  • The Jaguar XKR and Maserati GranTurismo are both outstanding GT cars for their price range on the used market, with two similar yet distinctly different approaches to a lovely performance car. One, a muscular and simple slice of British elegance, and the other a more delicate but wonderfully gothic Italian beauty.
    The question is though, with both cars offering great advantages and a disadvantage or two here and there, which one should you actually go for depending on what you're looking for in a GT car? Let's pit these beautiful 2+2 GT cars head to head and find out...

    Thank you so much for this comparison. It was very helpful in my purchasing decision. I too was considering both cars and your analysis was spot on. For me it was close and the Maserati surprised me, but I purchased an XKR this past weekend. Driving it back from NY to Michigan, the XKR was in its element. It was smooth and effortless, and the torque was always there when I needed it. Excellent car.

    I thought I was alone in being of the mindset that: "I will almost always choose high torque over high power".
    So glad others think that too. Hello from a fellow XKR owner.

      For sure. And a lot of that comes from my love of performance diesels actually, lol. My older car, the Touareg V10 was all torque, and I absolutely loved it.

      Torque is king.

  • @morgantaylor9271
    @morgantaylor9271 2 роки тому +15

    the main thing here is reliability, the jag 4.2 engine was a very reliable engine, and as mentioned much cheaper to fix if something does go wrong, also that extra torque makes it in my opinion the better choice, I do have bias though because I grew up with jaguars.

    • @lolickypeepee23xdd6
      @lolickypeepee23xdd6 2 роки тому +1

      granturismo also is very well known to have very reliable engine as well, its the cam variators in older models that was the main issue for most people, and smaller electrical issues happen with both- jag is gonna be much cheaper to keep for sure tho and overall it is definitely more reliable, though that isnt to the say the gt is unreliable, especially for a maserati

    Great review. I have both 2014 F type 5.0 litre R. and 2010 4.7 Grand Turismo. Both have excellent qualities and yes, torque is the push you into the seat back want. No need to "rev to destruction". If your not being pushed into the seat back, time to give it another gear. Around Queensland Raceway (Australia) both handle excellently. Sure the F type has the more torque but frankly is not leaving the Trizmo "in the dust" by any means. Comfort, refinement, finish? internally on par. Externally, probably the Italians win marginally with body panel lines and gaps more refined. Daily drivers? no problem for either. Reliability, no problems with either, just carry an OBD reader in the Trizmo to cancel out those ridiculous false sensor warnings which Maserati didn't quite refine. As owner of both cars, I agree with the review by Beards in Cars, very realistic. Happy motoring! now....which one shall I take out today. Oops four people travelling, guess the choice today is made!

      @DAONEYOUHATE007 No, even my pre-Ford Jaguars were reliable. I had a 1988 XJ6 that I kept until the car was 30 years old. and I needed more space for another. In its life, It needed only an alternator and a fuel pump after 20 years of use. Though mileage was low at around 90K miles. Ford only shared some switchgear with Jaguar. The drive trains in most Jaguars (exclusions such as the X-type notwithstanding) were all Jaguar design.

    This has been my first visit to your reviews which I really enjoyed as I was faced with a similar decision in 2012 after visiting my N Ireland main Jaguar/Ferrari/Maserati dealership to have a software upgrade to my then Jaguar XF 3.0d. Having an hour to spare I walked into the Maserati showroom and enquired if it would be possible to have a test drive in a GranTurismo, there were two on the forecourt. That proved to be no problem and shortly afterwards I was taken out in their new Black demonstrator, with around 55 mies on the clock. I immediately fell in love with the car, if you have ever driven in a car that felt so perfect and natural on a first drive this was it. That's when the decision had to be made, I also had had the thoughts of. moving up from my three year old XF to a 2013 my XK 5.0l which the dealership kindly brought to my home so that I could test dive one one my own locality. They had a 6 month 2300 mile car available as opposed to a three year old White GT at a much higher cost than the XK. Even though I had never owned a Maserati I did join their excellent forum and that's when the realisation of the potential cost down the road of ownership made the decision for me. I subsequently bought an XK 5.0L at. 6 months and kept for the remainder of its three year warranty. I still regret selling it but made the decision on a family commitment requirement. Did I make the correct choice back in 2012? I know that in the years since I have spent more money changing mr car which would have equally have kept a GT on the road, I will never know for sure now as an Octogenarian now I feel I have left it too late.

    I really like both cars, but for me its gotta be the XKR. Should be cheaper to run, I like the torquier engine, and the exterior styling isn't completely outmatched by the GT.
    The biggest issue I have against the GT is the interior, which I don't like the look of at all. Much prefer the interior on the Gran Sport or 4200.
    That said, if I didn't have to own either car and just got to drive one occasionally, I'd go Maser every time.

I get 23 mpg on long trips averaging 80 mph... the back seat space wins and the looks are killer. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either pick, although I'd go for the 5.0 litre Jag or the 4.7 litre Maserati

    Puts me in mind of a 21st century remake of the “Italian Job.” On the one hand, exquisite Italian engineering with upkeep costs that only a mafiosi could bear. On the other, a fabulous car with a domestic and solid parts network and a jag specialist in virtually every big town. Strangely, I prefer the V8 burble of the Jaguar, and I wasn’t expecting that. Let’s face it, both are beyond first class, but for me it’s the Jaguar XKR. Thanks for a great video. Cheers! Nick.

    Maserati must be newer than 2007 because it gots the ZF box. Maserati actually sold these with the stradale kit. Infact you don't want a stradale. You want the 4.7s with ZF. Stradale unfortunately had the ferrari f1 gearbox and anyone who has used it will know its not nice.

    Good video. I went Maserati when I had this choice - Granturismo MC Stradale. Every journey in the car is an event, and that sound just cannot be beaten. Agree that parts prices can be steep - but I haven’t needed any apart from tyres and batteries (in three years). Servicing is OK away from main dealers, and there are some very good independents. The cars do have a tendency to show worrying warning lights when the battery is down on charge, but really that’s a question of they like to be used. Only worries are subframes are prone to rust - you need to get an older Granturismo up in the air to inspect.

    Great video, I always dismiss the 4.2 Mazza on the basis of the reviews vs the later 4.7 and I love the look of both - with the Mazza winning on looks and sound but the Jag winning on cost of ownership and torque (not driven either but I do love torque - had a V8 M3 and found it gutless… just didn’t suit me 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️). What gearbox would you/people go for in the Mazza? 🤔

      I actually traded in this XKR for a facelift ZF Quattroporte, with the same motor as this GranTurismo. Engine wise go for whatever you prefer really, but for gearboxes ZF all the way. Zero contest with the Cambio in my opinion, especially in something like a GT or limo like mine. An automated manual with little to no actual use as an auto without eating its own clutch just doesn't make sense. They should've stuck to having the Cambio in just the 3200, 4200 and GranSport series.

    I did weigh all of my options before I made my final purchase on an ‘06 Aston Martin Vantage and the Granturismo was one of the many that I was looking. The Aston just did it for me more so than all the others. Manual option, rarely see Astons as much as I’ve seen Ferraris, at least in my area. The engine presentation when you lift the bonnet(no plastics), the quality of the exterior and interior fit finish are another level, if you want to listen to music other than the engine, the sound system is amazing! The owners are top class and all willing to help and really approachable from a DIY standpoint, and if you want more power you can really up the power to an extra 50BHP pretty easily despite being NA. And how successful the Vantage was in pro racing really establishes its pedigree.

    • @HSGAutomotive

      Ah yeah. I reviewed the final year of that shape Vantage on the channel last year, a 2014 Roadster with the dash button auto option with paddles. Lots to love, but it was £50k, and I just don’t feel it’s worth four times my XKR for my money. I consider Aston and Maserati to be in a very similar place on the market actually. Higher costs and some reduced reliability, but unmatched badge panache and presence.

    These were the 2 cars I went between 2 and a half years ago and in the end it was a bit of a no-brainer really, the Jag has a lot more boot space, significantly more reliable, the fuel economy is actually incredibly good for a 4.2V8 (I got >28mpg on a trip to Italy and back) and is much, much, cheaper to service and repair when things do go wrong.
    I also think it's a more elegant, timeless shape, but that's not to say I don't make a weird noise of lust and envy on the rare occasions I see a Granturismo on the road!
    I did actually hire a Grancabrio for 2 days in Las Vegas and there the noise it made, the rooflessness and the flashiness was superb, l can't think of any car under 200k that would have been more fun, and that's where I've landed on this, the XK is a car to own and use and have amazing GT road trips using, the GT is the car to be seen in, cruise around in and have once in a lifetime adventures in (North Coast 500 for example)
    If you have a primary, reliable car and can afford it as a toy, I'd get the GT in a heartbeat, if not, get the XK

Both have their gremlins, mostly electrical, and the most notable difference on a Maserati is that some parts have a longer wait to arrive. Maserati's are definitely more delicate and feel more like supercars, whereas the Jag's forte is being simple and basically a muscle car in a tux

    Great content. I want to preface my comment with, Jaguar and Maserati are my two favourite car brands, along with Land Rover and Lotus. So please take my comment with that in mind.
    I’m a fan of both, but Jaguar wins it for me.
    The Maserati is exclusively a Playboy machine, and if you’re not a playboy or don’t like that image, you’ll never be satisfied with the Maserati, even though it’s quite a glorious machine.
    The Jaguar plays a different game - the driver could be the perfect Gentleman, he could be a Playboy, or he could mix the two personas and be a charming rogue. That’s why I think the Jag suits me a bit better, as it’s more accommodating to your various moods.
    There is one point I consider, though. Let’s be real here, it starts with production numbers. Maserati is doing good if it can shift 50,000 cars in a year. Comparatively, that’s not a lot. Jaguar shifts at least 4 or 5 times more then that, at a ballpark figure of 200,000 cars or more.
    With such low production numbers, one has to question the Maserati’s performance longevity. It may be rated for a higher number, will it continue to be able to pull such numbers? I can’t help but think not without the help of some extremely diligent and passionate owners.
    The Jaguar may be rated for less, but due to their higher production output and ability to develop their cars further, it makes me think that its performance longevity in particular will be better than the Maserati.
    To illustrate what I am on about, if I’ve been unclear, let us suppose we have two identically specified cars, much like we saw in this video here. Both are in the same ballpark, give or take. Both have had an equal service scheduling respected, and have had an appropriate amount of care taken over the years.
    In such a scenario, I’ll bet the Jaguar is better able to reach its theoretical top speed (when de-restricted) then the Maserati. In order for the Maserati to continue to pull such high numbers, it seems to me that it would require a lot more TLC, especially given it excitable nature. Whereas since the Jaguar is much more relaxed in nature, I doubt it’ll lose as many horses over the years as the Maserati will.
    If anyone reads this and has an opinion, or if you’ve owned one or both, please let me know - I’d greatly love to hear you’re viewpoint.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  2 роки тому +1

      Though not owning a GranTurismo, I have had two Quattroporte’s aside from my XKR, and the part I can definitely confirm is that the infrastructure and production numbers do favour the Jag, especially when it comes to maintenance and repairs. Most parts on a Maserati are 3-4 times the price, and in some cases take longer to source from Italy.

    • @ashtondimovski7074
      @ashtondimovski7074 2 роки тому +1

      Yea I understand that - I came this close to picking up a Quattroporte myself - a beautiful Cognac brown leather, walnut wood trim with Navy blue carpets and accents. An absolutely beautiful car! But like you say, I balked when I saw the parts costs - really for me personally, it wasn’t even the financial cost, but it was the time it would take to ship to my home. For a lot of parts it would take 2 or 3 weeks, whereas I could have the parts for my Jaguar (which I’m still running) delivered to my door literally the next day.
      Like I said, I love them both. Jaguar offers probably the coolest “attainable” car you can ever buy, and Maserati offers probably the hottest “attainable” car you can buy. The two brands are the same coin, but two different sides.
      Keep up your content. I just discovered your account and I’m enjoying greatly. 😄
