I just changed my 2006 Durango wheel. Everything went smoothly. To remove the air bag connectors I used needle nose pliers to gently squeeze the tabs and lift off the connectors. Works perfectly. I found that the steering wheel gently rocked off the spline and didn't have to resort to the wheel puller that I bought. I guess that's one tool going back. This video was perfect for understanding the process.
You never know when you might need some of this info.....so keep watching so that you know where to come when it happens. Thanks again for watching and make sure to subscribe
MotorCity Mechanic you have a new sub sir. This project was super easy but I was scared of the air bag. Your vid showed how to safely and easily get this job done. Sub my channel too please. Hopefully I can learn you something :)
Greatly appreciate. I know what you mean.....I know of some great techs/mentors that have passed over the years that knew 10x the stuff that I know. Sharing the info is the only way to keep it going....thats the main reason I make these videos.
Great tutorial. How would I go about taking the chrome badge off the front of the steering wheel cover? Are there just more clips to detach the airbag assembly from the cover?
I didnt know that the emblem was avail seperately. I only knew of it coming with the airbag cover which also has the horn pad. the airbag can be removed seperately from the cover by unhooking the cover from the airbag. it takes times but is possible. The airbag has metal fingers and the cover has slots cut into it that the fingers go thru.
Great video, excellent lighting, steady camera, easy to follow instructions and reasons why. Question: I've just replaced my R & P on my 2005 Grand Caravan. The steering wheel was tied down in the straight/level position. After I forcefully attached the steering intermediate coupler to the rack gear and attached the outer tie rods to the wheel hub assembly and did all the fluid checks etc I took the van for a test drive. The steering wheel doesn't turn as far to the left and turn too far to the right. The intermediate coupler is seriously stuck onto the rack and I really don't want to have to spend 2 hours trying to figure out how to get the two pieces apart. I would appreciate your ideas, professions or creative. Thanks again. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to more tutorials. Gerry / British Columbia / Canada
Thanks Gerry for the cool feedback. It sounds like you may not have centered the steering rack before installing. I always mark where the old on is.....and then turn the input shaft until it stops and I make note of the number of times it turned until it stopped. then I max the new one out in the same direction and then back it off the same number of times until it ends in the same location as the original. There are cases where the rack could be the issue and wasnt correctly put back together when rebuilt at the manufacture. At this point the steering coupler will need to be removed from the rack. It should have just slid down onto the rack without much effort....it is made to only go on one way (keyed/splined)....if it was hard to get on then it may not have been lined up correctly and was forced into a spot instead of where it was suppose to go.
No tool that I know of.....if the coupler has a split down it then you can try wedging a chisel or something to help open up the coupler so that it can be removed easier.
Thanks for the video! Question, I have an 07 Dodge 2500. I have a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel. Where should I look in trouble shooting that? Thanks in advance!
So it sounds like there's no way to re clock,or "jump" one or two splines to bring the steering wheel back to center after a front end alignment? When I took the truck for alignment after a tie rod replacement the wheel was about 11° off to the left. After the alignment it's about 11° off to the right...😆 Can this be adjusted by removing the steering wheel and jumping one spline to the left? Thanks in advance for any information or advice.
Thanks for taking the time to both comment and for watching the video. I currently don't have a video yet on the clockspring in this truck. I will try to keep it in mind incase another vehicle comes in for a clockspring. Make sure to subscribe so that you get notified when new videos come out as well as any important news I may have. Hi, I have an 03 dodge 1500. My clock spring is bad. I know its an easy fix. I am just a wee bit nervous of the scary air bag. Is there ANY potential of accidental discharge if the battery has been disconnected for well over 30Min?
Great video, I have one question, Dodge Nitro RT..on the steering wheel 3 and 9 position is the info control center buttons, I have been unable to replace the polished metal area the buttons fit into...no and mean no Dodge dealer can find that part number
+mexymac Afternoon, depends on the year model. Here is a link to a video I made where you don't have to remove the steering wheel. ua-cam.com/video/UZEtRwt2BRw/v-deo.html Make sure to subscribe and also check out my other videos. Thanks
Thanks for subscribing! I will keep it in mind. I have to have a similar repair vibe in first before I can. I will keep an eye out and see what I can. Thanks again for following the channel
I just bought a 2003 dodge ram 1500. It was wrecked in the front. It has a lot of play in the steering which doesn't seem to transfer from the steering wheel to the steering column. Any ideas on what it may be? Thanks.
I dont see why not. I recommend calling your local Dodge dealer and have them look up both year models to see if the part number is the same. Being the same body style I feel it will work but best to be sure. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe. Enjoy the weekend.
I have a truck with a person that was pulling the steering wheel to get in the truck now it rattles back and fourth. Does anyone know if I can just tighten it up or adjust it or do I have to replace?
Its hard to say. Sounds like it will need to be taken apart to see hat me causing the play. On the older trucks you can do some repairs. Been awhile sense I have seen this issue so I cant remember exactly what years....there was a bulletin actually that covered a similar issue. Whats the year of the truck?
Hi. I'd like to replace the stock steering wheel with one that has no cruise control or other connections, maybe a horn at most. Is it possible to use the replacement steering wheel solely for manual operation, or will I likely encounter short circuit or other electronic problems?
Hey there Stephan. No....thank you for taking the time to comment sand fur watching. Hope the video helped. Make sure to subscribe and help spread the word by sharing these videos with others.
Morning Lindsey. I dont know for sure how things will work. I am not sure what the laws are about disabling the airbags or in this case removing it. Physically I would think that the swap should go okay as long as its made for that steering column shaft and the splines match up. I personally havent done that swap so I can say 100% for sure in the end

I figured. Is there a tool or technique to remove a VERY stuck intermediate coupler from the rack splines?
Thanks.

Anything special for 2003 Ram with radio controls?

Do you have to remove steering wheel to be able to remove the turn signal switch on this same model? Thx for the video!

Sorry about that, its one of my older videos when I had to film at work. Glad that things have changed and my quality has evolved.
Very helpful, thanks.

Can i put an 04 steering wheelon my 2003? Is do the splines and plugs line up?
As far as I know you should be able to. There were no changes between those years.
can i swap steering wheel with a nrg racing steering wheel and delete cruise and airbags? 99 ram 1500?

Horn problem
My horn only works sometimes
Turn the FUCKING MUSIC OFF
Its the joys of working in a shop with 8 other people and someone always playing something. Main reason why I film at home now.
