    Great reaction!
This song was the encore, so Geoff had been singing for a whole set. You really can't go wrong with any of the OG Queensryche. I would recommend "Take Hold of the Flame" live from the same show, or anything off of the album "Operation Mindcrime" (which is arguably the greatest prog metal album of all time).

One of my favorite bands ever! Actually, The singer(Geoff Tate) has a very low, dark speaking voice.
He is one of the best rock/metal singers of all time in my opinion. I saw him recently singing live and he
    still got the voice!
Scott Rockenfield on drums is, to me, one of this genre most underestimated drummers. He is an amazing
drummer and I've always held him high. The things he does composing his playing to fit the songs and
in harmony with bassplayer Eddie Jackson as a unit, is just mindblowingly good. Especially on their
    album Operation Mindcrime.

Love your reaction to Queensryche! I still feel that way about them three plus decades later!
All the guys were very young here. Just beginning. Geoff was 25, and the rest of them were 20 or so. Very tight! Best live shows I've ever seen!
Geoff's voice was very high then. On their first two albums he sang mostly in his higher range, but he is actually a baritone. In his prime he had about a 4 octave range! Beautiful voice, and total control over it!
Michael and Chris were well-known for their gorgeous dual guitar solos!
Drums are my favorite instrument, and I really liked hearing your comments about drumming. Always fascinates me even if I don't grasp the full meaning of what's being said, I get a the idea. Eddie's bass really supports Scott's drumming beautifully too.
To hear a totally different side of QR, listen to "Silent Lucidity", THEN venture into their highly acclaimed concept album: "Operation: Mindcrime". Its one long story told in flashback. A complicated and well-presented story of social unrest, manipulation, drugs, mind control, betrayal, love, loss, regret, etc. Very compelling story. Its best if you have the lyrics in front of you, and listen to it in order, all the way through. You won't be disappointed!
(NOT hair metal, btw. You're forgiven. ☺️)
Hehe, I was a Journey fan too, but when I discovered Queensryche, they ticked EVERY box for me, and they've still never been surpassed for me.
FYI, Queensryche continues to this day, but only has two of the founding members in it now, Michael, guitar and Eddie, bass. I recommend listening to the first 5 releases or so by the original lineup of QR, and THEN getting into the current QR, if you want. But for me, the original band members were absolutely musical magic together!
Hope to hear more QR reactions from you in the future!!

From a hard rock/heavy metal perspective, it must have been hard growing up in New Zealand in the 70's and 80's before the internet. Sure you got all the big label stuff, but I bet it was tough getting the newest more obscure bands, the fact that the name Queensryche was all you knew can testify to that. Watching you be stunned by Tate's singing brought me back to when I first heard it in '85 when I was 12. AWSOME!

Queensryche toured with Maiden back when they first started out. Heard rumors Dickenson was actually jealous of Geoff because of the ease he had hitting the notes. Only just found this one. Tate was insane here. He was only capable of singing like this for another 3 or 4 years before smoking and wear and tear started eating into his extreme top range. The scary thing was these guys were babies here. Tate was about 25 the other guys around 20/21. By the time of the Empire album, they were right up there with the very best bands in the world. Check out anything off Operation Mindcrime, especially the live version of Speak, it really emphasises Rockenfield's drumming.

The band I was in at the time.... we did this song for "Teen Arts" in highschool... 1988-89? To this day I couldn't tell you if the singer was ANYWHERE NEAR good. We were a disjointed, thrown together band with 2 or 3 practice sessions at most. The other guitarist and I BOTH practiced the SAME part in the harmony lead... thankfully I also practiced the OTHER part! Showtime comes and the other guitarist says "I've been practicing THIS part", I said "well so have I" (keeping in mind there's NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE in EITHER LEAD riff).... HE said he'd ONLY practiced ONE RIFF... "OK, NO WORRIES, I practiced the OTHER riff as well"... so we went on stage (IN HIGHSCHOOL) as planned.
It started good, then, like a BAD 1980's movie, LITERALLY, someone from ANOTHER BAND started F'N with our MIXER!!! Bumped UP some PA volumes, and CRASHED others!!! EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE AUDIENCE!!! SAW HIM DOING IT!!! HIS band placed behind us, that was good enough for me!! LOL
At least I played onstage. Later on, I interviewed and took pics on the tour bus of Testament, Overkill, Nuclear Assault, Slayer, King Diamond. Had an awesome chat with Sebastian Bach at the bar in L'Amour for a good 30 min or so, until he was called on-stage to replace King Diamond that night. King had country entry issues again, but the rest of the band was there.
Sebastian, on his way to the stage, tossed a $20 on the bar and said "get another on me". Even BEFORE that, COOLEST dude ever! And then TO DO THAT!!? SUPERCOOL!!!
Tate, Bach, SUPER vocal range for both of them. Total control at the high levels where most, IF they can GET to the high levels, its' an uncontrollable scream. THOSE two guys can walk it ANY WHERE THEY WANT!

Queensrÿche is usually that band you pull out when you want insane vocals from the era. Metal has some of the crazies singing after all (distorted guitars eats up so much of the sonic space).
But the rest of the band were absolutely on point back then. Especially DeGarmo.

Check out some videos about Scott's snare tone on the album Empire. That snare tone is legendary and apparently people have tried over the years to recreate it and haven't been successful. I think even the original producer and/or engineer couldn't remember exactly how they did it, but they were unsuccessful at reproducing it. The album as a whole is great, but that snare sound brings a lot of strength to the over all sound of the album. If it were to be remixed with a different snare sound, that album would suffer greatly.

This is the original band before the break up. They were brilliant musicians and writers. Geoff
    Tate was an incredible vocalist.

I did security for these guys back in the day.. Instantly enjoyed hanging with Michael Wilton, Eddie and Scott good dudes. I highly recommend you react to these guys doing "Take Hold of the Flame" from the same show. Then dive into stuff from Operation Mindcrime and Empire.

@@purplekat5864 It was tough.. Geoff was a real douche everyone. But his wife was the tour mgr so nothing anyone could do about it. The guys in the band I remember would go anywhere, where Geoff wasn't, so when they eventually fired him, I was just surprised it took so long, cause this was back in 01'. Kelly had replaced Chris on guitar. Kelly was pretty laid back and cool too. MIchael was my favorite to sit and chat with. Real down to earth guy.

@@ryant3600 I've met the guys several times, but obviously not on your level. Mine were in meet & greet situations, and then at a fan club event where there was a bit more interaction. They all seemed really nice. Michaels wife ( this was 1998 I believe) was super nice and helped clear the way to each of the guys so I could have a big collage thing I had made signed. Since each of the guys were pretty tightly surrounded by other fans, I was having a hard time getting through. She was just very helpful and gracious. I'm sad to hear about Geoff though. 😔 Susan seemed to be very involved with the running of the band business. I wouldn't be surprised if resentments, misunderstandings, and hurt feelings built up over time and eventually things fall apart. Just speculation though. The band, especially Chris, has always been pretty private about whatever happened behind the scenes. And I don't blame them. I've heard a couple things, but I would want to keep those personal things private too. I wouldn't want to endure endless public discussions about my inter-personal relationships either.
Sigh, oh well. The music stands regardless! The songs will never diminish!

To be clear. The term "Hair Metal" was meant as an insult. A "relegation," if you will. It was to highlight the only "positive" aspect of a (particular) band. As in, "Oh, them? They're hair metal." Bands such as: Poison. Slaughter. Bulletboys. Pretty Boy Floyd. Would fit this category. Just to name a few.

Queensryche was often compared to Iron Maiden in the early days, but they are considered one of the founding fathers of prog metal (along with Dream Theater).

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 9 місяців тому

      Actually . . .
Along with Queensrÿche; _"Very often fans and critic credit Dream Theater for creating a whole new genre of progressive metal music in the late '90s/early '90s, But the truth is Fates Warning were doing it years before us."_
      - *Mike Portnoy* / taken from liner notes of the 2005 expanded edition of the Awaken the Guardian album.
There were others before Dream Theater as well (do a search for):
"mavearworx: Witnessing the Birth of Progressive Metal - Part 1 of 2"
I hope you enjOy and discover many other bands :).

I saw them on this tour, opening for Kiss. I saw them again in 91 on their Empire tour. The night before the 91 show, I bumped into Scott Rockenfield at a hotel bar. My friends and Introduced ourselves, and actually had a beer with him. He was such a cool guy, down to earth and we just shot the sh*t for about an hour or so. I love this band, especially their first 4 albums.

If you’re impressed by them on this first album (and this live is absolutely incredible for sure) then you have to check out anything from the next three albums. Everything is insane, and gets better and better, and I would say the drumming is probably the best on the album “Empire”. They move away from the Maiden/Priest heaviness into a totally unique Progressive style all their own. But, that dude could sing like that for decades. He still does very well live, even 40 years later. Shame on you for not knowing any Queensrÿche. Yeah, you’ll love their dual guitars on everything. Until De Garmo left.
