Blue Atlantic Cedar Bonsai Maintenance and Shaping

- This beautiful Blue Atlantic (Atlas) Cedar, Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca' is in need of a clean up and to be made beautiful again. This is an annual job for all cedars at Bonsai Matsu and it is essential. Plucking, pruning, wiring, guy wires and styling are all part of the work. Care needs to be taken with rough handling any cedar as the small branches and buds can be quite delicate. Enjoy this video of the annual maintenance I undertake for cedars and see the transformation.
Beautiful tree.I’m no expert but you have to be the best bonsai artist in Australia. Can’t wait for your demo’s at the Central Coast bonsai show.
Thank you!! I’m really excited for the Bonsai Open too and make sure you say hello when you’re there too.
Stunning tree 🎄 , I've got two in pond baskets from small seedlings, got some shape in them but going to get them in the ground next spring .
One of my favourite trees to use for bonsai! Great demo, thank you from the UK :-)
Very nice ....Blue Atlantic Cedar bonsai...👍
Love that tree!!
Gorgeous! Also realised I've had a photo of this tree on my phone since 2020! Small aside, we need to get you a lapel mic for these.
It’s coming 😉
Beautiful !
Looks amazing!
Be nice to know which cultivar is this. Seems like varieties of BC have grown
Beautiful tree
Thank you for explaining 🙏
I subscribe 😉
Hi beautiful tree. It would be great to see a close up of the needles you are plucking away, especially for those who don’t have much experience with Cedar trees? Is it a similar process that’s used on Black Pines? Cheers.
Needle reduction work is done on black pines as well.
Any tips for repotting an atlas cedar from a grow pot to a bonsai pot? I’ve heard the timing is very crucial and cedars don’t like too much root work! Thanks for always being inspiring in your content videos and podcast!
Thanks very much! Very kind of you. I’d do it gradually and make sure the tree is really healthy. It may need to be reduced over a few repots to get it small enough for the perfect pot but there’s no rush. So around one third this repot then in a year or two reduce again by about a third. It will depend on the actual rootball size in the pot too, not the pot size.
Thanks for the advice! I’m going to go slow and steady with it!
Este árbol es un espectáculo, lástima que aquí en el sur de España sea casi imposible mantenerlo con vida

What’s with all the needles hanging below the pads on what appear to be spider webs?
@@blueridgebonsai9155 spiders are in all bonsai and become an issue when they get too dense and a reason to pluck old needles.
@@BonsaiMatsuOK, how about some more videos on BAC? There is a total dearth of info on using them for bonsai and given that this is your third most popular video there are a lot of potential viewers who are interested. You could cover basic info like soil mixes, watering, styling, wiring, repotting, and the ever present question of just how to handle their roots. I have a large nursery grown one in development and I have only been able to find a couple of videos that touch on some of these topics.
Is this type of maintenance done in the summer, spring, fall, or winter?
@@Shackattack85 late summer or early fall depending on the temperature. This video was made in late summer for me.
In what month is needle cleaning done?
Where abouts are you? This was filmed in Melbourne, Australia
