Redman did what Redman do he took what he could get and made it work especially under the circumstances for the reason of such a lengthy time. i feel like the album is diesel fira
So one of the reasons many of our legends, unbeknownst to them, deliver albums that are extremely lackluster and they generally believe they’ve delivered a solid album is because of takes like this. I'm not attacking. Rather than these emcees having a team of rivals competing with each other, it’s just glad-handing and affability. No one is being honest with many of these legends. Not all, but some legends are delivering throw away albums, this is one of them. I’m a big fan of Redman, I think I might have some of his singles on wax. I’m from the cassette tape era. I probably wore the one leg-up style on my baggy sweatpants (See Tonights Da Night video) in high school because of Redman.😅I have a VHS tape of Redman performing the Tonights Da Night remix before if was officially released. I even have a tape of Gangstarr’s Code of Streets being used as an intro and outro for a local tri-state news organization doing a documentary on car theft in New Jersey before the single was released. See So Wassup? Episode 47 from DJ Premier. I'm not some johnny-come-lately when it comes to this. In all due respect, MWT album is wack. His flow is nothing like it was in Dare IZ a Darkside and the original Muddy Waters, not to mention Whut Thee Album? Many of those annoying freestyles over 90s beats leading up to this MWT album were mid. Let me tell you why 3.5 to 4 mics is so off the mark. This album doesn't deserve anything more than 2 mics. In 1992, Redman Whut Thee Album got (4.5 mics) Let’s go back in history and see what albums got 3.5 to 4 mics from the Source, since you are using the same grading system. 1994: Black Sheep - Non-Fiction (3.5 mics) Keith Murray - The Most Beautifullest Thing in the World (4 mics) Redman - Dare iz a Darkside (4 mics) Scarface - The Diary (4 mics) Pete Rock & CL Smooth - The Main Ingredient (4 mics) 1995: Gza/Genius - Liquid Swords (4 mics) Goodie Mob - Soul Food (4 mics) Group Home - Livin’ Proof (3.5 mics) 1996: The Fugees - The Score (4 mics) JayZ - Reasonable Doubt (4 mics) Redman - Muddy Waters (4 mics) Nothing, and I mean nothing on MWT comes close to any of these albums I mentioned and this is just what I could find on short notice. I understand that hip-hop reviews is a subjective medium, but we are giving Redman too many mics for MWT. 2.5 mics would be overly generous, hence the album deserves 2 mics.
@@TheOxIshere Yeah, I use the Source rating system mainly because I wanted to keep it traditional, and also because I couldn’t stand the out of 10 rating system that you see many younger folks use. That being said, The Source didn’t always get it right. We both know this. A lot of the albums that you mentioned should have received 4.5 to 5 mics. I’m sure if you ask alot of people today, they would tell you the aforementioned were classic albums. However, If you listened carefully to my review, I actually offer constructive criticism on this project, especially on his flow. So this review was not what is part of the problem, in helping to keep veteran artists content with dropping mid albums, or whatever you were trying to suggest. Also, I’m mindful that in 2024, and with Red’s age, we can’t realistically hold him to the same lyrical standards of his 90s work. In a perfect world, maybe we could. You think 3.5 is too high? That’s fair, but I feel 2 is too low. The reality is he shouldn’t have named this Muddy Waters Too. It should have just been a new Redman album, and folks wouldn’t have had as many gripes. Raekwons OB4CL2 was one of the rare sequels that got it right.
@@hip-hophistorybuff I actually think the fact that you use the Source rating system is great. It has staying power. One of the best hip-hop rating systems. And I agree, the 5 mics forces you to really zero in on the quality of the album. Short and succinct. I think the Source mic review numbers were more accurate than not. I mean, should we really go back to the hundreds of ratings and re-do them so future ratings are more "accurate"? I just don't think that is realistic. We also have to understand the environment in the 90s. We had so many great albums. We literally had an avalanche of great albums, so hard scrutiny was your "best friend" in evaluating hip hop albums then. I don't think we should grade hip-hop albums on a "age curve". Either it bangz or it doesn't. Some of these emcees need to hang it up. And that's okay. I'm not saying Redman has to, but some artists just age out. I need to revisit OB4CL2. I think when I listened to it I thought it was in the 3 range. In any case, as you can see I really grade extremely hard. Maybe I'd nudge Redman MWT to a 2.5, but that's all I got. 😅
To me, this album is no where near the first muddy Waters. In actuality it feels like a continuation of doc's the name. But it's a dope project. One love

@@djtimspaceking8306 I love Redman but we should strive to be objective and realize even our favorite artists can drop something that can sound dated. There are some joints on here that sound that way but it’s overall a fun listen.

1994:
Black Sheep - Non-Fiction (3.5 mics)
Keith Murray - The Most Beautifullest Thing in the World (4 mics)
Redman - Dare iz a Darkside (4 mics)
Scarface - The Diary (4 mics)
Pete Rock & CL Smooth - The Main Ingredient (4 mics)
1995:
Gza/Genius - Liquid Swords (4 mics)
Goodie Mob - Soul Food (4 mics)
Group Home - Livin’ Proof (3.5 mics)
1996:
The Fugees - The Score (4 mics)
JayZ - Reasonable Doubt (4 mics)
Redman - Muddy Waters (4 mics)
Nothing, and I mean nothing on MWT comes close to any of these albums I mentioned and this is just what I could find on short notice.
One love
