Jesus Christ the Apple Tree is pure musical beauty. Words cannot describe how perfect it is.
I have always liked this beautiful item of music which has become very popular at Christmas tide. As always, beautiful singing!
I only have to think of this piece to bring a lump to my throat - unbearably beautiful in its simplicity. Once wrote to El;izabeth Poston to tell her so, but she never replied ...
I've always loved this. Partial chant/hymn. Pure beautiful song
Christmas is long over and I still can't stop listening to this. Thank you spiritdei. It's timeless indeed.
You're welcome Horsehockey105, every time I hear it, it is like the first time!
I wonder if you could please place the lyrics to each of these amazing carrols in the description like you did the first one? It would be so helpful. Thank you so very much.@@spiritdei

Jesus Christ the Apple Tree:
It makes me feel just like I'm in heaven. The first virse sung only by soprano is so moving, so are the rest of the harmonies by tenors and bases. The slight ritenuto made at the end of each verse also gives a notable touch of lightness. It is also a credit to Elizabeth Poston because she is one of the few good classical music composers.
In the bleak mid Winter:
The organ accompaniment gives a touch of lightness and adds to the calm and angelic athmosphere created. The tenor solo is lovely but it could have a bit less vibrato and more dynamics and phrasing.
I actually am finding the choral treatment of Bleak Winter renders it almost unrecognizable. I presume that the Apple Tree, which I've never heard before, is equally slushy. ooof.
Harold Darke came to Durham to do an organ recital just weeks before he died. I will never forget it. Fabulous musician and this, this here, is legacy. He did a lot more but this becomes part of you.
Stunningly beautiful!
they always sing so nicely. fantastic as always!
Even more enjoyable now that I have been reading up on composer Elizabeth Poston, friend of E.M. Forster, occupant of Rooksnest (Howards End) and champion of Forster Country and its preservation. A remarkable woman, little remembered now save for this carol - just a small part of a great oeuvre - and her founding role in the Friends of Forster Country.
Thankyou for putting this up . I first heard jesus christ the apple tree on a album by aled jones when he was still a choir boy so that will tell you how long ago.
To say that I "like" this is an understatement. I sang it about 22 years ago in my college chorale. I had never heard it before. The hauntingly gentle melody and lyrics have clung to me ever since. I'm so pleased to have found this performance of it. Thank you!
Such a soulful piece ❤🙏✨
It dont get any better than this
Musical perfection: Spirit for the soul!
beautiful rendition

I wonder where I find songs with this tenor solo
The sopranos could work on hitting that top note, but still very beautiful.
I believe this is a medieval carol. Indeed, that era wove divinity into metaphor. Kings is one of the best weavers in history.
believable
I will have this sung at the end of my funeral.
