I really enjoyed your video! One minor nitpick, though, is that some of the Gen 4 Pokemon that you mentioned (specifically Gallade, Gliscor and Mamoswine) couldn't be obtained until the postgame in Diamond and Pearl (through pokeradar, dual slot mode and swarm, respectively), taking away some of your options. However, it likely shouldn't have too big an effect on the final conclusions you came to for the games.
Very fair nitpick lol. I blatantly went against one of my own rules 🙃 Side note: Why give us great evolutions in DP if we can’t even use them during the main game???
That’s mainly my issue with most of the suggestions is, they’re not counting how they’re obtained in what order you can obtain them with decent moves and how long it’s going to take to train them up if there under levelled.
@shepskydad This is especially aggravating with Magmortar. There are already so few Fire-type mons, then they even take away one that was introduced in that very game?
This is a niche request, but I always loved playing the games by challenging the gym leaders with their own type - but this is only possible for certain games, and in others its extremely limiting. If you ever wanna make a video for me specifically as a funny treat, an assessment of each core game for their compatibility with this type of challenge would be super interesting. But then again, I've loved all your content so whatever you do next will be great anyway!
Galapagos tortoises are about 5’ tall at the top of their shell and weigh 500 lbs. Torterra is only 7’3” because of the tree, and I feel like the turtle part isn’t that much bigger then a Galapagos Tortoises is
Idk, that tree looks mature. Unless it's meant to be some kind of bonsai situation, I'd have assumed it to be an adult tree, and therefore a few hundred pounds on its own, at minimum
This guys' videos are at such high visual standards, it's like you're watching some big content creator but you go and look and he's below 5k, it's insane. Glad to be apart of what will surely become big channel from the beginning
When I played BDSP steel run, Scizor was surprisingly my ace. Spamming double team and swords dance, he swept Cynthia's entire team without getting hit.
Thanks for this, as someone who has done quite a few monotype runs on twitch, bringing any attention to it is great. And I will admit I have not entirely stuck to the rule of having one type before the gym as in some cases i have had to bring in a mon of the type to use off the start/until i get a second member. An alternative name for it could the gym leader run (excluding the gym leaders that have used mons outside their type specialty).
Happy to be of service! For years, I overlooked monotype runs, but now as someone who prefers a more casual challenge, they’re one of my favorites. Especially bc of how it changes your perspective on the game as a whole.
I did a Ground Monotype of Platinum and you actually can get a really good Ground type for Gardenia's Gym. Enter Wormadam Sandy Cloak. It gets Bug Bite for all those pesky Grass Types and Confusion for the Roserade. Also, if you do play a Gen 4 Monotype, my recommendation is to plan where you put your TMs. You don't want to make the mistake of putting your only Earthquake TM on a Pokemon that can learn the move.
Doing a monoground nuzlocke right now and this was really helpful I never even thought of Wormadam. Already 3 gyms in but it should be useful, just gotta hope the first Burmy is Female and wait for Honey trees 😂.
I did a fighting type run in S/V. Quaxly, Annihalape, Gallade, Lucario, Pawmot, and Hawlucha. Truly loved that team. I also used a fire tauros for some gyms.
For Gen 2, you can also use Phanpu before the first gym! You’re able to go to route 43 (or 34? I can never remember) straight from the first route, and it’s a really bulky powerhouse even before it gets to Donphan!
You inspired me to do both a mono-Normal run in SS and a mono-Poison run in LG. Both a lot of fun. I never realized how broken SubSeed is until now. Venusaur basically took out the E4 on its own with Leech Seed/Sub/Protect/Strength. Hoping to see more of these!
I am so glad you said ground for Gen 2. As someone whose Gold cartridge was super glitched, running with Gligar straight from the beginning really helped make the game easier.
A TON of work must have gone into this video, so major props. My favourite types are Dark, Water, and Normal, nothing else comes close to those three, and that's pretty much been consistent since I started the series with Gen 3. I would *probably* agree with you that Fighting is superior to Ground in Diamond and Pearl, but having a Hippowdon with Ice Fang to deal with Cynthia's Garchomp is making Ground look really nice rn. But she does also have Gastrodon, Milotic, and Roserade. so yeah maybe fighting lmao.
monotype is currently probably the most popular type of nuzlocke that people are doing on youtube. how many pokemon and where do you get them, especially if you need to get one critter through a couple of gyms. how to beat trainers that you're weak to. in some games you need to distribute tms or figure out which of them have their own stab moves. but you don't have to do it as a nuzlocke. I think monotypes can be fun to see what kind of pokemon are available and especially if they give you critters you'd never consider. it's a team building exercise. I tried a mono bug team in oras and there were lots of critters and lots of good moves to use.
Heh, i did a ground monotype run in Platinum a while ago and had exactly the team mentioned in the video - Torterra, Gastrodon, Garchomp, Gliscor, Hippowdon, Mamoswine. Super fun, and its one of my favourite types!
I personally love monotype runs. I'm not a huge challenge run person, but this seems like a nice way to add a little challenge, forcing me to use pokemon I normally wouldn't consider, while still getting the thrill of team building, which is the best part of pokemon for me.
0:58 I love grass. A handful of weaknesses a handful of resistances and a handful of types that strong against a very balanced type. And has very high quality Pokemon designs. Of course the best one is definitely Bulbasaur.
I really liked this video, and I'm actually kind of tempted to try a monotype run now. My favorite types are Fire, Steel and Flying. I do think that overall Fighting beats out Ground in the Sinnoh games, though it's a close one. Infernape is definitely amazing, and really has a great matchup against several gyms over the course of the game. Add in the other Fighting type options you mentioned, and it's looking pretty good. Ground has more rough spots than Fighting does (for example, dealing with Gardenia or Candice), but in turn, you get an amazing selection of powerhouses, and a clear plan against Cynthia's Garchomp. For example, in my first Diamond playthrough, I beat Garchomp with a Gastrodon using Ice Beam, and the fact you can have your own Garchomp is also amazing. I think if it weren't for the fact that Ground has harder matchups throughout the game than Fighting does, I would give it to Ground as the best type for a monotype run in Sinnoh. I do think the options for Ground type are overall better, but you face much harder matchups at different points than the Fighting type does. Aside from Lucian, and obviously Cynthia (though to be fair, I don't think there's any type that would give you an easy matchup against her), I don't really see the Fighting type struggling against any other important trainers. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that in a vacuum, the Ground type options are probably better, but when considering the matchups you're up against during a Sinnoh playthrough, Fighting has an easier time, if that makes sense.
The 7'03" for Torterra is its length not height, Pokemon that are longer than they are tall measure by length, its why Ekans is 6'07" and Furret is 5'11"
Did a mono-Steel run in Platinum recently. Because I don't have anyone to do multiplayer with, Scizor was a no-go, and as such went through the first 2/3 of the game with only half a team. Gave me some greater appreciation for Steelix, and also had some fun with physical Empoleon.
I'm surprised Grass wasn't the runner-up in Hoenn when you can get pokemon such as Sceptile, Cradily, Ludicolo, Shiftry, Breloom, etc, and if you're playing sapphire you gave a decent advantage. Also you mentioned you don't include 3rd versions but in DP you can't get Ralts during the main game.
leaving a comment to boost the algorithm! my favorite type is normal, especially the earlier gen pink ones. we just dont get many pinkies anymore since fairy type was added
Id argue that the Normal type would be the best for gen one. Like you would struggle at first, but after the first few gyms you could steam roll the rest of the game, especially if you could get you hands on Snorlax, Tauros, Chansey, or Persian (in blue version). The sheer power of some of these normal types completely out weighs the fact most of them don't have a secondary type.
Normal doesn't even struggle early. Rattata learns Hyper Fang super early and can take down Brock only a little slower than Charmander or Butterfree. After that your options start opening up and you can get a lot of experience before needing to battle Misty, after that the game really opens up. The problem with Normal is how many great options you have to choose from.
Also not having a second type is more of an advantage than a disadvantage, there are very few Fighting type attacks in the game and most can be dealt with using a Normal/Flying Pokemon. Also tons of Normal types have a wide movepool that you won't be missing out on type coverage.
This was a very specific video I've been wanting to see. I've been interested in doing monotype hardcore nuzlockes and was curious what types to try out. Imo great type to solo gen 4 is flying as you get a ton of secondary type variety (platinum) staraptor, Gyarados, driftblim, gliscor, pelliper, togekiss, crobat, honchcrow, Scyther, vespiqueen, altaria, yanmega, mantine, tropius. There's so much variety there . otherwise I agree with your choices ❤
I always love monotype runs because they make the game more difficult without making you spend hours preparing and grinding. They're easily the best casual challenge run imo. Personal fave is poison, always an interesting run with options to choose and forces you to actually strategise rather than just spamming high powered moves.
I once tried a Dark monotipe in Saphire and it was hilarious. All the Pokémon you can use are physical attackers (in a game where Dark moves are special) and even worse, there are shared dual types: 2 monodark, 2 water-dark and 2 grass-dark
I am of the opinion that route 3 mons should be available before the first gym in black/white. Rock, flying, and electric types negate the need for the monkeys to exist
im a ghost type specialist to the core, and for a very long time did exclusively monotype runs because of how much i liked them. i gotta say, its an interesting challenge when youre presented with crazy amounts of dark types from the antagonist teams. dark/normal zigzagoon in sword and shield caused a ton of problems.
I did a black dark monotype challenge. You are only stuck with purloin for the first two gyms as you can get scraggy and sandile before Burgh. The biggest challenges were Lenora and Skyla because I played with level caps.
I've been doing monotype runs for years, it's a lot of fun because they force you to use species you otherwise wouldn't to fill coverage gaps in your team. Of course, I only started recording them recently, but that's another story entirely.
When I was little I started doing mono Water runs because I loved the Water types so much and now that’s all I can do because I constantly forget the weaknesses and resistances of the other types, so looks like I’m sticking with Water forever
I've done a poison type mono of diamond, it was incredibly good and I'm sad it wasn't mentioned here; Roserade, Crobat, Haunter/Gengar, Tentacruel, Drapion, Skuntank, Toxicroak, and Dustox too I guess. Very powerful mons with incredibly good stab coverage, as well as two only weak to ground moves.
Coincidentally I did a mono-normal run of Crystal around the time this video originally came out. It went pretty spectacularly, and as far as the "no advantages" part goes, gens 1-3 were more about brute forcing and coverage moves than actual good type matchups anyways.
I really enjoyed this video so please don't think my nitpicking is saying the opposite, it was great! Two small issues I noticed in this video though. In Diamond and Pearl you can't get Ralts before beating the game since it requires the PokeRadar which you get after the Nat Dex. I still think Fighting is the strongest there regardless though so it's no big deal. Also, In Black and White there's a small patch of sand where you can catch Sandlie before fighting Burgh. That'd make a pretty big difference in my opinion since Sandile is neutral to the bug moves he's using instead of weak to them. Also it learns Rock Tomb(found in the Desert Resort) so getting a few extra levels on it before Eliza would be a biiig bonus. Still probably not the best type, but I think you seriously short changed them with that bit of knowledge missing.
I'm honestly a bit baffled that Flying wasn't mentioned in this video, since it's arguably the most versatile type ever made. Besides Gen V, there's no single Gen where the Flying type would not be recommended, mostly because of the existence of Gyarados and Pelipper as amazing, early games Water/Flying options that carry you through most of the Rock or Steel roadblocks. Even when those are not available before the first gym, access to extremely early evolution bugs like Beautifly and Butterfree helps (for the most part) against Brock, Roxanne and Roark. Electric types are by far the biggest hurdle, but access to some Ground or Dragon/Flying types and/or access to Earthquake TM can mitigate that. Otherwise, just brute force through them with Gyarados. Seriously, that Pokémon is a demon! How hard can it be to do it? 😆 So yeah, that concludes my TED Talk in favor of the usage of Flying Type ❤️ 🕊️
All really great things to bring up! Flying is consistently good across the board, and has those really nice options to help get through Rock types. Maybe it’ll come up in part 2 👀
There's actually a problem with black and white games , after the first badge (striaton city) you can't move on to the next town without atleast two pokemon so if we go monotype we just end up being stuck doesn't matter if it's fighting or dark ( normal is the only one that works.
I have done a grass and a bug monorun for all regions: FR/LG, HG/SS, Emerald, Platinum, Black, and white, black & white 2, X/Y , ORAS and USUM, and all of them were fun. I definitely recommend giving it a try. Kanto is the toughest. but the top 3 grass types for monoruns are Tangrowth, Cradily and ferrothorn probably
Personally, the only monotype run I've ever done was a Bug run of Black 2 and it was an absolute blast. Gen 5 adds so many amazing Bug types to the game. My final team ended up being Scolipede, Leavany, Crustle, Escavalier, Volcarona and Galvantula and most of those Pokémon are still to this day some of my all-time favorites.
My favorite type is a toss up between grass and rock. They’ve both got a really great roster of Pokémon, and have a lot of potential for fakemon creation.
I actually recently did a mono-water run of Crystal recently and it was a ton of fun. Got to use a lot of great pokemon like my beloved Feraligatr, as well as awesome dual types like Quagsire, Lantern, and Kingdra. Doesnt hurt that you also get to have a legendary on your team with this strat.
I've done a few monolockes (mono runs with permadeath and level caps, basically), I used poison for FireRed (can confirm this works really well, Weezing MVP!) and flying for HeartGold, and also did Normal and Bug lockes in Violet.
I always did these types of challenges as playthroughs after beating the game with a normal run. To make the games more challenging however. I started doing single type, single evolution pokemon. Zoroark. Mienshao. Lycanroc. Lurantis. That kinda deal. It is a great challenge imo
If I had to guess, Fighting is the best in SV. Flamigo is or at least was used in speed runs. You get it in the first area pretty much. You get options such as Pawmot for electric immunity, Medicham/Gallade for psychics, Lucario should be enough for fairies. Oh and Quaquaval with Aqua Step, if you can get your hands on ability patch for Moxie. There’s also Annihilape with strong setup and near unresisted stabs, Breloom, Great Tusk in scarlet, Hariyama/Heracross for status absorption. Even the worst fightings being Falinks, Toxicroak, Crabominable and Tauros (depending on if you feel like getting the other forms), there’s not really a single bad fighting option. The biggest hurdle will be Revavroom fairy and poison I would think, but you could probably have something bulk up and kill it.
I adore monotype runs! Honestly my favorite type of Pokémon challenge. As for favorite type, definitely water. Probably followed up by grass. I’m actually doing a ghost monotype in Scarlet right now. Added a few extra rules to keep it interesting though!
@@shepskydad most recent team member is palossand but my favorite part about the challenge is the terastallize mechanic and the rule I added around it. I am permitted one non ghost type but they must have a ghost terra type. Also in order to use them they must be terastallized. Grants extra coverage and opens up some interesting strats. I’ve also nearly collected enough gimmieghoul coins to get a gholdengo. I will admit most of the coin collection is off cam but I figure that’s fair. Nobody wants to see somebody running around looking for coins for half a day. But yes I’m very much looking forward to ghost monke
@@anxietypronecucumber4934 I need to use the ghost monke on my next playthrough. After seeing how good it is in competitive I have the urge to see it first hand. And nice call allowing the Ghost terra Pokémon! I wish you the best of luck :)
I LOVE the fire type generally, it's one of my favorites, and I LOVE playing mono fire, even before I knew about "challenge runs". Arcanine, Ninetales, Flareon, Rapidash, Typhlosion, quilava!!! I actually love the design of quilava even more than typhlosion. Charizard of course. Houndoom, Entei, Ho-oh, Emboar, Talonflame, Inceroar, Centiskorch, omg Alolan Marowak, Skeledirge, Victini, Chandelure, Volcarona, Salazzle. Chi-Yu. I have no idea how I would choose which 6, If I could access all of them. D/P/P were like "You love fire pokemon? HAHAHHAHAHAHA TOO BAD SUCKS TO BE YOU"
You forgot the if you choose to do mono water in sapphire you can use the box legendary. That sets preeminent rain. Yeah. I also think water is a strong honorable mention for gen 4.
@@chonchjohnch I really don't think that is a problem. The difficulty spike from dealing with stuff that hits you from super effective stab is way more impactful than the difficulty drop from having type advantage.
RBY Normal type is also excellent. You have to do some smart plays for Brock, but have 5 team members before Misty, two of which can be fully evolved. Depending on ruleset, the Safari Zone has some excellent upgrades for you, and at minimum you get the powerhouse of Snorlax. Plus STAB Hyper Beam in Gen 1 makes quick work of most teams, and the great coverage of many Normal types means that Rock or Fighting aren’t really threats to you.
I know I'm a year late, but I want to say it anyway: you're only stuck with Purrloin for the first two gyms in a B/W dark run. you can access part of route 4 before defeating Burgh, allowing you to catch both Scraggy and Sandile!
A Grass Monotype of Ruby was quite possibly the hardest time I've ever had in Pokemon. If Steven's Metagross got the Attack buff from Meteor Mash, he just won.
I have yet to do a monotype run in most games but for gen 1 specifically I had a blast with Normal. Sure, Brock is kinda bad but otherwise the fact special is a single stat in gen 1, on top of the insane type coverage certain normal type mons have, made the team unstoppable. Catching chansey, tauros and kangaskhan was awful though.
Also, the best game to do any monotype run, in my opinion, (or, at least, up to the 3ds, since I don't have a switch) is pokemon X, since you can get a pokemon of every type before the second gym
A couple years ago I played my first mono type run, a Ground run with Platinum. I decided that type because I noticed that I basically never used it in any game, save for the occasional starter mon And omg I used the exact same team you described for Diamond and Pearl 😂 I mean, they’re the best so it makes sense, but I still found it funny to see the same ones mentioned
I think it would be great if you make an overview of each monotype of each game, where you goes into the choices available and some of it challenge. You can also split it into parts for each gen where each part introduce a couple type, sorted into simple, complex, or outright impossible (Water/Rock/Fire for gen 4 for example).
12:35 I know they're not -good- pokemon, but fire, water, and grass all have a second member available before the first gym in Gen 5. The pan trio. They're even specifically recommended as a way to cover your weakness for the first gym.
I would love to do some monotype runs in the future, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Ground is my favorite type, but I've had ideas for monotype runs with plenty of different types (I actually have a list): Ground - Platinum, BW, XY, ORAS Psychic - XY Ice - XY, SwSh Steel - DPPt, BDSP Electric - SV Water - Any of them
Bug can be a fun monotype, it generally has a wide spread of secondary typing and is generally considered weak so it will give you a challenge. HGSS and DPPt are both great games to do a "bug catcher challenge" in because they have such a wide array of options. (Mainly boosted by the honey/headbutt trees)
Just finished an Dark Type run on Black 2, going to do Dark Type on White soon. Interesting seeing this video pop up, lol. Now waiting for part 2 now, let see how it changed later down the line, hmm?
About gen 3 : the grass type could have been the runner up, you get sceptile, ludicolo, shiftree (with bonus xp), breloom even before the first gym. Add tropius next (right at the moment you get fly), and the grass type fossil and you get excellent coverage, and a very fun team for a game filled with water types !
I love to see monotype getting attention. ❤ See, a big problem I have with Nuzlockes is that they're overrated. It's like the only challenge that gets real attention, and with Let's Plays it can get to the point of Nuzlockes seeming to outnumber _even regular playthroughs._ I don't even think they're the amazing way to make the game harder that people sell them as. I tried to commit to a Nuzlocke three times, and I always quit because instead of harder, the game just felt a lot *more tedious.* It feels like you spend a lot more energy doing damage control than actually playing through the game. (I know grinding is inherent to Pokémon, but it feels different to grind your team as a whole because you're falling behind, or to grind a fresh catch who might be like 7 levels short, compared to grinding one Pokémon who could be 20 levels too low because they're the best replacement for whoever died; notice I put the focus on spent _energy_ and not spent time). The first encounter rule also seems superfluous to me. "One catch per area" that could be taken at will would already get the limitation going, whereas the first encounter rule can often upset the luck to skill ratio too much. I'm just upset that this "advertised as better than it is" challenge is everywhere when many much better gimmick runs exist that no one gives the time of day.
I love Monotype runs. I would argue that best is very subjective and by that you mean easiest or most effective. But that doesn't necessarily make the most fun for the actual playthrough. Types with wide movepools and more than 10 Pokemon to choose from aren't exactly fun and get boring halfway through. Some of my favorite runs are Bug in Yellow or Crystal, Fire in Blue, or Fighting in Yellow. Most rulesets I've seen through the years require the type to be there by the 2nd gym and have to solo until that point with your starter, but I agree a fun run will have at least one Pokemon by the first gym and ideally 3 Pokemon by the 2nd gym. I also avoid using something like Charmeleon against Surge in a mono flying run.
My favorite type overall is Ghost, which was weirdly hard in White. My favorite mono type I’ve done was bug in Y, as I was destroying my friend’s water type run he was doing at the same time.
I've now done several monotype runs, pretty much my only rule is only one per particular game. For example I've done alpha sapphire, but can still do both sapphire and omega ruby but not another alpha sapphire These are the ones I've done: Bug in Sword, Fighting in Scarlet, Grass in Alpha Sapphire, Water in Arceus, Fairy in Sun, Psychic in Crystal, Poison in Leaf green, Normal in Let's Go Eevee, Fire in Y. So halfway done with the types
My favorite type is and will always be grass type. Not very good competitively, but fun to use. Highly underestimated. My best moment was my Jumpluff putting a Primal Groudon and Darkrai to sleep after out speeding them, only for my opponents to rage quit.
it should be mentioned that grass does somewhat better in sapphire over ruby, but not by much to knock water from the number 1 spot, in ruby, water is a no brainer, in sapphire, an argument could be made for grass.
Kinda wish you'd touched on bw2, since they're sequels rather than alternative versions. But considering most of the gyms are the same, and you now get riolu before the first gym, it's probably still fighting
Man, the ghost-types were done dirty in gen1 and the remake games (at least the gen3 remakes). I mean, Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar have effectively the same learnsets (a few moves changed here and there, but mostly the same), they're supposed to be the main foil to the psychic type, but aren't due to a programming error or something, and what's more, they're not even pure ghost-types, instead being a mix of ghost and poison!
I just did a Normal monotype run for Omega Ruby. The first gym is annoying but if you can get a whismur going with 3-4 stacks of echoed voice everything just melts :)
Fighting is probably easier for gen 4 but I did a ground monorun is platinum which was super fun and challenging in the best way. Especially getting gibble early game. The ice gym and Cynthia are fun to work through and you get to use really fun mons
It was in platinum, so maybe a bit different, but I actually did a ground playthrough a while back and ..... it was miserable. First off, a lot of your movepool tends to be pretty inaccurate. Mud bomb, muddy water, rock blast, etc. Secondly, I didn't even realize the sheer amount of grass, water, and flying types in these games until that playthrough. It was unnecessarily arduous and I had to slow grind through the whole thing. Sure you have good matchups against most of the big name battles, and getting to use garchomp is an instant win by itself, but just traversing routes and fighting trainers for xp was so bad.
I'd love to see a follow up for the WORST mono type for each gen, too. Those might make more interesting (?) challenge runs

I really like the concept :)
Most Pokemon weights make no sense. All the birds are too heavy to fly and all the gigantic Pokemon like Onix are way too light.
Monotype runs are my favorite way to play! Id love to see an accompanying "worst/hardest monotypes per game" too
Thanks for this, as someone who has done quite a few monotype runs on twitch, bringing any attention to it is great.
Most rulesets I've seen are having the Pokemon by the 2nd gym or hack/trade in the first available of that type to the start.
Truly a stacked type in S/V. Annihilape is just stupid good.
my boy macargojoe trying his best to prove this list wrong and making sure you can fail with anything, fucking love the dude
I think you should include third versions and remakes in the follow up video, but only if the best type differs from the original game y'know?
For Gen 2, you can also use Phanpu before the first gym! You’re able to go to route 43 (or 34? I can never remember) straight from the first route, and it’s a really bulky powerhouse even before it gets to Donphan!
Crystal only though
It’s a super tough tossup between Fighting and Ground tbh. As I was editing I questioned if I made the wrong choice 😂 And thanks for the kind words!
i never played past gen 2 but fun watch. can't wait for part 2
monotype is currently probably the most popular type of nuzlocke that people are doing on youtube. how many pokemon and where do you get them, especially if you need to get one critter through a couple of gyms. how to beat trainers that you're weak to. in some games you need to distribute tms or figure out which of them have their own stab moves. but you don't have to do it as a nuzlocke.
Use the rule of cool. In Scarlet, it's possible to have a team of exclusively new dual-typed Fighting-types.
I personally love monotype runs. I'm not a huge challenge run person, but this seems like a nice way to add a little challenge, forcing me to use pokemon I normally wouldn't consider, while still getting the thrill of team building, which is the best part of pokemon for me.
0:58
I love grass.
I love monotype runs. That’s the only way I replay the games, it’s just so much fun. And it makes me feel like gym leader haha
leaving a comment to boost the algorithm! my favorite type is normal, especially the earlier gen pink ones. we just dont get many pinkies anymore since fairy type was added
If you could get a pidove before the first gym, a flying type run would be a lot of fun
The biggest challenges were Lenora and Skyla because I played with level caps.
i feel like water type is always at least second because you can just catch a gyarados in every game pretty early.
I've been doing monotype runs for years, it's a lot of fun because they force you to use species you otherwise wouldn't to fill coverage gaps in your team. Of course, I only started recording them recently, but that's another story entirely.
Love your videos the “this guy stinks” part was really funny 😆 fairy is my favorite type so maybe Primarina will get a shoutout in your part 2 🙌
I’m actually looking into trying this. The only type I’ve done monotype runs with are dragons. Love dragons lol
I love montype runs combined with some other challenges like you can slightly alter nuzlocke rules to get a pretty enjoyable challenging playthrough.
When I was little I started doing mono Water runs because I loved the Water types so much and now that’s all I can do because I constantly forget the weaknesses and resistances of the other types, so looks like I’m sticking with Water forever
amazing video, might make my current gen 1 game mono type, have only got bulbasaur so far
You’re so informative and entertaining, I’m glad I found your channel
So yeah, that concludes my TED Talk in favor of the usage of Flying Type ❤️ 🕊️
I love both water and bug types. Both have a good number of Pokemon that I absolutely adore
Loved this, can't wait for part 2!
Coming on Friday!
ShepskyDad: Best Gen 1 monotype is Poison
Me: *_*Loses Red Version Poisonlocke to a Rattata before second gym*_*
I've done a few monolockes (mono runs with permadeath and level caps, basically), I used poison for FireRed (can confirm this works really well, Weezing MVP!) and flying for HeartGold, and also did Normal and Bug lockes in Violet.
I always did these types of challenges as playthroughs after beating the game with a normal run.
To make the games more challenging however. I started doing single type, single evolution pokemon. Zoroark. Mienshao. Lycanroc. Lurantis. That kinda deal. It is a great challenge imo
Nothing makes my brain do the goody good chemicals more than punching my way to victory.
Your doggo has earned a pet! I’m hoping you’ll be generous and give him 2 for me 😂 appreciate the fun content!
Minnor mistake at 14:18 you can get both Sandile and Scraggy before the 3rd gym in th lowest part of the dessert.
I adore monotype runs! Honestly my favorite type of Pokémon challenge.
As for favorite type, definitely water. Probably followed up by grass.
I’m actually doing a ghost monotype in Scarlet right now. Added a few extra rules to keep it interesting though!
Ooooh Ghost monotype in SV seems so fun. Who are you using???
This is the first video of yours I stumble upon! You got a new subscriber! Love the content and I love dogs!
I once did a Grass-Monotype-Run in Black/White which was quite a challenge but it was a ton of fun!
I decided that type because I noticed that I basically never used it in any game, save for the occasional starter mon
And omg I used the exact same team you described for Diamond and Pearl 😂
I mean, they’re the best so it makes sense, but I still found it funny to see the same ones mentioned
Wait, my bad. Forgot it was a dreamyard get. Mixed up gen 6 santalune forest.
I would love to do some monotype runs in the future, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Ground is my favorite type, but I've had ideas for monotype runs with plenty of different types (I actually have a list):
Ground - Platinum, BW, XY, ORAS
Psychic - XY
Ice - XY, SwSh
Steel - DPPt, BDSP
Electric - SV
Water - Any of them
Bug can be a fun monotype, it generally has a wide spread of secondary typing and is generally considered weak so it will give you a challenge.
It sounds like normal type run is a solid choice for monotype runs in any Pokémon game.
Flying type was dope for 1st gen too, Pidgeot, Charizard, aerodactyl, Garados, Dragonite, Golbat, Dodrio, Fearow, Scyther
About gen 3 : the grass type could have been the runner up, you get sceptile, ludicolo, shiftree (with bonus xp), breloom even before the first gym.
Add tropius next (right at the moment you get fly), and the grass type fossil and you get excellent coverage, and a very fun team for a game filled with water types !
actually for black and white the water fire and grass type all have 2 options before the first gym, the starters and the monkeys
I love to see monotype getting attention. ❤
See, a big problem I have with Nuzlockes is that they're overrated. It's like the only challenge that gets real attention, and with Let's Plays it can get to the point of Nuzlockes seeming to outnumber _even regular playthroughs._
I don't even think they're the amazing way to make the game harder that people sell them as.
I love doing monotype runs! I played through Sword with Bug and Scarlet with Rock
The only challenge I've ever done myself is a bug-only run in Sword. And that was a ton of fun. I may do something similar again at some point
Great video! But I only play with grass team. I also battle online with just grass. 😬
My favorite type overall is Ghost, which was weirdly hard in White. My favorite mono type I’ve done was bug in Y, as I was destroying my friend’s water type run he was doing at the same time.
I've now done several monotype runs, pretty much my only rule is only one per particular game. For example I've done alpha sapphire, but can still do both sapphire and omega ruby but not another alpha sapphire
These are the ones I've done: Bug in Sword, Fighting in Scarlet, Grass in Alpha Sapphire, Water in Arceus, Fairy in Sun, Psychic in Crystal, Poison in Leaf green, Normal in Let's Go Eevee, Fire in Y. So halfway done with the types
Played a dark type monotype run in black and white and had the most fun that ive had in a while playing a pokemon game
My bug type run of Leaf Green. Oh boy, needed a level 100 Beedrill to beat the elite four.
Kinda wish you'd touched on bw2, since they're sequels rather than alternative versions. But considering most of the gyms are the same, and you now get riolu before the first gym, it's probably still fighting
Thankfully I stopped part 1 at BW so it isn’t outside the realm of possibility :)
Can you do "best game for each monotype" as well?
