Awesome. I always play with a pick. Can't finger pick all that well and I get more attack and bite using picks. Really works for the sort of tone here. Low clean thumpy bass, mid growl and gank. Great vid man.
First off, really happy to see more Fernandes guitars and basses through your videos, always loved them. And I loved the bass video you made for the URM guys so I am glad you gave us another take on getting that tone! Thank you!
I achieve this by mixing 3 tracks of bass as follows: Track 1. Recorded with a SansAmp RBI preamp that simulates an Ampeg SVT amp, and the signal goes into a SVT IR cabinet. Track 2. I record an uneffected DI and apply a saturation on it. Track 3. Record heavily distorted track by using a guitar distortion pedal such as Fulltone OCD. You blend the three in such a way that you get most of the effected track from Track 1, adding slightly of a DI to fill in the sub frequency range as well as very slightly add a Track 3 which increases the "bite". These are routed into a bus called "Bass Mix" and from that bus I export a "send" into a parallel bus where I apply heavy compression using a compressor known as RNLA from FMR audio, where I squash the bass and blend this as a parallel compression to the Bass Mix. This offers unprecedented control over your bass tone. I do this because bass not always fits in every song equally based on the dynamics, tempo and the expression of the guitar and other instruments like drums. You can then adjust the blending between the 3 tracks to enable the bass to sit in the mix properly.

If you want grear clanky attack but play finger style, you need to attack the string downwards so that you're bouncing the string off the frets when you attack. That gives you really good clanky bite and is tons of fun. If your bass can't do that, lower the action until you can.

love all your info! Very helpful to me as a metal bassist. I wanna say 2 things though: If you haven't tried them yet, give Sadowsky Black Label Steel strings a try. They sound a little bit less bright than DAddario Pro Steels for example but for me, they hardly change their tone. I just love them. Pro Steels I wanted to change after like 2 weeks (not recording, just playing) or 4 weeks at the latest. The Black Labels stay on for months and keep sounding great. And about playing approach: absolutely true that a pick will give you more clank, no question about it. It's not really a big deal to make a bass sound metal when playing fingerstyle though either. What you have to do is adjust your technique for metal (don't play like a pop, funk, whatever player) by not plucking in parallel to the body but hitting towards the body and make the strings bounce off the frets like with slap and of course you have to adjust your bass' setup to match your playing technique. Then it's very simple.

I couldn't find prosteel or Warwick where I live but Markbass energy series have worked pretty well. I don't use the mammoth but I used the same tricks explained in this video in Amplitube and it worked. So, in short: This video changed my life and I get the DANGLE DANGLE tone I was seeking for a long time. thank you man. 😊
One quick update. Seems that I am having hard times to get the clanky tone on my E string while I get it on A string. I get a woody - a bit disturbing sound instead on E string. What could be the reason? Ibanez sgr300 4 strings. Markbass stainless steel. A bit low action like 2-2.5 mm ( tried higher and a bit more lower but its getting worse) any toughts?
Hey now, I play with my fingers in a metal band. Instead of traditional plucking the strings, I do finger slap (a bit like a thumb slap but using index, middle and ring finger). I tap down on the string, at a slight angle and get my dangle dangle from the strings hitting the frets. Using an active Schecter Stiletto Extreme 4: I set the bridge pickup to half open, neck to half open, and crank the active full and volume wide open. I strike right behind the neck pickup. Ironically, I use a pick for mellow chords and clean melodic parts. But hey, we're all different and find different techniques to solve the same problems. If that's not your thing, then listen Kristian. Always great vids.
@@KohleAudioKult It doesn't work as well on passive basses unless you hammer the crap out of the strings. It's how I used to play. The last 20 years I had never played a properly set up bass. Action was always high, never intonated, crackly pots, you name it. I got my 1st active and properly set up bass last year, the Schecter. I can now use a very light touch and get the same clanky dangle. I just turn the amp up 1 notch higher, use 1/3 less force. 15:06 500 Hz is EXACTLY what I remove from my 8-string guitar tone with a EQ in the loop! I like a lot of mids on the amp's preamp, but I remove just the 500 Hz afterwards. It's the single best trick in metal EQ'ing IMHO.
Here's the fun thought, bass brings the bite and attack that the guitar tends to lose with more processing. Might have teach the bass player how to use the pick and fingers at different parts of the string for best results. For instance, closer to the bridge with the pick for faster single notes, or when you want the low end to carry the groove, use a finger nearer the neck.

Instead of traditional plucking the strings, I do finger slap (a bit like a thumb slap but using index, middle and ring finger). I tap down on the string, at a slight angle and get my dangle dangle from the strings hitting the frets.
Using an active Schecter Stiletto Extreme 4:
I set the bridge pickup to half open, neck to half open, and crank the active full and volume wide open. I strike right behind the neck pickup.
Ironically, I use a pick for mellow chords and clean melodic parts. But hey, we're all different and find different techniques to solve the same problems.
If that's not your thing, then listen Kristian. Always great vids.
Slapping is great of course.
If I could have my "dream" engineers record my current band, professionally, it would be you and Glenn Fricker for sure. And Andy Wallace mix it of course.
Thanks Kris, have a wonderful day. I suppose I better go subscribe now. Ha ha ha ;)
Been toying with the idea of buying this plugin for a while now! Just bought it! Prost!
Love the DI tone. Thank you for the tips! Also thanks for the presets on Mammoth.
Great sound Man, thanks and hug from São Paulo 🤘😉🎸
I got Mammoth a month ago and it's amazing. Only bass plugin I need. Awesome video.
Hey mate! Thank you for explaining how you dial the DI in. It seems like it's so basic that everyone skips it. Anyway, thank you for this fundamental that all other guides seems to overlook....
Alright, now I have an EP to re-track the bass 🫠
My pleasure!
Great stuff Mr Kohle! Bought the plugin very soon after I toyed with the demo. Your tips make this plugin sound even better! Dängle on!
Great to hear that! I will! ❤️🍺
Bro your making the most helpful videos for metal, Thank You
Thanks man! Spread the word!
"it's more metal to play with a pick", idk the last Archspire record had one of the best ever captured bass tones and Jared Smith plays with his fingers
There are always exceptions. I also got a great bass tone on the last Aborted records.
But why use your fingers when you can use a hammer?
@@KohleAudioKult what if your fingers ARE hammers?!

@@joaoalcantara6676 that's a funny song name
@@Mikey__R the hard fingerstyle where you’re just slamming the strings down instead of doing rest strokes can get those metal attacks like you would use a pick for alongside thick tones, you might be onto something B)
Awesome information! and what a song, love when the slow melody kicks in... love it!!! I follow you because of URM academy, I am a composer and started as a producer too. Mr, Kohle have become in one of my favourites creative producers, huge inspiration. Best regards from México!
Much love from Germany! Thanks man! Glad you found me.
Thank you, dUg Pinnick.
Amazing bass tone, thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!
Really appreciate you brother. Your really good at doing these videos . Very informative and love your whole vibe man.
Definitely making mixing much easier!
Thanks my German brother! 🤘🏼👹🤘🏼
That's some proper bass tone!! Fckn awesome \m/
Love this video! I think you could do more videos on drum recording, mic choices etc.
Oh yeah! Sure!
@@KohleAudioKult Maybe a beginners mic recording kit for drums? or how to record drums on budget. Anything like that would be cool!
For me it’s all about the playing and the instrument. To get the aggressive grindy tone, I have to use new strings and somewhat low action.
Same here.
Love the fact, that they gave me an update with your IRs since I already purchased it. Huge thanks to aurora dsp and of course to you Kristian. Love your content!
You're welcome! Enjoy!
incredible vid !!! appreciate the education .. thats clear cut, tested n tested, info liil
Goddangle ,thats a nice sounding bass btw!
Anyway great video, learning so much from this channel, keep it up!
If you're a caveman like me and don't understand how to use DAW's, you can get pretty much this exact tone from the Darkglass X pedal. It splits your signal between clean lows and dirty highs and has a built-in compressor
Tbh I haven't heard better DANGLE of the bass than the one on Decapitated's "Organic Hallucinosis", which was played with fingers...
...but Martin Rygiel used to play flamenco on classical guitar when he was a student of his music school :)
Trve! Everyone needs a flamenco bassist!
cool plugin!, yes I thinking the same about clanky tone, new strings and pick! but i use the UAD svt classic for that and now thanks to you ill use the mammoth plugin, sounds pretty sick, thanks!
I lucked out my pod go has ampeg modeling within its parameters. Tasty. Dang dangle indeed.
Mommoth, the Parallax killer. Sounds even better an is way more versatile. Thank U for showing!
Was triggered by "dang*e," but as a guitarist this rly helped me peer into the mind of a bassist.
Kristian is delivering gold...As usual!
As always a great video. i did this with parallax by neural dsp and i got a brutal and great Tone! best channel for recording and producing metal.
Parallax is nice too! I agree.
Very excellent video sir! I don't have the Mammoth plugin but was able to get close ( I think ) using stock plugins from Reaper and freebies from Ignite:
Charvel CHS4
Berhinger Ultra-DI into a Tascam US-1641
Reaper
VST ReaEQ using the stock Basic 11 band Rock Bass setting with a high pass around 80
VST Ignite SHB-1: G7, B5, M9, T7, Bal 6, V6, Deep Bright and Shape on, Mono
VST Ignite NadIR: No settings changes. Orange NT2 IRs from someplace called Zuhause, though I don't remember where I got them from.
JS 3x3 EQ (1-Pole Crossover): LD% 0.9, LGdb -2.1, MD% 0, MGdb 0, HD% 10.3, HGdb 4.5, LMF 240, MHF 1440
VST ReaComp: Thres: -22.8, PC 0, A 16.5, R 205, Auto release on, weird knee on, R 4.48:1, Knee 1.3, LP 1275, HP 74, RMS 5, Wet 0, Dry off, Auto make up on, limit output on
Thank you very much for the video!!
I love the blue!
Good job, good tone, good bang bang.
"Dangle" is exactly the term I used to describe that bass sound :D
"Pick good"
[generally positive mumbling]
"Fingers bad"
[angry dislike noises]
Another great set of strings for lower tuning a four string bass is Rotosound DropZone. They’re stainless steel also.
Brutal defined tone. Nice job 👍
Wooow, just Woooooooow, it's cristal clear explenation to get that FAT sound, thank you very much
15:06 500 Hz is EXACTLY what I remove from my 8-string guitar tone with a EQ in the loop! I like a lot of mids on the amp's preamp, but I remove just the 500 Hz afterwards. It's the single best trick in metal EQ'ing IMHO.
Rule number 666:
500Hz is the enemy of anything metal! 🤪
I love bass now. :D
Geht doch, haha!
@@KohleAudioKult ja :D
is doch total easy :D
Seems to be a great alternative to the parallax! And it has flexible mids! I find myself annoyed by the fact that parallax is not that flexible in the midrange. Cool video! Sweet sounding bass!
As someone who vastly prefers to play pickstyle, I feel vindicated. I think I'm going to reply with "Yes, we all know Steve Harris exists." every time I encounter some fingerstyle elitism from now on.
Wow, i am testing the trail version of the mammoth. Sounds realy cool. Thanks for the vid and greetings from Freiburg! :)
My fingers are quite good at getting that "dängle" thing! Hahahahahaha (great video!)
Great sound Kristian! What about tone: Fully opened or mid-opened? And how to reduce noises?
Thanks! Tone knob or what are you talking about?
Kick ass tone - thanks!
Finally! The meshuggah tone!
I really prefer a clean tone, but I need it dirty for some songs
So Dangle is basically forced fret buzz? Nice. Always kinda knew that deep down (lol) but now I can really hear that on your demo and mix. And then when its run through a mixer or FX you have more to work with.
Man you hit on the nail on the head! That was pretty much everything I was wanting to know about recording bass! The only thing you didn't cover was mic'ing a bas cab that has a horn driver in it, like the Ampeg 410HE (I'msure not another of people would be recordingwith such a cabinet though), but damn good video man!
Thanks man! Just mic the horn and mix it in, haha!
@@KohleAudioKult thats EXACTLY what I was thinking one should do! Thanks man! Now go have a good day/night whatever works!
Great explanations, I will experiment further.
Super nice video! I will try Mammoth (I just download the trial). I may buy it this weekend!
This made my dangle day! From a Spector player :)
Spector makes awesome basses!
@@KohleAudioKult Indeed a very versatile instrument from Clank to round brown :) As Always keep the great vids coming, I have been producing for 20 years and still learn every time I listen to you :)
