I'm glad Rachel's book is generating some interest. I *did* know about America's flirtation with fascism in the 1930s and early '40s. However, when I mentioned it, most people were like, "Aw, that never amounted to more than a handful of crazies." Wrong. If the Japanese hadn't given Americans a racist, jingoistic reason to hate the Axis, the public wouldn't have supported the war.
It wasn't a few crazies. It was a large number of wealthy, influential people - large business owners, captains of industry, entrepreneurs, etc. And many of them were making huge profits from trading with Germany.
Rachel is the most astute communicator of political commentary in America. I've seen so many others flailing around and talking in circles without getting any message across and I just wish Rachel was the go-to. She gets right to the core of the issues and speaks in a language all Americans can understand (at least everyone but the fascist MAGA cult). More of this, please.
I agree. Keith Olberman once paid Rachel 435.00 for her to not do an interview with Larry King on CNN, getting her hired at MSNBC. She later denied that on, I think, Bill Maher's show. I've always liked her talent but was disappointed in hearing that. Also she never pushed back on that softball Trump interview on Meet The Press and NBC when Kristen Welker first started there and there was no fact checking whatsoever as Trump spewed debunked misinformation
Just like many Americans in 1941 wanted fascism, so today there are those in America that are working, whether they know it or not, in the service of Putin.
In her autobiography, Trump's first wife said he only had two hobbies. They were golfing and studying and repeatedly watching Hitler's speeches. She said he was fascinated by how Hitler was able to get so many people to adore him. That's why he talks so positively about "Hitler having the right idea.". Her book was published in the 90s long before Trump ever decided to run for office. He is literally following Hitler's outline.
I would love to see a presidential debate moderated by all 3 of the old daily show crew (colbert, stewart & oliver) and each time the nominee's start arguing all 3 of the moderators just start going into an argument of their own about something actually relevant to the public. Not to show they are better candidates, but to show that the nominee's need to get serious and to show how much better things could be done without the rhetoric
But they would be better candidates. I would like to then see them throw those (socialist) issues to the candidates and nail them to commitments to help rather than tear down democratic institutions.
I remember the old videos of the German Bund party 1939 at Madison Square Garden with American flags, a huge picture of George Washington hanging above the stage while Swastika flags flying all over the building.
I am intrigued by Rachel's take on fascism ... enough to want to read her book! What I am getting out of her conversation with Stephen is that there are a lot of people who just want someone to TELL them what to do, because it is easier to say, "They made me do it!" than to say, "I chose to do this!" Evil becomes stronger when good people remain pliant and silent.
I don't think being told what to do or escaping responsibility for actions is actually the hook for most people. The core wish fulfillment of the fascist fantasy is having those in power hurt people you're uncomfortable with or whom you (always erroneously) blame for various perceived ills in life. It's the ultimate power/revenge fantasy when you can't get what you want through good ideas or pursuasive argument (because neither will validate your grievances). Giving power to thugs & abdicating responsibility to them is just an unavoidable side effect. The loss of freedom and near certainty that all will eventually become targets for those in power aren't something pro-fascists thoughtfully choose, just the inevitable consequence blindly backed into.

If there was ever a time for Liz Cheney and Adam kinzinger to run on a joint ticket. This would have to be the time. Pull the GOP back to some semblance of normalcy. Enough of this riding the crazy train. Get the adults back in charge.

Cameras in Congress has destroyed the integrity of the House and the Senate. Legislators have stopped speaking for effective debate and reasonable legislation, now they perform for the home audience. Due process definitely! Cameras in the court room he wouldn't be able to spin the narrative.
Thank you Rachel! Knowledge is Power! America needs REAL history lessons! Not white-washing! 🇺🇸
Her podcast mini series is brilliant. Please listen to "Ultra", it is eye-opening.
People who think fascism is a good thing don't know what fascism actually is.
love her.
I would love it if Stephen could be commentator for debates😀
2:55 WHAT?! goddammit!
I read a research paper out of Harvard that stated that over 25% of Americans, at any given time, support some kind of autocracy. My take on that is that those people have an aversion for thinking for themselves and want to be told what to do.
If there was ever a time for Liz Cheney and Adam kinzinger to run on a joint ticket. This would have to be the time. Pull the GOP back to some semblance of normalcy. Enough of this riding the crazy train. Get the adults back in charge.
Have you checked the voting records of either. They both voted with Trump in the 90% plus category. Liz Cheney rhetoric about choice voters is especially scary.
@@barbaras2669 I am definitely not a GOP fanboy. I am not even American. I am Australian. Looking from the outside, in. But the past voting record is just that in the past. Look at the sacrifices they both made, when they were on the jan 6 committee. They stood up and told the truth about Trump and his now cult followers of the GOP.
Should the GOP win in 24. You would hope it would be with Liz as President and Adam as VP. but let’s hope it is a Dem win with regained majority in both houses. I think Kamala Harris should run for President. Joe Biden is far too old.
@pattygman4675 I can not agree with you. It took an insurrection and their lives being threatened to get them to speak out. All the damage had already been done. They never stood up to Trump while he was in power. They never spoke out against Trump when it counted. Nancy Pelosi gave them that platform. Trump was a symptom of the moral decay of the GOP. They propped him up. They could have voted for impeachment in the first trial. They did not. They put party before country. They knew what a loose cannon Trump was. They didn't care until Trump did to them what he had been doing to the democrats and anyone Trump perceived as his enemy.
@@pattygman4675 Liz and Adam should be charged for sedition. They were participating in a sham investigation!
Kamala has a lower approval rating than Joe! Lol
@@pattygman4675, Harris is not particularly popular with Democrats with anybody really. I think there are many, many people who could run in the Democratic ticket, but I don't think she would win. I think Gavin newsom has a shot at it.
It just hit me how much alike Stephen and Rachel look.
U R so right! Looks, intellect and humour 😊
BOTH have MUGS like SEA GOING 🐢‘s
If there are cameras, what's to stop him from playing up in court even if it means being charged with contempt? Especially if it means he's charged with contempt. What a show for his followers. He can say, you see, this is what they do to me.
Cameras in Congress has destroyed the integrity of the House and the Senate. Legislators have stopped speaking for effective debate and reasonable legislation, now they perform for the home audience.
Cameras in court rooms literally turn the judicial process into trial by media.
It's a terrible idea.
No to cameras in the court room. The OJ trial was a joke with every one playing to the cameras.
I believe it's only fair that all Americans get to see what's happening. I say televise it!!!
I so agree with Rachel. You don't want this egomaniac to get tv exposure, BUT having real tv exposure would allow the public to see due process of law. So, Trump's lies would be immediately fact-checked. I wish cameras were in the civil case, so we could see how inefficient the Trump team is. Thank you Rachel for your energy and insight. Please continue to keep us informed, we need you now more than ever. And Stephen too! xoxo
Oh the way she rolls her eyes lol you can tell so easily how she really feels … I so enjoy the facts she brings to the table even tho it kinda scares the crap outta me tbh 🫣😧
Are you two twins, or siblings? I want to be in your family. 😂
Exactly. He likes to be on TV and then he badmouths those against him. Nauseous.
This was a decade of enabling controlling cults at my expense and to the benefit of ppl getting ahead using my things.
TV won’t help, he will still try to spin it, such a creep!
What’s the name and author of the book exposing fascism in the US before WWII? I’d love to give it a read
New book by Rachel Maddow titled Prequel
I'm currently being tortured through my teeth for reporting crime. How much longer will the country be asleep?
Rachel could be Stephen's Doppelganger
‘Giving Him Attention’ is how we got here. You don’t stop a dumpster fire by continuing to film it.
Makes sense. After all, I think it was Oscar Wilde who said that the only thing worse than being spoken badly of is not being spoken of at all.
I'd love cameras in the courtroom. When things go south for tRump, he'll freak out and start demanding cameras to be removed from the courtroom.
