A sympathetic advice for people that will work on future custom levels : Never bring the drift back from 3-5 in your custom levels, it’s miserable.

Using the slide and the boost at the same time gives the desired drifting effect rather than the automated drift.

I mean I've seen some levels that are still in development that make great use of the drift (I.E. project equinox Eternal Highway level) where you drift for no more than 3 seconds for a single very sharp turn, and it works perfectly! But I agree that it wasn't well utilized at all here.

sonic can turn without sliding and drifting anyways, just rotate the analog stick past 90 degrees

Maybe, but unfortunately the Frontiers automatic drift is still an inferior interpretation of the drift compared it's two earlier iterations in both Unleashed and Generations.
Not to mention that it's ultimately pointless since it happens at such a low speed where normally you would and should just be able to turn immediately, at least outside the Cyberspace levels or if you use a physics mod in them, which most of us are likely gonna do.

Update 3 Cyberspace stages was Sonic Team going balls to the walls with tons of random creative ideas for fun gameplay, this totally fits that bill.
