I’d recommend covering the Poison Type next. Partly because I started on my own remake of Emerald Gyms and I though replacing the Iconic Fire-Type gym with a Poison-Type gym would good idea. My though behind the Poison-Type is that it’s generally disliked. From it’s implication, effects on our own Pokémon, and the design of the Pokémon; Poison-Types are considered “bad”. My idea is to reverse that idea by showing that while some are created from Human waste(Grimer/Muk, Koffing/Wheezing, and Gulpin/Swallot) that some are actually naturally occurring(Zubat line, Seviper, Tentacool/Tentacruel). My Poison-Type gym would actually feature all kinds of trainers: Young, Old, New, Experts, Hikers, Swimmers. The point was that the gym trainers were regular people working at clearing the perception of Poison-Type Pokémon. With the Gym Leader being the founder of the effort; being an older gentleman with lots of experience to contrast RSE’s Flanery who’s young and starts not knowing her place. Anyways, this was my reason for nominating Poison-Types for the Next Video. Plus I wanted to see a comment in video referencing all the Bug-Types who have Poison-Type moves.
Honestly, I don't think the perfect Bug gym leader can exist without Shedinja. It's the perfect knowledge check for the Gym test: did you remember the type chart? No? Well, better come back when you do.
The problem is: toxic or will o wisp, any hazard, mold breaker, ghost or dark moves. Even without knowing the type chart, unless it is a first gym (cant be, it has 6 fully evolved mons) shedinja is not that good to put against a team. Is "good" in competitive, but I think its not necessary
@@faccio_coseshedinja is definitely infinitely worse in competitive. in normal play, unless you’re specifically planning for it, shedinja is going to be a type check. nobody is running hazards in a normal gameplay, toxic has pretty limited distribution, and if you have will’o wisp, you probably have a fire type attack anyways.
“Who would you use on a Bug-type team?” You pretty much hit the nail on the head with your picks, I have nothing to change…except Shedinja. It’s not a bad pick, but it’s a bit of a risk. I think what I would do instead is put Araquanid in its spot and make the lead something fast that can also set up a hazard, like Ribombee. A Ribombee with Pollen Puff (doubles) / Bug Buzz (singles), Alluring Voice (doubles) / Moonblast (singles), Sticky Web, and Protect with a Focus Sash and Shield Dust would make for an interesting lead, all things considered.
Ribombee was one of the ones I really wanted to fit on the team. It would have been great at a fast Special Attacker, but I had too many good options… and Shedinja lol
Shedinja in a bug gym is the dumbest thing because there's a guarantee that the challenger will bring multiple super-effective dark, ghost, fire, flying and rock especially those last 3 and with all of them either being popular or easy to obtain types in playthroughs (fire types can be your starter, flying&rock types can be obtained super early and for dark&ghost it depends on the game) so shedinja is literally a waste of space.
@@shepskydad Another point against Shedinja taking up a team slot is one of your own arguments: Araquanid to handle Fire types. Kind of harder to swallow when it is sent out as a lead Pokémon, and you're prepared to sacrifice its anti-Fire type status for the potential Uno Reverse Card of Mirror Coat. So having Araquanid be a middle Pokémon would help a lot.
shedinja is also a hard win condition on any team it's on. if you deal with all the types that threaten it and shedinja is your last pokemon, it doesn't really matter how many pokemon your opponent has the fight is just over. shedinja is always on a team under the assumption your opponent doesn't know you have it, since most people aren't looking up what gym leaders are using during their first playthroughs shedinja could potential give players a ton of grief
@@Tomy_Lightning "If they are properly prepared" is important here, so what if it makes the gym leader easier to beat for the smart trainers. If someone walks into the gym with tons of rock/flying/water types as well as stealth rocks then they did their prep and deserve it. If someone doesn't have enough prep and tries to brute force their way through with just strong STAB or high levels then shedinja will bring them a rude awakening. This is a gym leader team not a competitive monotype team.
I die with you on that hill of: "Flygon should've been a Bug-Type". I also die on the hill: "The type chart between Bug and Fairy should've been completely reversed". Love your series so far.👍
No to the latter, I think they should've just been neutral to each other. Fairy has the right weaknesses, Poison and Steel had the most useless type advantages in the game and really needed to be the exclusive weaknesses for Fairy to make themselves useful. Poison's only weakness was Grass and there's 4 other types good against it which offer even more type advantages. Meanwhile Steel is only good against Rock and Ice, which also have a multitude of weaknesses including Fighting which covers both plus more. Bug's type advantages aren't great either but at least they have a fairly unique combination of them that could make them useful in certain circumstances (primarily for Grass/Psychic, Grass/Dark, and Psychic/Dark types). But with Poison and Steel, all of their weaknesses are better covered by other types. Why use a Poison type against Grass rather than a Fire, Flying, Ice, or yes, a Bug type (would also be very bad for Grass/Fairy as that would give it 2 quad weaknesses and not really help Poison as much)? Why use a Steel type against Rock and Ice rather than a Fighting type or a combination of other more useful types like Fire, Ground, or Water types? Poison and Steel really needed an offensive niche, Fairy was the perfect opportunity to give them one.
@@eclipse5708 Guess I'll really die on that hill, but before I do so... What's your opinion on the Idea to make the Ice-Type Immune to itself? (in addition to giving that type a reasonable amount of resistances that are commonly discussed for it)
@@amigomorton5193 Immunity to itself seems rather pointless, I think just giving it more resistances would suffice. It'd be great if it could resist Ground and Dragon I think.
I feel like Rock should be your next pick for a video, since along with Normal and Bug its most often a early gym in a region. I am surprised Scolipede didn't get an honorable mention at least, as Speed Boost into BP is insane.
I'll never forget when GF decided to add a whole new freaking type to solve the Dark-Ghost zero weaknesses problem, rather than slightly improving the Bug type by simply making it neutral against Ghost, which for the life of me I can't understand (seriously, for what kind of lore reason should ghosts resist insects??)
Fairy weren't made solely to deal with that one issue but that of Dark, Dragon and Fighting types becoming REALLY strong in the last 2 generation to be the point of being problematic Which is extremely weird then that they also made Fairy be resistant to Bug. I can't understand it. Personally I would have had the two types be neutral to each other, or better yet have Bug be SE against Fairy as if they are the Fae's natural predators (and have Ice be resistant to Fairy for game balance and also, I think it thematically works well, both because Ice looks to be the "anti magic" type with this set up and also because Fairy use a lot of light based attacks and Ice is very good at deflecting light)
Aparently it is because ghosts are more scary thank bugs, the same razón because bug Is stromg against psychic but honestly...Is quite the weak argument for it
I'm pretty sure that Fairy was added because because people were stacking dragon types on their teams who basically didn't have counters outside of other dragon types. Because at the time ice types sucked so it was kinda like gen1 with bug types being too weak to keep psychic types in check.
Fairy was more so made to deal with the Dragons than Dark/Ghost types (since they were the ones causing actual problems, in fact I’m pretty sure Sableye and Spiritomb never did much in competitive play in the first place), Dark and Fighting types were also quite good so they were also added on. Do agree it’s dumb that Fairy resists Bug though, the only reason I can think of is probably U-Turn.
You know, you could give a Bug type Gym Leader Flygon anyway. If Lance's "Not all dragons are Dragon type" logic applies to him, then it should apply to every type specialist. And Flygon may not be a Bug type, but it's undoubtedly a bug. I even considered it for my Monotype Bug Team in Pokémon Sapphire, but I'm content with the Pokémon I have now so I decided to not get one in the end.
The only change I would make is swapping Vikavolt out for a Galvantula, since Galvantula would bring in a fast boi for the team, could also do Sticky Web if Araquanid gets taken out early, and can make use of its Coumpound Eyes ability which feels very bug-themed
I would put dustox (gen 3 poison moth) on mine because of the moves toxic which badly poisons, and venoshock which doubles in power if the target is poisoned. I had dustox in my omega ruby party until the final gym.
I think that Forretress was definitely overlooked here. With so many pivots using switch moves, being able to switch into a reliable wall is definitely appreciated. Forretress also has access to spikes, rapid spin, AND stealth rock, letting you get in the important entry hazards on one mon, and utilise it for other things than just dealing with hazards. With a rapid spinner, you could also deal with stealth rock, giving Volcarona support, and letting it choose life orb or a gem, instead of boots.
The amount of puns you've put in this video in a natural way while still being informative and nice to listen to is legitimately impressive. I also love the choices you made! Not striving for the best mono-type-team one could build, but rather focusing on a theme and it being for a gym leader. And as a huge fan of both Volcarona (best bug) and Shedinja I highly approve of both of their inclusions. For the next type, I'd like to suggest either ghost or fire. Keep up the good work!
As a diehard Butterfree supporter, having it in a thumbnail of a wolfey video and it getting even the tiniest spotlight has skyrocketed my will to use it as often as possible. Even if it's bad in most cases, it will always be my beloved.
he used wolfey wrong though. he used it to refer to competitive players when talking about entry hazards, and wolfey is a professional official format player - which is VGC, a format where entry hazards are rarely used. its in the casual singles games that entry hazards are strong, not on official tournaments
YES BUG,THE BEST TYPE EVER MADE Edit: I love the team, this strategy is realy goog and funny, I would just change a pokemon, why my favorite pokemon is a bug and I can't fight without it on the team, CRUSTLE MY BABY
Hey, good point! You could use that Sturdy ability Crustle’s got to set up some Shell Smash sweeps. Or you could lead it and have it set up Stealth Rocks instead. Plus, some extra help against fire and flying types is bound to be good.
Araquanid, Scizor, Volcarona: 100% agree Heracross is also a definitely good choice, no complaints there For the other two options, here's what I would do: The team lacks speed outside of Sticky Web support, so I'd say Galvantula would be a good choice over Vikavolt. It also gets Sticky Web so you could even have it as a lead, set up webs, and either U-Turn OR Volt Switch out, and add in Compound Eyes Thunder for good measure (this is just a bit weaker than Vikavolt's Thunderbolt). All off of 108 speed, with Compound Eyes being another Bug-type exclusive. I've also run Araquanid as a sticky web pokemon before. With a good matchup and passive healing, it's a good sticky web user. But on a mono-bug team, it's your one and only answer to fire types and a good answer to rocks. I think it's best to leave that job to it, with it maybe being a backup Sticky Web user. Bug types in general are very fragile, meaning Shedinja is definitely a representative of that but maybe it does too good of a job of being a liability. I personally like your Shuckle set better. Either it or Araquanid would use Toxic as you don't need three Sticky Web users. My own honorary mention goes to Lokix and Yanmega, as half of the Tinted Lens users are Bug-type, and one of these Pokemon could go into the team over Heracross. Tinted Lens is also important to the team to cover all of the types that resist Bug that you mentioned.
Yeah I definitely agree here, I did just see a Agility boosted Vikavolt grab some interesting kills, but Galvantula having a somewhat better ability & naturally high speed I’d say is worth looking into Same with the Tinted lense point! I’m a little sour on flame/toxic orb strategies, & with the amount of resistances bugs have it’s fairly likely the opponent would have a few checks already, a Tinted lense mon over Heracross is definitely a good choice
Wow! As a bug pokemon fanatic your comment spoke to me on a spiritual level 😂 Also i must admit I had thought Vikavolt had tragically made one of my faves Galvantula redundant but your comment has made a great case for it
14:06 - I still think including a source of hazard removal would be a solid idea. While rewarding the player for coming in prepared is nice, I think teaching them the importance of not relying on a single move to be a better idea. This would also free up your item on Volcarona, or you could keep the boots just to be extra safe. Now your solid switching core can actually do its thing, and occasionally do cheeky stuff like swap shedninja into an attack it'll be immune to. I consider one of the jobs of a gym leader to be teaching you strategy as you progress. Which is one they usually fall short of, sadly. You should expect your opponents to be aware of their biggest weaknesses and prepared for them. Just winning off of one move isn't really teaching anything more than waltzing into a rock gym and spamming hydro-pump.
I mean, if Speed is a problem, then you could also consider Yanmega, who can have Speed Boost for an Ability, and run STAB Bug Buzz and Air Slash while potentially giving the middle finger to any Rock-Types with Sunny Day/Solarbeam, or you could run Detect to guarantee a +1 Speed Boost, and Tailwind to help your slower partners pick up the pace. It could also run Tinted Lens to ignore "Not Very Effective" damage.
I think you did really well with this team, especially in regards to the stealth rock problem. A gym leader is meant to be challenging, but not unbeatable. My only gripe is obviously shedinja, as I just don't like it mechanically. But it has such a strong thematic presence that it kind of has to be included (It is one of the most well known bug types, I think). The 7 bug type enthusiasts out there (myself included) will surely appreciate you for your work!
Honestly a pretty stacked team, I like it! My only change would obviously be switching out Shedinja. Personally, I'd go with Scolipede. Serves the same roll as a Swords Dance bruiser; even gets Aqua Tail and Earthquake for coverage, and Steel Roller for a ridiculously strong Steel type move that removes Terrain!
Personally, I would’ve saved Shedinja for the Ghost Gym instead. Ghosts really have a big gimmick of… “nuh uh” basically. What with Mimikyu, having 2 immunities in 1 type, Phantom Force, etc. Shedinja seems much more at home on a Ghost Team than a Bug Team.
I would have loved to see Butterfree. With compound eyes sleep powder almost always hits and it also gets quiver dance. You could also run tailwind which would really help the slow bug type. Finally bug buzz for stab and giga drain for recovery and for those rock and ground types. There are a bunch of ways to run butterfree and it’s probably my favorite bug type
Personally wouldve chosen Crustle over Heracross. - Added super effective stab on flying and fire types - physically defensive tank OR Lokix - Speedy boi - Covers Shedinja's risky ghost type weakness - Access to Axe Kick for Dark type coverage - Potential U turner instead of scizor or just both
13:30 Rather than forcing Armaldo into the team purely for rapid spin, I'd imagine having a defog Scizor set would be better. You may need to sacrifice a moveslot, but I bet that's better than having to sacrifice an entire pokemon slot for one move. Maybe something like: Scizor @ Leftovers Ability: Technician - Defog - Swords Dance - Bullet Punch - U-turn Of course, that would mean that your webs would disappear too, but that means the gym leader has a tradeoff and it still rewards players for bringing in Stealth Rocks against a bug team.
I play monotype competitively, and main bug. I feel like this team actually does a pretty good job at providing a challenge in a non competitive setting. I also wasn't surprised much by armaldo, as it held a very important role for bug monos for a very long time
"Name a Bug Ground type" Nincada. Took me two seconds. Bug is my favorite type, and I'm always playing Pokémon games with monotype Bug teams now. I'm currently doing this with Pokémon Sapphire, and well Ninjask was an obvious choice for my team.
Here is what my bug type gym team would have: Araquanid (Lead) Ability: water bubble Item: damp rock Moveset: liquidation, leech life, rain dance, sticky web Araquanid would essentially function as the team’s setter-upper. With fire being a major weakness to bug types, setting up rain dance and following that up with sticky web will be this Pokémon’s main goal. Anything else after that is just gravy on top Scizor Ability: technician Item: occa berry Moveset: x-scissor, bullet punch, u-turn, and toxic With Scizor having a 4x weakness to fire type moves, ideally he would be thrown out onto the field while rain dance is still active. The occa berry would also ensure that any potential fire type attack taken would by halved incase the rain dance ends. This Pokémon’s job is to toxic, do quick damage, then switch to the next Pokémon. Rinse and repeat as needed. Scolipede Ability: speed boost Item: black sludge Moveset: steamroller, cross poison, rock slide, protect Might be a bit cheesy and lame, but with speed boost and protect under scolipede’s belt, its main job would be to gain those speed boosts through stalling and then outspeed all pokemon who enter the battle. Plus, having a reliable answer to flying types with a chance to flinch would make battling this Pokémon quite the annoyance Heracross Ability: moxie Item: coba berry Moveset: mega horn, brick break, smart strike, stone edge Working as the primary physical attacker of the team, heracross has tons of hard hitting moves plus a way to destroy any screen set ups. His biggest weakness would be that 4x weakness to flying, but with the coba berry, this makes him take half damage and survive at least 2 flying type hits. But, heracross would still have some advantage with his high attack and stone edge to deal with flying types Vikavolt Ability: levitate Item: charti berry Moveset: bug buzz, thunderbolt/thunder, dig, energy ball An alternative switch in place of scizor, vikavolt’s main drawback is his speed. However, if rain dance is still present, thunder would easily take out flying types. In top of that, vikavolt also has a way of dealing with fire types through dig and can tackle rock types with energy ball. An overall well-rounded and diverse Pokémon than would be able to handle any challenge thrown its way Volcarona (Ace) Ability: flame body Item: heavy-duty boots Moveset: bug buzz, fiery dance, giga drain, quiver dance Volcarona is a special attacker power house. With great ways to boost its own stats and to deal with its biggest threat of rock types, Volcarona makes for a great ace, especially paired with heavy-duty boots to deal with entry hazards too!
I would have included Golisapod for the switching priority synergy and also because their my favorite bug type. araquanid was a solid choice, though, and I see why you picked it instead.
I recently started playing Ultra Sun for the first time (skipped it initially after Moon burnt me out), and I actually fell in love with Golisopod. My only gripe is how long it takes it to actually learn a water move.
Rock types are probably one of the most underused types in the game, i and probably many others rarely use them ourselves, so that sounds like a good choice.
I would love to see a poison type team. It's by far my most favorite type of the entire series, just because it's built around the concept of slowly but steadily letting the opponent widdle away, whilst you are either pummeling them to a pulp or just waiting till all of their joy is gone.
Scizor, Shedinja, and Volcarona are great choices, but I'd give Scizor a different item to take advantage of U-Turn a bit better, and allow Swords Dance. I'd probably add a status effect mon, I'd probably remove Heracross because there are already three physical mons to put a Compound Eyes Butterfree with Poison Powder, Stun Spore, Giga Drain, and Substitute holding the blunder policy just in case or maybe just a healing item. (this would be the second slot for setup, representing the weak but statusy side of the Bug type while bridging the speed gap with stun spore and wearing the team down once it gets going. Poison Powder and Substitute could be replaced but I'm not sure what with). Can't wait to see you cover the other types!
If you wanted to make a gym team for gen 9 like this, Lurantis could make for an interesting ace, with tera bug Leaf storm plus pollen puff. Speaking of pollen puff this gym battle could be made tougher it was a double battle, in which the gym leader could have their team be made of 2-3 offensive sweepers, paired up with supports with moves like sticky web, pollen puff, first Impression, and u-turn, as well as other good support moves.
The sponsorship! We love to see it Really loving this series so far! Araquanid getting the lead made me so happy, finally my terrifyingly large water spider gets the respect it deserves. No complaints at all about the rest of the list, Shedinja especially deserves to be there just to be it's annoying little self. Even though I fully agree with the choices, I would have loved to also include Ribombee and Galvantula - Ribombee is just so fast, and Shield Dust can trick people who try Fake Out or other secondary effects, and Galvantula's Compound Eyes Thunder + Signal Beam combo could really get under people's skin for the Paralysis + Confusion chance.
Hear me out… Shuckle with contrary, holding lum berry, Moves: rest, shell smash, toxic, infestation This plays into shuckle’s high def and you don’t have to worry about any other stats
My only change would be taking out Heracross and putting in Vespiqueen because that's my favorite Pokemon. Love this team, and finally seeing a tough bug gym load out.
I'm so happy! I'm a mono bug player and you ABSOLUTELY did justice to the bug type! Bug is my favorite type and it makes me sad that so many people write it off :( I wasn't expecting Araquanid to be your lead, but as a gym leader it makes sense lol. Challengers will ABSOLUTELY be leading with a fire or rock type, especially if it's early game. My lead is usually Armaldo or Forretress, and I use Araquanid with a Muscle Band as a heavy hitter lol. Wonderful video! Edit: If you're curious I have 3 main bug type teams: Gen 5, Gen 8, and Gen 9. I avoid using 'mons I don't like, so these may not be optimal teams (no Scizor or Buzzwole lol), but they all function well enough! Gen 5: Armaldo (Battle Armor), Leftovers: Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, Toxic, Earthquake Heracross (Guts), Flame Orb: Facade, Brick Break, Bulk Up, Knock Off Volcarona (Flame Body), Wise Glasses: Quiver Dance, Fiery Dance, Bug Buzz, Giga Drain Galvantula (Compound Eyes), Wise Glasses: Discharge, Energy Ball, Thunderbolt, Volt Switch Vespiquen (Pressure), Flying Gem: U-turn, Attack Order, Acrobatics, Roost Shuckle (Contrary), Rocky Helmet: Gyro Ball, Toxic, Rest, Venoshock Gen 8: Armaldo (Battle Armor), Heavy-Duty Boots: Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, Toxic, Liquidation Araquanid (Water Bubble), Muscle Band: Liquidation, Leech Life, Poison Jab, Waterfall Galvantula (Compound Eyes), Wise Glasses: Discharge, Energy Ball, Thunderbolt, Volt Switch Vespiquen (Pressure), Life Orb: U-turn, Attack Order, Dual Wingbeat, Roost Frosmoth (Shield Dust), Assault Vest: Giga Drain, Ice Beam, Dazzling Gleam, Weather Ball Heracross (Guts), Flame Orb: Facade, Brick Break, Bulk Up, Knock Off Gen 9: Forretress (Sturdy), Leftovers: Stealth Rock, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Rapid Spin Araquanid (Water Bubble), Muscle Band: Liquidation, Leech Life, Poison Jab, Waterfall Galvantula (Compound Eyes), Wise Glasses: Discharge, Energy Ball, Thunderbolt, Volt Switch Vespiquen (Pressure), Life Orb: U-turn, Attack Order, Dual Wingbeat, Roost Frosmoth (Shield Dust), Assault Vest: Giga Drain, Ice Beam, Dazzling Gleam, Weather Ball Slither Wing (Protosynthesis), Heavy-Duty Boots: Close Combat, U-turn, Lunge, Morning Sun There's some fancy EV and IV stuff, but i don't think anyone cares. I also had a really, REALLY annoying 6 shuckle team, but that's not exactly a "balanced bug team" lol. I also really like Scolipede and Leavanny, but they weren't great for type coverage and others with similar roles filled the spot better. Rip Scolipede, you carry almost every one of my BW runs 🙏
i think you could’ve included Flygon!! Gym leaders sometimes have a pokemon which isn’t necessarily the type of their gym, but follows the theme and makes sense. Flygon also learns U-turn, so would fit in very well with Vikavolt and Scizor, providing a rock resist
The issue that we're trying to fix here is making a team that well represents the bug type, and a non bug type pokemon would hurt that. Maybe on a standard bug gym leader team it would be cool, but for the purposes of the video it wouldn't work. I do wish flygon was bug/dragon type though
If you wanted to be INCREDIBLY evil what you could do is make a Baton Pass team leading with Ninjask to get speed boosts, set up a bunch of and defensive boosts with moves like Bulk Up to ensure the mon that sets up Swords Dances can do so, then pass all of these boosts to Shedinja and he can go on an absolute TEAR
This is absolutely being said partially due to my love for it, but Lokix on a bug team, especially for a gym leader, is wonderful due to one combination of a move and a (hidden) ability: First Impression and Tinted Lens. Imagine the fear that could be struck into the soul of some kid with a fast rock type. They can't get hit hard, nor for neutral by most things. Then boom, priority stab 90 power move that ignores the resistance comes in to rock their world
Dustox is honestly 1 of my favorite Pokemon. When i was getting into Nuzlockes, i spent a lot of time with Dustox in Emerald. 4x resist to Brawley, gets protect naturally to beat Norman. I love its goofy smile, the Purple really pops. I love him
Some ideas: Dark: playing dirty, using cheap tactics like stall and hazard stack to represent evil Psychic: playing with an array of gimmicks like trick and screens Fighting: as offensive as possible, just full on HO, bombard them with one threat after another
I am obsessed with bug types and always run a mono-bug squad I was really impressed by how perfectly you sumarised what makes bugs good, its all about the bringing your opponent down and then boosting yourseld up. Problem is despite saying this you took 5 all round good fighting bugs and 1 whos a gimmick and dies to weathet conditions, burn, poison, entry hazards or super effective moves. Shuckle to me is an S tier bug and your moveset on him was great! I'd personally have gone Infestation, Toxic, Power Split and rest. Araquanid / Golisopod - Preference Scizor / Escavilier - Normally a preference but for a gym leader I'd lean Scizor Volcarona is the big bad Vikavolt has unfortunately made Galvantula essentially obsolete but both are fun I'd probs take something speedy over Heracross, could be Ninjask, Scolopede or Yanmega. Or a Quiver dance sleeper like Vivillion, Butterfree or Venomoth. Overall great video!
"The bug type is supposed to be annoying and pestilent, so to show that off I made the entire team barring 1 completely bog standard straightforward sweepers"
Yeah, I was hoping it'd be a little buggier. I like the idea of the volt-turn spamming core, but it's a shame he didn't pair it with any first impression users. I'd definitely throw in Golisopod (and maybe a second first impression user like Durant, but then we'd be really fire weak, so maybe not that). Getting constantly faked out and then switched out on would give the feeling of swatting at bugs that you can't reach (emergency exit helps with this too). And someone has to have bug bite. Sure, there's no guarantee that the player will have berries, but if they do they'll get the annoying buggy experience of having their food eaten in front of them.
Not sure you know what a sweeper is. The only thing in this team that would classify as a sweeper is Volcarona. And maybe Shedinja if you’re unprepared. All the other offensive Pokemon are on wallbreaker sets, and Volt-Turn pivot strats are literally as far away from sweeping as you can get for offensive sets.
Great team! I’d personally choose Haydunn’s Vikavolt build: Item: Throat spray - Agility - Bug Buzz - Thunderbolt - Volt Switch The agility covers the speed deficit, Bug Buzz triggers the Throat Spray for a +1 SpA, and then you have a semi fast SpA sweeper with ability to pivot out of situations easily. Pretty nifty!
I really like the concept of the team and it’s really well made, but as an avid bug type defender, I have a few small critiques: 1: The roost set is probably a much better idea on Scizor with bullet punch for it’s main attack and U-turn for getting out quickly 2: Araquanid works way better as a middle Pokemon for the aforementioned fire resist 3: Psychic probably isn’t needed on Volcarona and could be replace with Giga drain to deal with rock types and get some healing too Other than these ideas, this was a really well made team, and represents the type really well
Excellent picks. Scizor and Heracross are classics, the Volt Turn setup shows new players this unique strategy, and the water electric fire trio with Volcarona as the last pick is the cherry on top.
I wish Lokix was on this team, I know he’s not the strongest and we already have a physical attacker. But I adore him with his cheeky strats of moving first with high priority moves
Bug has always been my absolute favorite type. I am very proud of my mono Bug team of Parasect/Leavanny, Volcarona, Araquanid, Galvantula, Scizor & Orbeetle
When I was playing with a bug-type team a while back I put Butterfree on there. Partly out of personal preference and vibes, but the status effects it can dish out were what made me keep it on all the way through the endgame
When I saw this, I was honestly surprised at how similar this team was to my bug team. Like this one, I had a Scizor, Vikavolt, and Volcarona. Same setup and everything. The biggest differences were that I had Ribombee as my webber, while my water was Golisopod with all priority, and instead of Hera, I had an Armaldo with a pinch berry that filled a similar role, alongside being my spinner. I updated it a bit after this video.
been looking forward to the continuation of this series! as promised, here's the team I'd build if I were to be bug type gym leader - Heracross - Scizor - Armaldo - Galvantula - Volcarona - Golisopod
My favourite type! And you included several of my favs - this is a great squad. My personal 6 would be something like: Scolipede, Scizor, Galvantula, Heracross, Frosmoth, Centiskorch - but that's just because it's almost exactly my top 6 all time favs in general rather than for team-building purposes.
I can't wait for the flying type. Every time I think about which type would make the best gym leader I always think of flying because of the sheer versatility with their secondary typing and roster.
i built national dex doubles bug team earlier this year, and i was pretty happy with it. it was definitely built for strength over repping bugs though haha. i used a focus sash pheromosa, wide guard araquanid, rage power dry skin parasect, volcarona, golisopod, and (mega)scizor. parasect was surprising good support, especially with redirecting water moves away from volc.
Compound Eyes is a unique ability to the bug type. I’d include it somewhere. Making moves like Sleep Powder and Hurricane practically 100% accurate. And “annoying”. Butterfree. Vivilon. Gavantula. Etc. Speaking of Gavantula, I’m a sucker for those practically guaranteed Thunders. Although not as powerful on paper as Vikavolt, it is much faster and won’t immediately be pecked by the flying types you’re trying to counter. It’s so slow even your sticky web won’t help. The spider also gets access to Volt Switch/ Sticky Web. Just a thought.
Your decisionmaking is bound to evolve over the course of this series, so if you aren’t already considering it, a wrap-up video at the end where you get to make tweaks and adjustments to the previous videos would be a welcome addition!
I recommend, in place of specifying "legendary, mega, mythical, paradox, Ultra Beast" use "Exotic" as the catch-all. Non-Exotics cover all those things.
Im glad you did Bug Type this video. Its my favorite type. You even have 3 of my faves on here Heracross, Vikavolt, and Scizor (favorite Pokemon). The other two being Ninjask (somehow both cute and cool looking, BST be damned) and Leavanny (mad respect for it because somehow it was my MVP during a ROM hack I played). Can't wait to see which is the next type you do this for.
I adore this bug gym team! Seeing Flygon get name dropped as "should be a bug" was cute, because my all-dragon team in Violet had a Flygon on it. Initially picking each pokemon, I could have SWORN it was a bug type! Still knew u-turn. Also, yes! Volcarona and Scizor! Two of my favorite bugs making the cut...
I ran an all bug team in ORAS and used Masquerain with rain dance, water sport, and scald for fire coverage, the intimidate was also nice to have on a bug team.
i designed a region purely on my interest in making cool bug pokemon. i love many of the designs and think theres a lot of potential for unique mons with how many real bugs there are
OMG I'VE ACTUALLY THOUGHT ABOUT THIS SO MUCH! THANK YOU! I actually staerted with durant instead of araquanid to prevent setup with his extreme speed and good coverage, but I didn't take into account sticky web, that's ingenious. Also, you're not taking into account Vikavolt's terrible speed and vulnerability to fire damage. For my team, Vikavolt was my ace, and he followed a baton-passing ninjask to increase his speed, as well as an Occa berry to negate his fire type weakness. I also gave it flash cannon as a fourth move for more coverage but volt switch is a good idea. Great video!
Please do Dark type next, they're my favorite type. 🥹 Fun fact: Dark type is the only type to have secondary effects on ALL their attacking moves, so making use of that could be a great idea for a gym leader. 🖤
these are some great picks! and i fully agree with your logic that if they bring stealth rock they prepared for the gym battle excited for the next videos!
Loved it, a solid and memorable team that does not get run over. Exactly what I want to see from this series. Hmmm, I think Poison or ground/rock could use some more love
See shuckle with contrary and shell smash? Turns it into an amazing tank. Give it leftovers as the item, moves as Shell smash, rest, infestation, and the fourth move can be any sort of hazard like spikes, toxic, or sticky web.

Can you NOT bug spray your own perfect Bug gym leader video with that crap?!
L
I would’ve put Butterfree on the team. It’s an iconic Pokemon, and it has won some VGC tournaments.
Do a steel type team
This team is so strong that it actually fails to represent most bug types.

Evrybody try the regional bird of new region and have atleast one fly type move so its usseless having a shedinja
@@trash44gzgigasmashkaza50 you can say that about almost the whole team.
Fun fact bug doesnt have any legendary or mythical pokemon other than genesect
I think a raid bug spray sponsor would be better than raid shadow legends 2:42
I’ve been reaching out but they keep calling me a pest 🙄
No, it would kill the bugs
@@shepskydad Damn that was a good one
@@shepskydadthey've got you nailed.
An actual scam would be better than Raid:Shadow Legends
💀
⛰
@@amigomorton5193 No idea what these emojis mean.
I feel like Rock should be your next pick for a video, since along with Normal and Bug its most often a early gym in a region. I am surprised Scolipede didn't get an honorable mention at least, as Speed Boost into BP is insane.
Speed Boost is a hidden ability though
I agree. Justice for my dear Scolipede ❤️
@@brilliant_Potato If moves and items no longer around are allowed in this hypothetical I don't see why hidden abilities can't
I’m predicting that this is the one team which has Stealth Rock (or even full hazard stack lmao)
@@testerwulf3357 He literally said he's purposefully avoiding hidden abilities
I'll never forget when GF decided to add a whole new freaking type to solve the Dark-Ghost zero weaknesses problem, rather than slightly improving the Bug type by simply making it neutral against Ghost, which for the life of me I can't understand (seriously, for what kind of lore reason should ghosts resist insects??)
Fairy weren't made solely to deal with that one issue but that of Dark, Dragon and Fighting types becoming REALLY strong in the last 2 generation to be the point of being problematic
Which is extremely weird then that they also made Fairy be resistant to Bug.
I've never played Pokemon so I thought you meant girlfriend and was very confused
I appreciate the insight! I think of how Volkner’s or Raihan’s team has some variation like that. Good for me to keep in mind!
@@shepskydad Yes something like that.
Aaron uses a Flygon as a Bug-type specialist in his second rematch in BDSP 🙂
same thing with a flying type team that has levitate pokemon
@@ABagOfIce Yeah so my point stands.
The only change I would make is swapping Vikavolt out for a Galvantula, since Galvantula would bring in a fast boi for the team, could also do Sticky Web if Araquanid gets taken out early, and can make use of its Coumpound Eyes ability which feels very bug-themed
My bug gym would just be the bugs from gen 5. All of them are awesome, and started the trend of bugs “consistently” being good.
Preach brother, it's my gigantamax main back in S&S, sorry urshifu
he used wolfey wrong though. he used it to refer to competitive players when talking about entry hazards, and wolfey is a professional official format player - which is VGC, a format where entry hazards are rarely used. its in the casual singles games that entry hazards are strong, not on official tournaments
I wish that happened to me, but unfortunately my fave is Ledian

Hey, good point! You could use that Sturdy ability Crustle’s got to set up some Shell Smash sweeps. Or you could lead it and have it set up Stealth Rocks instead. Plus, some extra help against fire and flying types is bound to be good.
I assume it'll be on the rock team instead tho.

Agreed
Yeah idc if anyone hates on bug types I would still love them
Appreciate the kind words
Araquanid, Scizor, Volcarona: 100% agree
Heracross is also a definitely good choice, no complaints there
For the other two options, here's what I would do:
The team lacks speed outside of Sticky Web support, so I'd say Galvantula would be a good choice over Vikavolt.
Yeah I definitely agree here, I did just see a Agility boosted Vikavolt grab some interesting kills, but Galvantula having a somewhat better ability & naturally high speed I’d say is worth looking into
Same with the Tinted lense point! I’m a little sour on flame/toxic orb strategies, & with the amount of resistances bugs have it’s fairly likely the opponent would have a few checks already, a Tinted lense mon over Heracross is definitely a good choice
Wow! As a bug pokemon fanatic your comment spoke to me on a spiritual level 😂
Also i must admit I had thought Vikavolt had tragically made one of my faves Galvantula redundant but your comment has made a great case for it
Yeah, Galv and a Tinted Lens user were the big misses here for sure
Araquanid has sticky web
As someone with a biased opinion because Joltik is my favorite pokemon, I agree. Love Galvantula.
Yeah Butterfree instead of Shedinja would have been great, the team lacks a real bug type annoyer
vivillion also gets compoud eyes, qd, and sleep powder, but is also faster and gets hurricane so thats the better option
Personally wouldve chosen Crustle over Heracross.
- Added super effective stab on flying and fire types
- physically defensive tank
OR
Lokix
- Speedy boi
- Covers Shedinja's risky ghost type weakness
- Access to Axe Kick for Dark type coverage
- Potential U turner instead of scizor or just both
I kinda hope Lokix at the very least makes it into the honorable mentions for the Dark video. Being an antihero is very fitting of the type I'd say.
Insecting your fleas into inspecting your pleas is fire
16:58 that stupid face gets me every time
My wishlist for Bugs:
1. Neutral damage to Ghost
2. Resist Fairy (mutual resistance)
3. Priority when using tag out moves
13:30 Rather than forcing Armaldo into the team purely for rapid spin, I'd imagine having a defog Scizor set would be better. You may need to sacrifice a moveslot, but I bet that's better than having to sacrifice an entire pokemon slot for one move.
Maybe something like:
Scizor @ Leftovers
Ability: Technician
- Defog
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- U-turn
Of course, that would mean that your webs would disappear too, but that means the gym leader has a tradeoff and it still rewards players for bringing in Stealth Rocks against a bug team.
I play monotype competitively, and main bug. I feel like this team actually does a pretty good job at providing a challenge in a non competitive setting. I also wasn't surprised much by armaldo, as it held a very important role for bug monos for a very long time
"Name a Bug Ground type"
Nincada. Took me two seconds.
Bug is my favorite type, and I'm always playing Pokémon games with monotype Bug teams now. I'm currently doing this with Pokémon Sapphire, and well Ninjask was an obvious choice for my team.
You’re faster than I am. I zoned out for 10 seconds trying to think of one lol
@@shepskydad Yeah but as I said bug is my favorite type so I know a lot about it.
Lol me too.
Ninjask is the underrated GOAT.
@@MadMalMan I dunno I feel like it's pretty well respected for its great speed.
Here is what my bug type gym team would have:
Araquanid (Lead)
Ability: water bubble
Item: damp rock
Moveset: liquidation, leech life, rain dance, sticky web
Araquanid would essentially function as the team’s setter-upper. With fire being a major weakness to bug types, setting up rain dance and following that up with sticky web will be this Pokémon’s main goal. Anything else after that is just gravy on top
Scizor
Ability: technician
Item: occa berry
Moveset: x-scissor, bullet punch, u-turn, and toxic
With Scizor having a 4x weakness to fire type moves, ideally he would be thrown out onto the field while rain dance is still active. The occa berry would also ensure that any potential fire type attack taken would by halved incase the rain dance ends. This Pokémon’s job is to toxic, do quick damage, then switch to the next Pokémon. Rinse and repeat as needed.
Scolipede
Ability: speed boost
Item: black sludge
Moveset: steamroller, cross poison, rock slide, protect
Might be a bit cheesy and lame, but with speed boost and protect under scolipede’s belt, its main job would be to gain those speed boosts through stalling and then outspeed all pokemon who enter the battle. Plus, having a reliable answer to flying types with a chance to flinch would make battling this Pokémon quite the annoyance
Heracross
Ability: moxie
Item: coba berry
Moveset: mega horn, brick break, smart strike, stone edge
Working as the primary physical attacker of the team, heracross has tons of hard hitting moves plus a way to destroy any screen set ups. His biggest weakness would be that 4x weakness to flying, but with the coba berry, this makes him take half damage and survive at least 2 flying type hits. But, heracross would still have some advantage with his high attack and stone edge to deal with flying types
Vikavolt
Ability: levitate
Item: charti berry
Moveset: bug buzz, thunderbolt/thunder, dig, energy ball
An alternative switch in place of scizor, vikavolt’s main drawback is his speed. However, if rain dance is still present, thunder would easily take out flying types. In top of that, vikavolt also has a way of dealing with fire types through dig and can tackle rock types with energy ball. An overall well-rounded and diverse Pokémon than would be able to handle any challenge thrown its way
Volcarona (Ace)
Ability: flame body
Item: heavy-duty boots
Moveset: bug buzz, fiery dance, giga drain, quiver dance
Volcarona is a special attacker power house.
0:26 thank u for that vgc reference
Rock types are probably one of the most underused types in the game, i and probably many others rarely use them ourselves, so that sounds like a good choice.
I would love to see a poison type team. It's by far my most favorite type of the entire series, just because it's built around the concept of slowly but steadily letting the opponent widdle away, whilst you are either pummeling them to a pulp or just waiting till all of their joy is gone.
4:43 Mikey!
Hail yeah!
We love to see it
Really loving this series so far!
Hear me out…
Shuckle with contrary, holding lum berry,
Moves: rest, shell smash, toxic, infestation
This plays into shuckle’s high def and you don’t have to worry about any other stats
One Taunt and it's GG
True but it's the same for Shedinja, rocks or sandstorm and it's out. I'd argue taunt is more of a commitment than sandstorm or rocks
@@iliasmamalakis777 so you read the wiki and counter a pokemon. isnt that what people do all the time

There's some fancy EV and IV stuff, but i don't think anyone cares.
Here's a fun set I'd love to give this team: Forretress with an Iron Ball, Sturdy, and the moves Gyro Ball, Body Press, Iron Defense, and Rapid Spin
Truly evil...i like it
kid named taunt:
Can you build a Baton Pass team that works with Pokemon Dumb AI? (the "pick a random move", not the "use a super effecive if available" AI)
Then boom, priority stab 90 power move that ignores the resistance comes in to rock their world
Bro reached Raid level. Enjoy it while it lasts. (The sponsorship I mean)
I wish you had kept Mega Evolutions in the running. Mega-Pinsir is the epitome of "everyone is gangster until the bug starts flying" lmao

Bug is one of my favorite types, so it’s nice for them to get some love
We should all protest for Flygon to be Bug-Dragon; such an awesome pokemon.
It's based off of an Antlion, aka a Sand Dragon or Earth Dragon. Inspiration-based typing trumps Normal-Type-For-Insects.
Dustox is honestly 1 of my favorite Pokemon. When i was getting into Nuzlockes, i spent a lot of time with Dustox in Emerald.
4x resist to Brawley, gets protect naturally to beat Norman.
I love its goofy smile, the Purple really pops. I love him
Some ideas:
Dark: playing dirty, using cheap tactics like stall and hazard stack to represent evil
Psychic: playing with an array of gimmicks like trick and screens
Fighting: as offensive as possible, just full on HO, bombard them with one threat after another
Stall and hazard stack aren't really cheap though, they're just annoying to fight but there are ways to beat them
A Psychic type gym that relies on Trick Room would be a fun, if ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING idea (radomus flashbacks)
@@waaaaaaah "the queen is dominating the board!"
@@elrichardo1337 mfw when "Gardevoir used Psychic! The chess piece slammed forward! The queen is dominating the board!" and atomizes my Toucannon
I love how each member of the team is cool and hold their own weight, and then theres shedinja
I'm today old when i learned Shuckle was a bug type, i may have grown up with Johto but Shuckle being bug is unreal
I am obsessed with bug types and always run a mono-bug squad
I was really impressed by how perfectly you sumarised what makes bugs good, its all about the bringing your opponent down and then boosting yourseld up.
Araquanid / Golisopod - Preference
Scizor / Escavilier - Normally a preference but for a gym leader I'd lean Scizor
Volcarona is the big bad
Vikavolt has unfortunately made Galvantula essentially obsolete but both are fun
I'd probs take something speedy over Heracross, could be Ninjask, Scolopede or Yanmega.
Great team! I’d personally choose Haydunn’s Vikavolt build:
Item: Throat spray
- Agility
- Bug Buzz
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
The agility covers the speed deficit, Bug Buzz triggers the Throat Spray for a +1 SpA, and then you have a semi fast SpA sweeper with ability to pivot out of situations easily. Pretty nifty!
When you decide to do a water team I would strongly recommend looking into Clawitzer
I really like the concept of the team and it’s really well made, but as an avid bug type defender, I have a few small critiques:
1: The roost set is probably a much better idea on Scizor with bullet punch for it’s main attack and U-turn for getting out quickly
2: Araquanid works way better as a middle Pokemon for the aforementioned fire resist
3: Psychic probably isn’t needed on Volcarona and could be replace with Giga drain to deal with rock types and get some healing too
Other than these ideas, this was a really well made team, and represents the type really well
15:01 Why not facade for heracross? It would be boosted by the flame orb, so I would think it would be a nice addition.
I like that this isn't just considering difficulty, but thematic relevance as well.
Nice team you've put together here.
Looking forward to seeing your take on a Poison-type gym.
I am glad you included Snom in the footage. Snom is not a pokemon I would want in the team, but I do love seeing it. Especially with knives! ❤
Would love to see you break down how you’d set up each team as an early, miss and late game option as well.
been looking forward to the continuation of this series!
as promised, here's the team I'd build if I were to be bug type gym leader
- Heracross
- Scizor
- Armaldo
- Galvantula
- Volcarona
- Golisopod
Bug is peak typing along with fighting, dark, poison, water, and normal. Excited to see what’s next
Overjoyed my boi Volcarona made it in
YESSS BUG TYPES!!!!!!! Venomoth and Yanmega are two of my absolute favorite Pokémon bug types really need to be buffed :P
Scyther/Scizor have been favorites of mine since Gens 1 and 2.
i love the mirror coat choice on araquanid. i run that alot too and it catches people off guard a lot
I actually love that you gave Volcarona the heavy duty boots. Volcarona is my favorite bug pokemon.
Another thing i think is holding bug types back is that they don't even have the possiblity to learn moves for coverage from TM's.
Idk what it is but i really like masquerain. Its got nice intimidate, air slash flinches, and some cool coverage like ice beam or surf
i designed a region purely on my interest in making cool bug pokemon. i love many of the designs and think theres a lot of potential for unique mons with how many real bugs there are
I usually don’t comment on things but this series needs to continue, please do not let this series end prematurely
Fantastic! Bug has been my favourite type for the longest time :)
As someone who’s in-game character is canonically a Dark Type centric trainer, I would love to see the Dark Type be represented next!
Please do Dark type next, they're my favorite type. 🥹
Fun fact: Dark type is the only type to have secondary effects on ALL their attacking moves, so making use of that could be a great idea for a gym leader. 🖤
these are some great picks! and i fully agree with your logic that if they bring stealth rock they prepared for the gym battle
excited for the next videos!
As my favorite type, seeing good rep for bug types makes me so happy. Thank you so much
Yay, Heracross! Glad one of my favorite bugs made it on the team!
