    He really nailed it. I’ve been using 5DsR for a few years now, and I made that choice because I do so much aerial photography, where that high resolution really has a purpose, but the down side is definitely the noise performance of the sensor in lower light situations. This has been seen in some other very high pixel-density sensors as well, including the pricey Phase One. I am at the point where I would not actually recommend the 5DSR unless you have a specialty application like aerial or scientific photography where you really need it, or you are always shooting in perfectly controlled conditions, where you can avoid the noise. I hesitate to use it at anything above 800 ISO.

    Best review ever of the 5DS/R hands down! You went straight for the core points about this 50MP camera. Wasn't terribly impressed with that interview but later on you killed it by yourself! You are a very clever man indeed! Congrats and best wishes.

    up until last week had the 5ds r and amazed by the detail in every shot. unfortunately got stolen last week with my 5dmrk2 and 4 L lenses and insurance dragging their feet so was looking at a quick replacement in the meantime. was going to get the 5dsr again then looked back at the last 20 jobs I've done and everything was used on websites including an ecommerce site at 540x540 pixels. to be honest not one client mentioned anything when going from 5dmrk2 to the 5ds r well one did he complained the files were too big ! looking back over old photos on the 5dmrk2 I'm now asking why i upgraded at all as the 5dmrk2 files still have so much detail. I do regular case studies for a client that sells door handles, hinges etc for some amazing buildings and recently went to their new office and they had completely covered one wall, about 4m x 2.5m with one of my 5dmrk2 images of an interior i did for them and it was sharp as a tack. i think we all get a bit obsessed with the number of pixels. I've been round the block from canon to hasselblad to phase one then back to canon. now considering just buying another 5dmrk2 !

      5d Mark ii is hard to beat, the images I get from it just get better as I’ve owned it and no one complains. The extra mega pixels is great, yet if someone steals my camera I’m sure I’ll just get another 5d Mark ii.

    Been a professional portrait photographer for over 18 years. Published in many magazines, websites, books and newspapers. Funny thing that I actually don't want all those details. Ultra ultra sharp camera's are not my cup of tea. If you see every red dot on the skin, every wrinkle in a face or on lips, every single hair out of place, it makes for much more effort going into post production. I have more high end camera's but most of my best shots are still being made with my 5dmark 2. Especially women are much more flattering with a softer focus. As long as the eyes are sharp i'm good. Besides, unless your photo's are being used for huge billboards, even the 5d Mark 1 and 2 are still plenty sharp.
    With that said, I can appreciate a good razor sharp picture, just not for portraits unless you want to accentuate wrinkles and such. So to 99%, of the buyers i would even advise the Mark 3 over the Mark 4. Keep the extra money and buy a good lens. Yes the mark 4 is better, but do you need it? If it comes down to making beautiful portraits The Mark 2 or 3 + a solid f1.4, 1.8 prime or even the brilliant L 70 200 2.8IS, will serve pretty much all your needs and more.
    Even in 2021.
    The nr1 trick to making great photo's and being published is not about owning the newest most expensive camera. Far from it. If done correctly your employers won't even notice the difference between a cheapo camera and the most expensive one.
    It's aIl about making beautiful pictures.
    I'm not saying you shouldn't buy a good camera because you should! But just remember the beauty of a picture is not in the equipment but in the photographer.
    Just my 2 cents.
    Thanks for sharing. Great video.

      @@Sondercreative Thanks :). And yeah I understand it was not the point of your video. Your video is a great comparison between the 2, I get that. My comment should be seen separate from your video topic!
      It was ment for people in general which are looking at these sort of video's and all of a sudden think they need the most expensive of the 2 in order to make good sharp photo's. On a daily basis I see locals and tourist shooting with the most expensive camera's and lenses while all they need is a good camera phone. Extremely overkill for what they are shooting. Like driving a nascar or F1 car to the grocerie store. And their photo's still suck....😂Anyhoeee...again, great video, keep it up my friend! Always enjoy your video's.

    I had two 5DSR's and a 5D4 plus eleven of Canon's best lenses. The DSR can make some pretty high res files, especially when using a Zeiss Otus. Just hold it steady when you have good light. The 4 is more versatile with better dynamic range. I travel a lot in an RV and keep multiple cameras attached to lenses at the ready. If I were forced to only have one of the two cameras, I would take the 4. Now having said all of that, I sold all the Canon gear in 2018 for one Leica SL and a 24-90 plus a 90-280. That was a good decision as my hit rate improved as did image quality. I was also able to downsize from 3 rolling cases to 2 rolling cases. What's in the second case, you ask? My Leica S medium format camera. I've been shooting for 50 years. If I could go back to around 1980, I think I would rather have had one Leica and one lens than a couple of Nikons and multiple lenses, although my Nikonos V was a great camera.

    Great review! As a 5D4 owner I'd like to make a few comments.
    On a recent trip I actually tried to use the Wifi to backup the camera in the field, but it was a disaster. Basically the battery which would normally be good for 900 shots gives up the ghost after 250 or so. And, on top of that, when back at the camp for the evening, the wifi only runs on the 2.4 GHz band is thus is pretty slow verses just popping the card out and into a reader to copy out the pictures. So I found the wifi to be considerably less useful than I thought it would be. I didn't want to waste the battery life in the field, and it took too long to backup photos over it back at camp. So I'd call it a no-go. Just too slow.
    I don't own the 5DSR but on the last trip I would have liked more than 30MP. One of the other guys had a high-end Nikon, near 40MP sensor plus a 500mm prime (I had 5D4 with the 100-400mm telephoto). The combinationn of 40MP and 500mm made a huge difference verses 30MP and 400mm. But in comparing the photos closely, I think just boosting the Canon to 40MP would have made the comparison a lot closer on the shots that already had good light. Sharpness wasn't the issue, honestly. That is, ignoring the other advantages of a 500mm prime and just looking at the result in good light long distance shots. (Not all was lost, the 100-400 is a lot more mobile so I could get shots that he couldn't, but for slow-moving birds or far-away birds, he had a huge advantage). And I should say that I also own the 6D, and having 30MP in the 5M4 verses the ~20MP in the 6D was also a big step up. So I do kinda wish the 5DM4 ran 40MP.
    AF is really excellent for fast-moving targets. Having the low-pass filter wasn't as big a problem as I thought it would be... Canon's DLO (either in-camera or in their software) really clears up off-center focus nicely and also helps more than I thought it would with sharpness, even in the center. Particularly when I had to pull 2048-bit-wide crops out my pictures. Canon's eye detection at center-spot could use with a firmware fix, though. It tends to focus on the eyelid and not the eye.
    The dual-pixel AF is also excellent. The dual-pixel RAW storage feature, though, is garbage. It just isn't worth 80MByte RAW files and slower shot rate.
    I don't really do video so I can't comment on the 4K other than the 'Motion JPEG? Really CANON????'. There is a rumored firmware update that will fix the other complaints I've read about (crop and lack of C-LOG). That said... I'm mostly into stills for books, so...
    Overall, I'm happy with my 5DM4. It's a big step-up from my previous camera, the 6D (and I also have a 5D2). I still use all three. But at the same time I think Canon is still behind Nikon by at least two years and I wish they would pick up their game. I'm too invested in lens to switch.
    -Matt

    Great comparison, correct me if I'm wrong here but I would say that the 5DS is less forgiving and less suited to motion where the focal point would change. The 5DS from what you've said feels like it is much less forgiving if the shot is not quite bang on.
    I have the 5DIV and love it. The WiFi as was mentioned is a feature I really wanted, I love having the ability to pull a photo off my camera inb the middle of what i'm shooting and send it to the person I just shot via air drop on my phone or whatsapp/wechat/what ever, people seem to really appreciate this and it adds a little bit of extra satisfaction from shooting.

    Great film and I need to get to Leeds soon. So here is how I use Canon. Since 2006 I have used Canon 1DsMKIII and 7DMKII as its side kick with film all over UK and EU for commercial clients, I have sold and printed prints up to 30ft x 20ft and nobody ever complained. I have moved onto 5DIII amazing camera, 5DIV just great for everything and the EOS R for film and 10 bit recording for TV with my C300MKII both 4k 10bit. I sold the 5Div after a year and bought the 5DsR for DPS magazine shoots and it does the business, in fact I bought the 5Ds and had it for 2 magazine shoots and replaced it for the 5DsR. If you want a camera that can do everything almost perfect then the 5Div is the one, If you want dynamic range then EOSR delivers in spades, I use it on a Ronin gimble for magazine TV channels with the C300 MKII as unit one camera. What you say here is so right, with the 5ds R if you nail focus you nail perfection, if you slightly off the mark then you are never going to fix it. The EOS R is more a camera to use for either film or stills but switching between the two a full pro standard can leave you with ‘I wish I had used something else’ like 5DIV or 5DsR. So, I will leave you with this, the 5DsR Is a full pro photographers’ camera and when its goo its fantastic.

    opening up a lens to maximum aperture is usually the worst part of the lens and a bad test condition as the alias filter is in mk4 is playing a part here. The 5DSR is a tripod camera, landscapes or studio due to the increased pixel density you will find it a lot harder to get critical focus. The Mk4 is an all rounder. Considering A3 is 3508 pixels x 4961 pixels you will see the Mk4 at 6720 x 4480 has plenty of room to crop. Unless you print really big I wouldn't get the 5Dsr, or get it as a second body. Even in landscape the mk4 has better dynamic range which will render better skys than the 5Dsr. Both great cameras as colours fantastic and the 5Dsr will save you a lot of money, but shoot more steadily with higher shutter.

    If you/anyone in general is in need of the resolution, I'd skip the 5DSR and shoot large format with a digital back. The Mk 4 is a better camera for "most" uses. The SR adds a lot of phaff in order to gain a few pixels, while adding a lot of limitations such dynamic range, noise etc. Large format and medium format also are more difficult to use, but you get far more benefits in terms of other things, not only including the digital image quality, but also (depending on the type of camera) other things like camera controls (rise/fall, shift etc).

    Once again, a very informative video! I'm pretty firmly tied up with MFT at the moment, but besides photographing a little bit of everything, I also go in for tracking mount type astrophotography,so I'd go with the mark IV: anything I have to adjust on a camera during the day is always worse at under a dark sky with no light, and the mark IV seems to be a more flexible choice in that respect. Already looking forward to your next video!

    I don't know what features canon is holding back. The 5D IV has everything I need in a camera. So for me canon is not giving me the finger it's giving me a high five.

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  7 років тому +3

      clickonmike Comes down to expectation I guess. Considering what else is available in the market many people including myself felt a little short changed by Canon because they have offered severely crippled video features on this camera. I know some people will say it's not a video camera, but, it is. They even discuss and stress how important video shooters are to them when discussing the mark IV.
      If you're happy with it then I'm happy for you. But considering what else is available this is a middle finger from Canon to many of their customers.

      Most videographers in the world do not shoot movies. DSLRs and similar mirrorless type cameras are not just for photos. It would similar to suggest that the iPhone is only to make phone calls.
      Technology evolves and that mentality is outdated.

    • @Sondercreative

      But cell phones are not used for professional photography either... so Canon 6D2 not having the best tech for video shooting is not a big deal for those that appreciate Canon for more than just video taking. Reliability is important too...those Sony cameras have many issues that Sony has yet to address.

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  7 років тому +4

      The point about cell phones was that technology evolves and a certain piece of tech doesn't do just one thing. Allot of people like to hide behind the argument of how DSLRs are for photos, well that's simply not true. DSLRs are now used for both photos and video and are judged on both factors. Saying it isn't, doesn't change the reality of the situation.

    Time flies fast - did you see B&H has the 5DSR on sale for $1,500 - talk about middle fingers to the customer! I'd hate to have paid full retail! Not that this is an issue with any recent cameras but the touch screen of the 5D4 is useful for navigating menus quick. I found setting up the 5DSR I kept reaching for the screen.

    Thanks so much for this. I have gone back and forth on this. In the end I waited and got the 5D Mark IV but still often look at the 5DSR to add to my kit. I did get the 42 Megapixel Sony A7RII back awhile instead of the 5DSR because I thought I would use it for Video but that's never really happened. Also did want to try the EVF and IBIS to help focusing when using my Tilt and Shift 24 and 17 and for working with smaller primes but the extra cost of maintaining two system has gotten to be a burden so I wonder more and more about adding the 5DSR.

    I do agree that a higher Mpix camera will give you a sharper image, but what I'm seeing in the comparison is a difference in the DOF "slice" on the face, not a detail issue. Shoor stopped-down and you'll eliminate this, at which point you can then say which one is better. Or shoot static test charts where you can really dial in that focus.
    I have a 5D4 anyway, I was split between the two when it came time to upgrade and I picked the Mark IV due to the usability and the superior sensor (DR/noise -wise). 30.4Mpix will still be plenty for work, considering that the very top-end 1D (and Nikon's top-end) cameras have a piss-poor resolution in comparison and are still used by pros all over :)

    nice rev's , considering 5dsr has 20mpx more and no aa filter , the mk4 seems to be holding pretty good , u should try and use the digital image optimizer, i think it rises the sharpness and detail , although u need to wait 3 sec for the camera to process. and as comparing to mirrorles camera ( since it's quite the hype right now ), to me right now if there is a reason for me to switch is because of the tilting screen , it makes my work so much easier , esp low angle situation

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  7 років тому

      I agree the Mark IV does a great job holding up the 5DSR it is a good camera. Mirrorless cameras do have a few things to update and I think once that's done they could start to overtake DSLRs quite quickly.
      Thank you for watching my video and leaving the comment.

  • @Spazza42
    @Spazza42 4 роки тому

    Without sounding obvious, it all just comes down to what you’re shooting. Unless you desperately need faster shooting and better low light performance the 5DS does 90% of what the Mk4 does but brings an extra 20MP to the table. At least it allows for extra reach and aggressive cropping if needed. The main things you’d want 50MP for will likely be stationary subjects (portraits, landscape and nature), if you have to have a high resolution shot you can always build a panorama on the Mk4 anyway. Yes it’s more work in post, but with today’s editing software it’ll be a flawlessly stitched shot....
    Unless you NEED good video, just just whichever is cheaper or more easily available locally.

    I'm curious if you've tried the 5DSR with a really long lens (for example 500 or 600) ? Potentially interested in pairing it with 600/4 and a 1.4x tele. This combination has worked well with the 1DX. Also this question is open to anyone who has tried 5DSR with extra long lenses ( > 400). Good video!

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  6 років тому +1

      Patrick Taylor I haven’t unfortunately, the longest lens I own is a 135mm most of what I shoot I need wider lenses. I will say that if it works well with the 1DX then it should work the same if not slightly better with the 5DSR. Also due to the resolution you’ll significantly more detailed images

    You can buy the Wifi card for the 5DSR for 25 dollars and it only takes up the SD card slot that most people don't use anyways. You're right, once you use the wireless you will always use it. I do envy the higher ISO range the Mark 4 has, however working with the 5DSR has made me a better technical photographer and I get comments on how tact sharp my photos and color are. When you shoot at 50 MP you enter the class of medium format cameras, even if the sensor is still smaller at full frame. Where can you buy an awesome medium format camera for 4k new and now sells for about 2.5k foreign models? Only Canon offers this and perhaps Sony does have 42 MP but Sony's is considered inferior in my opinion. Just my two cents.

      I’m getting more and more call for video work. The 5D4 seems to work except for clients expectations for what equipment should look like. But it is working for the corporate video that I have been shooting and editing.
      Thank you for your video, it’s alway good to review some the equipment you already have and the work flow that others follow.

    What about the 5DS? If I want the 50mp, without the hassle of making my clients look like hairy pimple-beasts.... seems good not to have that low pass filter, no?

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  7 років тому +3

      LOL, I properly chuckled at that haha.
      I actually had the 5DS and really didn't enjoy using it. At that resolution the difference is noticeable and the softness looked to me like a very thin layer of grease over everything. The 5DSR has amazing clarity and moire has never been an issue for myself and many other photographers I know who shoot with it.
      I personally recommend against the 5DS.

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  7 років тому +2

      If you know for a fact you need the extra megapixels then 5DSR. Try and avoid using cropping as a reason for the higher megapixels because a longer lens will be a better option to cropping in. If you're happy with 30mp (more than enough realistically speaking) then the mark IV is such a good camera so many extra features that make a huge difference.
      I would say Mark IV as the default option unless....

    Amazing video. I am currently looking for an upgrade of my Canon Eos 6D (anything with a bit more resolution than the 20Pixel sensor of the 6D). I shoot mainly architecture on a tripod but occasionally also events. The combination of a Canon 5DSr AND a 5D-IV is probably the best actually. One for landscapes and architecture (5DSr) on a tripod and one for events handheld. But it's still a pretty amount of cash, even after 3 years of the introduction of those camera's....

    As a user updated from Canon 50D, i wanna say that 5D4 totally satisfies my requirement. Giving up my old Canon Lens set and turning to Sony camp? It´s obviously not wise even if a small adapter could solve the problem. I prefer the high resolution of 5DsR, especially for starry sky. But 5D4 can´t be really replaced under some circumstances with its wider focus range and faster focus ability. After all 5D4 is an all-round champion among its brothers(ofc except 1D series).

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  7 років тому

    Coming in a year and a half later, absolutely disgusted and appalled by my 6dMk2 and it's terrible autofocus, I've been toying with the idea of selling my stuff and going to the Sony. I have Sigma 35 and 85 art lenses, and don't want to cut my losses yet, so I've decided I want to go between the 5DSR and the MarkIV.
    Thank you so much for probably one of the best comparison videos I've ever seen. I'm going to look into the MarkIV now!!
    Hopefully my Art lenses on a better body can actually produce some in focus images :-D My 6dMk2 only gets about 30% of my shots in focus.

    New cameras capture too much detail for most uses, especially portraits of people. Nobody wants to see every hair on their face, every hair under a girls chin and the parts of their eyebrows they’ve missed when plucking. There’s a reason people still like the pictures from a 5D mki or 5D mkii. Having all this extra detail from these newer high megapixel cameras just means more work in post processing. Because I’m yet to find a female model who wants all the hairs on their chin and all blemishes on their face visible in their photoshoot. Cameras are becoming so advanced that their pictures are losing character and just becoming too clinical.

I just love good gear and I do a lot of portraits and fashion modeling on the side. I don't have that kind of cash to upgrade every time a new camera comes out either and I'm not a professional but I I can take great pics. I'm probably not utilizing it to it's full potential but I'm OK with that. Thanks!

    ~ Thank you for this very honest video .. It confirmed the choice I needed to make. I need the best low light performance, shooting musicians for three music magazines. The speed and accuracy, plus increased dynamic range, made the 5D Mk4 my number one choice. It's a fabulous camera .. I've tried the Sony A7R3 and it's a great camera too, but to me it's ugly, and the ergonomics/handling in actual use are not a patch on my 5D range cameras .. I have the 5D2, 5D3 and now the 5D4 .. Plus the final straw .. The Canon 70-200 f2.8L Mk2 is THE very very best lens in the world for the shots that I take ... ;-)

    I got my 5DSR instead of MK4. It's a very good camera with astonishing image quality. The blur from the high Mpix exists but has been exaggerated by people. I can pretty easily take clear photos (100% zoom in) without a tripod on 1/20 sec, 100mm (With IS). Also people talk about how bad the ISO performance and Dynamic range of the camera is compare to Nikon and Sony. Firstly, those difference is visible only when we use low ISO on these 3 cameras; when they all use 1600 or 2000+ iso, the difference is nearly invisible. For dynamic range: I don't know why people that heavily rely on fixing exposure in post-processing? Why can't just practice more and learn how to use better lighting and exposure when we are talking photos. Mark IV is good but over priced for now and I wouldn't care if I have those extra features or not.

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  7 років тому

      I can't get many sharp images at 1/20 sec my style of shooting is mostly with a tripod so I don't have allot of practice shooting handheld. I think you may be better than most people if you're able to get tack sharp images with that but for the most part, the higher MP count does make a noticeable difference.
      I agree with you about the 5DSR and the 5D Mark IV, personally, I much prefer using the 5DSR.
      Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. I hope you're well.

    Great comparison and articulaltion of the critical factors. I currently have a 5d mkii and shoot mainly landscape, macro, travel some portrait , i want to get into commercial architecture and product and am not sure if the 5dsr resolution would be better for my shooting needs and a worthy upgrade, i dont know if i should upgrade from the Mkii or just purchase the 5dsr as a second body for specialised work ? Also i have all imaged stabilised lenses would image blur be a big issue on the 5dsr ? Btw the mkii has banding issues from iso6400 onwards, limited but accurate autofocus, inadequate resolution, im torn between the mkiv and the 5dsr and any suggestions would be great :)
    I miss the film days when it was purely based on skill and not mainly spec , but dslrs are so versatile these days !!!

That is, what is the image quality like when shooting at low light on both the 5DSR and the 5D mkiv at high iso, for example if you are shooting a wedding in church and you can not use flash, and you have to bump the iso up to 3200 or higher because it is dark, or if you are at the reception where you have poor lighting? Are you able to make a video on shooting at low light and high iso? Thank you in advance from Mark in Australia.

      I tested the Sony before going with the 5D Mark IV. I was really disappointed with the feel of the Sony was just too small. I don't think you will feel Canon gave you the finger after trying a 5D mark IV. It is a huge step better than the 5D III. For instance, the WIFI allows you to touch screen focus in both photo AND Video while recording. This can be done from either a mobile phone or touchscreen laptop. Absolutely amazing feature that no other camera has. If you look at all the new features which you are getting for the same price you spent for your Mark III you will see it is a much more modern camera.

      3rd Eye Media I'm amazed that most people can't see this. The 5Div improved on virtually every meaningful aspect of the 5Diii and is light years ahead of it. As you said, same price, vastly superior camera. People are turning into spec sheet fanboys largely driven by Sony's hyped-up style of advertising and they're overlooking what really matters to a photographer.

    • @MrKdr500

      @cooloox Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I thought i was the crazy one for a moment. I really love this camera and it has made me start shooting way more than with my old 5D3. I will tell you a secret. I get way more girls phone numbers now than ever before. Why? Well when I am out at an event and I take a beautiful girls picture I used to just give her a business card and wait for them to call.
      Now, when i take their picture I tell them to tap their phone to my camera if it has NFC or I pair their phone and send them the photo directly to their phone. Then they go wow! that was neat and it becomes the intro to new conversation and opportunities....
      Also, once I get hem all paired up they almost always want to take more photos. They tell me how many times photographers have taken their photo but they never get them. So as you can see just that feature alone has made this camera worth the upgrade for me. Everyone wants to use their photos on Instagram and Facebook. I can now get them that .JPEG directly out of the camera instantly and have their phone number for future shoots.
