We visit the legendary cue-maker John Parris and hear his wonderful stories. Then we go to The Horniman Museum and see the fantastic taxidermy and other items in the collection.
There are also locations connected to Aha and Ernest Shackleton.
Forest Hill is, understandably, hilly!! Nevertheless it is one of my favourite walks and I was suitably impressed!

The book arrived today!! Yay!!
I received the book today! Splendid Tallyhoe Pippip or whatever. Looks good, feels nice. Gonna start reading this evening. The I probably need to book a trip to London.
Got the book today in Kentucky! Marvelous! Looking forward to our next London visit with this book as our guide.
The box attached to the postbox is a pouch box. Typically when they are used a van places, and locks, a pouch of letters inside. When the delivery postman reaches this point his current pouch is exhausted, and he opens the box to pick up the next pouch of deliverables. This way a postman can ensure that he is never overloaded (16kg max.), and can walk along his 'walk' (round) collecting pouches on the way.
6:32 What a sweet cat! That paw action was adorable! 🐱 🐈
Lots of UA-camrs show what it is like to visit London but you show what it is like to live in London. Good on you mate!
Don't leave Simon! You and Joolz are great together, and the witty banter you two share is part of makes Joolz Guides so fun!
Don't leave us Simon! Joolzy is washed up without you.
As a north Londoner, born and bred, the south east of London has always been a bit of a mystery. So thanks for the enlightenment.
At last Forest Hill, where I spent most of my childhood after being brought to London by my parents, from New Zealand! So many memories, so much I never knew, even though I lived there. When did the billiard cue factory open? Was it there in the 1960s? I used to catch the bus to school every morning at the bus stop outside the ABC Capitol, and ride past the Hornimans, which is a lovely museum, along to East Dulwich. Perhaps you could ‘do’ Dulwich sometime soon.
I’m back in New Zealand now and have been for quite a few years, but I still feel like a Forest Hill kid as much as a Kiwi. Your walks around London tickle my sense of nostalgia something marvellous. They always fill me with delight.
I lived there through the 50s, starting at a time when there were occasional trains on the Crystal Palace line (and trams -- replaced by trolleybuses)(my grandad took me on a ride on the tram before they were withdrawn). When the line closed the trackbed by Horniman Park became a linear rose garden (its a 'nature walk' now). The Croydon canal was to the west of the rail line, it effectively ran through the back gardens of the houses on the west side of Devonshire Road (we lived at #73) -- the topology of our and neighboring gardens reflected this.
Its an interesting part of London. There's a lot more there but much has changed in 60+ years.
The greyhound was rebuilt BUT only because it was, as a listed building, illegally demolished (apart from the back wall) and Lewisham council forced them to rebuild. It DOES include the listed elements including original tiles. Also behind it on the back side a wall of tiles that comprise of local people’s friends and families.
Thanks, I never thought I'd have cause to say "well done" to Lewisham Council!
Would love to buy a book.
Spot on, a nice pub. Especially outside in the summer, watching the world go by with a pint
It was a local mp,who’s family member run a construction company was awarded the contract…they were taken to court for removing heritage (stained glass windows, and a total disregard of heritage values)
I think the fine was ridiculous what they were charged, bearing in mind that the pub lay derelict for years….
🐈What a wonderful cat that slipped thru the fence on cue. How fabulous. Viva los Gatos. Thanks guys!! 🐾🐾
🎉Horniman House & Garden is a really good place to visit 🎉
My part of London. I once did a two-week college project at The Horniman Museum and had some of my artwork displayed there for a time. The actor Timothy Spall is a local resident and he donated money to the museum to help save it around 20 years ago. It has always been my favourite museum.
Thanks for coming to Sydenham 👍
When you were up at Kirkdale you should have popped down Halifax street. That is a lovely street - 1700 early 1800 cottages with wooden sides and a bit further there is wells park which is worth a visit.
Also If you had gone up Spring Hill and Peak Hill you would have found a few stink pipes and older postboxes and you can hear / see / smell the river through a grate near to the German bridge
Oops...yes, got a shot of Welles Park but I guess I missed those cottages....
Exactly! I lived on Wells Park Road The Swimmer Duncan Goodhew lived or had a property there I believe...
My parent's families both lived in Westwood Park, Forest Hill and I have happy memories of visiting my maternal grandparents at no.132 in the 1960s. Visits to Hornimans Museum were always wonderful. My parents watched the Crystal Palace burn down on Sydenham Hill in 1936; they said it was a terribly sad sight and the heat was intense. They picked up a piece of melted glass as a souvenir the following morning, which we still have.
This morning, for no apparent reason, I was attracted to an article in The Guardian (Oz edition) about a small enterprise in S E London that makes snooker cues. A few hours later, the man himself crops up on your history walk! Quite a remarkable coincidence. (Or is it?)
Interesting to see the Shackleton house. Cheers Joolz and also Simon please don't go!
Glad you mentioned Camille Pissarro. I've got a book of his London paintings.Great to see a post-impressionist whose subject was the London suburbs.
You are so lucky, to be favoured by an orange cat!🐈 And believe it or not the feature is interesting.
Happy Easter Joolz, friends and family. For some reason that whole area depresses me down to the marrowbone (although not as much as Croydon), but you definitely proved that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That ginger cat helped too, what a character!
Thanks. Happy Easter. I actually rather liked it funnily enough!
I agree unfortunately I live in Croydon 😮but even Croydon has some interesting stuff!
I was disappointed that he seemed 2 b avoiding stroking or picking up this beautiful cat!
That cats a star!
Simon, please stay, you are an integral part of whole Jules guide
My home ❤, although I moved 2 years ago. Remember Cobbs corner as the department store, the old Sainsburys used to be a wet fish shop in the 70's & the estate agent was a launderette. Lovely to have you this side of the river. Hope you can do some more, very interesting to find out some history.
Hi Joolz I was born in Forest Hill in 1950 the youngest son of four boys so grew up in and around SE23. I have so many happy memories of the area, The station at Forest Hill was originally built as a water pumping station for the canal, the original building was knocked down back in the sixties, the subway under the railway was used as a bomb shelter during WW2 and was hit by a V bomb. My father often told me of the day in 1936 when he saw the orange glow in the sky when the Crystal Palace burnt down from the house in Forest Hill.
Would love to see this continued down to Ladywell, Brockley and Lewisham in the near future!
And to catford/ Rushey green.
great video ...I grew up in Upper Sydenham/Kirkdale ...and actually as a kid, that whole junction area was referred to as 'Cobbs Corner'
Simon is definitely a true artist.
Nice to see you in south London joolz come back and do a tour around Penge and Beckenham lots of history. The watermans, Rolling Stones, Bowie, lots of Vicky posts boxes and stink pipes.
Simon, please don't leave. We love you! And London is the most amazing city!
I’m going through a divorce and me and my wife used to watch this show you together it breaks my heart to watch it but he’s also still very confident. Keep up the good work joolz
Nice to see Joolz on the correct side of the river. 😉
One day we’ll get a Woolwich Arsenal tour. 🥲🥹 So much history there.
Hey Joolz! Coming to Londres in July. Will buy the book and attempt to collect points for gargoyles, grotesques, stink pipes, and post boxes.
My neighbourhood! Fab to see it featured! I'm on Crystal Palace border, so its a double-dip!
Hi Joolz, born and raised in Sydenham…..great video again……just a point of interest about the Croydon canal. If you go to the other side of Crystal Palace park, there is a small park called Betts Park where you can see the remaining part of the canal in the park, about 200 yds long….and a little further up the road you have South Norwood Pa re w high has a boating lake in it, well the lake used to be used to park the barges in overnight.
Always love a Joolz guides day! Don't leave Simon, we love you too!
So happy to see my old neck of the woods. Was in the weekend club in Hornimans museum as a kid loved seeing it again.
Hands down, one of my favorite Joolz Guides ever. I love Forest Hill. Thank you!
I remember playing darts with A-ha in the Woodman pub opposite the recording studios. Nice lads, although I though that Morton was too pretty for his own good.
Nice to see you still producing films walk of lond hope we don’t have to wait a mont for your next on
Always love a new video from Joolz and the lovely vocals of your sister and the brilliant comic stylizings of Simon.. please keep them coming.
Where I grew up...Showed quite a few roads that I lived on...Looks very different now, havent been there in a good few years...Great vid!
This channel should be marked as a world heritage site.
Great to see, I was born just the otherside of Forest Hill Station (Hindsley's Place), though my Birth Certificate says, Sydenham, KENT! (The Registration District in the 1940s) and remember when it was a Cinema not a pub ( and the woods behind it). Much that was new to me and even more that was familiar. We were moved to Blackheath under the Slum Clearance act when I was eight in 1955, we didn't have electricity just gas and no bathroom with an outside toilet! Thougrougly interesting miander!
The red box on the side of the pillar post box was installed for the postie to have part of their delivery dropped ahead of their route, so I was told about 20 years ago.
The Trees are London Plane which apparently are a hybrid of American plane and oriental plane.
They are good for cleaning pollution out of the air. It sticks to the bark which falls off the tree.
One of my favourite songs is A-ha's Summer moved on. Morten Harket still has the record since 2000 for holding a note, 20.2 seconds. The longest in a top 40 pop song.
More than Lovely day?
My neck of the woods!
Horniman and the gardens are wonderful, great cafe, lockers, buggy parks, lifts, Aquarium, excellent
Really enjoying your "German U-boat Captain in bowler" look
Another great walk Joolz - looking forward to my book! :) The box on the side of the postbox is for the postman to swap over his bag when delivering. There are many about, not all are attached to postboxes though and the modern ones are really nondescript grey boxes with 'Royal Mail' stamped on them in small lettering. Keep up the good work! :D
My local area, well Crystal Palace more so Thanks. Honor Oak btw 😂
The version of 'Take On Me' that we all know was recorded at Pete Townshend's studio in Twickenham. It was called Eel Pie Studios.
I was born in Syd'num a long time ago, in Southend Lane, around the back of the old gasworks. I still remember the interior of Cobbs department store. By some fluke I managed to attend both Hazletine Rd. and Adamsril Rd. primary schools before my family moved to Crawley New Town. I've only been back a couple of times in nearly seventy years but still easily find my way about the place ❤
Splendid
Grew up on Peckham Park road and the Surrey canal ran behind our flats. There was even a saw mill still in operation off of the canal. These videos make me nostalgic and sad to see what has happened to London since I grew up. Where tourists were given directions by the pubs located on the corner.
So interesting and informative as ever. I love it when you visit the real crafts people/ specialists in their field, it's the way things should be, instead of all this mass produced rubbish we get . The history in London is fascinating. Thanks to you and Simon for another great video.
This program is packed with so many interesting features, Joolz. I reckon that you performed that A-ha singing very good. Some nice old architecture of buildings and a very friendly cat that took to you as you appeared on the scene. The snooker cue 'factory' was of interest, very much indeed. Many thanks to you for this brilliant video.
The cat absolutely stole the show. Please, we must have more on the cat. Did it come out of the Karl Marx daughter's house?
A follow-up would be very popular I'm sure. Love your work and your wit- BOTH of you!! Sincere thank you from Ganjarado, USA
Greetings from Manglerud, the area where Paul and Magne grew up in Oslo ❤️Love your videos so much!
What a gorgeous little ginger cat who came to say hello! Thank you for another very interesting tour round a rather upmarket part of London, I love the blue plaques that you spot as you go by, (not sure about the singing, was never an AHA fan). PS I have your book....
Great video yey again the red box on the side of the pillar box is a storage box for the postman's second delivery pouch to save him carrying to much weight about
I just love watching these videos with a nice cup of tea and rich tea biscuits. 👍😊🇮🇪🇬🇧
What's better than Joolz Guides? I have watched each episode many times............look forward to the next one...........and will be purchasing the book!
Loving the longer video ❤❤
Fun fact anyone else remember how some girls from Sydenham school Dartmouth Road, would be invited to Rolf Harris’s home to have an art lesson !!….lol
And now I want to visit the south of London, what have you done!!!
Brilliant video - but Simon, please don’t go! 😥I love the house price segment - fascinating for me as a resident in Spain
I love the elderly people sign. Old details are nice to see . Love these videos .
I watched this video Saturday 4/29, and yesterday and today The group A-Ha videos are all over You Tube. Interesting timing.
Happy Easter everyone.
Fecking love you man xx keep being you. Just love your projects so much x
Hi I went to the Secondary modern school ,and was in Shakleton house in the sixties .what a school it was 👍😁
Another great video Joolz love watching all of them , please keep them coming, all the best, LB.👍🏼👍🏼
Nice video and lovely a-ha singing, Joolz! Greetings from Norway.
I ❤️ the black gloves. They make you look like Dr Strangelove. 👍
Hooray! Started the book as soon as it hit my Kindle and its wonderful so far! Looking forward to making it to London someday so I can see its glory in person!
What a nice fella John Parris is , another great video , keep rockin man !
26:45 Haaa I was hoping you'd mention 'The soft rains of April'. It's my favourite song of the album. ^___^
Another lovely video and slice of life. I so enjoy seeing the various neighborhoods around London 🤗
Excellent as always. I must admit i have a sneaking regard for how you 'promote' your book. So English and apologetic. Its a brilliant book! Be Californian for a bit. xx
Still can't believe I bumped into Joolz in Hampstead on Friday! I've always loved listening to his guides and the way he brings us around the city is so original and true to Joolz! He was so sweet and humble and even conceded to taking a picture with me! What a dream come true, a true celebrity in his own right. ❤
Looking dapper there Dr. J. You and I have the same vocal range. I often sing a few lines in front of my wife and then look at her and say..."Amazing! Never had one singing lesson."
That house in Honour Oak Road (Ashberry Cottage) was the home of King William IV’s mistress, the Irish actress Mrs. Dorothy Jordan. They had 10 illegitimate kids together allegedly. You zoomed in on the blue plaque and didn’t mention it?!?!? 😁
I think its now owned by the artist Pat Reay. Or that could be the one next door.
I haven't even watched this yet, but I've liked it and I know KNOW I'll like it. Nuff said, get on with it Joolz.
Great video I thought you might’ve mentioned Spike Milligan who once lived in Honor Oak
Gargoyle is derived form the French the verb "gargouiller" which translates into English as "to gurgle" or, in relation to noises from the stomach, "to rumble".
Similarly, the word "Lampoon" is thought to derive from the plural imperative verb "guzzle". Which goes to show that people are funnier after a pint.
Lots of interesting stuff in South London!
Hi just to inform you because I like your walks in London I have bought 3 of your books Joel's Guides London History walks as gifts for my family on Amazon
Great video, as a local I very much approve! Rather suprised of no mention of Dietrich von Hofer, one of Forest Hill's most famous and fascinating residents.....
My stomping grounds in the 1950s… visited Horniman museum in summer times … lived in Forest Hill
95 Beadnell Road 10 years.
Great to see some of the places I knew when I lived nearby. I am still waiting for you to do a tour of Camberwell though😊
Happy Easter Joolz, thanks for all the lovely vlogs and interesting tidbits. Take care and be well.
Pre ordered 2 books, one for my mother and one for myself. Looking forward to getting into it. Thanks again Joolz. From AZ usa
Another great video of a part of London I knew nothing about. Keep up the excellent work.
Fantastic episode. Really interesting. We have a Forest Hill not far from where I live in Melbourne. Always love your videos. Coming to London in July and will purchase your book then. x
Thank you for another fantastic video, Joolz!!!
Nice one. Liked the 2 longer, in depth pieces you did, coupled with you giving us lots of interesting information.
Joolz, still waiting on my book, ya bastard! ;) All good brother, love every bit of your content, keep up as usual!!!
I miss London.
Hi! The box on the side of the Post Box is to put a second bag full of post to be picked up after you’ve finished your first bag. Very briefly I was a temp Postie. I’m also dyslexic, so that worked out as about as well as you might expect! Great video!
Just watched and enjoyed, as a big aha fan appreciated all the info, and the singing.....maybe not quite hitting the notes?? 🤣 Book on order, keep up the good work. Going any further South? Streatham/Norbury.......
Thank you for the upload, joolz 👍
I went to school in Forest hill. Who remembered sydenham childrens hospital
