I should like to thank my Choirmaster Mr Benton for instilling in me a lifelong love of choral music. He was a hard man to please as he expected excellence but although he was almost tyrannical every single one of us strove to give him what he asked. We all loved the old tartar and when he died, quite suddenly we were heartbroken I have never forgotten this wonderful old man who found my voice and taught me how to use it. Christmas carols always bring him into my mind, he always made it a special time for us. So thanks, Mr Benton, from a grateful former chorister.
I sang this wonderful carol back in the 1960's in my school choir , and I am so grateful to the legendary Russell Burgess at Wandsworth School for taking me into the wonderful world of superb music .
I too sang this beautiful carol in 1980 (tenor) in the Johannesburg City Hall accompanied by a full orchestra under the amazing and renowned choir master Richard Cock, what an honour and priveledge that was I will never forget
I first encountered this lovely piece when watching the movie “ The Black Narcissus “ many years ago. It was used most artfully in one of the scenes as the Mother Superior ( Deborah Kerr) is recalling a distant Christmas memory and a lost love.
This carol is simple and as such is difficult to sing really well, like folk or traditional song. The melody is the important thing and these boys are so good .It is a little gem set in gold by the lovely organ part.

I first heard this song in the 1947 film Black Narcissus. Why, oh why, isn't it considered a standard like Silent Night or Joy to the World?
Gorgeous. The essence of Christmas.
This carol is just so preciously beautiful, and to sing it in a choir is even more beautiful and precious
Beautiful...........thank you for posting.
Beautifully sung.

The lyrics are 15th century Middle English, possibly older. A handwritten copy was found in Ann Boleyn's psalter.
@@sidneyfrederickson3941 wow that is so lovely and amazing to know, the composer was a genius
Phenomenal piece. thanks.
Wonderful. I much prefer Richard Terry's arrangement to Gustav Holst's.
