  • In Pokémon X and Y, we were introduced to a new type of battle, the Inverse Battle. This battle style reversed all type matchups, and made for some weird changes to the overall balance of the 18 types. In this video I take in depth look at the Inverse Type Chart.

      Would be dope if there was some story involving the Distortion World, Ultra Space, or some other sorta mixed up backwards place where this was just how it worked, though it might be too difficult and confusing for the normal story mode (unless it’s in a game that specifically is meant to be harder than the main ones like Legends Arceus is). Lots of cool, clever, interesting things they could use it for that even add depth to how the Pokémon world works (the Distortion World being all backwards like that would make a lot of sense tbh)

    This video was really hard to wrap my brain around lmao. I think the inverse battles were cool in the "this is completely not even remotely balanced" kind of way. • @shepskydad
      @shepskydad  Рік тому +52

      That would be a great way to branch Gym Leaders off a bit from the norm. Raihan's gym in Sword/Shield was more weather themed than Dragon themed, so branching off more into a strictly doubles gym (regardless of type), inverse gym, or even a stone evolution gym could be cool.

    • @yukiizura
      @yukiizura Рік тому +16

      @@shepskydad I never got as far as Raihan, so knowing he's a weather specialist is really cool! I've always wanted more unique Gyms, it's why part of me kinda likes Diamond/Pearl's Move Type Gyms. I think a compromise could be having Gyms be the regular Type specialist Singles, and then the E4 be things like weather, inverse, Doubles, etc. because they're more experienced trainers who go for "unusual" strategies. I just doubt Gamefreak will ever break away from the mould that much.

    You know if you think about it, there's a completely different direction they could've potentially taken the inverse battle idea. Instead of making not very effective hits super effective and vise versa, they could've reversed individual match-ups between types. This would be the same in many ways (grass still beats fire which beats water), but it would maintain and flip all immunities, so suddenly it's ground types that can't touch electric, and are likewise are immune to flying types. Ice becomes a nightmare to deal with as the only type to resist it is itself, and steel becomes even worse offensively than it already was as it's now resisted by 11 other types.
    Then if you wanted to make things _even more confusing,_ you could do both of these at the same time for a reverse inverse battle. Might seem normal at first now that flipped match-ups are flipped again, until you realize that Steel type is now more broken than it's ever been, because every type it used to resist it can now hit super effectively.

    Back when I was attempting to create a ROM hack before realizing I hated the tools, I wanted to have one of the gyms be comprised of inverse battles (yes it’s possible), with the leader himself wearing every article of clothing backwards and engaging in a double battle with a trick room team. Maybe the music would just be the normal gym theme played in reverse, and all the dialogue would be backwards.

    Good Video, just a few pointers.
    Inverse actually returned briefly as a special format in Gen 7 Battle Spot, the hub where you do random wifi battles with players competitvely.
    Because most Pokemon resist more than they are weak too, Inverse is very hyperoffense meta, with some powerful attackers like Porygon-Z, Latios, and even Ninjask being popular offensive threats. That's not to say defense has no place inverse, however. As Ice is an amazing Defensive type, Chansey + Avalugg form a formidable defensive core.
    Some examples of Pokemon that go from Zero to Hero include Porygon-Z and Regidrago. Because Normal has 0 resistances, that means Porygon-Z can run a scarf or specs set with only one attacking move, Tri Attack, with the remaining moves being Nasty Plot , Trick, and Recover; allowing Porygon-Z to be an offensive and defensive terror. Regidrago is the same: Normally Regidrago is held back by a lack of coverage for Fairy, but with now with only one resistance, Regidrago can easily run a Substitute Dragon Dance set with Outrage and Draco Meteor for the remaining move, since you only need one attacking move since's Dragon's Maw is effectively an Adaptability for Dragon Moves. Dragon + another type is excellent in Inverse; Notably, Dragon/Grass, Dragon/Normal, Dragon/Fire, and Dragon/Electric is unresisted not counting ability immunity. Both Regidrago and Porygon-Z were banned in Inverse due too being too difficult to handle defensively.
    Ability immunity remaines the same, so Volt Absorb Jolteon and Sap Sipper Goodra are immune to Electric and Grass respectively. Types that were originally immune to certain status and field effects remain that way, like Electric to paraylsis and Ghost to trapping.
    Lastly, Smogon has an inverse battle thread: www.smogon.com/forums/threads/inverse.3711013/#:~:text=What%20is%20Inverse%3F,immunities%20become%20super%20effective%20hits.

Especially bug type in this gen 9 meta, almost everything that is considered "good" resist bug to the extent that it feels unfair, Fairy, and Steel are represented in just about every team and to add insult to injury they're often dual types with ghost, fighting and flying that makes them quad resistant like Corviknight, Iron Valiant, Flutter Mane, Gholdengo and the list goes on and on.

    I really enjoyed inverse battles. It was something different and interesting. I would like to see it return with some tweaking. Perhaps the immunities should just stay. It would help balance Normal a bit and would give Steel a much-needed boost.
    I really wanted them to add an Inverse option to the battle tower. You know that if this was introduced in gen 3, it would've been a theme in one of the Battle Frontier facilities. I think, as wacky and imbalanced as it is, it's a fun idea. I'm actually not a huge fan of the battle facilities, but I think they should return AND inverse battles would be a fun option.
    Maybe it should be an option in competitive too (I'm also not into competitive, but I enjoy learning about it). It would be interesting to see the tiers! Probably wildly different from the current ones.

    I think one of the most interesting ways to impliment something like this is an ability. 2 pokemon that are similar in lore or design and have different types, could get inverse type abilities. One for offense, one for defense.
    A type that isn't too good normally, like say, ice and normal, would become quite usable.
    With an "inverted defenses" when hit with a super effective, immune, or not effective move.
    While the other has this offensively, but I suppose the coding for this would be insanely tricky.

    I feel like they COULD bring it back, but like, in a sort of Battle Facility sort of way? Like as an optional post-game thing in a dedicated area. Like Inver's hut but actually government-funded, you get what I'm saying? Also put a dude in the lobby who'll tell players their Pokemon's current weaknesses.

    It's a very interesting concept, wish we have more different ways to battle giving some lesser used pokemon able to shine.
    I feel like they could add some immunity to inverse.
    The regular type chart is son ingrained my head thinking about inverse is giving me a headache 😅
    But 1 immunity I kinda think of is having water types immunity to electric and while hitting them super, since water conducts electricity and I seen some electric power characters getting hurt falling into water like Cole from video game Infamous and I want to say Static Shock cartoon had water hurt him if I recall

    • @shepskydad
      @shepskydad  Рік тому +2

      It would definitely be an interesting way to balance the inverse type chart more. If it were to be a serious meta, adding specific immunities would be good to make it more balanced.
