This story was also brilliantly told in the Ken Burns documentary “The US and the Holocaust”. Americans never learned the bad things about American history and are doomed to repeat them.
is it though? How many people will read her book? How many of those will take notes therefor on how maybe how to counteract fascist tendencies? With something like the southern strategy of the republican party, it seems clear that they already invited fascism into their mids where it can thrive and voters don't really care. The once that actually need to be reached with this, those on the right, how would you get that information to them? Especially considering the polarised media landscape and fringe right wing gone mainstream with fox news, breibart and the sinclair network?

My mom was born in 1921. She passed in 2007. Before she died she told me, "We have been through worse than this before. We always come out of it a better country and a better people." Women and young people give me hope that she was right.
A hung jury is not an acquittal. Prosecutors can retry a case after a hung jury (or after a judge dies). The government decided to drop the charges because of political pressure.
Before the start of the Revolutionary War, nonviolent resistance to England took the form of courts not convicting the colonial merchants of smuggling. Not the same thing as those advocating and preparing for violence, but similar.
In my estimation, Rachel Maddow is one of the brightest lights in all of media. Every time I watch her I benefit and learn from her illuminating stories. Thank you for all your efforts, Rachel.
The US Army personnel responsible for murdering over 500 unarmed, civilian men, women, and children in the village of My Lai were acquitted and pardoned.
And yet, insurrectionists who blamed Trump for inciting them, still support him and believe they are patriots and political prisoners for attending his rally and "touring the Capitol."
That's because the majority of us "good people" fail to react and hold people in power, those whose job it is to write and enforce laws, accountable. It's more than just a jury verdict, it's also about all the corruption throughout the system that good people can stand against together, but do not. Dictators are often first fairly elected by a fearful, ignorant, and passive majority of "good people". But once you let them in with the power over the whole system, they spread like a virus, and it's very hard to get them and their co-conspirators out.
More likely not teaching high school students a Civics class on how democracy works and can be subverted by fascism. If we had that, then maybe McCarthyism would have been seen to be anti-left and anti-reform rather than anti-communism and put down. Who knows how many tragedies in American history since then could have been avoided with Civics teaching us the more people who vote, the less likely extremists can get elected. Instead we got ideas like "my vote doesn't matter," "there's no difference between the candidates," and so on.
Rachel convincingly shows us that history repeats itself in it's worst ways and that the threat to democracy is not new from which we can learn to solve present problems. Thank you, Ravhel
It repeats itself because it is revised. These American Nazis were Jew hating socialists, they were not conservative right wing as Maddow presents them.
I learned this at the library in the 70s. We were never taught about the bad things America did and does still. Education is restricted for a reason in this country.
Can you name a country that does not engage in a "patriotic" teaching of history? Edit: I would argue that education is not restricted but limited. Furthermore anything and everything you would ever want to learn is available right in the palm of your hands. Information is more widely available now than any other time through out history. With a little know how and initiative you can learn anything available and somethings that aren't. The world is literally at your fingertips.
@@unknown5150variable You're suggesting it's not a problem that many or even most US schools don't teach kids about the negatives of American history? Saying the info can be found elsewhere has a very MAGA ring to it.

I still maintain that your comment rings of McCarthyism but am willing to admit that my comment was lazy and not well explained and share some of the blame that I ascribed to you. I can offer a more detailed but admittedly long and probably boring explanation whether you like it or not but which may serve to assure you that I am far from a red tin hat.
I also learned more about History after I left school than what was in school. History is taught by the victors. There is always the rosy side of the picture displayed than clear unvarnished truth no matter what country. However, the way a country deals with its sins compared to others is another matter. The U.S. is sadly failing in this regard. From the Native American atrocities to WWI and WWII on to today,
Pretty much the reason why I call T***p’s most virulent fans Brownshirts. He’s been encouraging them to assault and attack people since he first started his (Brownshirt) rallies in 2015.
Very salient points. After watching, I feel that my relatives and certainly my U.S. schools kind of white-washed WW2 -- that "of course" we were on the side of the Allies, that it was obviously the right thing to do, etc. But remember that the full extent of what was going on in Germany wasn't even known until after the war.
Thank goodness for Rachel Maddow and others like her who bring the truth of American history forward. This should be required study not only for students but for everyone in society. There are never any new stories, just new iterations of the past from which we should all learn.
Here is an easy to understand list which was written decades ago, an introduction, to identify fascism. "14 Characteristics of Fascism" 1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. 2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, and long incarcerations of prisoners 3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists… 4. Supremacy of the Military Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. 5. Rampant Sexism The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation. 6. Controlled Mass Media Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation or by sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Government censorship and secrecy, especially in war time, are very common. 7. Obsession with National Security Fear of hostile foreign powers is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. 8. Religion and Government are Intertwined. Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions. 9. Protection of Corporate Power Protected The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. 10. Suppression of Labor Power Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed . 11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts. 12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations. 13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. 14. Fraudulent Elections Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate, control or deligitimize elections.

My father worked a few days a week as a handyman for a wealthy, old money family. He was asked to take a load to the dump, and being human, sifted through the contents for anything he thought might still be useful. He found gold lapel pins from the 1932 Bund movement that included a white swastika and 32 in a dark triangle in the center. I might add that the swastika had been stepped on and the family served honorably in the war against fascism.

The fact that these people all got off is the reason we are still dealing with this today.
The civil war never ended. The thing is, they have no real plan going forward. They just want to blow everything up.

I can offer a more detailed but admittedly long and probably boring explanation whether you like it or not but which may serve to assure you that I am far from a red tin hat.
They teach only what they want you to know in school therefore anything you learn on you own can be disputed as not accurate.

"14 Characteristics of Fascism"
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, and long incarcerations of prisoners
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists…
4. Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation.
6. Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation or by sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Government censorship and secrecy, especially in war time, are very common.
7. Obsession with National Security
Fear of hostile foreign powers is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
9. Protection of Corporate Power Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Suppression of Labor Power
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed .
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate, control or deligitimize elections.

It’s simple really - ALL men (and women - humans) are created equal. What we do with that fact is on us. We often don’t agree on issue, but that doesn’t mean we find ways to eliminate others. There will be a reconning for hate-filled actions. If not on this earth, then soon 😮
Well said!!
Why don't we hear more of things like this on the news instead of the junk that is of no interest they put on there now.
This is frightening!!!!!
I had to take a seminar class on the Holocaust as part of a liberal arts masters program. We were taught about how America knew what was going on in the concentration camps but was indifferent until they got pulled up on by the Japanese in Pearl Harbor. But we were never taught the depths of anti-semitism that were on American soil and how they basically let American Nazis run around without doing anything.
Charlie Chaplin tried to raise awareness...he got deported for it.
If you want an actual, accurate retelling of the history the Democrats would love to forget, here you go. Exposes the evil of the LEFT...

my, my, my... what a difference 6 days make huh? who's antisemitic now?
I guess I'll read Rachel's book, and yet this kind of American reality is so depressing in the midst of MAGA extremism.
I think the point of her research is that we survived this in the past so we can survive it again. So in a way it's a hopeful message. 🙂
Really? So we can make looting totally legal by the democrats?
Please, enlighten us. What is your interpretation of MAGA "extremism"?...
@@colleenpowell462 The left are the commies. If you want to call the right fascists go ahead. So now we got the commies vs the fascists. This was common knowledge of the Greatest Generation . My Uncle ( who fought in Europe) always felt as if WW2 in Europe was Roosevelt's war.
Well FDR had promised to priortize the war in Europe beofre PH and maintained that after PH.
@@virgilstarkwell8383 Not really, it took until 1944 before American and British troops were seriously facing off with the Wehrmacht in mainland Europe. From June 1941 till early 1944, the - cough * Soviets were the only ones to engage Hitler directly on the ground in mainland Europe with regular armies across a sizeable front (el-Alamein isn't in Europe, you know....). The US mostly concentrated on the Pacific War, while most of the Japanese army was tied up fighting in - China.
Always was amazed when my father said he wanted the Germans to win. He served in WWII, got shot in the head, friendly fire, and would have passed if a surgeon in France hadn't operated.
It is completely ridiculous that it is happening again! I feel like I'm watching a Marvel episode about Hydra!! These people are calculated and relentless and they have mechanisms in place that ensure that if they aren't able to achieve their goal of a fascist state in their generation the next generation will pick up where they left off. Terrifying.
Maybe blame Joseph Kennedy and Prescott Bush... because they are the Americans responsible for Hitler and the Nazis.
Very terrifying what the Democrats are doing, you're correct!

Her staff has done this research. Today, we are still fighting fascism.
Yes. The threat comes from the Democratic Party and MSNBC

Indeed we do not learn from the past. Recently there was a massive push to create a modern Jim Crow society based on whether or not one had gotten the Covid vaccine.
