  • Canon EOS 5Ds R: The Pros and Cons of 50 Megapixels | In this episode photographer Dustin Abbott takes a real world look at how 50 megapixels plays out. He examines the pros (cropping ability, maximizing resolution, etc...) along with the cons (processor load, need for higher shutter speed, etc..) to give you a realistic view at whether you need that amount of resolution. I am having a lot of success with the 5dsr shooting weddings. I always shoot handheld and I often shoot in low light. I haven't seen issues with the 5dsr with my 200mm f/2 at shutter speeds of 1/200 or 1/250. If I have a really good technique I happily will go down to 1/100 with the big 200mm lens. As far as low light, sure there is a little more noise, however the noise is small and there is a lot more latitude for adding noise reduction and sharpening to the files. I have the 1dx2, which has the absolute best sensor Canon has made, and I can make the 5dsr images look just about as good as the images form the 1dx2.

    One of the things that I like about Dustin is that he makes you think! I want to buy a camera really bad but don’t know which one? Dustin helps by cutting through the excitement and lays out the pro and cons on cameras, I’ve been watching him for about 4 or 5 years now, my suggestion is to listen to him & take notes. I do comparisons on an excel sheet and many many times you will come to a smarter choice if you do. Thanks Dustin, you don’t know it, but you have saved me mucho dollars over the years!!

    Just bought one in 2021 for a really good price. I use it as backup camera in my wedding photography.

    Hey Dustin. Thanks for the very comprehensive review. I purchased a 5Dsr a little while back and am getting a lens kit together for this. I just watched a review you did for the Tamron 70-200 G2 V Canon's equivalent and from what I gather, the Tamron lens will be ok on the 5Dsr as you'd used it on a high res Sony camera. Thoughts? Thanks you

    Hi Dustin .. great review as always... I own a 5DSR and you nailed your review perfectly. It’s a great camera if used correctly and to what you want it to do . It is a camera intended for what it was designed for .. it’s not a wildlife body with the slow frame rate .. it’s not a great video camera .. but for stills it’s an awesome camera in resolution terms .. when it comes together it’s unbeatable for image resolution and quality .. use high end lenses .. I use a Ziess on mine for landscape photography .. excellent combination . Wildlife I use a 300mm f2.8 .. using as you mentioned a faster shutter speed is the secret to sharper images . It’s very unforgiving as you said for motion blur . But in a nutshell I am pleased with it .

    Hi Dustin, how are you? I do hope your are doing well. After a month of deep trial and error, I am overall very happy with this camera. I use mostly Adobe Bridge for photo selections, it is really fast, and I don't have more than 16 mb of ram. The lens I love is the tamron 85mm, the last lens, it's so great! Regarding resolution, the tamron 15-30, and the canon 40 mm, with those 3, things are easy,even handheld. As you said, lots of detail, even from a far distance. As I never had a ff body, this is a good first experience. And I used it with very low speed. But , I never go further than 800 ISO, if not, noise becomes unbearable... Thanks for another great video !!! Regards from Uruguay.

    I owned 300D,20D,7D,5D3,and now 5DSR.I use it mainly for real estate and 360photo and even for portrati and weddings.Its absolutely stuning.Yes it´s 5years old,and Canon already stopped production this year.It lack many fucntion against new systems and mirrorles..But still it´s best thing you can pick for mainly static things.Auto focus is much better than 5D3.Only negative is really big files (RAW) and not so fast shutter ar 5D4.

    Definitely agree with you here: the 5ds is amazing, but way too overkill for a lot of photographers, besides the ones you mentioned. As a technological stand point though it opened a new frontier though and it's exciting, but you need a whole new logistics on the work flow to handle that power!

    Excellent, once more, Dustin...
    Bar the reduced-stop margin for diffraction onset, the referenced cons are the ones I diagnosed right from the time the specs were announced. The workflow bottle-necking, then, is something that only someone who has little to no experience in digital photography post-production could fail to anticipate.
    For dedicated purposes, like product or tripod-assisted landscape photography this is a fantastic tool. For a general-purpose photographer, like myself, it would be a major PITA.
    Truth be told, Canon, themselves made this perfectly clear from the get-go. It were only some misguided net pundits who heralded about this being something it simply is not.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 років тому

      I think you are right. This is specialist tool, though many (including myself) have found it to be a solid all around camera, too.

  • @stakstonkvinge
    @stakstonkvinge 8 років тому

    The latest update from Lightroom has made it much, much better at dealing with larger files. The speed of my workflow with pictures from 5Ds has improved significantly now, and the larger files bother me much less than before. I use a 2 year old iMac.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 років тому

      My particularly machine hasn't seen quite the boost you describe. I've got an i7 machine (Dell XPS 9100) with 12GB of RAM and my primary drive is a 1TB SSD. I've got a solid video card - Nvidia GT 640 card with 2GB of DDR3 memory - but I still experience some pretty serious slowdown with preview rendering and just general period hangups in Lightroom. Photoshop seems to handle the files better overall.

    • @stakstonkvinge
      @stakstonkvinge 8 років тому +1

      +Dustin Abbott Haha, I guess beeing used to 50 megapixels on the older Lightroom, makes the upgrade look more substantial. It is way better than before, I think, but a smaller 20 megapixel file works faster, obviously. I have never tried to build 1:1 previews though.

  • @MartinSchlichenmayer

    Thanks for the video, as always a great contribution. Two things I want to mention. First, the filesize is huge but considering using CaptureOne instead of Lr it is not at all a big drawback. Don't know how they manage it and I am not getting anything for saying that, but it just doesn't bother. The second thing is, standard lenses are really performing worse than on 20-24 MP. I can only recommend buying premium glass for this camera. Again, i am not getting anything for mentioning that the Sigma 50mm Art just blew me away. Of course the Milvus 85mm as well, but thats the kind of investment to expect.

    Great explanation of the advantages/disadvantages of a high MP camera. I shoot with a Nikon D800E and sincerely hope Nikon does not follow Canon's lead with the next upgrade to the D810. Looking to upgrade eventually but 36 MP's is more than enough for almost anyone's photographic requirements. Give me a higher frame rate, better auto focus, and most importantly better high ISO capability and I'll be a happy camper at 36 full frame MP's for the rest of my shooting days. Thanks for all the time and effort put into in your informative vids, much appreciated Dustin!!!

    I really hope the 5d mark IV will have 28-32MP. I've been checking three Canon rumours sites daily for the last few years and it seems certain that the 5d4 will have much higher dynamic range, 4k internal video, dual pixel AF, RGB metering, and possibly a touchscreen, GPS and Wifi. The biggest unknown at this point is the megapixel count. I hope they don't go for 24MP as Canon currently does not have a real answer to the D810. The 5DS/R are certainly good, but only for resolution (not dynamic range/high iso). I really don't want to wait for the 5DS/R successor...

    Hi Dustin, Very nice review of Canon DS-R Have been trying to decide on a full frame dslr ... want that medium format quality... Actually thought about the Fuji GFX 50 but want to stay with 35MM dslr for ease of use and lens selection and cost... Medium Format systems expensive..IE. Blad, Phase One, etc... $50K-$70K no thanks.
    Both Canon and Nikon full formats do look attractive. After being a newspaper and freelance/portrait photog for most of my career i'm semi retired now and have need for the larger MegaPix camera. There is a clear diff in crop sensor images vs full frame, and some of my new projects will require large files for large wall size prints.
    (As an example... Used my crop sensor Canon and photog friend let me use his older Nikon D800 full frame for an aerial assignment....Shot both in RAW, amazing how full frame holds the details in the highlights esp, so much better than crop sensor) I was sold then! And what a differnce when printed large 36"x48".... A very clear difference! Crop sensor couldnt compare.
    I have and do use both Canon and Nikon, but leaning toward this Canon full frame. (thought about the Sony as well, just dont want to have to buy new lenses and like the feel of 35mm DSLR vs smaller camera bodies)
    Think i would/could be happy either with this Canon or Nikon d850 file size. Both good systems.... Think the Canon lenses focus quicker... just boils down to personal choice i guess.
    Your reveiw was helpful... Thanks
    Jack

    Dustin I was wondering if you could help me, so in October I bought a 1DX second hand from a camera store and it worked perfectly but then 2 months later I noticed it would get dirt inside the viewfinder assembly box I just ignored it even though I didn't like it, then in December I bought another 1DX this one brand new and after a few weeks it also managed to get dirt inside the viewfinder box so now I got angry and brought it to CPS they said it would be very hard and expensive to clean that so I left it again.... then a month ago I bought a 5DS and it too got dirt inside the view finder box however it happened the day I got it, I barely switch lenses and usually keep a 24mm 1,4 ii and 70-200 on each so I'm sort of lost at how this keeps happening to me, any tips or advice on what I could do to stop this from happening?

      That seems strange to me. The 1Dx is one of the most robustly built cameras on the planet, so I'm surprised that you've had that issue repeatedly. You're sure it's not just on the mirror? I find that using a little squeeze blower can do wonders at getting bits of dust out of your field of vision.

      Dustin Abbott Pretty sure, it doesn't show up on the final image and I can only see it while looking through the viewfinder, I i mean I'm not babying my gear when I'm out in Iceland or in the Arctic circle taking pictures but as you said I expected the 1DX to be able to not have problems like this especially after just a month of use, with the 5DS on the other hand i'm just in shock.

      The other place to look is on the underside of the focus screen. You can easily access that and the mirror and check them. It's rare to get something actually in the viewfinder box.

    • @MrKdr500
      @MrKdr500 8 років тому +1

    Unfortunately Canon, in contrast to Nikon, which respects more the professionals who have the Nikon D850, has not presented any new firmware. He could very comfortably. She generally doesn't take care of her models. We have invested a lot of money to buy them. By force he made a new firmware for the 1dx mark iii. Could also be for the canon 5dsR. At least for digital noise and focus. Too bad. We feel cheated.

    No, motion blur does not show up more on 50mp
    say, if a motion smear took 1 degree of rotation (say, 2% of the entire frame), it would still take 2% of the entire frame, be it 8mp or 58mp.
    so, if you don't crop, there will be no difference.
    and there is always the advantage of denoising 50mp vs, say, 26mp. the individual noise blotch is smaller, thus details shine through better.
    Noisewise, at iso 12800 this camera is better than canon eos rp and canon eos r if you shoot raw and then process. the jpeg engine is a bit too old, so yeah it undermines high iso performance for jpeg shooters vs newer gear.
    tha camera has more pro's than con's
    the real downside is dynamic range. it is a joke in 2023.
    BUT i'm still getting it VS canon eos RP and R, because it is better for the type of shooting I do

The workflow is a 1:1 import render as well and some catalog optimizations in LR to make it worth while. It's just being prepared for the work flow is all. But ya ... landscape requires the megapixel and willingness to deal with it. I'm sure any medium digital format shooter (professionally) has something of this sort. I'm only an extreme hobbyist, but I sell enough of my larger print stuff on metal ... I want the largest images I can get and it's reality. The only suggestion I would make .. is do a dual import -> one to local machine catalog, but the second to the NAS 12-16TB solution with Western Digital Red Pro drives w/ a hot spare is the way to go. Only way to assure of catalog integrity and ability to work back over time.
