"I'm sorry you didn't' want to be parents. That you didn't want to take care of your child. As a result, you took mine away from me." That's so powerful. It's also frightening.
its true tho buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I also find that people in general are either bad at or unable to deal with people in troubled situations. I have no doubt a healthy peer group can counterbalance parental neglect. Unfortunately it was not there either.
This is why Choice has to remain available. Parenthood is just too important to be forced upon someone. Yes, some people still won't make the right choice (like these parents), but far more will!
@@zdiddy-dw9vg This may come as a shock to you, but providing the circumstances to commit murder is still a crime. Idk where you live, but most US states have laws that have determined that you do not have to be the one holding the weapon to be found responsible for murder. Rightfully so.
His parents completely neglected him, if they had actually been caring and attentive caring parents this could have been prevented. I’m not saying he absolutely would have been well adjusted, I can’t say that at all cause I don’t know, but in the very least something could have been done to help him if only his parents cared enough about him. They were terrible individuals who should have never been allowed to be parents.
As a mom, it saddened me when he texted "Can you at least text back?" That kid never had a chance. He practically raised and fended for himself. Mentally he was f'd by age 9
@@TomikaKelly He was in severe need of help. I had terribly abusive, absentee parents and grew up a pacifist who despises guns, but I still understand that not every child is the same.

Nevermind that the school didn't send him home & gave her 48 hours to find a therapist. "I think she should've taken him home immediately after seeing that drawing." So, now it's cool to apply the law based on what you think? Based on your opinion? Based on your feelings? Not based on what the law says & what proof of your guilt was presented in the hearing? @@ThatRedheddStay in school kid. Those who talk up the importance of objective truth are the ones who balk at science and facts, themselves. There's no need to get bent out of shape because his mom got charged -- it only makes it sound like you're insecure about your own beliefs and practices.
@@ThatRedheddThe parents demonstrated criminal negligence and ignored all of the signs that their child was becoming increasingly violent and a threat to both himself and others. They facilitated the commission of the crime by providing the weapon that he used to commit it. That they texted him the day of the shooting "not to do it" means they knew he was capable of it and did nothing to stop him. The truth is that it is entirely legal to hold parents criminally responsible for the crimes their children commit if the parents could have reasonably prevented the crime from occurring. If you don't want that kind of responsibility, then don't have kids.

I mean what sane person let alone parent would do that?
I mean in cases of these types of murderers it's common to say that the parents are also to blame and should be held accountable . But this is a case where I 100% agree with that statement
I feel that the stuff he scribbled on his class work was his last cry for help or him giving a warning signal. The teacher saw it and brought it to the parents attention and they ignored it. This case was disturbing! I’m so disgusted by these parents.
When people say US has a mental health crisis, this is one of the stuff they mean. In any other functional societies, he would´ve been sent to a psychiatric ward and get proper treatment. But those who can change don´t care, so the others have to suffer the consequences
It was in fact that school Councilor who made the decision to keep Ethan at school that day... so much info in this pod cast that is either skewed or wrong or just left out. The gun was not bought for his Birthday... it was an early Christmas present and the gun was not just given to Ethan... it was kept in the Parents bedroom... guns were not a new thing in Ethans life and the Parents had bought a .22 handgun for Ethans use at the range...but Ethan wanted the Sig... so much more to the whole story of this family and Ethans mental health...
You can’t just blame his parents, this boy knew he wasn’t going to get help from his parents, he had tried many times and got no were. So he tried with his teachers at school. He drew those drawing in order to get help, but again, he was let down by the school that knew what he was doing and did nothing. They also need to be punished.

These cases make me so angry. His parents knew. They knew he was unstable and did nothing. They did nothing his whole damn life, and as a result, many young lives were cut horrifically short.

She faces up to 15 years in prison and is still being held on bond. James (the father) is expected to go to trial next month on the same charges of involuntary manslaughter that the mother faced.
It doesn't surprise me that his parents attempted to run away from their responsibilities. They've been doing it since the birth of their son. I feel for the boy, but actions have consequences and he is where he should be.
Exactly. The whole thing feels like a morbid and disgusting plot to get mental help. As if he felt that the only way he could be allowed to see a psychiatrist would be if he got into the prison system as a violent crimes offender.
Nobody knew the kid had mental health issues. Nobody believed he had ever hallucinated. Everyone thought he was just another sad teenager. However the majority of children in a similar situation do not become murderers. Ethan is a junior psychopath. And torturing animals is a massive warning. But the USA is home to psychopaths of course.
Thier ignorace and lack of parenting pissed me off so much in this particular case which is sad that there is many to begin with.. They ignored so many signs that they personal witnessed and others have pointed out. Then somehow decided it was a good idea to buy him a gun that would be easily assessable to him even though he clearly has mental heath problems. And that the fact they ran away when their child was in custody even to ask him why because they were scared about their own lives. What did they expect the outcome of their child to be when the people rasing him that are supposed to care about him the most don't even show him how love feels.

I think the problem wasnt the violent games and movies but the prolonged neglect and instability of the home that was supposed to be a safe space for his development, it traumatized him beyond comprehension.
All that sure did not help, but pretty much every kid watches violent movies, and sadly neglectful and dumb parents aren’t uncommon. Yet, those that enjoy animal torture or end up killing others are very, very rare. So clearly, the parents deserve blame, but did not “create” this kid.
My Dad used to play “Wolfenstein” and I would watch him play (I’ve never been much of a gamer so I watched others play more than I actually played). The game didn’t phase me. He and my mom gave me attention, taught me right from wrong, and told me no. They weren’t perfect, but they did their best. I’m not a twisted minded shooter and I don’t treat people like garbage.
I can't believe how his parents handled his mental illness and just literally helped him to make those fatal moves. They need to get really harsh punishments too!

I feel the same way. I remember being in class on the day it happened, and constantly refreshing news feeds for updates. I remember that the next day when we went back to school, the halls were empty because so many people skipped out of fear. My highschool was never known as a really safe place (In fact a common phrase was "Only at Anchor Bay" among students), but the shooting truly worsened it. It didn't help that everyone knew someone who knew someone who was at Oxford when it happened. I still remember hearing abt how someone's best friend had died, and how they didn't know what to do with themselves anymore. After everyone had to start coming back, I remember that even the teachers were all shaken up. I remember my graphic arts teacher tearfully pleading with us to be wary of what we say and how we treat others, because she couldn't stand the thought of a single student being hurt. I remember she went over an escape plan with us where we could go out the back doors and down the street and hide at one of her friend's houses, and the fact that she had to make that plan in the first place makes me so upset. There were so many students who struggled to go back to school. So many kids were scared and anxious and had panic attacks, me included. I remember that I started carrying around a blanket, weighted plushie, and fidget toys for anyone who needed it. It doesn't seem like much, but you would not believe the amount of comfort those items could bring. This was the first school shooting that had really hit close to home for any of us, and it just turned everything upside down. And this is what happened to a school that wasn't even related to Oxford. I feel so terrible for those students every day, and I really hope that they all have had therapy to deal with the trauma. I hope our state never has to deal with something like this again, and same goes for the rest of the country. You never know how terrible a tragedy like this is until it happens next door to you.
I live in Michigan, about 40 minutes southwest, and his parent's (I think) are the first parents in the US to be arrested and set to go to trial, to be held responsible for Ethan's actions. They were also on the run for a few days, so they couldn't be found and arrested. Disgusting! While Ethan has a public defender, his parents hired a law firm to represent them. Talk about throwing your own child under the bus. I think they plan to start the parents' trial(s) by the end of this year. They're the worst kinds of parents who failed their mentally ill minor child, who then became a teenaged mass serial school shooter. They should have taken him home when they were called to the school. But, they were too disinterested in him to even care. I hope they're found guilty. Great coverage of this awful tragedy.
I've also heard that the US will start seeking to prosecute parents who were negligent to their children's mental health. They'll also press charges on parents who had guns and didn't secure them, or provided guns to their minors as gifts. Lets face it, these kids get armed somehow and it's usually not on their own. It's a step in the right direction, but I think apathy will remain apathy and those sorts of parents will always convince themselves *their* child wouldn't do that, they just have to feed and clothe them long enough until they're gone. Seems like the mindset of Ethan's parents sadly.
@@tearainey1 I don't even think those parents convince themselves their child wouldn't do that, I think they legit just don't care about their kid. Ethan was unstable, asking for help, and they didn't give a f*ck. Now that he got arrested and is gone forever they're probably thinking "Good riddance," honestly. It feels like those kinds of parents see their child as a... lump of flesh or whatever hanging around them, and bothering them.
I was so fucking relieved to hear this. I was listening to this whole video I was thinking how they need to be prosecuted too, they did such an awful job with the one thing that should have been more precious than anything - Their child. Disgusting.
Yes, they are the first parents in the US to be prosecuted for their failure to get Ethan help and buying him the gun. I say it's about time parents are being held accountable.
I honestly feel bad for this kid. He was crying out for help his whole life and his parents ignored him like he was nothing. All of this could have been prevented if those two actually cared about their son. I don't believe he was born evil, his life, loneliness and metal issues made him do it. I think he just wanted to feel important for once
I get that what he went thru was awful and no kid should go thru this, but these ppl just want sympathy and attention. To me it’s just a trick. Don’t fall for it this kid doesn’t deserve sympathy. Listen to those journal entries.
God this video hit me harder than any other true crime videos I've watched, Ethan and I had very similar childhoods, my mother wasn't a bad mother but we were foreigners in the US, we didn't know the language and we had no one to turn to, my mother would work 2 to 3 jobs to maintain us so I wouldn't see her up to even 5 days straight, I would cook and clean after myself but I would always be alone. We would always move around trying to find apartments with cheaper rent so I wouldn't really have any friends, after a few years I started to show antisocial behavior and even became a bully at one point. I then moved to a new school, I was listening to metallica in the hallway and a couple kids from a higher grade came to talk to me about music, befriended them and they showed me their love for music and video games, I became a metalhead like them and I became a gamer, I think they saved my life just by being my friends, then I had to move back to my home country, I said my goodbyes and promised to visit when I was older, I never forgot their kindness with me, I became more social and I had a blast in my teens, I still remember them, my wife and I are planning on visiting the US, I'll visit their homes hoping I'll find them to thank them, because after watching this video I think my life would have been a lot different if they hadn't been there for me.
It does sound like your situations were similar, and you don't say if your mum was caring or not but the big difference between your mum and Ethan's is that yours had little choice and probably didn't want to be working every hour under the sun but had to, whereas Ethan's mum and dad not only worked but went out and partied and did lots of stuff in their free time without him.

The capital of Michigan is Lansing, not Detroit. Detroit is just the largest and probably, most well know. Just a heads up! Also, thank you for covering this! Heartbreaking but so important that the parents are being held accountable!
I find it fascinating that Ethan (at least in the end) accepted responsibility and will be in prison for the foreseeable future and his parents skipped their arraignment, ran from the law and pleaded that they did nothing wrong. What Ethan did was horrible, but it sure sounds like he was practically begging for help and his parents were like, "nah"
Yup. There's something seriously wrong with his parents. They look as dead behind the eyes as Ethan does. It's no surprise their child turned out this way.
They weren't informed about the hearing. They were kept in the dark purposely so it would look like they were running when they were simply unable to stay at their home & went to a friend's place. This whole thing has been orchestrated by the DA to bolster their political career.
I work in the mental health system in the county where this horrible incident occurred. Everyone affected by this tragedy was offered crisis intervention services - including the students, the teachers, and any family member who needed to talk. A compounding factor was that schools were still transitioning back to in person teaching after the Covid crisis. The toll on the students and teachers who were coming out of being very isolated at home and going into a situation that was literally deadly really made the recovery difficult.
A girl whose family my my mom cleans for was a senior at Oxford when this happened. She took a semester off before college cuz she was really messed up over what happened, only to be at State for like a month when there was a shooting there. She's 19 & has been in 2 school shootings!
I’m not a psych or legal expert and I know this could never be proven, but the vibe I got from this story was that his parents really didn’t want him or to be parents at all and were annoyed (for lack of a better term) by having to be parents so they did what they could to set things up in ‘hopes’ something would happen so he would no longer burden them and did it in a way where they thought could deny wrongdoing.
@@BamBabyBrenda Agreed. I'm saying that I get the vibe that they wanted him out of their lives, so they planted a lot of seeds hoping something would happen and they could escape accountability by saying they 'didn't know'.
They probably assumed someone else will handle it, or he'll get rid of himself either by his own hands or aging out. That's kind of what my mother did withy half-brother... And he was released after he 5th+ strike of attempted murder, he also left the state without informing his parole/probation officer... Which I narc'ed because he should never contact me and I want him locked away from people.
Teaching kids to keep their emotions in check I think is one of the most valuable life lessons you can provide as a parent. Your emotions are just emotions but with actions behind them, they can be regrets. No one deserves parents that don’t care like Ethan had. I see careless adults all around me like it’s a disease. Love yourself people
Yeah, he chose those actions with no remorse. I grew up including a lot of other friends with no parents around ever really, we raised our siblings even. Some of us turned into addicts or alcoholics as a result but never thought about shooting up a school. The only kids who did were abused at home and bullied at school who even considered it but of course never followed thru with. He chose his actions and now has to live the rest of his life with the consequences unfortunately.
Thumbs up to the authorities for making Ethan’s parents responsible for their part in this very sad story..I hope they get the harshest punishment possible…another great story Adrian….thanks!
The 1 & only time the school asked the parents to come in to discuss concerns, BOTH parents went to meet w/ their son & school staff. The school psychologist gave them a list of MH providers & 48 hours to make an appointment - which they agreed to do. School staff allowed EC to stay @ school & didn't check his bag, and knew of his drawings, knew he'd been looking up ammo during class, & knew he'd been to the range 2 days prior. If school staff felt EC could remain @school that day, it's obvious that his parents would see nothing wrong with it either.
The thing that made me happiest in this story, is that the parents are facing charges too. They deserve the same punishment or worse than Ethan. His childhood would have been seriously rough, but I feel worse for the families of those who didn't make it.
I thought the parents were white collar big wigs but the dad was just a grub hub driver only and he thought that was more important that the customer get his food!

That mother's final words to Ethan's parents really says it all. This whole story is just so frustrating, coming from the perspective of a parent myself. Ethan pulled the trigger, but it was his mother and father who killed those poor children. Thank you for another great story, Adrian, your compassion and amazing delivery never fails to impress!
Nobody thought the kid was mentally ill. There were no signs prior to that day that people were aware of. This ones 100% on the parents. I know what its like being cooped up in a room all day, every day while home alone. All while feeling the same feelings he had of abandonment, i lived with my dad and he was the same, never bothered to talk to me, never bought food for the house, wouldn't reply to messages and would randomly go on holidays. It made me feel genuinely crazy like my brain was breaking and i couldn't do anything about it. Being alone with the feelings of hopelessness and abandonment brings out the worst in people, for me i got paranoid that people were judging me 24/7 and that wasn't helped by the fact i have serious insomnia, depression and anxiety. It left me in a state of constantly feeling like one minor convenience or one bad thing happening and i would completely flip off the rails and either end it all or lash out at the wrong people. After a while of that sort of treatment and having those feelings it makes you seriously resentful of practically everything and yourself, and it never ends well unless you can escape it or get any sort of help, which in this case the parents failed to provide and now the victims parents have to live with this negligence as the reason there children were killed. truly a sad case that i can relate to a bit too well, my condolences to the families of all that were lost, may they rest in peace
As someone who comes from an abusive and neglectful family I often watch cases like this and wonder what it is that can have us go through similar upbringings and mental health issues but have me turn into a caring person and him into a heartless killer. I have to wonder if there really is something in us at the beginning of life that truly determines which path we go down
As a mental health worker the type of household you grew up in has a lot of drama, conflict and such like. I think the household that this kid grew up in was way worse. As far as his parents are concerned there was nothing there for their son, it was totally cold. Clearly those parents were totally indifferent to their own child. I doubt they even fought as they were out together enjoying themselves. There is love in households with alot of conflict and drama. Often the parents in these households have lots of issues themselves going back to childhood. I do hope you can find peace, God knows we all deserve that.
There's definitely got to be bad wiring in the brain. Like the case if the girls who were into creepypasta stories and Slenderman. My friend and I were really into that stuff at that age too, but never wanted to kill anyone. So I really believe that some have something totally wrong with their brain.
Was it that you had someone good outside of the family? Considering his parent's DUI a year before he was born, I'd have to wonder if he had some level of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
his voice recording made me almost cry. this is so terribly tragic for the victims, the victims families, the children who are now forever traumatized… but also for Ethan who never even had a fighting chance despite screaming out for help…
Oh please. I would have sympathized with Ethan but I don’t have empathy for killers. There are thousands of kids with neglectful parents, and even though that sucks, they don’t usually turn out to be school shooters.

I don't know if Ethan Crumble's criminal behavior had an organic component, but clearly he was mentally ill. His biological parents were worthless. Shame on them to leave the poor kid alone to emotionally waste away like they did. It was fitting that they were charged with a crime. Thank you for your most excellent reporting. I always enjoy your presentations.
It has an organic component. He was born without the brain connections that make us feel love, compassion and empathy. In other words, he was born a sociopath, but if sociopaths are raised in a loving way, they become law abiding citizens. If they , but when they aren't, they become delinquents.
@@rocioaguilera3555I see it in the exact opposite. He may have been born normal and a caring family might have kept him that way. It was their callous disregard for his needs and neglect, maybe abuse too, that broke his brain. He asked for help early on and it def could have been avoided.
Nobody knew the kid had mental health issues. Nobody believed he had ever hallucinated. Everyone thought he was just another sad teenager. What he wrote in his journal can't be taken as fact and his parents had no idea what he was contemplating. There isn't a punishment strong enough for those two abject failures calling themselves "parents". Whatever sentence they end up getting, it won't be enough.

So GLAD you have explored this case. This case ticked me off beyond the pale, because the parents were so flippant regarding the SO many many warning signs. GLAD they are charged too.
Adrian! it is warming my heart to see your UA-cam channel doing so well. selling merch and all that stuff now? this is awesome for me because I was one of your first subscribers. I have been following this channel since day one and I am tremendously happy for your success :) keep doing your thing!
Listening to Ethan's recording gave me the impression that he could've been a decent and smart person. It's such a shame that he wasn't born with caring and responsible parents. He was aware through all of it and his parents' were just like "eh, take care of it yourself and oh here, have a 🔫" Rest in peace to all of the victims in this tragedy♥️
Yes! I was shocked he said he valued life and didn’t want to die. Those are usually the two thoughts most murderers feel the exact opposite about. He had potential just like any other person growing up to become something positive to the world but he squandered it on his hate and desire of vengeance. I’m honestly shocked he didn’t go after his parents.
I’ve been following this case on and off, and I’m always coming to the same conclusion. This kid never had much of a chance, his parents really molded him into going down the hole of sociopathy. He cried out so much and he seemingly wanted access to help and they never gave him that. But now that you’ve done this deep dive into his childhood… he never grew up with much of an idea of what love was. His parents failed and they should definitely do the same damn time if not more than him.
Many of my friends suffered from neglect or abuse, but all of them had someone who was their lifeline. It really sounded like he had no one. I absolutely feel for all the victims, but he was not raised to understand caring. The quote from the parent who lost their child is so sad and true :(
This channel has developed so well. And produced such good content. I’d actually like to see a part 2 of what charges the parents given and penalties they received.
Ya know. . . This is a super tough one. . . While my heart breaks for the victims, my heart breaks for Ethan too. No one was there for him and even those who noticed warning signs, diligently contacted his parents and neither one of them were there for him. His own parents. . . So horrible.
@XxSTACKxX GOOD they failed him. They are apart of this problem for blatantly ignoring him as he pleaded for help before hand. With proper care he could have got help. Those children could have lived
@@BamBabyBrenda Exactly. Parents like this make other parents look bad. He needed them and they failed him. Ethan is the last person his parents should have failed. Just makes me sick. . . And I truly hope his parents get the max punishment that can be dealt.
No one’s heart should break for this scumbag. What he did is irredeemable no matter what the circumstances were beforehand. He should be locked away at the bottom of the prison.
This is gross negligence on the parents part. The common theme between school shooters is passive parents. So many of these kids are screaming for attention from their parents who ignore them. The parents always blame viedo games, tv shows movies but never take responsibility. I do believe some parents should NOT have children.
Both parents should be in prison along side him. Its just as much of a crime to not take care of your child, to not even have tried. Its break my heart
I like the channels that don’t pretend to care, because we all know the mundane lives of victims isn’t why we’re here or even relevant to any point beyond “the victims really matter”. Like thanks I’m not 5. It gets so repetitive when watching these videos back to back
I met Ethan a handful of times when his mother boarded her horse at the same farm as me. He was always just sort of like an awkward quiet teenager, didn’t say much. I did not know the family outside of horses, but from the very limited interactions I had, never would have guessed he would’ve gone to commit such horrors. Respect and love to the families that he tore apart.
What??? They had enough money to own and board a horse??!!....but had no money to care for their child? I hope both his parents get their asses ripped when they go to prison!
@@robynearlThey probably missed the time when they were single so they chucked the kid to the side and became neglectful and irresponsible parents. Wow...maybe if she would've included him in her equestrian adventures he would have had a sport or just a sense of acceptance with animals, if not humans? What selfish, pathetic, disgusting parents he has!
I don’t think they had the horse for very long, they were at my barn less than 6 months and sold him shortly after. The entire thing is insane and horrid.
@@CaffeineQueen-tn6kv I had 4 horses boarded at a farm run by a guy who turned out to be a pedo. It was awful. The amount of neglect and ignorance by the parents makes this situation more heartbreaking. Imagine how many lives would have been spared all this trauma if Ethan's parents actually paid attention to his behavior. Thoughts and prayers for Hana, Tate, Justin, and Madisyn.
I write for a small weekly newspaper in the sticks north of Detroit. I don't cover news in Oxford, but one community I do cover provided mutual aid to Oxford and a sheriff's deputy tearfully shared a story about how one of his fellow officers found Justin Shilling and stayed with him, holding his hand until he was transported to the hospital. “I want his parents to know I held his hand and spoke to him until we could get him removed from the building and to the hospital. I wanted him to know in that moment that he wasn’t alone and that someone was with him,” was what the officer said.

If someone had just cared for Ethan. Nobody wins. I like the way you carefully went through this story, covering so much information I never knew about this case. This one must have been tough to cover. Thank you for doing it in the Mr. Adrian style.
Thank you so much for covering this case. I've lost 2 of my friends because of this, and it took me a few weeks to build up the courage to watch this video. I watch your guys' videos frequently, so when I got the notification, my heart dropped to my feet. :( Hana, Madi, Justin, and Tate will never be forgotten in my mind, but it's so hard to believe that this actually happened when I see videos covering the case of the friends that I used to see.
I moved around way more than Ethan, watched slasher films from years old onward, and played what were considered violent games at the time, and was a latchkey kid. Yet I never hurt or killed anyone. There are tons of people I have met in person who never hurt or killed anyone. Not to mention all the killers and crazies you've covered that had good lives and loving homes.
@@Niac022 pretty hard to shoot people if your limbs don’t function. And nobody in the video ever blamed the video games, it was mentioned as one of MANY violent tendencies the kid had
I agree with what you are saying, and I also moved around a lot etc. etc. it doesn't mean just those factors is what makes people do these sorts of things. But it DOES seem to be a reoccurring theme in a lot of them. For this poor guy I think the major factors were absent parenting and being an only kid. Prolonged solitary confinement has been declared by the United Nations as tantamount to psychological torture. Can you imagine texting your MOTHER and she doesn't even bother texting back? No friends, no siblings, almost no parents, he was in solitary confinement from the day he was born. No wonder he cracked. There are studies showing that the brain undergoes physical changes under the effects of solitary confinement, with one study stating "isolation causes severe and permanent damage". It seems a common issue with lone shooters and the incel community in general.
none of those things on their own are responsible. but none of them help when a mentally ill child is left to raise himself, with parents who not only leave him alone, but don't even answer texts. i was a latchkey kid too. that's not the same as how this kid grew up.
No one wants to believe their child could commit such evil acts, but these parents definitely were negligent beyond belief. So sad all around. Congrats on the coffee!! Can't wait to try some!
Not a lot of channels do it in true crime videos, but I've seen a few, but I do appreciate you going over the victims in the closing so we remember them above all and humanize them how they should be
Being from the UK 🇬🇧 I remember this being shown on CNN and FOV. It's great to hear it all from beginning to end, a brilliant video and explanation. Thank you xx
His parents giving him a firearm reminds me of the Brenda Spencer case. I don't remember the specific wording but her dad gave her a firearm for birthday after she started displaying scary behavior. She stated she felt it was his way of asking her to harm herself because why would he give his daughter a firearm. These are giving me the same vibes.
Buying him a 🔫 when they already had 2 of them for many years was not significant. Had they not purchased a 3rd, he still could've gotten a hold of the other 2. Nobody knew the kid had mental health issues. Nobody believed he ever hallucinated - he joked about it one time 7 months before the tragedy. Everyone thought he was just sad his friend moved away & his dog died. He never had problems at school prior to the day of the tragedy. Nobody ever thought he was in distress. He seemed like a normal kid. When teachers found out EC was the perpetrator, they were SHOCKED.

What a tragedy that could have been avoided if Ethan's parents gave a damn about him. I'm glad his parents will be prosecuted. My heart goes out to all the victims & their families.
I keep thinking about how the most recent picture of him is him as a 10 year old. Shows you how little interest his parents had in him and documenting his life

This is a particularly egregious case of parental failure... I can't imagine the unabated rage of those kids' parents. They're so arrogant, I'm sure they still feel exonerated from blame.
This is so heartbreaking, Ethan was unloved, unwanted, lonely, left alone since age 6, he didn't stand a chance! Seriously.
The US is so messed up. I feel sorry for the good citizens. 😔

Just going to the supermarket was stressful, planning where to park my car, how to navigate unwanted men's advances and HOPING they don't have a gun. It was mentally draining. But now that I'm in Japan it's like a breath of fresh air. I'm a totally different person now.

Living in the Metro Detroit area, hearing about this sent shivers down so many parents backs. His parents failed him, and he decided perform irreversible and horrific actions. He cried out for help, but his parents ignored him. Imagine if they listened to him for once in his life. They could of saved each and everyone of those students and teachers.
Yes, they could have.
And he himself could’ve been saved. This is so sad.
Nobody knew the kid had mental health issues. Nobody believed he had ever hallucinated. Everyone thought he was just another sad teenager. What he wrote in his journal can't be taken as fact and his parents had no idea what he was contemplating.
The 1 & only time the school asked the parents to come in to discuss concerns, BOTH parents went to meet w/ their son & school staff. The school psychologist gave them a list of MH providers & 48 hours to make an appointment - which they agreed to do. Being a Michigan resident, I remember this case. One correction for the video though, the capital of Michigan is Lansing, not Detroit. Although Detroit does tend to hog most of the attention. Great coverage, as always Adrian.
Thank you! Came here to say this, but wanted to search the comments first. Had to rewind the video because I thought I had heard incorrectly.
thank you for covering this, Adrian. as a Michigander, I still feel the Oxford shooting heavily; I know somebody personally affected and I live over 2 hours away. less than a year later, a shooting at Michigan State University shook our state again and left some students with trauma from surviving two shootings within less than 12 months. I hope every person who was negligent in this case never feels peace. his parents even tried to evade police in a hotel room ffs.
Michigander? I always said Michiginer and nobody ever corrected me.
@@alexmajaxoriginally it was Michiganian. Then another state’s representative called us Michigander as an insult. We pulled a typical Michigan thing by adopting it and laughing it off. So either is accepted.
@@paulamcdonald6568
I like that, like Punk rock, you wear the insult and turn it around.
I feel you, and it's definitely different when it hits close to home. I live 10 minutes from Sandy Hook in CT, the community still hasn't recovered.
@@tearainey1
I don't even think those parents convince themselves their child wouldn't do that, I think they legit just don't care about their kid. Ethan was unstable, asking for help, and they didn't give a f*ck. Now that he got arrested and is gone forever they're probably thinking "Good riddance," honestly.
It feels like those kinds of parents see their child as a... lump of flesh or whatever hanging around them, and bothering them.
Thank you for the added information.
*mental
I know what it's like to be overwhelmingly alone. I'm sure that Ethan just wanted to feel loved like any other kid.
I don’t feel bad for him. He murdered four people, I feel bad for the four people that died.
I get that what he went thru was awful and no kid should go thru this, but these ppl just want sympathy and attention. To me it’s just a trick. Don’t fall for it this kid doesn’t deserve sympathy. Listen to those journal entries.
So gross you said that. He is a Murderer!
Thank you for sharing your story ❤️
God bless you 🙏 ❤
I hope you’re able to find them again ☺️
It does sound like your situations were similar, and you don't say if your mum was caring or not but the big difference between your mum and Ethan's is that yours had little choice and probably didn't want to be working every hour under the sun but had to, whereas Ethan's mum and dad not only worked but went out and partied and did lots of stuff in their free time without him.

I find it fascinating that Ethan (at least in the end) accepted responsibility and will be in prison for the foreseeable future and his parents skipped their arraignment, ran from the law and pleaded that they did nothing wrong. What Ethan did was horrible, but it sure sounds like he was practically begging for help and his parents were like, "nah"
plus they hired lawyers for themselves & did nothing for their son
It seems he was more mature than they were in some ways
@@nikkimclay5474A fancy lawyer could've helped the kid? 🙄
My god, I couldn’t even imagine how hard that would be for them.
They're a huge cause to this. It could have been prevented has they even slightly cared for him
@@BamBabyBrenda Agreed. I'm saying that I get the vibe that they wanted him out of their lives, so they planted a lot of seeds hoping something would happen and they could escape accountability by saying they 'didn't know'.

I have to wonder if there really is something in us at the beginning of life that truly determines which path we go down
I agree with you, not everyone that's neglected turns out to be a killer

Listening to Ethan's recording gave me the impression that he could've been a decent and smart person. It's such a shame that he wasn't born with caring and responsible parents. He was aware through all of it and his parents' were just like "eh, take care of it yourself and oh here, have a 🔫"
Rest in peace to all of the victims in this tragedy♥️
My thoughts too.
Maybe they didn’t like him and therapy would cost too much. They bought him a pew pew hoping with his depression , …well pew pew himself.

@@CaffeineQueen-tn6kv I had 4 horses boarded at a farm run by a guy who turned out to be a pedo. It was awful. Every law enforcement agency you can think of Fed & State & County raided the place and we couldn’t even get into the tackrooms or feedrooms until they were searched. That was 8 years ago and I still feel like I can’t wash the stink off.
I bet you still feel really weird about the whole thing. At least the horse is in the hands of another, hopefully decent, person.
All the best to you and your horses!
The amount of neglect and ignorance by the parents makes this situation more heartbreaking. Imagine how many lives would have been spared all this trauma if Ethan's parents actually paid attention to his behavior. Thoughts and prayers for Hana, Tate, Justin, and Madisyn.
If his parents had parented Ethan, his whole outlook on life would have been different
I don't think that's always the case. I watched a Ted Talk by Sue Klebold and I don't think she fits that mold.
@@zdiddy-dw9vg in this case, absolutely.
The parents should be held accountable for this terrible act!
Is there a info about their sentencing?
They are currently locked up. If you google him I’m sure you’ll find some updates.
@@dennis_burgess thanks, i dont google any idiot my friend. If all of us are all about Google we dont need any questions in comment section
▪︎ If we're now "guilty by association," we're all going to be locked up in no time for _other people's crimes!_
▪︎ The fair thing to do is add the appropriate charges to the penal code & charge ppl w/ what they _actually did,_ rather than with crimes they didn't commit, "but knew of or should've known of."
▪︎ Jennifer Crumbley was responsible for aspects of her child's behavior & was negligent in this case. She didn't take anyone's life, however.
▪︎ Parents of school sh00ters are typically charged _appropriately,_ with things such as neglect of a child, improper storage of a firearm, or criminal negligence. What the prosecutor charged here will open the floodgates for all kinds of charges to be filed against parents for their children's actions, or anyone DAs decide _should've_ known of a crime & stopped it before it occurred.
Congratulations on your own coffee brand! Thanks for always bringing us these videos, many that I have never heard of before. This is one that I am familiar with 💙
Mr. Adrian, just when I think you can't get any better, you prove me wrong. The empathy you show for each victim in this case is very moving. This case is heartbreaking.
Not to mention all the killers and crazies you've covered that had good lives and loving homes.
so, you didnt have the same mental issues. and presumably parents who love you. how are you comparing apples and oranges?
You can look at the Fathers' face and tell something is wrong. You can literally see it in his eyes.
she was having an affair, she was worse than him in neglecting Ethan
Not a lot of channels do it in true crime videos, but I've seen a few, but I do appreciate you going over the victims in the closing so we remember them above all and humanize them how they should be
Being from the UK 🇬🇧 I remember this being shown on CNN and FOV. It's great to hear it all from beginning to end, a brilliant video and explanation. Thank you xx
What's FOV?
His recording of him describing what he would do the next day was absolutely chilling
I appreciate how you talk in small lengths about the victims. Since they leave before they get the opportunity to create their own story.
This could have been easily prevented, I can’t believe his parents failed him every change they got.
Stop feeling bad for a murderer
His parents giving him a firearm reminds me of the Brenda Spencer case. I don't remember the specific wording but her dad gave her a firearm for birthday after she started displaying scary behavior. She stated she felt it was his way of asking her to harm herself because why would he give his daughter a firearm. These are giving me the same vibes.
Good point! I agree
Read People of the Lie by M. Scott Peck. He makes the case for the existence of evil people which includes parents like Ethan’s.
Oh myyy goood. You're right😢. So sad
Ethan is where he belongs but I'm so genuinely disgusted at these "parents" and the monster they single handedly created. Makes me so damn embarrassed to be from the same country.
He is. And he seriously thought his life sucked before! It won't be a walk in the park now.
Embarrassed to be part of the same race the Human race .
@@It-is-me...Melsie Honestly the structure in prison is probably better for him than his home was unfortunately.
@@creasedhorizon8931fair point
@@creasedhorizon8931 Possibly. His entire life will be structured now, and he will now be told what to do and when to do it for the rest of his life, day in and day out.
This is horrific! Thank you for the amazing job you did covering it!
Congratulations on your coffee company man. You totally deserve it. This story just emphasizes to me that not everyone should have kids and not all parents deserve their kids. So sad it ended like this. 😢 His parents deserve just as much punishment as he does.
What a tragedy that could have been avoided if Ethan's parents gave a damn about him. I'm glad his parents will be prosecuted. My heart goes out to all the victims & their families.
I keep thinking about how the most recent picture of him is him as a 10 year old. Shows you how little interest his parents had in him and documenting his life
Lots of people I know went to Oxford... it's scary how close to home this is. Thank you so much for covering it.
You should soon do a case on Disappearance of Tina Satchwell from ireland, who was missing since 2017 and she been found in her house just this month and also on the murder of ashling murphy, the trial is currently going on in Ireland 🇮🇪
Watch Irish Coffeehouse Crime for an Irish breakdown of Aishling's case and many more, she is fantastic.
This is a particularly egregious case of parental failure... I can't imagine the unabated rage of those kids' parents. They're so arrogant, I'm sure they still feel exonerated from blame.
Watching this video and the way his so called parents behaved, I am so grateful to have loving and wonderful parents.
I was going to make that minor correction as well.
This is so heartbreaking, Ethan was unloved, unwanted, lonely, left alone since age 6, he didn't stand a chance! The recording of him saying why didn't you stop me,is aiming at his parents, who knew he was mentally unstable and ignored his calls for help! If they had spent their money on Ethans mental health I stead of their horses,, they are totally negulent, rip all victims!! This is 😥 tragic
