  • Keith Cooper looks at some aspects of the Canon EOS R5 45MP mirrorless camera.
    After trying one for a while he talks about some of his impressions, from the point of view of an architectural and industrial photographer, comparing aspects of the camera to his 50MP Canon 5Ds.
    There are more technical details and photos in his written article about the R5 on the Northlight Images web site at: www.northlight-...

    Thank you for your time making this video, very nice and surprisingly pleasant to watch until the end. I myself just bought a 5DS to replace my old 5D2, and from this review, apparently I did make a really good choice to go with 5DS, with the current pricing of brand new 5DS heavily discounted at this moment, less than half of 5D4 that I originally want to get, that means, like a bit over a quarter compared to R5.

    • @KeithCooper

      Yes, if my 5Ds fell off a building, I still think I'd replace it at the moment, given the huge price difference.

    Hello from Prague.
    Great review. I am 5 years with 5DSR, mainly for real estate, architecture, and 360 street view tours. And love it. Last month looking at mirrrorless and R5, but even your video doesnt make that decision to go for newer system. I dont care about AI focus or some new function, most of my shooting is from tripod, just a few weddings or reports. So i think that will stay with 5DSR for next few years. Price for R5 is crazy (almost 4000 Euro), even R6 mark II is probably good, i lack there top LCD status and lesser resolution. Wish you good times to UK.

      Thanks - I still have the 5Ds for some work. I decided to get a GFX100S for some other stuff, but in many respects [tethering for example] the 5DsS works a treat.
      BTW, this is one of my first ever YT videos made after someone at Canon persuaded me to do them - as ever the written article has much more detail ;-)

    Thank you for such level-headed and sensible review based on your needs - there are so few of those. As it happens, I just shot an interior with both R5 and 5DsR. I had the TS-E17 on the R5 (with EF-EOS R drop-in CPL filter) and TS-E24 on the 5DsR. It sure is nice to be able to use polarizing filter that is not ridiculously sized on the TS-E17. My issue has more to do with post processing of files. Lightroom does not offer camera profiles for R5 (Adobe has not offered them for Canon cameras starting with RP) , I had to use X-Rite Color Checker Passport. Picture style was set to neutral on both cameras at shooting and when I imported the images, I used camera neutral profile for 5DsR and custom profile created with Color Checker for R5. In retrospect, I should have created custom profile for each camera under the same condition so an apple to apple comparison could be made. I found 5DsR images to be more neutral in tone and easier to process, perhaps because the camera has been with me for over 4 years. R5 files had more contrast and saturation and I had to tone it down first to be on the similar starting point as files from 5DsR. Anyway, not having to switch the two tilt-shift workhorses on 5DsR or to sacrifice significant resolution by mounting one of the lenses on backup camera (5DMK III, replaced by EOS R) was a welcome change. One of the images, an impromptu shot of the park below from the roof terrace using R5 and TS-E17 just blew me away - it was like when I upgraded to 5DMk II from a Rebel. I am enjoying the 5DsR - R5 tandem and I can see using this setup for quite some time (or sell another kidney). Thank you again for informative review based on real application.

      Thanks - what I didn't go into was processing, since the only software I'd got to process R5 raw files was Canon's DPP. For most images in the written part of the review, I used DNG converter and opened in ACR/PS CS6, which is my day to day photo software (I deeply dislike LR, but that's another story ;-) ) If I had paid for an R5 I might have a more up to date version of PS, but that can wait for a R5s...

      Thanks for the response. One thing I do like about mirrorless that I forgot to mention is not having to worry about light leak from the viewfinder. I wish Canon had provided eyepiece shutter in their 5-series DSLRs as well, not just on their 1-series (my old Nikon film camera had one). One time when shooting with 5DsR, I forgot to stand in between the sun behind me and the camera during long exposure. Light had infiltrated inside the camera from viewfinder and ruined the image. I began to carry a black cloth with ND filters so that I could wipe clean the filters as well as drape it over the viewfinder.

    Good review. It's funny I was thinking the same in regards to how I'd like to use the EVF full time and display screen for just playback & review, and keep it off the rest of the time. That sounds like something that can be very easily added in firmware to have the INFO button cycle through an off mode, the eye sensor would then turn on when it picks up your eye/face as usual.

    As someone who shoots mainly land/seascapes and architecture I can't justify spending a wad of cash on the R5 when my tried and trusted 5DS serves me perfectly well. There's more chance of me getting a 5DSr to be honest, which is what I originally wanted but none seemed to be available when I was buying.

    To save battery life switch the viewfinder to 60hz refresh, and enable the power saving options.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 роки тому

      Thanks for pointing that out as an option - the refresh rate is something I'd need to look at, although some power saving options reduced the 'readiness' of the camera - this definitely falls into the category of needing longer to test to see what feels OK and what doesn't. I know from other cameras that it sometimes takes many weeks of use to find what works best - and that can change over time too.

    It surprises me that you didn't mention the better dynamic range of the R5, because that is for me one of the weak points of the 5Ds. I just ordered the R5 and hope I can prevent the need for HDR here and there with this camera. (talking about interior photography)

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 роки тому

      No surprise? - the difference was minimal in the relatively limited testing I was able to do. There are going to be areas that don't really show until you've used a camera for a month or two - I don't generally find dynamic range an issue with the 5Ds. Files can certainly be opened up more, which is an advantage of the R5, but not enough of a difference to make me spend money I can ill afford.
      Give me both and I'll pick the R5 almost every time ;-)
      If you push files hard enough that this makes a difference then it may be worthwhile to update
      Remember too that the review has caveats due to the types of work I do and limited testing time ;-) Also it's just a video - I tend to produce them to supplement my 'real' written articles/reviews which can be far more nuanced and technical in coverage.

    Keith. I am a stills landscape focused shooter who do not care much about video features and eye detector focus. I would imagine that would be the case too with architectural photography. I bought a 5dsr in 2020 and I like it. I use tilt shift lenses which I mastered from you articles. I am surprised though in your comparison you did not mention the wonderful manual focusing guide/indicator on canon mirrorless camera. To me it make manual focus work like auto focus and is very addictive, especially when used with the tilt function to get both foreground and background in focus. The focussing system makes it easy to fine tune and check by just tapping on the screen between foreground and background. This often makes me reach for the Eos R when using canon tse lenses. Nonetheless, thanks for the comparison.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks I've not done this. I thought it's what I meant by 'focus peaking' - I need to check again.
      I've covered it in more detail in the written review (these get the more detailed stuff than the videos ;-) ) The videos are more of an overview at he moment (I've only been doing them for a month or so)

      It's a great feature that I haven't seen on other systems. I also enjoy the ability to adjust the screen-very often I find my camera quite low on a tripod and being able to angle the screen upwards is really nice. I hope they keep using this design for the inevitable 'R5s'.

    I love the review. I bought my 5ds this year as an upgrade to my 5d mkii. I discovered it’s harder to get sharp pictures out of hand with my 5ds in similar conditions compared to the 5d mkii. I guess due to the higher pixel count at same sensor space. So i bet this is improved on the R5 isn’t it?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 роки тому

      Yes, the sensor IS is very good - although I didn't have the camera for long enough to do a proper test, I was able to see much more consistent hand-held shots. I'm very much looking forward to a higher MP version of the R5 for my work (where I do use a tripod a lot) ... assuming we start getting work again at some point ;-)

      Keith Cooper actually there is solution for that need of yours, you just needed more time with the camera to figure it out.

    Fabulous video. Thank you. I’ve also been a 5Ds user almost since the day it became available. I simply love it-and I know its capabilities as well as its shortcomings. That’s why I’m struggling to decide do I move “up” to the R5, or go with another 5Ds. Shooting handheld in low-light has always been a challenge with the 5Ds-and if doing so will be more manageable with the R5, that’s virtually a major advantage for me. Using the adapter with my vast collection of EF lenses is also a concern. Is there any loss in image quality whatsoever? I’m simply not ready to throw away my L-series collection yet. Thanks!

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks - there are no problems with using EF lenses that I've found, I tested all mine, but of course my main 'work' use is with tilt/shift lenses, so not exactly straining AF performance.
      One benefit of the R5 would be that it's even easier to use my Mamiya lenses with a T/S adapter ;-)
      Of course, the R5 has a lot of nice features - just not enough yet for me to ditch the 5Ds...
      Our lack of work over the last year makes the choice to keep using the 5Ds an easy one. It looks as if a true 5Ds mirrorless replacement won't be along until next year, and maybe some new tilt/shift lenses to go with it

    It's July 2024, and I've just viewed this video, which makes me curious to know whether you're still shooting the 5 Ds? Another question came to mind when you said you were shooting the 5 Ds for several years which is, why did you select the 5 Ds and not the 5 Dsr? I personally am shooting the EOS R (30.2 MP) body and have previously shot the 5 Dsr. However, now that I've become more serious about my architecture photography, I'm very seriously considering going back to the 5 Dsr, although I'm also considering the 5 Ds, which is part of my curiosity about why you selected to use a 5 Ds.

      Last year I moved to the GFX100S, giving me ~60MP and better pics from the crop mode. I've adapters for my TS-E24/17/90 all of which work in varying degrees with the full 33x44 medium format 100MP. Indeed I've just [yesterday] bought a TS-E50mm [video tomorrow] for both crop and non-crop use [AVR photography for the 35mm crop] Gives me ~40mm equiv on the GFX and goes well with the Fujifilm 30mm TS [~24mm equiv]
      I still use the 5Ds for some macro and close-up work - it just works.
      The 5DS R - a masterpiece of Canon marketing... ;-)

    Keith, I am watching this video for the 1st time after a year you produced it. Does your opinions on the 2 cameras still hold true? I am an avid hobbyist and made the switch from the 5DS (I used since it was introduced) to the R5 about 3 months ago. I am truly glad I made the transition. It takes a bit of time to get from a DSLR way of thinking to a mirrorless mindset, but considering all the features of the R5 I've learned along the way, I am very impressed with the camera. The dynamic range is outstanding, I like the touchscreen on the rear display to move my focus point if needed, and the RF glass is fantastic. I was going to keep the 5DS as a backup (or just nostalgia) but I decided to sell it along with one of the EF lens I rarely used to purchase a RF 50 mm F1.2 L prime. The quality of the images with it on the R5 are just phenominal in terms of sharpness. Making the change really re-charged my enthusiasm for photography.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  2 роки тому +1

      For my own use, yes.
      The R5 simply doesn't offer [enough] advantages for the sorts of paying work I do. Nothing has changed between the two cameras.
      I use an EOS RP for my testing of RF lenses, so I'm happy with mirrorless and if someone gave me an R5, I'd likely use it quite a bit BUT not enough to buy one ;-)
      It's about what you need for what you do - I mention these two cameras specifically in a recent video about 'new kit' ;-)

    I got my 5DS (with a new shutter mechanism) for £850. With that in mind, why would I upgrade to the R5 if I'm only using it for studio portrait work. (I'm still on a couple of 1DX MK1s for sport).

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 роки тому

      Indeed why? You'd get no argument from me on that ;-)
      Given the sorts of photography I do, the R5 is very nice to use, but it will be the high MP version that makes a difference for my work. Experimenting with the RP and now R5 have however gotten me past worrying about any eventual switch to mirrorless.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, that's quite a reasonable assertion - that's why I make sure here and in the more detailed written articles to indicate the quite deliberate limitations and lens choices for my testing.
      There are many aspects of high ISO, AF use and faster shooting that I did try out, but are out of my normal usage, so I've not included them. My (limited in time) testing was only to see how much use the R5 is for the types of work I do (industrial and architecture) Or, for example what's it like for the Landscape photographer who doesn't care about video overheating, AF tracking or FPS?
      Even in my 'limited' usage it's a very usable camera, but I'll leave detailed reviews in other areas of photography to proper experts in their field ;-)

      It was a masterful stroke of marketing by Canon IMHO
      Of course, in some circles I'd point to the potential of Moire with my architectural work, but in reality it was a series of photos taken with a TS-E50 and that £200

    Alright, as a print guru and lens hoarder: what's your take on the lore surrounding RF lens supremacy vis-a-vis EF or even adapted medium- and large format glass and to what extent does their superiority go if we disregard their pricing. I suppose the real test that puts the pedal to the metal will be if and when they begin converting these RF lenses to cinema lenses. Their (Canon R5 + lens lineup) current price tags make used Leica S2 look like a bargain - and we're still limited to both full-frame sensors and a Skoda-like customer service experience. I've often wondered why the 5DS(R) line never got more attention. I was on the fence when I wanted to upgrade my 6D and considered the 5D IV vs the 5DSR (I got the 5D IV). That was back when I thought camera reviews and discussion forums were the holy grail. Needless to say I like the 5D IV, but it felt like a marginal upgrade. I was (oh god this is turning into a rant) under the impression (initially) that the 5DS series was nothing special. Fast forward two years later and I'm finding out some very smart and picky photographers swear by them.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  2 роки тому

      Like all kit - for me, it's what you want to do with it. Since I borrowed the R5, I've come across very few occasions where I wish I had an R5 with me rather than my 5Ds. They were where the combination of my eyesight and a good EVF would have made a job easier. Maybe a few times in editing, I've had to put in a bit more work for an image, but it's really not enough (still) to want to replace the 5DS (not that I could afford to anyway these days)
      I only use my EOS RP for these videos (with an adapted Zuiko OM 24/2.8) - so the 5DS might get used for a few B-roll shots, no more.
      As to the lenses - I still use an EF24-70 2.8L and an EF70-200 2.8L IS bought in 2004 - although both 'got better' after repairs ~15 years ago ;-) I've only used the RF ones for a while when I had the R5 on loan - that was mainly to see what it was like with my TS-E lenses.
      I only dip into lens forums every so often, since so much of what I read is so far out it's not even wrong. Some people seem to have an almost pathological fear of adapters.
      When I recently had the H6D 100C here, I did definitely notice how much more you could get from some images, but at a cost of usability and of course expense.
      I found myself wondering which jobs I'd still choose the trusty old 5Ds (and lenses) and which the H6D - the 5Ds was not getting an early retirement...

    • @Dstonephoto
      @Dstonephoto 2 роки тому

      @@KeithCooper Interesting. I'm getting more and more tempted to purchase a 5DSR now. On a side note: if you want to see what the H6D is capable of on the video front: ua-cam.com/video/g612TWZlL7c/v-deo.html
      Pretty impressive for a rolling shutter camera.
      I've learned that I need to start taking a lot of what I read on forums with a grain of salt. At the same time, (trying to) learning about photo printers has almost convinced me it's an exercise in futility and ultimately best left to professionals.
      My only wish is that Canon made their selphie printers available in A4 format as I'm quite impressed with the b&w results but I'm limited to postcards.

      Not sure what the issue is? I save jpeg+raw to a 128GB SD card
      The card needs (low level) formatting in the camera. I then use a USB SD card reader
      Job done...

    Thanks for your insights. I am a 5dsr user, only as a hobby. I was wondering how much of a quality improvement there would be with the R 5 and it seems minor at present. That’s good as I don’t want to change yet. Yes I would love more megapixels, I shoot wildlife and like the ability to crop and maintain quality

      Glad to help. Sure there is a difference with the R5 (the 5Ds and 5Ds R are effectively identical - it was a 'marketing difference' above all else ;-) ) but not enough that I can see anyone would update for just that reason. You have to zoom in a lot to see it in the example in the written part of the review.

      @@KeithCooper There is a big difference in the dr, absolutely

      Difference - yes,
      'big difference' probably not what I'd call it ;-)
      Not enough that I could look at any image I shot with the R5 and think that I couldn't have got it with the 5Ds.
      For there to be a big difference it would imply that the 5Ds was lacking, which it isn't (I'm only talking about my testing at base ISO) We're long past the era of huge jumps in capabilities. It's one reason I tend to look at skipping generations of cameras (and partly why I'm waiting for the high MP version)

      @@KeithCooper I think the R5s will have lesser dynamic range than the R5.
      Also the noise ratio will be not better than the R5, logical I guess

      Yes, but quite likely still better than my 5Ds? I get more MP and the usability advantages I found with the R5. It would also be nice if they introduced a sensor shift multi-shot mode - obviously these features benefit my types of photography, so I can see how a lower MP version of the new sensor might give even better performance for other photographers.

    I use the Dof button on the camera to turn rear screen on or off,so while I'm shooting it's always off if I want a quick look tap DoF button do what I want then tap again and it's off.

    would prefer a review of the canon 5ds five years on.

      Indeed... I'll give it some thought (perhaps likely not until I'm looking to replace it though).
      However, it still works just fine, still glad I didn't pay the extra for the 'R' version :-)
      There are still buttons and loads of functions on it I've never used when actually working ;-)
      There is a bit more 5Ds stuff in the written article about the R5

    I love your demeanor and this measured review. There is a work-around for your LCD issue. You can set one of the buttons to automatically switch between the EVF and LCD which will make it function more like a DSLR, here is the part of my settings video where I covered it. ua-cam.com/video/pPPq06dkeqU/v-deo.html Cheers!

    for me i would welcome a larger body than the R5 has. the lenses are so large on it it seems strange to me.

      Yes - It took quite a while for me to adjust to the smaller size/heft of the 5Ds after years of using a 1Ds and 1Ds3. After using the 5Ds I was happier with the R5 - I don't use huge lenses though
