  • Highgate Cemetery and Pub Walk - London Walking Tour, including ghost stories, train robbers and other quirky stories.
Starting at Swains Lane called thus because of Pig herders from the 1300s driving swine down to Smithfields.
Sightings of the Highgate Cemetery Vampire were common in Swains Lane which is also a cycling mecca because of one of the steepest gradients in London.
The Beatles also had a famous photo taken here.
Highgate Cemetery - opened in 1839 (one of 7 cemeteries Parliament decided on) is home to Michal Faraday, Karl Marx, George Michael and Malcolm McLaren.
In the 1960s reports of blood drained animals and spectral sightings led to claims of a Highgate vampire.
Pond Square also has ghost stories, but one about a chicken! It is also where Sir Francis Bacon died and where many famous people lived like George Michael, Kate Moss, Terry Gilliam and Ray Davies all very nearby.
The Flask pub is a lovely inn. Hampstead was popular for its wells and you could buy flasks here back in the old days.
Dick Turpin, the highwayman, hid here when fleeing from the law and Hogarth drank here. So did Byron, Shelley, Keats and Coleridge who lived over the road. There is also a ghost of a Spanish Barmaid which haunts The Flask.
Other pubs include The Prince of Wales, Highgate Village, which has the hardest pub quiz in London!
Highgate School was founded in 1565 and in the chapel churchyard is buried Peter Heyward, one of the Bounty Mutineers.
The Gatehouse pub dates back to the 14th Century.
The Bishop of London owned the park and the name Highgate comes from the gates which provided access to the park that stretched down to The Spaniards Inn. The gate house was the toll gate and is the earliest recorded building in Highgate. There’s a boundary marker here too.
The Wrestlers is the oldest pub in Highgate still doing business.
Drunk people came to settle differences and fight. They liked high points for some reason, perhaps because places like Highgate had so many pubs. 16 pubs in total in Highgate which started up because they were on the sheep herders trail to London and people would stop to take a rest at the highest point. Maybe for the view!
The Wrestlers still have the Swearing on horns ceremony which even Lord Byron was famous for doing.
"You must not eat brown bread while you can get white, except you like the brown the best. You must not drink small beer while you can get strong, except you like the small the best. You must not kiss the maid while you can kiss the mistress, except you like the maid the best, but sooner than lose a good chance you may kiss them both."
You would then become a freeman of Highgate.

I went to Highgate School, too, and the Gatehouse pub had the reputation of being where all the masters went to recuperate from teaching serried ranks of adolescent boys! (Before anyone asks, yes, Highgate was all-male when I was there). Very many thanks for this trip down Memory Lane!

Have you seen Dick Whittingtons black cat remains they found in the walls of the pub at Archway? Also i was brought up with the story of the witch that was dislodged from her abode at Alexandra palace and was always scared of that story, plus they always made us go on cross country runs through creepy queens woods at highgate wood school back in the 70s. I look forward to more of your videos soon x

Great stuff. I love getting to learn such interesting facets of the culture of London that many of the locals probably don't even know. I heard that Twickenham is now part of London. (Sorry about the spelling--I have a degree in English Lit. not spelling) Twickenham is where Peter Sallis was born. I would love to learn more about that area.
Also, one of your famous countrymen is a friend and neighbor out here in Washington State, USA, Danbert Nobacon from Chumbawamba.

I grew up on Hillcrest estate, which was opposite High point. Hillcrest, was one of the very few council estates in Highgate. All the places you mentioned is a throw back for me, when I was a kid riding my bike, and doing my paper rounds to all the rich peoples house. The gate house pub is supposedly haunted too. When I was about 14, me and a mate plucked up the courage to go into The Wrestlers pub, which was right next to Hillcrest estate, I innocently asked for a pint of lager, and just for one second, he was about to do it, then looked back and said, have you got any ID? I promptly left feeling embarrassed. Lots of memories growing up around there. I love your videos, we now live in Islington, so loved that one too. And have subscribed.

This is one of the best films you've made Mr Joolz, even if it does make me a bit sad because of the things it reminds me of. If I ever earn a penny again I will subscribe to your Patreon, you make better films than you know and I am surprised you are not on a tv channel somewhere.

I visited Highgate today and had the task of walking down, and then back up again, with an injured foot, Swains Lane. Not something to brag about.

It's certainly a steep hill that! You should have just sat tight in the flask and awaited reinforcements!

Tomb of Marx (Karl, for friends) his body does not lie in this monument, but in a discreet tomb next to his wife, some distance away.

Thanks. And I don't think he lived in Highgate as my friend said.that might have been an error.

Rab Feenie pretty sure in 2019 many of Marx’s theories prove correct honey.

@Rab Feenie It kinda is. Research and statistical data has shown that those from disadvantaged or lower socioeconomic backgrounds are generally those with a higher level of patriotism and/or faith.

That makes sense, as his monument and the ground around it is probably soaked in urine.

You pay ten pounds to get in and get a booklet , they mark the map in the booklet with the grave : it’s so easy to find as it’s the best kept one there

Loved watching this, lived here for 5 years. You filmed the wall of my old house I think! Regularly came last at the POW quiz. You can see snippets of Highgate in my horror short videophone on my channel. Your stuff is brilliant great work Julian!

Joolz, in your class photo, why do you look like staff. . . most of the other boys have on red piped blazers but you (and staff) have on a nice looking day suit? Loved this installment BTW, thanks for the very useful information and history.
