NewYear 2020 commitment is to not miss any of Ronnie's harmonica lesson's on youtube! You started this year off with that awesome Global Blues Summit with Jason Ricci, then followed it with that incredible harmonica breathing meditation class! Thanks for all you are doing for us harp'in pilgrims on the winding road to the crossroads. We are lucky to have you for a teacher and inspiring guide! :)
Great licks to put in the toolbox!!!! You can built upon each one of them by adding/ subtracting notes and adding other dynamics and nuances. I can think of endless possibilities Great stuff man. Subscribing.
Hi Ronnie. I've followed your channel for a while now, and you are clearly a very accomplished player. What I liked about this post though (which prompted me to comment) is that you're trying genuinely to see through the lens of a beginner again, offering something ACHIEVABLE (without bending) that still sounds cool enough to reward frustrated learners -- and thereby keep them motivated! It reminded me of a quotation I saw recently about progress in music generally that really hit home with me: "Remember to enjoy where you are at, on the way to where you're going." I'm sure the few simple riffs you've demonstrated here will have made that possible for many new starters. Keep up the good work sir! -- Dave.
I really appreciate your classes on here.. good stuff man. I just started a couple months ago and all these little tips and tricks are quite useful. Thanks!
Just a quick note on the end part, Bo Diddley did the four not riff on I’m a Man, Muddy waters added a note and changed the phrasing slightly on Hoochie Coochie Man and George Thorogood added another note for Bad to the Bone.
respect to you , you explain it like you setting in my mind you are a great teacher amigo ! 10:58 when you fall in love again and again in blues notes 4 got me there
Some of these online harmonica people are good teachers who are organised and deliver well structured harmonica lessons that are easy to follow. Ronnie isn't one of them! Instead he pretty much chats (and often rambles) to the camera, sometimes making it hard to follow and learn. Consequently I didn't take to his lessons at first. However as I progressed and improved on the harmonica I came to appreciate his teaching more and more. He gives some great advice and covers things I've found nowhere else. Hell, it's Ronnie Shellist FGS!!! You have to work to filter out the good stuff from Ronnie's stream-of-consciousness delivery (bless 'im) but there are gems to be found.
Guilty as charged as far as some of my videos (not all) here on UA-cam. I've been known to ramble but I also have some that get right to the point. Here's a question for you. Have you ever taken on of my "paid" classes? No rambling, super structured and organized, notes included and I record every class. I'm guessing that there are plenty of folks who follow me here that can vouch for me.
Hola soy Santos de Uruguay me suscribi a tu canal , porque sos el único que veo que pone sub títulos en español , gracias y espero ver mas tutoriales tuyos saludos !!!
Another awesome video Ronnie! Great job with getting some real top-of-the-line videos out, one after another!! I so appreciate all that you do! Thank you much! :)
Thanks for taking it back to more basics. Very helpful and something suddenly has started to click for me. Still a raw beginner but really enjoying the harp. Thanks and very best wishes Brian.
Dynamics are a much better option than playing at blazing speeds especially when the other guys in the band are playing super fast. Nothing will wear an audience out quicker. I was taught to create a “change of scenery” when others are playing super fast. I want every note I play regardless of the instrument to speak and to connect with the song. Never play fast for the sake of playing g fast. Less is always more.
Does anyone know why Ronnie says the 4 blow is out of key on the I chord in a 12 bar at 3:12? Is it because the 4 blow isn't contained within the notes of the I chord? I thought the 4 blow was in the minor pentatonic (and blues) scale. Are certain notes in those scales more important than others depending on the chord being played?
In 2nd pos. if you hold a 4 draw over the I chord..you're definitely playing a sour note. The 4 blow CAN BE used but more as a passing note on the I chord. That's what I mean.
If the inner soft part of the lip is meant to glide and lubricate movement, how are we supposed to use sandwich style harps? I can play a sp20 or Seydel for hours, but can only play for about 10-15min on a sandwich style... which sucks because there are some great sandwich offerings available!
Couldn't resist the opportunity to answer a question on this Master's channel ! You should be moving the harmonica - if you keep the harmonica in the same place and move your head you won't even be able to reach the holes ( assuming your neck swivels rather than moving laterally .... ) .
@@antreb15 Hi . That's why I replied, I am almost useless myself, which is why I was watching this . It's a lot easier to know what you're supposed to do than it is to actually be able to do it, but there's something about the gobiron that no other instrument has - as you know ....
Wow ! I've just watched this again and I can see why you asked the question . On the warble he is sure moving his head, and calls it a headshake . In general he seems to move his head a lot . I claim that the principle stands - to keep the harmonica in the same position relative to the mouth, you must move the harmonica . Now, I'm not a doctor, but I would also claim that most people can move their hands a lot faster, and with a greater degree of control, than their heads . Perhaps I'm allowing my arthritis to influence my decision ....
Sure you can do that but the tone is different and the flow/phrasing changes. Works but it is very different feel to me. I prefer -2 for this lick. Either way works. . The -2 is a huskier note while 3b is thinner. I prefer 3b for other licks based on the fluidity of the phrasing it can provide.
Nice.thanks. now I'll be bending in no time.good man. My man Ronnie!
Jesus, when slowly add in the draw it's like a light bulb moment as to how to make blues harmonica happen! Best instructional to get started in blues!
This is the best harmonica lesson video on UA-cam.
As a beginner, these are stellar riffs to practice. Especially ones with that pesky 2 hole on C harp.
I like the way you talk about harmonica playing....we need this.... harmonica talk and play... Thank you 😊 🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶
I know it's hard to translate usefulness to accessibility, but as a beginner I appreciate what you did here 👍🏻
Fantastic! Just started Ronnie and love all these.

A very nice fun lesson!!
thanks Mr Shellist!
Muddy and Little Walter used these riffs on "I'm a Man" and "Hoochie Coochie Man".
Super helpful but I wish there were visible tabs as he talks

I’m a Man - Bo Diddley
Mannish Boy - Muddy Waters
And of course Hoochie Coochie Man
Great lesson!!
the tune i was trying to recall was definitely Hoochie Coochie Man
@@Harmonica123 It was Mannish Boy.
@@davevadnais8166 - Both riffs are very similar.
HELLO QUE BUENO QUE AYA TRADUCTOR EN ESPAÑOL SOY CHILE MUY BUENO SALUDOS
Tough for a beginner in my opinion .. a couple yrs of playing the harp , this will make more sense to intermediates . 😊

Are you sure that the Muddy Waters song you're thinking of isn't "Mannish Boy"?
I am new. For me it sure would be nice if you wrote the # of notes you were playing.
Goliath left his harp next to your door
at 13:00 "Mannish Boy" ?
I get dizzy playing it? Does dizziness go over time?
I learned by myself mannish boy
Boss !
Should you be moving your head or the harmonica?

Do you have any lessons on riffs that incorporate holes 6 through 10? i do not yet comprehend how those higher notes fit into my playing
