I have a 2016 Ram 1500. I got the key fob off Amazon, the old without the screw in the back. I used a pair of little clippers and cut the new one to match up with the original one. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM! THANKS!!! Saved me so much money!!!! My Man!
Did similar with ours a few months ago. Only, the replacement remote we got had all the little discs taped to the circuit board with an adhesive overlay. So, we thought that was a good idea and we opened up the old remotes, found all the little discs, cleaned them and the circuit board, then carefully placed them onto the metal contacts of the circuit board and covered it all with a bit of packing tape. Then just trimmed the packing tape along the edges of the circuit board and put it all back together. The tape holds to hold the little discs in place so they won't come loose and start moving again. We used the rubber button insert and shell of the replacement remotes with our newly taped/repaired original circuit board just so they looked new again.
You saved me so much money today! I only have one key fob for my van, and it quit working today! The locksmith would only replace my fob if I had a working one and I couldn't afford one from the dealer. Anyways, I opened my fob up, cleaned it out (looked like it had been dropped in motor oil...might need to have a talk with my mechanic!), and super glued the metal discs back into place.... my key fob is working good as new!! Next payday I'm getting a backup, cause I learned my lesson to only having one. Thanks so much for a great video!
Thank you for this. I got mine apart and found two discs out of place and the contacts were VERY dirty. Cleaned them all up with a light acid and brush, and glued the discs back in place. Worked like a CHAMP! Very informative and helpful. TY.
I had the problem with my 15 Dart SXT remote randomly locking and unlocking the doors and panic going off and this fix worked for me....Thank you so much for posting this very helpful and big money saving tip. I greatly appreciate it. In fact, I ordered another to have as a spare just in case the problem returns in a few years and the kit is obsolete.
Thank you so much for this great video. I took your advice and ordered the new FOB case and it solved my dilemma. Prior to replacing, my RAM would start up on it's own , lock and unlock whenever it felt like it. Thanks again!!
I took my fob apart. Found 2 of the contacts (discs) dislocated which explains why the truck locked itself or unlocked itself sporadically! I didn't have to buy anything. I have contact cleaner here which is good because the contacts were VERY dirty. I then used crazy glue to reposition the contacts. Put the fob back together and it works like the day it was made! Thank you VERY VERY much Sir! Saved me almost $300!
I repaired mine using nothing but a pencil with a rubber eraser and super glue. I took it apart as he demonstrates. Once I got to the pad and board, I saw the discs had come loose. I cleaned the circuit with the eraser and then super glued the discs back into place. It's been a year since I did the repair and have had no issues since. The repair cost me little to no money. I am not sure what a tiny drop of glue costs. The method in the video might be advisable if I find those discs come unglued within the next year or two. Otherwise, if you have all the parts right there and they just need some glue, then just glue them back on and there you go.
Huge Thanks @MotorCity Mechanic, that little disc is exactly what happened with mine. New pad ordered. $13 Canadian for 2 new pads sounds a hell of a lot better then the $100 plus at the dealer!!!
I've fixed so many issues with my Chrysler thanks to your videos... Its like you're a distant cousin that I owe a thousand beers too. Amazon homepage updated on our laptops and phones, many thanks MotorCity Mechanic!
Always love all your vids. I just finished a 3.6 Jeep. 2015. Replaced all the followers and lifters. NGK Iridium. Runs perfect. Only one follower was bad. Torquing those oil control valves worked my 73 year old biceps pretty good. I even reinstalled the passenger side intake manifold bracket. Left off the front drivers one though. Hate the plastic push pins and all the other “put there to make them take it to the dealer junk”
Good tips here. When you mentioned your vehicle might not have remote start it reminded me of something maybe somebody else could take advantage of. For about $150 you can add remote start to certain year Ram trucks for sure, not so sure on other Dodge models. Start-X was the brand I used but I'm sure there are others. But the nice thing about it is that its plug and play and uses your existing remote. No splicing wires or anything like that. Did it on my 2010 Ram 1500 and its been working great for over a year.
I'm an automotive locksmith. We have very expensive programmers and CNC milling machines to cut modern car keys. This has nothing to with this video but just some professional advice based on my real world experience. If you ever lose your keys or even want an additional key I would stay away from aftermarket keys. Locksmiths actually make more money with aftermarket than OEM so why do I say this? In our experience it's hit or miss if they program. If you do get them to program we have had callbacks maybe 3 months after. The fob stopped working. Nissan and Infiniti are really bad. We made a decision not to use aftermarket any more. Swapping the case as in this video is fine as you are still using the OEM board. if you want to save money an OEM refurb is better than aftermarket. I tell people that complain about the price I didn't make your car, I don't make the fobs and I didn't lose your keys. If they don't want to pay for OEM's they can call someone else. If I sell them an aftermarket FOB a little cheaper and I have to come out down the road because the FOB failed neither one of us will be happy. Just my two cents.
@@MorePowerHouston I learned two or three things from his comment if you're too dumb to learn stuff shut up and go read the cereal box. I'm too dumb to understand your word so you need to be quiet😂 That's you
Thanks for the advice, still with all that said it's wrong and sad that these obvious rackets exist. My poor aunt paid +$400 for a single replacement key for her Dodge Van... So much for groceries for the month smh.
Yup, I had issues where I'd walk out to my truck in the morning and find it unlocked. I know I locked it. I got paranoid, double checked that it was locked every evening and the next morning unlocked. Drove me crazy. Finally realized the fob was going wonky. Popped it apart and just like you said, the little metal disc was loose and randomly locking/unlocking my truck. I cleaned it up and swapped it with my spare. Now I know how to fix it. THANKS!!!
Man one of the best how to videos ive seen . Very detailed and solved my issue. My 2010 Chrysler 300 remote works perfectly now. Thanks to you brother.
Hey David as always ANOTHER GREAT/IMFORMATIVE video. I have a 2010 Ram 3500 dully. 1 of my remotes when I use it to lock the truck up. The truck will unlock it self later. So I need to make sure I don't lock it down for the night.
Oh boy, that's my remote for my 2008 Challenger... Ahem, alright sir, I'm sitting up straight and paying attention.... Great to see that you are back! I like what you are doing!
Great video Dave. I did something a little different on my 2010 charger that I had the same exact problem. I cleaned up the rubber pads with some nail polish remover let it dry and just superglued them back in. A year later and it’s still working. Be careful though, just a little dab is all you need
You sir are awesome. I didn't even know this was an option. I just removed the battery and used the key to unlock because the alarm kept going off randomly. My old key even had duct tape holding it together. Works great now.
Thank you Mr. Pike, didn't know Amazon sold the remote outer shell with new metal disc. I also was successful in lightly gluing the metal disc back in place with just a drop of super glue. At least the MOPAR remotes use a metal disc. My GM remote uses some type of carbon infused button that is not so easy to repair button connectivity when the carbon layer is gone. I used a bit of conductive paint (for window defrost window grid repair). A car remote gets a lot of use and it should be a simple self repair for button connectivity, instead wasting dealer professional time to reprogram new remote keys.
This was a very helpful video, was about to spend a lot of money on a new fob and programmer. But thanks to this video I ended up spending 11 bucks on eBay for a replacement shell and it works perfectly. So thank you very much!!
Brilliant! I opened up my Fobik and -- sure enough -- the disks were out of kilter, so I just ordered two shells to do your fix. I'll see how it goes, but I have every reason to expect it to work perfectly. Thanks!
I have a 2008 Grand Cherokee with the FOBIK with the battery in the case as you showed. However it never had any metal discs on the rubber cover to make the contacts. It has conductive carbon pads that wear out and quit making contact.
Your video helped me immensely figure out the slightly different problem with my Ram truck remote, which I fixed for nothing saving me hundreds in $ if I had to buy a new one and have it reprogrammed! Many many thanks!!!
Best video on this other videos are good but no one talked about only replacing the case. I did clean the contacts on my old one that did help but I think the contacts may have gotten loose But thanks for the ideas
I might be a little late. I just bought my little brothers 2012 challenger. Key fob buttons did not work. Opened it up the metal buttons were off. I just used electrical tape to keep them in place. And works fine for now. Ill definitely buy another fob eventually and swap them out. Thanks for the heads up!
I just had to do this to my 2017 RAM 2500. It would keep locking randomly as described in the video. Another way to clean the contacts is to use a pencil eraser. Swirl it around the contacts on the circuit board. Just make sure you get any eraser residue off before putting the FOB back together.
Thanks Dave. I too have used the pencil eraser trick on lots of remotes mostly GM ones. It really improved the contact surface and range of the remote.
I am going to give this guy CREDIT!!! I purchased some key fobs for my Dodge Grand Caravan in July 2023. I was going to get them programmed for $150 each. $300. I came across this video and it SAVED me $$$. It worked. Now I have 2 keys that work and the valet keys transfer as well. No need to get keys cut😂😂😂😂.
Many, many thanks. You just saved me a bundle. Bought the shell as you suggested. Works like a charm. Just need to get the blank key cut. Thanks again 🇨🇦
Great video, i was actually able to open mine and shift those small little circular items back into place. Now my remote works like new! Added a new battery while at it as well. 😅
Worked awesome!! Thankyou for such a good, descriptive clear video! My original key fob was driving me nuts with the super sensitive touch unlocking and locking my truck while in my pocket! I couldn't be happier now😊
Thank you so much. I was wondering why mine wasnt working after i replaced the rubber. I have the one with the phillips head screw and just made the modification and it works perfectly.
Thanks for another great tip. I personally was able to swop out the new rubber and meticulously place it into the original key fob. I have the remote with the set screw in the ass end. Other option was to put the original guts into the new key fob and swap out the valet key. The only thing with that was, it was hard to pull out valet key in the new cheap Chinese made key fob. So, I went with the other route. Only time will tell if it holds up.
👍👍 I have a 2012 Ram 1500 non remote start. My lock/unlock buttons stopped working, went to Batteries+ to get a new battery, the new battery didn’t fix the problem, the guy said that he’s sure that the (circuit board) was bad, the dealership wanted $400.00 total out the door, I passed because of the price. That was four years ago, I’m using the Valet key to unlock the door, my wife doesn’t have problems with hers. I’m gonna check & see if Amazon has what I need. I prefer the ole school keys, they’re less pain
Thanks. This is exactly whats going on with mine. I dont get the "button feel" and the doors lock and unlock. The little metal contacts have come loose and are always making contact with the circuit board. I called the dodge dealer and asked how much a new fob is. Its a lot more than 100$ theyre charging 400$ for one fob. So if i can fix my fob easily enough ill take that option.
Man, this was great information. My truck just started doing these crazy things. I was being to think I ha a poltergeist or gremlins in the system. Then I was like self let's go over and see if ol' David Pike has a fix for this. Thanks dude!
I had to open mine up and remove the panic disc, every time i put the ket in the ignition to start my Ram it would activate the horn and lights. Great video!1
I just did this with a newer version of the Chrysler keys, my rubber buttons started to shred apart. Found just the shell and moved to circuit board. Now my 200 has a new “red” key for only $10
Another great video!! In lieu of solvents on those contacts I've cleaned mine up and a few friends with nothin more than a light scrubbing with a pencil eraser. Seems to work well. Thank you boss and keep up the great work man! 😎👍
Yeah the dealership wanted $200 to replace the fob. I knew it was the little discs had come unglued. Nothing seemed to last long when regluing it. Thanks for the heads up on the shell replacement.
Thank you for this video i just bought a jeep commander and the battery was dead and had to be changed. Now i know what to do to fix the buttons that havent worked. Great video.😊
Hey thanks man! I had no idea they sold just the 'skins' as they call them. My remote has been acting a bit weird and I thought it was the battery but it's not, so I'll just get one of these things. Cool!
Thanks flr the heads up. Both remotes for our 09 Ram are still going strong on original batteries (bought the truck new). However, have noticed random intermittent locking. Opened up my main remote to find one of the discs in-place, but loose. Going to get a couple 👍
I've made the repair a few times by just placing a dab of silicone adhesive (Goop or E6000) where the disk goes and sticking the disk back in place. Zip cost, providing you don't lose the disk when you open the case.
Wait a minute. There are some mopar passive keyless entry systems which unlock when you just touch the door handle and the key fob is in your pocket. If you have that sytem there's not necessarily anything wrong with the fob. My wife's jeep has that particular security system.
I have an 09 challenger with just one key fob. I'd like a spare. It has Panic, door lock, door unlock, trunk unlock, & remote start. It also has push-to-start button on dash. What is the best(& cheapest) way to get another fob like the original one I have?
Bummer!!!! I saw this video 2 days too late!!!! I purchased replacement fobs ($25/pair) but I paid a locksmith $30 to program them (actually a bargain compared to what the dealer wanted) when all I needed to do was swap the covers. Oh well I know better for next time, the fobs only last about five years.
Nice video. Just want to share some other ways to fix it. If the metal disk is not lost, I initially just glue the disk to the cover again. Though it only works for a year or so. Somehow I decided to buy a cheap fob from ebay. That fob comes with a circuit board shape tape with those disk at right places. Then it could be taped to the circuit board. I think this is almost a permanent fix. Somehow the cheapest fix is just to tape those metal disk by ourselves. Don't even need to buy any fob or part.
@@richardcroll9135 gorilla glue from grocery store. It will fall off and may mess up the rubber cover after a few months . Carefully cut a tape and cover the circuit board is better. When I bought the fob with precut tape from ebay, it around $6. It may not worth the hassle to cut a tape by myself 😂. It has been 3 years and no issues
My parents have three fobs 2013 dodge grand caravan. 2 of the fobs have worn contacts the gold colored parts under the buttons its a shame. Of course replaced the rubber gasket but doesnt make much of a difference because you still have to press the button a bunch of times, hoping it makes contact with the pcb the contacts on the pcb are faded even after cleaning and visually worn compared to the third fob. I might be desolding the chips onto new boards soon because the programming trick wont work without a tool at least I couldnt get it to work. I have quicker soldering skills then ordering more equipment or I could just tin up those worn contacts with the solder. I haven't tried that yet. I hope thatll get them by because I bought 2 new fobs off amazon. Let me know if anyone has other advice right now they are using 2 of those fobs, but they have to mess around on both to get the car unlocked and remote started the third is with another family member.
I did this about a year ago. My battery is with the board, not in the case. The other day my fob quit working entirely. Turned out the battery needed a shim of paper to keep pressure against the circuit board. 2014 fob working great again.
THANKS, This is an Awesome Tip, I didn't realize that this fix was so easy. Now you have me thinking that I can possibly fix other fobs from different makes and models similarly. 👍👍
got a battery. I followed your directions on how to take it apart and replace the battery. But only the panic button works. Not the door buttons so I will go on Amazon. And order that feature, thank you so much.
Thanks for this video I was about to spend over $200 to get my key replaced. My husband likes it when I get more independent. So, I guess my husband thanks you also. 😁😁
That's the dealer for you. I saw this video 2 days too late and I had a locksmith program the fobs that I bought ($25 for 2 from amazon) and he only charged me $30. Next time (the fobs only last about 5 years) I'm going to replace the cover and save the re-programing costs.
I have a 2016 Ram 1500. I got the key fob off Amazon, the old without the screw in the back. I used a pair of little clippers and cut the new one to match up with the original one. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM! THANKS!!! Saved me so much money!!!! My Man!

thank you so much my alarm was going off randomly and my lock button wasnt working this did the trick much respect
I see this issue sooooo often. Glad you caught it and was able to fix it. Thanks for the comment and for watching
Took care of problem for my 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. Really appreciate it. Thank you!
Glad it helped! Make sure to subscribe
Thanks for the good tip! Our Hawaii dealership charges almost $500 for a new key fob and to program it.
I called my local dealer stateside. 600 for just 2 fobs, no key, 720 for 2 fobs and keys.
Insanely timely. Mine broke yesterday.
Thanks for watching and for the comment
Thank you very much for this video. You saved me over $300.00 on my Jeep Cherokees fob reprogramming!!!!
Awesome articulation of the remotes and great video for backyard guys like myself...thanks for doing the heavy lifting.
Really clever solution....so simple but solves the issue! Thanks!
Man, this was great information. My truck just started doing these crazy things. I was being to think I ha a poltergeist or gremlins in the system. Then I was like self let's go over and see if ol' David Pike has a fix for this. Thanks dude!
Thanks! Just ordered for my ‘09 challenger, as last time I opened it, I had to use the Skelton key, and set off the security alarm
Thank you so much! Saved me much money from buying another key fob and programmer from Tom’s keys.
I had to open mine up and remove the panic disc, every time i put the ket in the ignition to start my Ram it would activate the horn and lights. Great video!1
Thanks David
This is exactly the issue I have with my remote. 👍
2012 Ram found the part on amazon for about $6.00 works perfect, saved me over a $100.00 bucks!
I opened mine up, cleaned the little disks, taped them to the chip, put back together and problem solved. $0 for parts, $16.00 for a 12 pk of beer.
What truck?
I just did this with a newer version of the Chrysler keys, my rubber buttons started to shred apart. Found just the shell and moved to circuit board. Now my 200 has a new “red” key for only $10
I need to check into the shells as well. It’s funny what I come across and what I don’t lol
Another great video!!
In lieu of solvents on those contacts I've cleaned mine up and a few friends with nothin more than a light scrubbing with a pencil eraser.
Seems to work well.
Thank you boss and keep up the great work man!
😎👍
Nothing like a cheap repair! Thanks for watching
Fantastic fix. I used a piece of clear tape to secure the parts last time, which is failing after 6 months or so.
@Contact Me@MotorCityMechanic I'm assuming this is a scam
Is there a way to resync these? I replaced it and it still doesn't do anything, nice and clicky though
Yeah the dealership wanted $200 to replace the fob. I knew it was the little discs had come unglued. Nothing seemed to last long when regluing it. Thanks for the heads up on the shell replacement.
Or fix them for free. Center the loose disk(s) over the rings and Scotchtape them back in place. It's been three years and mine continue to work fine.
Have you tried doing it with gel CA glue? I was wondering what might hold up best.
You put the scotch tape over the disk and they work?
I just done this, cost 16 but worked nonetheless. Just needed the buttons and she’s back working.
Thank you for this video i just bought a jeep commander and the battery was dead and had to be changed. Now i know what to do to fix the buttons that havent worked. Great video.😊
Awesome! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment
Hey thanks man! I had no idea they sold just the 'skins' as they call them. My remote has been acting a bit weird and I thought it was the battery but it's not, so I'll just get one of these things. Cool!
The one with the door on the back you can cut it open and replace the entire shell.
Thanks Dave. Good to know! 👍🏻
Great Fix. I had the remote that had the phillips screw and it and was able to get it apart and repair it with no problems.
Saves me about $130 bucks. Thanks G! 🤘
The Ram dealer in Melbourne Florida charges $197.00 for the remote, then another $79.00 to program it.
Not bad
I always wondered why my locks on my truck would unlock as I’m walking up to my truck!!! 😂😂😂😂. Thanks for the info!
Your welcome! Appreciate you watching the latest video
DonR.. Thank you man. I never know when someone needs help.
Yes perfect. Thats what I needed! Also, you keep saying “key difference” and that’s a top tier pun. So… pun intended or not haha
Great video David! Always have helpful tips and tricks
I like that idea….an overlay. Sounds even better to me. Thanks for that info
What kind of glue did you use to glue the metal discs back on. What you do it differently if you did it today?
@@richardcroll9135 gorilla glue from grocery store. It will fall off and may mess up the rubber cover after a few months . Carefully cut a tape and cover the circuit board is better. When I bought the fob with precut tape from ebay, it around $6. It may not worth the hassle to cut a tape by myself 😂. It has been 3 years and no issues
Thank you sir, I avoided a $200.+ bill with 2 little strips of scotch tape.
Circuit board cleaning is usually done with IPA or Acetone and a cotton swab or toothbrush if really dirty.
I did this about a year ago.
My battery is with the board, not in the case.
The other day my fob quit working entirely.
Turned out the battery needed a shim of paper to keep pressure against the circuit board.
2014 fob working great again.
Where did u get the fob with the battery on the board?
THANKS, This is an Awesome Tip, I didn't realize that this fix was so easy.
Now you have me thinking that I can possibly fix other fobs from different makes and models similarly. 👍👍
It’s possible they offer others as well. Must have actually buttons and not they rounds discs. Thanks for watching and for the comment
got a battery. I followed your directions on how to take it apart and replace the battery. But only the panic button works. Not the door buttons so I will go on Amazon. And order that feature, thank you so much.
Worked like a charm.
Done in less than 5 minutes.
Thanks.
Thanks for this video I was about to spend over $200 to get my key replaced. My husband likes it when I get more independent. So, I guess my husband thanks you also. 😁😁
O’Reilly’s and Amazon have replacement covers that you can put the circuit board in.
Years ago I was quoted $380 plus $85 to program and get a 2nd fob for my 2012 RAM.
That's the dealer for you. I saw this video 2 days too late and I had a locksmith program the fobs that I bought ($25 for 2 from amazon) and he only charged me $30. Next time (the fobs only last about 5 years) I'm going to replace the cover and save the re-programing costs.
Yoooo. For real!!! Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed how you showed different examples of the different keys. That was great.
Yes thx ! My mom had problem. She come back windows rolled down. I put new battery in seems be working
