i don't know where I heard this from but I like "peeping needle" for sorcerous spyglass... because it is a pithing needle allowing you to look at the opponents hand.(explainong the joke improves the joke)
In my playgroup there's one guy who plays Beckett brass in commander and everyone including him calls it the "granny panties" deck and I either don't get the reference or don't get them. Still hilarious though.
Wasn't the "Helps to have a map" that realllly bad werewolf game? The one where you eventually become one and its just them lowering the camera? GUISE OF THE WOLF! THAT'S IT!
While there's lots of good potential nicknames for Jace, Cunning Castaway, I like either "Jace the Sandsculptor" or "Wizard of the Coast". Makeshift Munitions is "headcannon" for obvious reasons. Regisaur Alpha is "Reggie" because he get's other bodies ready.
During the Lurking Chupacabra bit, the words "Abra Chewbacca" came to mind. Not relevant to the card, but I like a magic spell which casts an enraged wookie at people.
Some alternates Siren Lookout: Scry in the Sky Storm Fleet Aerialist: Stwom Fweet Aewialwist Raptor Hatchling: "I'm da baby! Gotta love me!" Rowdy Crew: Friday Night D&D Shadowed Caravel: "You are sure nobody's followed us?"
For Steadfast Armasaur, I've been calling it Firstest-strike-osaur, which is definitely natural and easy to say. Thanks for the podcast and everything else!
(rewrote some of these to better fit the meter) Mavren Fein Casts for 2 generic and a plains Mavren Fein Makes vampire tokens with lifegain Mavren Fein Character aesthetic based on Spain
Worth mentioning that your nickname for Kinjalli's Sunwing, "Hatebeak" is the name of a joke metal band whose music is just death metal... except someone's pet parrot does the vocals. Their name seems to have been a reference to the band Hatebreed, just... better.
"___" and "Ow" are Un-cards with less than 3-letter names. "Duh" and "Who//Why" are 3 letters, along with "Far", "Cut", "Day", "Ice", "Wax", and both halves of "Hit//Run" from black-bordered split cards. Plus there's Zap, Tek, Fog, Opt, Okk, Nix, Web for whole cards.
59:06 I was just watching Temple Of The Lava Bears again and Graham forgot the name of the game and here he says, Fireball Island. He got the name this time.
Charging Monstrosaur is also "Budgie McRazorface" as per the artist before they told him what the actual card name was. For Makeshift Munitions I feel like there's a joke to be made with the fact that there's a goblin in the magic story called Breeches and breech loading a weapon, but this cannon is clearly muzzle loading so I'm just kinda lost. For the record Gishath is a Giganotosaurus, not a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I realized those were scale boats. Just the canvas alone for one of those sails must weigh as much as a regular frigate.
When I first saw Mavren Fein, I thought his name was spelt Marven, so I've just been calling him Marvin Vein. Also Azcanta, the Sunken Ruin is absolutely just Zora's Domain to me. The music plays in my head and everything.
Dark Confident is indeed Bob, but "Bob from Accounting" is something else. Unglued 2 (the one that never got released but had art and everything) had a card called Bob from Accounting, which is a reference to an old TV commercial for MTG, in which Bob from accounting is sent into the arena to battle a giant lizard or something. It was revealed here: magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/un-seen-2013-08-08
Priest of the Wakening Sun: "There is a priest on Ixalan they call the wake'nin sun. If you have a dino, he'll give you two life, or sac him to find one" Boneyard Parley: Fact or Malediction Grim Captain's Call: "I want one of those and one of those and one of those..." Raptor Hatchling: Not the momma! Growing Rites of Itlimoc: "Fahoo Fores, Dahoo Dores..."
Looming Altisaur - "Bumper Car" Because in a world of giant death lizards, the Looming Altisaur is basically a giant Bumper Car. Raptor Companion - I didn't come up with it myself, but "Razzle Dazzle Raptor" Gishath - "Rexie" After the iconic T-Rex from Jurassic Park
Raptor Companion- Raptor friend! Sanguine Sacrament- Immortal Suns' Zenith I would think the Coatls would be dragons released by Orazca, if they show up. At the table next to me, it was actually relevant that Walk the Plank could kill Fleet Swallower. I also really like "Helps to have a mop" for viscera cleanup detail
Skittering Heartstopper really only has 2 choices: Mustache Centipede or (singing when you play it) I am the Millipede I am amazing" from Charlie the Unicorn
Looming Altisaur could have had some kind of "can only be blocked by at least one creature with flying and one without" to make it interesting I think.
Rootbound Crag could also be Dinosaur's Pride Rock (Lion King reference cause the dinosaur looks like it is on a mirrored "Pride Rock" like outcropping.
sidepoint emperor's vanguard is known as why don't you have a keyword, wait what the heck, I have definitely never seen that firecannon in two prerelease pools, 2 phantom sealed events or a friend's entire box does that card actually exist?
It's is natural that NOT all cards are easily nicknamed, for there are a lot of generic cards that simply can't hold an speciality to them. Also, I've caught myself saying "Get down!" instead of Dive Down, even though it doesn't involve any sacrifices. Herald of Secret Streams is obviously Stream Sniper, and Gangplank for Walk the Plank!
Hey all! Not sure what happened with that weird audio glitch, but Vraska is The Amazing Captain Gorgon. Cheers!
i don't know where I heard this from but I like "peeping needle" for sorcerous spyglass... because it is a pithing needle allowing you to look at the opponents hand.(explainong the joke improves the joke)
She came on stream, you all turned to stone. Seems legit.
How could you miss the "Armed and Dangerous" pun for Costly Plunder?
Wizard of the Coast! Oh, that's gold!
I'm also down with nice and simple, Pirate Jace
Jace the body-sculptor. or, Chad's gym buddy, Jason
My roommate and I have been referring to Mavren Fein as 'Marvin Fine'.
I prefer Marvin Gaye.
Regarding Walk the Plank - fish are killed by the walk part.
There's six chalices in Magic. Three of them make mana. Three of them gain life. One is Chalice of the Void.
According to a recent article, WotC was internally calling Sky Terror "Scary Pteri". So that's fun.
Raptor Hatchling = "I'm Telling Mom!"
26:53
Explaining the joke, improves the joke.
New playmat idea? As a spoof of the Prof's playmat?
Why is Angrath's Maurauders not Furnace of Angrath
I've been calling Growing Rites of Itlamoc "IKEA's Cradle". Since its a cradle you gotta spend some time building
Dinosaurs hate improving the joke, especially when Avacyn explains the joke is the symbol of her church.
as a midrange card that normally reads 'cast this and your opp takes 3' I have started lovingly referring to the alpha as 'siege dino'
The nickname episodes always make me laugh! And I'll definitely be using some of these in the future :P
Side note: awesome TWSBI pen Cam!
Captain Lannery Storm should have been "Storm Count is one"
I laughed much harder at "Damp Feet Antelope???!" than I should have.
During the Lurking Chupacabra bit, the words "Abra Chewbacca" came to mind.
Not relevant to the card, but I like a magic spell which casts an enraged wookie at people.
my nickname for Carnage Tyrant is Yoshi. He's the best part of the game and you just ride him to victory.
Some alternates
Siren Lookout: Scry in the Sky
Storm Fleet Aerialist: Stwom Fweet Aewialwist
Raptor Hatchling: "I'm da baby! Gotta love me!"
Rowdy Crew: Friday Night D&D
Shadowed Caravel: "You are sure nobody's followed us?"
wtf happened at 1:12:00
Fell Flagship is "Shipnotic Spectre" or "Hypnautical Spectre".
For Steadfast Armasaur, I've been calling it Firstest-strike-osaur, which is definitely natural and easy to say.
Thanks for the podcast and everything else!

Mavren Fein

Raptor Hatchling = "I'm the baby, gotta love me!"
I love that you guys had multiple dinorider names
Great episode, always love the nicknames, I listen to them on my commute to college. But did I miss the Hour of Devastation nicknames?
Sorcerous Spyglass should be Peeking Needle :D
Yay! First nicknames podcast in the new studio!
Alternative name for Fathom Fleet Captain -- "My Man!"
Worth mentioning that your nickname for Kinjalli's Sunwing, "Hatebeak" is the name of a joke metal band whose music is just death metal... except someone's pet parrot does the vocals. Their name seems to have been a reference to the band Hatebreed, just... better.
I Still use Arthur "Two-Shields" Jackson As a nickname for Bloodsoaked Champion. That name is gold.
Did everyone get a buffering glitch after the joke for Vraska's nickname or was that just me? Either way, I laughed reeeaal hard. Thanks, LRR!
"the amazing Captain *turned into stone*"
Buffer happens, wonder to myself "did anyone else see this?"
I've been looking forward to this!
Yeeeess! I love this podcast so much!
Is Cameron holding a twsbi vac 700 fountain pen during the podcast?
I'd go with "Hotel California" for Ixalan's binding
Ankylosaurs are my favourite because I did a school report on the when I was 11. And their osteoderms are cool!
59:06 I was just watching Temple Of The Lava Bears again and Graham forgot the name of the game and here he says, Fireball Island. He got the name this time.
around 1:12:00 there's weird thing with the audio. is that just me?
I haven't finished the video yet, but what happened to the HOU nicknames??? I was really looking forward to that.
1:12:00 -- big audio glitch right as you nicknamed Vraska D:.
Stowm Fweet Aewiawist
Snapping Sailback (or Slapping Snapback, as I call it) isn't supposed to be a dimetrodon, it's a spinosaurus, hence it ambushing prey in the waters.
"March of the Drowned" wasn't "Washed Up"?
Hey Cam, is that pen a TWSBI Vac 700? I love that pen, I didn't know you were into fountain pens (though I can't say I'm surprised)
I would argue that this is your best since Theros. Which probably says something both about LRR and Wizard's design, on reflection. To be fair.
26:40 i just imagined this "reading the card explains the card
This the one I was waiting for, hiphophooray!
They should of called rallying roar “COME ON FEEL THE NOISE!!!!!”
Dark Nourishment - Blightning Helix
Also there's a nickname somewhere that ties Kopala to Francis Ford Coppola and I'm not sure if it's actually just making a Godfather Reference.
steinbeck not known for his thundering, but known for his wrath
cyclopsboi that's a pretty grape joke.
Wow, I hadn't the other ships before in the Dusk Legion Dreadnought art. They clearly no longer need a bigger boat.
I like that Paul almost accidentally came up with one. "Every time you cast Mavren Fein in a game."
Wait, deadeye quartermaster isn't "fetch my boat." That's all I use it for...
I was not expecting a Keijo reference in an MtG video. Is this even real?
Dark Confident is indeed Bob, but "Bob from Accounting" is something else. Unglued 2 (the one that never got released but had art and everything) had a card called Bob from Accounting, which is a reference to an old TV commercial for MTG, in which Bob from accounting is sent into the arena to battle a giant lizard or something. It was revealed here: magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/un-seen-2013-08-08
Our playgroup has taken to calling Settle the Wreckage "Highway to Exile"
Priest of the Wakening Sun: "There is a priest on Ixalan they call the wake'nin sun. If you have a dino, he'll give you two life, or sac him to find one"
Boneyard Parley: Fact or Malediction
Grim Captain's Call: "I want one of those and one of those and one of those..."
Raptor Hatchling: Not the momma!
Growing Rites of Itlimoc: "Fahoo Fores, Dahoo Dores..."
Good stuff all around. But did I miss the Hour of Devastation nicknames episode? Or did they skip that set?
Raptor Companion has consistently been DinoFriend in our group.
Looming Altisaur - "Bumper Car"
Because in a world of giant death lizards, the Looming Altisaur is basically a giant Bumper Car.
Raptor Companion - I didn't come up with it myself, but "Razzle Dazzle Raptor"
Gishath - "Rexie"
After the iconic T-Rex from Jurassic Park
I like just "Bob Squarepants" for the Gilded Sentinel
12:04 "you just made my list of things to do today."
Raptor Companion- Raptor friend!
Sanguine Sacrament- Immortal Suns' Zenith
I would think the Coatls would be dragons released by Orazca, if they show up. At the table next to me, it was actually relevant that Walk the Plank could kill Fleet Swallower.
I also really like "Helps to have a mop" for viscera cleanup detail
I legitimately couldn't tell if that's a candle or a drink next to Graham
Tony Blackwell it's a nicknames episode, it's definelty a drink
"Helps to have a map"
Guard, Guise of the Wolf
For my play group, "Oh hi Mark" is reserved for High Market
"Nix" from Future Sight is tied with opt for letters
And "Ow" being the shortest, if Un-sets are included.
0 if unsets are included, because there is a card without a name
It is also tied with Hex.
shortest card name (including unsets) is the shapeshifter thats name is just blank
Sorry, guys, but Belligerent Brontodon is CLEARLY Sir Mix-a-Lot.
Does the video glitch for anyone else at 1:12:00? Or is my laptop possessed?
We've taken to calling Legion Conquistadors "The Boys(are back in town)" after a draft deck with 4 of them wiped the field each time they showed up.
Kinjalli's caller: wax on, wax off
Herald of Secret Streams: the HOSS
Skittering Heartstopper really only has 2 choices:
Mustache Centipede
or
(singing when you play it) I am the Millipede I am amazing" from Charlie the Unicorn
Also, can we talk about how many cards there are with Merfolk (and some with Vampires) having a very bad day?
Congrats on nicknaming 2.5 years of standard cards in 3 years.
errr, what was the name for vraska, relic seeker? the video had a hiccup there.
Love the The Room reference lol
Gilded Sentinel could be Goldbot Squarepants, going by the art.
Bishop of Rebirth : Stay Out of the Sun Titan.
Looming Altisaur could have had some kind of "can only be blocked by at least one creature with flying and one without" to make it interesting I think.
What happened to the ones from the planeswalker decks?
Rootbound Crag could also be Dinosaur's Pride Rock (Lion King reference cause the dinosaur looks like it is on a mirrored "Pride Rock" like outcropping.
Is that shelf new?! 0.o
On reflection, I can't believe they missed "Mister/Mrs Steal Yo Girl" for Captivating Crew _or_ Hostage Taker.
15:24 Sheltering Light = Flash Bang Out!
What happened to the Planeswalker deck cards?
sidepoint emperor's vanguard is known as why don't you have a keyword, wait what the heck, I have definitely never seen that firecannon in two prerelease pools, 2 phantom sealed events or a friend's entire box does that card actually exist?
Wasn't jace ingenius mindmage and huatli dino warrior skipped?
+1 for Paul's Garrison Keillor reference (Lake Wobegon).
Full Mavrin Fein song parody when?
Vraska nickname was not heard because of sound issues
I believe it was "Vraska, Captain Gorgon" based on their discussion afterward.
Ferdi the Tank It’s wildly unnatural for every card to get a nickname. Which is why we do it :)
I think you missed with Sun-Crowned Hunters. They should be "Jurassic Sparks"
I'm partial to Air Elemental in this set being "The Wind Beneath my Sails" because pirates!
I call Ruin Raider "Raid Bob". It's nice, short and to the point.
I call him "Rob", cause he's a pirate who "bob"s. He's a robber, steals you a card!
