No it is not. What is happening is that moderate people are being pushed to the right. This is a minority which, albeit being somewhat a threat, does not represent the real threats: rising organised crime infiltrating society and islamism, which are undoubtedly correlated with uncontrolled immigration from ME and North Africa. A recent report in Sweden has shown that Iran is founding organised crime and indoctrination of the 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants from ME. We are under attack and the left seems oblivious to the real threat of our societies. Today EU election voting results will show you. Mark my words.
As the 'Far Right' is gaining in popularity all over the Western world one has to ask Why? Why are people dissatisfied with the current state of their lives, then one needs to ask Who is gaining from this situation. Those are the real perpetrators of our current lives of austerity. Most people the world over simply want the same things, freedom to live in peace and enough to raise their families.
Its the elitist way this reporter speaks that let's me know who is to blame. He is literally saying the Italian government shouldn't tolerate this. What does not tolerating it look like? Fascists wouldn't tolerate it. If you want to censor or arrest people for this you are only going to make them stronger. In America it's the people that claim to be anti-facist that are the most fascist. If you cheer on the government to censor them today; tomorrow they will do the same to you and your ideals. Just calling people "fascist" doesn't mean anything anymore bc it's so overused and used incorrectly. I guarantee who prospers from this are the same people that prosper from everything else. They love it. Any division is good for them. The actual Italians are the indigenous population of Italy so they aren't crazy to feel like foreigners are coming to take their country. I used to say I wish the Native Americans were not accepting at all when the first Europeans came to their land but I realize now that the reason they didn't understand the threat was because it didn't happen overnight. It started very small and the natives had no idea what all would come, and if they had understood this threat sooner, they would have killed all the first ones to arrive. Colonialism never stops. In America, I have come to realize that what really makes a white supremacist is being so arrogant that it can't happen to you. That what you have can't ever be taken. The arrogance involved in people thinking it can't happen to them are the real supremacists of any race or people.
I'd say dissatisfaction in the country is a fuel for criminal grifters and stupid ideologies to rise. the country has problems? yes. turning towards mussolini? these people are clearly out of their mind.
People in the comment section know the difference between patriotism and fascism? Because fascism is not only corporativism, patriotism or nationalism as someone said. Fascism is a totalitarian ideology that came to power between 20s and 40s of the last century instilling fear through the society, eliminating political opposition (read about fascist squadrism, Matteotti murder etc.), prohibitng free and multiparty elections (national fascist party was the only legal party in italy) and subjugating and discriminating minorities. Fascism is violence, this is the true definition, because is a violent ideology, came to power with violence and led Italy to violence, dictatorship and the absence of rights and freedom and ultimately to war. National socialism was inspired by fascism and that should says it all. The historical revisionism we are witnessing in this period is unacceptable and is based on fear, confusion and poorness of the people. These are hard and uncertain times and today as then far-right blows on the general discontent with the risk of starting a fire that will not be easy to put out if it becomes too large as history teaches. Don't look for easy answers to complex problems, try to use your head and not your gut, we must all try to find an alternative to all of this together and united. And the far-right parties that don’t condemn these so called nostalgic tributes are complicit and irresponsible because they do it for electoral gain or worse out of real conviction in certain cases for these ideas. Or worse for pure ignorance because you can be nationalist and right-wing without being illiberal and fascist, because it is too easy to condemn the drifts of an ideology if the ideology itself is incompatible with our liberal democracies. This is why they always taught us to watch over democracy because this is not just an Italian phenomenon but a European if not global one. Think about it, people. And get informed well about what surrounds you and about history. And the great grandson of a fascist secret agent tells you this so i know what i’m talking about and the risks involved in this dangerous twist.
@@brandonreid7528 So what? Do you justify the establishment of a dictatorship to achieve these ideals? I don't get the point, i'm reporting facts, not opinions. I remind you that this is exactly what they did last century with this excuse. Fascism isn't an opinion, is unconstitutional. If you would like a fascist government you have to change the constitution first
Everything you stated is what Marxism/Comunism did back then. The Holodomor. Is a jewish ideology back in 1890s. Fascism is complete oposite of that. Wonder why people are brainwashed to not talk about fascism but allowed to talk about comunism, which is still alive till this day in Asia.
Would an Islamophobe, or anti-Muslim racist, like you condemn Hindutva for similar reasons? Wait... you wouldn't, because you and other neofascists are friendly toward Hindutva and because pro-Mussolini and pro-Hitler fan boys like you, other neofascists, and the Hindutva types (fascists in their own right) all want to see Muslims in concentration camps and mass graves.
While it’s great to cover this topic it’s terrible journalism from the part of BBC to gloss over the reason why Fascism is problematic. Conflating the horrors of Nazism with the Fascist of Italy is NOT the same and by not addressing the flaws of the Italian Fascist you leave it open to ‘interpretation’. There is a much deeper issues re Nationalism and the corruption under Capitalist oligarchs as well as the ‘Mafia’ style politicians that are the root cause of why so many Italians are leaning into Fascism. Why did Fascism begin in the 1st place? These BBC docs end up not asking bigger questions and certainly not answering them which ends up creating a vacuum that can be filled by disinformation.
I agree with you, they don't even try to go to the root, which would be helpful to at least propose some alternatives who don't look that pitiful and who are likely to be better. As a very average Italian I'd like to have an idea on how to tackle the problems we're facing in a fruitful way, but I honestly have no idea where to start and I'm very sad that most of the time I understand Italian news better when I watch some foreign journalist. Unfortunately this is not one of those times...
@@TesterAnimal1 I guess you missed when he said it was irony and the courts deemed it as such as well, in Italy it's common to joke on these things as we don't take everything seriously, maybe in other countries it's not
What kind of journalism this? 1. In all of this, where were the attempts to ask self-proclaimed supporters of Mussolini to explain what in him they actually support in the present day? (It would give you an opportunity to test the general knowledge as well as political ideology in actual words: a mere salute at a contemporary really does naught to explain one’s political stances; for all you know many may have attended those out of peer encouragement or ignorance of history) 2. Where were the statistics for the abundance-in percent terms-of what is regarded as deplorable political support from people? Surely, nothing is more important than a statistical picture of the reality, of the truth.
Far right is blooming all over Europe because other parties do not address poulation worries regarding immigration. The interesting question would have been: why don't other parties address this topic seriously? (therefore enabling this dangerous far right blooming)
Those same governments have participated in fossil fuel dependency and colonialism which have had devastating impacts on the countries people flee from. Now it’s a problem for you because they didn’t stay put and die quietly. Now you’re blaming centrists and the left for enabling fascists by not adopting fascist policy.
It isn't addressed because people who don't like immigration nit only take a radical approach to it, but also they blame just about any problem on immigrants. Here in America, Mexican immigrants are blamed for taking jobs and bringing drugs and violence to the country. In reality, most jobs were sold over seas by companies who don't want to pay their workers a fair wage, a problem that right-wing politicians here aren't wanting yo fix. The drug problem is caused by drug rings from Mexico, but the right wing blames it on every immigrant that comes from Mexico. Deporting every possible Mexican isn't going to fix that. Stopping immigration hurts us in the long run because we sort have enough children to replace us in the workplace, which will cause our population to age. Immigrants are just a scare tactic they like to use, think of Germany during WWII with the Jews

Exactly. I don’t support or understand these new facist movements at all, but it would be a horrifying abuse of power for the state to stomp out these demonstrations. You don’t get to choose what is allowed
This is such an unfaithful representation of the political situation in Italy, as it is ideologically based on the propaganda of left wing parties, newspapers and intellectuals. Meloni's government (which I do not support, to be clear) has many faults, but it has not limited freedom of speech nor any other constitutional right, contrary to what the deputy mayor of Bologna said. The fascist party Forza Nuova has never won any seat in the Parliament so far; its leaders and others have been condanned for the 2021 assault to CGIL. Fratelli d'Italia is the leading party in Italy and the present government is the expression of a legitimately elected parliament in 2022. These are the facts, the rest is just bullshit. I have great respect for BBC and I still consider it one of the most reliable news agency in the world, but this report is clearly ideologically based.
“Il più bello esemplare di fascista in cui ci si possa oggi imbattere (e ne raccomandiamo agli esperti la più accurata descrizione e catalogazione) è quello del sedicente antifascista unicamente dedito a dare del fascista a chi fascista non è” “Nero su Nero” di Leonardo Sciascia 1979 “The most beautiful example of a fascist that one can come across today (and we recommend the most accurate description and cataloging to experts) is that of the self-styled anti-fascist solely dedicated to calling someone a fascist who is not a fascist” “Nero su Nero” by Leonardo Sciascia 1979
The Roman salute is from a painting called The Oath of the Horatii, painted in 1784 by Jacques-Louis David. There is no historical evidence the Roman's used this salute.
Italians aren't even Roman, their ancestors are the ones who destroyed the Romans and its hilarious they cling on to the symbolism of being Roman and hold them as their ancestors
I’ve seen this coming a long way off, and why? Because of what the EU has done to all of its constituent nations. It’s not justification but rather simply cause and effect. So predictable.
Totally the E.U. has behaved so terribly especially regarding immigration. People feel bullied by an E.U. government that they feel doesn't represent their interests. I wish people would learn from history though. I wish the far right and far left that both realize that fascism and communism lead to the deaths of millions.
Not to forget Ken Kirby's 1989 BBC documentary "Fascist Legacy", on Italian fascist war crimes in Africa and the Balkans, bought by Italian Rai TV and never broadcast by it and the book by Michael Palumbo "L'olocausto rimosso" on which it was based, censored in Italy in 1992 by the publisher Rizzoli. This is also to talk about the fact that Italy "has never dealt with fascism".

True, most of the time. The problem is we are seeing around 30% on the radical authoritarian Right in a few of countries right now. Up to 50% among voters in some, like the US. It is a bit out of balance. Unfortunately nobody is dealing with the causes of it, like income inequality and its direct consequences like living costs crises.

No! I do not think Fascism is coming back to Italy. By chance I heard Meloni for the first time in 2015 having set UA-cam to continue when a presentation had finished. The words were so different from those normally heard, that I restarted from the beginning, and she certainly was different from the continuous criticism being spewed out by some other parties, without alternative proposals being made. I grew up devoid of any ideologies in Tanzania, and had never voted until I returned to Italy after 41 years. I would consider myself a "centrist" since I listen to ALL proposals, evaluate them for long term effects, and choose what I consider the better one. Most Italian politicians are not up to a standard of governing "anything", and many proposals are disastrous. So Meloni really stood out above the rest.
What place is not in chaos? In US, the border crisis, big cities overrun by migrants, crime is through the roof and only keeps on going up (we don't have anything remotely ressembling mass shoppiftings, car thefts, robberies, people ever increasingly use hard drugs (the most dangerous there is, we don't have things like fentanyl on wideapread level, a couple of small EU nations in the East have that problem but it is something you don't even see on the streets, homeless are camping in cities and parks and wherever - some cities in EU has problems with homlesness, like every place, but not even close how common it is in the States. It would be not possible to even do most of these things here, camping on the streets, selling and using hard drugs openly, for theft and robberies law slams people into place. Those in the video are idiots who use the pretext of commemorating fallen soldiers (half of whom are criminals but that's fine) just to perform the fascist salute. Giorgia Meloni has a fascist childhood and has a lot of support among fascists, many FdI members even have an affinity with National Socialism. The left opposition does not exist, parties like PD play into the hands of the right, they have now detached themselves from the needs of the workers.

Fascism as a philosophy started in Milan at the university(Giovanni Gentile). It was a theory of materialism and reality and its place in the "ideal" .. it facilitated in a backhanded way any esoteric or traditionally humanitarian approach to politics... was called "active idealism". Transcendence or esotericism was to be found in action, the will and was placed firmly in the "material". It was a remedy offered to governmental paralysis arising from the party systems and regulation, and antidemocratic. (sort of like today) Rationalized all sorts of damaging, oppressive policies. BBC should do a piece on the academic origins of this philosophy.
If Mussolini, like Franco, had refrained from entering into an alliance with Nazi Germany, history would have remembered him completely differently. Of course it wasn't an angel. What the Italians did in Africa is indefensible (Ethiopia, for example...) but at the same time Mussolini effectively attacked the mafia, reached an agreement with the Vatican, things improved in Italy, etc. but unfortunately Mussolini was a megalomaniac. And everything that was good on the side of fascism (and it was!) destroyed and brought Italy to the brink of collapse. I have respect, for example, for Count Ciano, for his anti-German attitude and attitude towards Poland in 1939. We should also not forget that Mussolini was dismissed by the Great Fascist Council, which means that something like a disabled, but still, democracy was at work.

Several years ago, I enquired about obtaining Italian citizenship via Juris Sanguis (blood descent). My grandparents emigrated in early 1920s after Mussolini was elected. The economy was in a nose dive. After telling consulate rep that my grandfather was in Italian Alpini during World War One, he questioned me about his political beliefs and also mine. Straight out he asked if I believed in fascism and if I admired Mussolini. I was floored. In my father’s family, Mussolini was always referred as that no good bastarde. He was why they left Italy. Then they would go into Hitler.

There is a much deeper issues re Nationalism and the corruption under Capitalist oligarchs as well as the ‘Mafia’ style politicians that are the root cause of why so many Italians are leaning into Fascism. Why did Fascism begin in the 1st place?

Its like the American concept that freedom means I can do whatever I want even if it harms others or goes against their rights, we still have cultural memories of the atrocities f@scists have done, and when someone says they want to revive that, of course a lot of people are going to heavily disagree, but it's not like in f@scist countries where you can bee arrested for saying the wrong thing. Freedom of speech shouldn't be used as a tool for control because I bet you that the same people who say they ar0e just using freedom of speech would have no problem taking that away from others who disagree with them
I am Italian and I can say that Italianan people ABSOLUTELY DON'T WANT BACK TO FASCISM
The video shows a commemoration that EVERY YEAR fascist does to honor the cameratas died in that period.
Even the premier Meloni reject to be Fascista
., The left opposition is very strong and are increasing in the last European votation.
Friend, as an Italian, the fairy tale that Italians no longer want fascism is pure utopia, and I would like to believe me, however the far right is gaining more and more support.

Europe is finally starting to stand up for their culture.
BEFORE "SOME ONE "WAS INTERSTED IN TOLERANCE AND WAS A BIG PROMOTION OF THAT, NOW "THAT SOMEONE" INTERSTED IN FASCISM AND IT IS PROPMOTED TODAY
Sounds like you have much more knowledge, insight than the rest of us & BBC ! This is nice....leaves opening for actually understanding history, instead of being left with just 'knee jerk reactions' on both sides! THANK YOU !

guys for all of you that have no idea how italy is let me tell you in very simple way....Italy is divided in two worlds, since always, with every slice of society, and in this particular case, fascism never died or disappeared...and italy had the biggest comunist party in europe after ww2...also still there...
hatred never ends well
yes, so stop hating white people :) stop wanting whites to be a minority in their own countries. :) stop shaming white people for wanting to preserve their culture. :) stop this blind hate, or you will see hate that is organized. :)
Oh yeah?
Wakey-Wakey. This is happening all across Europe. Would be meaningful to have a broader analysis and understand root causes and trends.

AH
When BBC will concern about communism?!
What about it?
As a Slovenian I am very concerned about Italian fashism growing. Suddenly they are presenting themselves as VICTIMS of WW2, how they suffered by Yugoslav partisans etc. etc. They don't ever tell how they occupied Slovenian territories and that they were given some of these territories after WW2 because the allies wanted a port in N Adriatic, but did not trust Yugoslavia. Italians were invaders who gor out of the war unscathed and yet they present themselves as victims. Insanity on the rise.
Se gli italiani sono stati invasori cosa ne pensi degli in glesi? Domandati perché in ogni parte del mondo si parla inglese. Non c è una fetta di mondo dove loro e gli americani non siano andati ad imporre il loro modo di vivere
For people to know why this feeling is coming back isn't just because of knuckle-dragging, but because of the systems made post WW2 are failing without truly addressing it. It's leading to people starting to get angry at some politicians/business leaders/media/ and activists who won't stop being whimsical and making real endeavors such as think of one's country before the entire world.

No, it's how a degree of intolerance is required in a society to avoid the intolerant. It's a paradox. Intolerance is required to have tolerance. If we are tolerant of the intolerant (fascists, racists and bigots) we end up with their BS in our society.

This video is pathetic. Italy imported anti-semitism from Germany, at that time, and for that time Mussolini's dictatorship was mild with the opponents. Fascism in Italy started as a counter-revolution to the very concrete risk of a proximate soviet-like revolution. In fact, your Churchill praised Fascism greatly at the beginning ("If I was Italian, Fascism would have all of me"). The true Fascism today is called "anti-fascism," as they are doing their best to shut down oppositions, remove free speech, and they also use violence.
Italian Fascism was not Nazism, that's why we can still honestly appreciate Mussolini's huge work for Italy, for example on welfare.
Lastly, thanks to all your beautiful words my country today is invaded, with the encuragement of the pope; at that time we had an empire and the pope was kept in his place. And you are surprised there are nostalgic people??

When a documentary about the atrocities made by the british imperialism?
Everyday people in the UK, France, Germany, Austria, and Italy are obviously discontent with the way their countries have been run for the last however many decades. Europe, in general, is not happy with the way its socio-cultural patterns have evolved. A lot of people want change, so you'll get a lot of this, for better or worse. It seems hard for the people in charge to fight it and say they want more of the same when the people aren't satisfied with that anymore.

Waiting for BBC’s reporting on the communists in Italy, and the rest of Europe and the world. I am sure it will be very similar.
