The late Dr. Erik Routley, much published writer on hymnody, wrote "Sleep, Holy Babe…used to be more popular than it is now or than it deserved to be at any time. Here we finally drop over the edge. What connection can be traced between the true carol and this dreadful composition?" How wrong could he be!
