That bass tone is SO GOOD. If there was any suggestion I could provide, it would be to bring the bass up in the mix a few decibels. It’s too good to be lost in the mix
This is hands down the best video I have found on youtube for metal bass! To the point, easy to understand, and the tone sounds awesome. You deserve more subscribers.
This is a great video. I don't own a bass, but I applied a lot of plugins and settings to my guitar which I transposed down though an amp sim. The results are great to say its improvised with no bass haha.
I usually watch these types videos before I go to work about making better tones from metal. I like the way you demonstrate it in a very thorough way and make it so even I can understand. Thank you so much for taking the time to upload this video is so good at it.
Interesting approach! I am excited to try this. I am not a great bass player so I typically don’t put too much effort into how I produce it. But I’m going to try this and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Finally someone that uses Studio One in a tutorial! It's amazing how similar your method is to mine, but the tones sound WORLDS apart. I use a channel splitter at frequency split at 500hz. Same process but I only need one track for it.
Yeah the channel splitter makes it much easier to do the frequency band splitting. I was just showing it the way in the video so guys can replicate in other DAWs.
Your videos are awesome. Checking out the 11 11 brutal amp now... I have still been using the Neural DSP Nolly Amps, in a similar way that you use this one, but have been wondering if there's anything heavier out there. Cheers.
Great video and well explained, devastating bass sound. Have you used drums libraries? Sound is really nice too and what audio interface do you use? Thanks so much
What a heavy bass sound it is!!! Your explanation is so understandable!!! 😃I am so glad to come to my channel and give me your comment for my songs if you can. Thank you!!!🍕👍
Saludos
Hi Mario. I did a bass neck conversion on my BTB200. So its now 37 inches on the lowest strings. So unfortunately I can do a demo of the original neck with a F0 as I already have it setup with a 170 now on the new 37 inch neck. But I pretty much use the same type of tone and EQ-ing with the lower tuning.
@GaryHiebner I get you bro, and you've crafted a nice tone. I've tried similar but personally feel that it muddies with other distorted tones. Especially at gig volume. Sounds lush for a solo though
Found you in a Facebook group, and I absolutely love your videos! Really appreciate the way you break things down (and the killer riffs are an added bonus!) I'm getting more serious about my home studio set-up, and I'm in the market for a better set of headphones. What would you recommend?
Glad you enjoy the videos. My headphones of choice are the Audio Technicas ATX-M50Xs. I really like their bass response. I track and even mix with them. Been using them for the last 8 years so know them really well. The Beyer Dynamics DT700s are also pretty good
A live option would be something like the Darkglass pedal where you can blend your clean with a saturated tone. Also, BOSS Bass Overdrive also allows you to blend the two.
@@GaryHiebner - I followed the steps you've provided. Goddamit, it works! And it sound awesome! Thanks buddy, YOU RULE! 😈 I even saved it as a template for all the future projects. Hats off, Sir!
@@GaryHiebner - it also brings up another question, if I may. Let's say my computer isn't too strong. To avoid an excessive load for the processor (by loading too many plugins during the recording process) I will record one raw bass track in DAW, then I upload the template with your recommended settings (two tracks with relevant plugins recommended by you) and copy the recorded bass track on those two tracks with all the settings on them? Does it make sense? Or maybe the presence of the compressor DURING the recording process is vital? To be honest - I don't understand how the compressor work, I try to fiddle with the settings, but I hear no difference at all. I've tried so many times, but I just can't learn it. 😞
Hi Gary, The TH3 Guitar Amp Sim. I'm getting frustrated that I can't create that nice clangy metal tone. The effects pedals in Cakewalk are limited. But I guess I need to play around with the amps some more. I can't seem to get that nice deep low end with the EQ either! Regards, Gary 🙂
What a lot people don’t realize is that this type of tone is complete trash at band volume levels. Sounds cool in a low bedroom/studio volume mix. Eardrum shredding otherwise.
This is absolutely not true. There is a few ways You can tune to drop A. I mean, look at Some of the bands. that have used drop A tuning and its not trash And they're probably are a lot more bands out There that have used drop a tuning and you just have not realized it. KORN SLIPKNOT FEAR FACTORY

Thanks. Yeah it probably could of come up slightly in the mix.

This is how I used to always setup my bass tracks, until I got the parallax plugin from neural DSP. Now it’s my go-to bass plugin 90% of the time
Killer tones! Super stoked to see more of my fellow South African Metal Muses on UA-cam!
Fellow South African here! Thanks for the tips!
Thanks man!
II II II II sighting 👀 Great video too man 👊😎
awesome video! thanks so much for the explanation
Always hate it when I find these kinds of videos on my phone with no headphones lol. Saved it for later though! Thanks for the awesome tips
You have to watch bass tobe videos with some nice headphones with good response. Enjoy!

Nice tutorial man! Very helpful... greetings from germany
Glad it was helpful :)
Love your videos! You’re so clear and concise. And I’m a personal fan of Studio One, makes it that much sweeter!
Awesome, glad you're enjoying the videos.
Good 👍🏾 salute from Angola 🇦🇴
Awesome video! Very helpful I always get stuck blending the dirty and clean bass volumes together
It's actually quite a nice tone I like it
Thanks!

Definitely check out the II II II II. Its super brutal. Especially for low tunings. But still retains note clarity
Great video. Thanks.
Great video and well explained, devastating bass sound. Have you used drums libraries? Sound is really nice too and what audio interface do you use? Thanks so much
Thanks so much. Yeah I use Steven Slate Drums and Slate Trigger for drums. And for an audio interface I use the Behringer UMC204. Nothing fancy :)
@@GaryHiebner Yeah I also have the uphoria umc204hd, thanks for info dude
Gosh I just checked and I actually have the UMC404HD. Haha. But yeah the Behringer stuff is great. Good preamps and sounds good
Thanks for the video
Do you bypass the cab in the amp sim? i saw that the mono/stereo was red at 4:37 , i'm using otto audio too.
No you don't bypass the cab on the amp sim. The mono/stereo is red cos the amp sim is in mono mode.

What if i tell you, that distortion-free bass is goated for metal? I like a thick clear tone for the guitars' distortion to lay on
In the end of the day whatever works and services the song. This is jist a suggestion for that distorred bass tone.
@GaryHiebner I get you bro, and you've crafted a nice tone. I've tried similar but personally feel that it muddies with other distorted tones. Especially at gig volume. Sounds lush for a solo though
Hola Gary te escribo de Argentina dónde puedo descargar algunos preset de bajo metal ?
Gosh no idea. I like to male tones from scratch and don't really use presets.
when I eq my distorted bass. the sounds just goes down. is it ok? or still i need to down the volume fader? please reply thank you
Just raise the volume on them after EQ them. So balance the low clean bass sound with the distorted bass track

what kind of pedals can make this sound , i dont have any plugins
But how do you get the sound live?

@@GaryHiebner I have darkglass but haven’t got to hear it live yet
tunning? please speak! very good!
The bass is in Drop A#
Nice one!
So you actually didn't use any distortion plugin, or I'm missing it?
I split the frequencies and add a gained up amp on the higher frequency band. So the distortion is coming from a hi gain amp sim

Ha ha, don't understand any of this as someone whose never recorded. But how would you go about doing this as live sound or practice sound!
A good live alternative is using the BOSS Bass Overdrive. This allows you to split and blend the signal between a dry signal and an overdriven one.
@@GaryHiebner oh nice. I'll have a look into that. Thanks
Cool

Ibanez BTB 200. Nothing fancy

Thanks
lekker bass
damn, heres the day when I cant do this cause im trying to use a real amp
Nothing too fancy just an Ibanez btb tone
