. Whilst the DR is the best Canon has to offer, I’ve never pushed the ISO above 5000 because the images are just too noisy to use for quality work - yet this camera’s ISO can stretch beyond 50k. Frankly at that point, I’d use the 12MP camera on my 4 year old iPhone SE.
I’m seriously thinking of trading the 5D MkIV in for a 5DSR. I never use video, Dual Pixel Raw is a gimmick and I’m planning on a Safari trip in the future. I only take still pictures of wildlife, nature or landscape. If I want more DR I can bracket shots and build panoramas went I went crazy levels of detail. My 2018 iPad Pro has plenty of horsepower and storage for those file sizes.

Thank you for your opinion and experience. The 5DS R is still great camera, I just spend two weeks with it in Spain (again) and will go again in a week with the Hasselblad H3D. If you want high quality files the 5DSR is phenomenal, especially when shooting in sunny places like Spain or on the Safari trip :) The 50 MP will give you power to print large or to crop in if you capture a bird or elephant in the distance. I bought it on Ebay for 1050 Euros with around 250.000 shots, which is still very usable as most of my other cameras are beyond 500.000 shots and they still work fine (6D and 6D II)

That's right!! I think when you are serious about photography, our decisions come from that we need to do with the camera, and our passion, not from the market trends. I just bougth this camera for macrophotography because I need big prints too, and this is the best option for me. Many other may think I crazy, but is ok for me.

This is a great review and the way real people use their cameras. I could no longer resist the low price of US $1299 at B&H and purchased a new Canon 5Ds last month and it is an amazing camera, it is everything and does everything you mention in your video. The 5Ds and my 6D will be my kit for many years. I also use a 70D for video and that will someday be upgraded to a R6 or a APS-C version of the R6.

Really beautiful video........ Totally inspirational...... this is the main reason I could never switch to sony cameras. There was something about them that made it computational and not art. I always love canon....and I believe photography is more about Art and not about autofocus algorithms and A.I. Thank you for showing the joy of shooting photography.....

Hi, it was great statement. I am in this challenge for almost two weeks searching, studying, consulting and practicing to chose between GFX50s, Sony aRiii/iv, and 5DSR! No doubt for the best depth of colours and dynamic range in GFX; No doubt for the amazing features, whatever you need on a7Riii and specially on iv; but despite of all of those technical features, the image quality by 5DSR is something else! I just took some portraits in rush with 24-7-f2.8 front of my office in natural light without any filtering or even single editing, the result straight away from camera were stunning! However, my brain recommending me to go for GFX50s or better than that with tunes of features go for Sony a7Riv BUT my eyes, my artistic feeling is pushing me to 5DSR with ignoring all new technical aspects i mentioned. Therefore, I believe the old-5DSR is for Fine Art Photography (maybe is not for sport or motion fashion or Street photography) but definitely is the best for Studio, Still life, Food and Product, Landscape, and Still Portraiture photography for sure! Thank you.

Great film from the heart and wallet, too many people focus on the maths of photography. So shoot national magazine DPS or Prints 30ft x 20ft and they have all been done from 2006 Canon 5D, 1DsMKIII, 5DIII, 5DIV, EOS R but my choice is 5DsR, if you get it right then its amazing. Take a look at ON ONE software for enlarging and Shriraz RIP software for printing 10inch to 60ft. Love the fel of you style as its nice and warm. LOVE IT !

The Camera Body is nearly identical to the 5diii so the experience will be very similar. I find the results to be excellent and it gives you the chance to print really big. If you print small you might see the images still being sharper than the 5diii but the 5diii is a great camera by itself if super large prints is not what you want to get into, so you could stay with your 5diii.

I just ordered one (brand new and authorized, not gray import) for US$1500 from B&H to replace my 7 year old 6D.I take mostly landscape and do print big from time to time. Heh I still use center point and recompose its a habit from decades of photography from my days of pentax k1000 and Rolliflex medium body TLR back in the days. I played around with the fancy autofocus stuff on 1dx but went back to centerpoint again.
Be careful of going over f8 especially past 11, you will get diffraction effects. Better to use an ND filter.

Do you use the highlight control (D+) on the 5dsr. Also what are your thoughts on shutter speed with the large sensor? Did you adjust it at all? Do you use "safe" shutter speeds based on your lens? Just curious, I have a 5dsr and love it. Works well with all my 5d/6d type cameras.

    •  3 роки тому

I don't use highlight control, I am usually very basic with any camera I have. All in manual and the focus point always in the missile, White Balance to 8000 Kelvin and that's kind of it :) I got the lens with around 250.000 to 270.00 shots shutter speed and now it might have around 350.000 to 400.000 which is still maybe half of what it is capable of, so many years to come to enjoy this camera. I use it very guerrilla style like all my cameras, no difference there because of the bigger Megapixel. It works all just fine.

    •  4 роки тому +3

I am a big fan of the 50mm lens on a full frame camera. Any 50mm lens with AF will give you great results on any full frame camera, no matter if canon, nikon or Sony. The 50 is great on the cheap 5d, 5d II or 6d. All cheap cameras. I am not a big fan of the apsc cameras like 800d or 80d. But in general here you can also get great results but you are closer to the subject.

    •  4 роки тому +1

Heard the same but it has not come up yet. It is a great camera and I would probably go for the 5DS R. You can find them relatively cheap on eBay. New in Germany they go for 2700 Euros, I paid 1050 Euro. Between this camera and Sony A7R II which is 42 mega pixel, and similar price, at least in USA, which one would you rather choose? Thanks

    •  Рік тому +1

The 5 DSR is still an excellent camera, a classic for his mega pixel cameras, I still recommend it. I don't know about battery life and AF with the a7Rii, the a7R is now at its with iteration, if you can get the a7RIII maybe that's the way to go, otherwise I might go with the 5DSR. If you go with the Sony you can use any Canon EF lens with the Sigma MC11 adapter, it's amazing if you have many EF lenses and a Sony body.

You mean real estate photography? I don't think you need these megapixel files unless the images need to be printed very largely. I also do real estate photography since 2014 and I've used the 550d and 10-18mm stm lens until this year and now use that lens on the rp. Plus a 6d I or ii with a 24mm f1.4 and 50mm lens. Mostly the images are used for web use and are printed in the real estate store in relatively small size (Din A4). Si any camera will do fine here I believe.

Do you like the JPEG from your 5DSR more or your 6D mkii ?

    •  3 роки тому

Actually yes. I like mostly all of Canon Full Frame jpgs, with the old 5D from around 2005 being the best jpg camera in terms of how the images look in jpg files. The 5DS R is a great joy to use. I also have two 6DIIs, the Eos RP and the Hasselblad H3D, the 5DS R is an excellent camera to this day. It does not have face detection and it does not take RF lenses and it doesn't hold up in video with AF and 4K, but if you can live without these features this one is a great cheap alternative to the R5, which you will also find a review of on this channel.

The 5dsr is the 5dsr if you live on the west or on the east. There is just one 5dsr.

25:17 that deceptively looks like a Perrelet, but I cant find any of their chronographs in tonneau shape. Their double rotor movement is dope tho. Sure doesn't look like any Franck Muller I've seen..
Man, won't be able to sleep now..

It's a Cerruti I bought in 2005 - did cost me 100 Euros/Dollars. You may find one on Ebay for less than that. may be called Classico or Classico grande.

The 5D series has always been a pro camera, you will find many known photographers from all genres using the 5D I II III IV and SR. So you heard wrong, it is exactly the opposite of a beginner's camera. Although it is easy to use, so don't shy away if you are a beginner :)

You have a very lovely little boy, and a lovely girl friend. Is she the mother ?, if so, she has born, a lovely child. You are blessed! One thing though, some of your images, seem to be "Double exposed".

    •  3 роки тому

Thank you Geoff for your kind words. I don't understand Double exposed, maybe you can tell me what that means. All images are single images, no double exposures if you meant that.

@ Hi again. It's just that there seems to be another image over the main one. But, as you say they are single exposures, that cant be the case.

“I think my photographs deserve to be seen”
That’s not really your decision to make.

Beautiful children, great photos, pretty women. Now, assuming your girl friend is the mother of your son, why not marry her and give your son the life-long, until death commitment that every child deserves from his parents. And even better, do it before God in a church. To me children deserve the utmost serious commitment of their parents, and nothing says that like getting married and in a church. Any two fools can make children, but life-long, serious commitment should be the norm for such a beautiful blessing as that child, and marriage itself is a most excellent thing. I know it is off topic, but as a father and husband I cannot help but recommend marriage, it's a most excellent thing for all of us. Best wishes! ( You are fortunate to have such a handsome son and such a pretty woman in you life. All the best!)

Thank you very much! We are kind of married but without any ring or wedding. Being together every day is where the commitment lies. So maybe one day we will get married, but I see a wedding more like a one day party that doesn't really change anything.
