A distant relation back in the days when settlers in the American west would write for mail order brides lost a bride to the stagecoach driver who was supposed to pick her up at the train station and bring her the rest of the way to his ranch. This was his second long distance romance that failed to bring him wedded bliss...his first prospective bride died of typhus during her journey. Finally, he gave up on finding a wife...though about a decade after he gave up, a wife found him.
Unfortunately, there’s a ton of kids that think they’re in real relationships even though they’ve never met and only spoke online. They literally behave like they’re together! They remain “faithful” to one another and actually tell each other, “I love you”. My loser stepson actually won’t go out and meet a real woman because he thinks he’s “dating” (exclusively) his online girlfriend! At 26 years old you’d think he’d want something real, something that has a real future? But no, he’s perfectly fine in his delusions

It's kind of funny how his goal was to eliminate "weak-minded" and "unworthy" people, yet in the end he eliminated himself too.
Yeah I mean he literally described himself as a Social Darwinist who would eliminate all that he see is unfit and I find that ironic. Because when he killed himself he probably considered himself unfit.
I mean he did say in his manifesto he didn't want to be "apart of this fucked up society" I'm pretty sure he was just suicidal and his suicide had nothing to do with him being unfit
I guess he knew he had done wrong and so he ended his life .

To be fair, mental illness does do that to you. You ultimately see yourself as unfit and unworthy when you suffer from depression and anxiety. Of course, his mindset and the way he went about things was completely fucked in every sense of the word.
Reminds me of the case on Reddit where a guy posted plans to severely torture/mutilate his roommate, who he freely admitted was very nice to him. The reason? His roommate was romantically successful while he was not.
A bunch of people figured out who the guy was and reported it, and everyone cried about that being an overreaction. Cases like this show why it's not.

I'd rather overreact than underact. I'm in NZ but have twice reported violent incidents through interpol and had S.W.A.T show up at US "friend's" door steps. Both times were hoaxes thankfully but I wasn't prepared to risk it

I read a story once about a homeless man taking someones wife. We live in an absurd world. The man who did this proved himself unfit. He is mentally unfit.
Im from Finland, and i remember when this happened. It was horrible, and not even a year later there was another school shooting in Kauhajoki, eleven people died including the shooter. Thankfully, that had been the last school shooting in Finland. Both of these cases are truly horrible, to be able to inflict that kind of pain and suffering to complete strangers disgusts me to this day... I was 13 when this happened, and 14 when the shooting in Kauhajoki happened. Rest in peace to all of those victims not only in these shootings but in all school shootigs in the world, you did not deserve what happened to you and i am truly sorry :(
me too, still living in Finland back then. They started to take threats like that more seriously after this case. What I find as a strange thing is that Finland is supposed to be one of the happiest countries yet has high suicide rate. Though I guess it has gone down compared to population from the 90's, but anxiety and other mental health problems are common.
I’m Finnish too, I was 14 when this happened in Jokela. This shooting truly chocked the whole country. Our highschool had a moment of silence every morning for a very long time after this, and I remember alot of parents even made their kids stay home from school out of fear that there would be copycat offenders. This was the first school shooting in Finland (to my knowledge) and it was one of the most gruesome things that has happened in our country.
It was a weird time, and watching this video I realize I still got some trauma from it. I remember me and my friends talking about what we would do in that situation, and the teachers would talk to us about recognizing warning signs.

Finnish school happened 1989 in Rauma.
Recently in Portugal, a student intended to perform a terrorist attack on his University with the intent to kill as many classmates as possible. He was stopped by Portuguese police before he could do it because days earlier, he told an American friend on Discord what he was intending to do.
His friend was worried he might be speaking the truth so he contacted the FBI. Afterwards, the FBI informed Portuguese police by sharing his online info and username, which they used to find his real name and location.
All of this to say that if you feel like someone you know from a different country is about to commit a dangerous harmful act, your best shot is to contact your country's authorities and provide them with relevant information!

In Spain where I live, I remember the police said, " if there's nothing broken then I can't make a report " meaning they want to see blood first

Thank you for writing this. I am from Portugal and when I reached the end of the video I thought of writing exactly the same because it is a perfect example of how contacting even from a different country works.
It was wild to see another UA-camr online call him out and talk about warning signs etc. He was completely right, unfortunately.

Living in Finland for 5 years now, it’s an extremely safe country compared to a lot of countries. Hearing this story was chilling to me and I actually didn’t know about this massive massacre. Thanks for covering stories from different countries around the world.

Nobody talks about it but his dad made a video about it. Look up "For Our Son" and it shows Erik's childhood photos. I cant even begin to imagine how horrible it must've felt for his parents.
Yet I think most of his racial thoughts were inheritated from his father, Erik is not 'pure blood' himself, but half asian ancestory.

This is weird to watch as a Finnish person. I'm one year younger than Pekka-Eric. I live several hours away from where this happened, but I remember when the news hit and at our high school (lukio) all school work halted and teachers talked about us with what was currently happening, I remember this being around 11am. The atmosphere was tense and quiet.
This was the first school shooting that ever happened in Finland, there has only been one after this. The perpetrator of the second attack took example from Pekka-Eric.
Hope nothing like this ever happens again here.
Its absoloutely devestating to hear and cover cases like these. The real frustration for me rests with the clear warning signs which remained unaddressed before it was too late... simultaneoiusly, I can see why they were never fully investigated. When I set myself the task of answering 'what to do in a situation where you observe concerning online behaviour' I was surprised to be left with no clear answer. The internet can be an extremely convoluted place to interact which leaves no definitive reporting process, especially when time is urgent.

i was 9 at the time so we weren't told in much detail so i only have vague memories og this happening, but my town is less than 30min drive away, so it kinda hit close to home geographically.
Yeah, this left the whole country traumatized no matter where you lived. Before this happened we thought we're somehow immune to mass school shootings as we'd never had one. Then we had the another one the next year! Those were scary times as you couldn't help but think that this is the new normal now. Ended up not being though.
Interesting tidbit: one Jokela survivor eventually became a politician and she's actively trying to better mental health services in Finland. She's currently a Member of the European Parliament and I voted for as she's really good!

You must have never dealt with police or anything before when it’s clear a serious situation is about to arise. I’ve literally been told by police in most cases they can’t do anything until it’s too late.
I’ve reported someone before in a different country. I found where he was living in Canada because I knew his phone number and contacted his local police office and emailed them his threats to kill people. They took action. He was mentally unstable and got him the help he needed.
As a Canadian, I thank you. The world is small now with social media and every country has mentally unstable people who can commit violence. It's important we all stay vigilant and report it to the local authorities ASAP.

I was on seventh grade when this happened, staying at home from school that day - I watched it happening live on the news channel. We had lot of school shooting threats afterwards, even police patroling at certain schools on the worst cases. Kauhajoki school shooting happened only year afterwards, devastating people even further.
Thank you for covering a case from my country though! I know our names and locations can be difficult to pronounce for english, but you did well! Out of all cases in Finland, I suggest you take a look at Myyrmanni Bombing or even lake Bodom murders, which are both quite notorious in here.
Oh yeah! Those 2 cases would work perfectly for this channel! Especially Bodom lake murders. Now that is a head scratcher.

I came to the comments section to see if anyone else noticed this. I definitely lol’d.
When Jokela happened, I was working in IRC-Galleria, back then a hugely popular social media platform in Finland. Pekka-Eric had a profile too and also posted his manifesto onto its blog. We were quickly following the real time events through IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and I remember how someone had hid into the bathroom at Jokela school and texted their loved ones (which were also related to IRC) how scared they were and what sounds they were hearing. It was very quiet, apparently. As we found out the identity of this assailant, we immediately contacted the police and told them everything we knew. We hid his profile and the manifesto so it wouldn't be visible for anyone and especially the press, as we understood also the family of this man have to be protected. Police didn't know a lot about the case yet, they only knew some rumours and had received some calls from the school. Maybe. I have no real knowledge of that. But we ended up speeding up the investigation quite a bit and within just an hour or so after it had started.
Pekka knew Finnish police would not hesitate to come after him and he seemed to lack a real concrete plan, so the whole thing was over fast. Afterwards we held crisis chats to young kids at IRC-Galleria and kids all over Finland were scared to go to school. I was sitting in trauma chats for a week before the first shock was over and after that week it was us moderators that had to start working with our thoughts. It's never an easy task to take down profiles of the deceased. Not in the case of Jokela, not with Kauhajoki, not with Konginkangas accident or the Tsunami in Phuket. It's hard.
That is the one thing that I think should be important to know about this thing: social media was in key part in all things related to this event.
It was the place for Pekka to get his thoughts through, and it was the thing that gave police a suspect within an hour after first calls for help, while people were still terrorized by a mad gunman. And it has since been the place which stores his manifesto and lets it be an influence to copycats. I has been a place for healing, it has been a place for helping others heal and it continues to be all this to everyone willing to listen. In good, and in bad.
i love how you always talk about the areas/countries in a positive light in the end of these videos. it's something i've never seen before but it's important. i think it's easy to see some countries as just the crimes or atrocities committed in them, especially if the country is smaller or less well known, or the crime committed was very severe. i saw this in a video about a japanese criminal too, it just makes me very happy for some reason.

The part that truly tears my heart is hearing the experience of his father. Not only did he also lose a child that day, he will forever be haunted by the atrocity that his child brought on the world. He had tried to get him help, yet he's still standing in his son's empty bedroom, and he can never mourn that loss without the disgrace, shame, and horror accompanying it. As a father, I cannot even fathom the isolating grief he must have, and continues to, go through.
His son was a nazi. I will accept what you say and feel empathy for him only if he is opposed to this ideology. On the other hand, if his sons ideology was accepted by him , then i really dont give a shit about his feelings.

Bullying really needs to be taken seriously and there should be some sorts of repercussions for bullies. I’ve just realised how many of these mass murderers were victims of bullying growing up. Parents need to teach their kids not to be bullies, bullying has ruined too many lives and yet still not seem to be taken seriously. RIP to the victims 😢

I have noticed something about individuals who are drawn to radical, racist ideology: these individuals lack self esteem, self worth, are or had been bullied, unpopular, suffer from depression or something else. So ,they seek out these wrong ideologies, I guess, as a way to not feel so negative about themselves.
As an adult it now amazes me all they bullying goes on in school and ignored by teachers, principles, and staff. I once even witnessed a female teacher in engage in very serious bullying. Adults shape the children into the future they become.

It's true for kids who are less educated and don't ever experience anything outside of their home county let alone state.
But a good amount have different ideologies than their parents. If we all just believed what our parents did how would we ever be innovative and progressive?
Your right bullying isn't good but guess what? It's going to be around for the rest of mankinds presence on earth. It's how you deal with adversity mostly that shapes you. Blaming bullies and other such factors are somewhat of an excuse for choices you yourself made in return.
I don't condone bullying. But we all have choices to make Im the aftermath of said bullying . It says alot about a person who chooses to go get a gun and shoot people because they were called a few names. I'd say they were fairly unstable to begin with.

As a parent I’d say, never let you child completely isolated . Keep talking, keep conversations, communication is important from early age. You might detect signs and help your child vent his issues. Clearly this kid was struggling alone. Sending a kid to a psychiatrist a drugging him doesn’t solve problems.
It does help. and they did say that they tried to help him themselves after they couldn’t get therapy
Taking antidepressants isn’t “drugging” kids, stop spreading these false narratives.
And how exactly would they go about doing it, if they’ve tried to do everything in their power already? Perhaps the parents didn’t think it would escalate to this extent. Majority of kids that isolate themselves end up fine in the end.
The issue here was that someone was more mentally unstable than anyone expected, and unfortunately didn’t recieve the help they needed in time.
Blaming the parents is not the way to go. Finding solution for more efficient queue for therapy is far better alternative.

This is something which I can never wrap my head around; From the state of Kerala, India, it never made any sense that you gotta wait in queues to get highly time-sensitive needs like medical help.

I'm not from Finland but my best friend is from Jokela and her big brother actually went to school with this guy when this happened - This is the first time I'm seeing someone with a bigger platform covering it in the true crime community. Thanks for shining light on more international cases :)

Hi Adrian, good video as always. Recently, something like this was avoided in my country (Portugal): a guy, a first year student at uni and victim of bulling, was planning a massacre. According to the news, he was talking about it on a Discord group, when somebody noticed and gave a hint to the FBI, that contacted our Polícia Judiciária. He was arrested and the police found weapons and a diary.
I guess that in cases like this, call "the FBI" of your country and give the informations you have, the autorities will contact the ones of the other country.
UPDATE: it seems he had a "girlfriend" that idolized Hitler and mass shooters like the kids from Columbine. His family is blaming her for influencing him, she says the idea was his.
That’s crazy, I’m so glad the person contacted the FBI who contacted the authorities of Portugal. This is good advice. 💚
Because these social media companies are all (or, largely) based in the U.S., it gives the U.S. authorities a certain amount of jurisdiction over threats and the like which happen on their platforms. In much the same way that anything on UA-cam falls under U.S. copyright law, if you're in the U.S., don't let where you think the suspected perpetrator is stop you from reporting.
@@Kimmaline , they have no authority in other countries, doesn't matter where the platform is based. However, they can pass information onto specific country authorities. Directly contacting local authorities is likely preferred if you believe time is of essence, less middlemen.
If it saves one innocent life, it is more than worth getting involved.
Great advice! Also, if worst case the report results in a false alarm, too bad, they kinda brought it upon themselves by talking so much rubbish.

What laws did they pass that would have stopped this? I’m not sure what Finland’s “free speech” laws are but other than his internet activity I don’t see any legal reason to have barred him from gun ownership

As a victim of bullying, I had one single teacher in my entire school life that knew I wasn't the one causing trouble. I only reacted to the kids picking at me because they were picking at me. Every other teacher I ever had somehow made me the bad guy because of my reaction. People say to stand up for yourself but every single time I ever did I was the one who went to the principals office. When the bully cries wolf you're basically screwed.
Though luck. My entire life be in school, college, or graduation I am picked on and shunned for not talking. I have seen the disgust nature of humanity and seriously I hate humanity. Bbut I need them aao I can use them for my benefit. Only good my parents always support me. If not I woulld have killed someone or myself long ago

I concur bullying is not taken seriously in school. Students and teachers bullied me. It wasn't until after graduation and away from that environment that I started to thrive. God help anyone who bullies my children. They will unleash hell.

His misuse of the antidepressants probably made his mental state much worse. Those medications must be tapered up and down or else there can be serious problems.

I happen to be a Finnish student and because of my field of work I had to take a course in workplace safety. The man who led the class was an ex EMT who responded to the shooting and the thing that stuck with me is him telling about the bravery of the teachers. They were locking and barricading doors to make shure Auvinen didn't get to certain parts of the building while they were getting shot at. Absolute heros!

I'm from Finland and even if this is "the happiest country in the world" bullies are freeroaming around causing mental health problems to the victims themselves. It feels like the victims are punished. They move schools when the bullies should be banned. They have to take all of the bullying... The mental health system sucks too. It takes way too long to even get in. I'm not making excuses for him. He's a piece of shit but I really just want to point out these problems.

@@missbearlockholmes I think it might be because most of the health care places are free. School is free from elementary school to as far as high school nowadays. I'm pretty sure the ranking also comes from the fact that the finnish population is pretty small. But the biggest problem we have is definitely mental health (in my opinion at least).
@@missbearlockholmes The happiness index means nothing. If anything, it ranks the APPEARANCE of happiness. You know what causes much of mental health problems? Having to appear happy all the time when there are problems underneath. I bet mental health issue is becoming problematic in Finland because of this. Besides, how does an external observer poll a population to accurately determine their level of happiness. Only the individual can know accurately, and they are not going to report honestly just because they are asked to rate their own happiness.

Another example would be South- Korea… just the mere fact of having to pretend you’re all smiles and happiness while down below you’re extremely suffering is like causing/ evoking an unimaginable damage to your mental health… our society breeds people with irreparable health issues, capable of anything… it’s like cancer slowly spreading and infecting everything… In Germany where i’m living it is disastrous when it comes to getting an appointment to a psychologist or psychiatrist. @@DarkPsychoMessiah Reporters were approaching the high schoolers while the situation was still ongoing. The minors were trying to get to safety and to the medics but the reporters would block them and ask invasive questions. Weeks after the incident kids in the area were approached by media and asked inappropriate questions. I lived in the same neighborhood as the assailant and was questioned multiple times by reporters (I was 8 years old at the time).
Also most of the medias focus was on the gruesome details of the event and the shooters private life/ ideology. He was the main focus and became almost like a celebrity. Later on his actions inspired another school shooting, about a year later.
Since then Finnish media has condemned their actions and especially how they approached the minors.

It was headline news in the UK. I remember watching it reported on TV and being surprised that some European countries have relaxed gun laws. I thought only America did that.

@@avokaado This was around 15 years ago tho and Finland has been the happiest country in the world for the past 4 years now, things have clearly been changing for the better I'd say. Proper gun laws, easy access to healthcare (including mental help), social safety nets and so on definitely lower the amount of crimes being committed, on top of our jail system being based on rehabilitation instead of just punishment which lowers the chances of redoing crimes by a huge margin. Wish we could do something about the insane amount of alcoholics (which is around 400 000 finns), since that is one of the biggest leading causes for stabbings and other crimes here.

While I agree that school bullying needs to be addressed, the bigger issue is the internet. Not only are they being bullied in school, but come home and bullied over the internet. Or they're in an echo chamber of hate, depending on what forums they're in.
People need to drop the negative stigma that psychology/therapy/counseling has had for decades. While mental health is taken slightly more serious now than in the past, you still have more people that say that they agree with mental health, but then won't go see a therapist themselves. Or won't send their child to see one because "I don't want people getting the wrong ideas about my child."
But it all comes down to mental illness!!! It's so underrated worldwide. I've seen it happened to people I know and nobody gives a shit till something happens!
I agree bullying needs to stop. But most kids who are bullied do not go on to shoot up their schools. I, for one, never even considered it. It, just like “mental health,” is one of the things that gets brought up again and again, and yet when we look closer at the lives of these dipsh*ts, we see narcissism and a general disdain for people, not depressed, anxiety-ridden people who finally snap after years of abuse by classmates. Like the guy said, the warning signs were all there, and it wasn’t the bullying and anxiety, it was the hateful views and grandiose sense of self.
Bullying is an issue but it really comes down with the parents being more aware and apart of their child's life. If my son exhibited ANY of these behaviors or traits, I would give him more attention and professional help. And NEVER be allowed a gun.

I think it's important to point out that being shy, reserved, or unsociable does not mean you're a psychopath, or will be one. It's one of the reasons shy or reserved people are bullied or picked on, because people brand them as such. Some shy or reserved people have trust issues, some are worried they will make themselves look stupid, and sure, some cannot relate to people very well. It does not mean they are psychopaths. Einstein was reserved - was he a psychopath?
Psychopaths come with many faces. If we knew how to spot a psychopath, these types of things would probably never happen.
i used to be called a psychopath when i was young, and i struggled with people. They called me a school shooter and such. I used to believe I was a psychopath because i liked watching videos of people dying with no shame or guilt. Turns out i'm autistic, discovered at the age of 18, and I struggle to feel empathy for others because of it.

Both my older brother and my boyfriend live in Finland so was really interesting seeing a case coming from there. Its a shame no one took the warning signs seriously, but unfortunately people can kinda say and do what they want on the internet...most never actually go through with any of it but sadly a few do and we end up with situations like this.
Yeah it took two mass shootings in Finland before they started taking these online threats and warning signs seriously.
A couple of years later the Finnish police actually opened a service called "Nettivinkki". I don't know if Jokela and the school shooting in Kauhajoki (which was really similar to Jokela) had to do with it, but Nettivinkki is meant specifically to inform on suspicious stuff on the internet, when calling 112 might feel like overreacting. If the service was opened earlier it might have saved the lives of the victims of both shootings.
Im glad to hear they took measures to make it easier for people to contact authorities and hopefully prevent things like this happening again
It was 2007, Facebook had been out for like a year, no one was ready for everyone to have access to social media like that, yet alone the kids.
Just putting this out there, I took several antidepressants, all eventually maxing out at the highest dosage allowed, from age 16-19. Even trying to remember the exact ages while writing this was hard because of how much medication messed with my memory not to mention my speech and motor skills. I was forgetful and zoned out. I’m not saying this is what happens to everyone, but for me antidepressants literally put me in a daze. Even to the extent that when I decided to just stop taking them cold-turkey (not recommended) after some days I couldn’t tell you if I’d been off them for a week, a month, several months, but I was literally in the middle of a shift at work one day and have a distinct memory of feeling like I’d just out of nowhere Id realized I had snapped back into reality. Like, I felt emotional instead of numb, colors looked bright, it was very hard to describe and kinda strange but it’s so nice to not feel that numb way anymore. While my memory from 16-19 is all over the place and fuzzy at best, immediately after stopping and prior to taking the pills Ive had very clear memory. They need to do more research on these pills before giving them to kids, stop giving out such high doses, just so many precautions need to be put in place because it’s clear there’s a serious problem.

This is a small thing but, thank you for emphasizing that being inconsistent and turbulent when taking SSRIs and antidepressants can cause pretty severe problems. Consistency and time is necessary to really evaluate whether a medication like these actually works and is effective.

opv, been on ssri like zoloft for 4 years and it's a shitty medication that doesn't really do much but make you emotionless. there's actually not enough research on how ssri like zoloft cure mental illness and most of the time it is placebo effect on itself that makes us feel better, not the ssri. there are long listed side effects on ssri that hasn't been improved and i don't understand why it's not. i've lost my emotions and almost turned into a psychopath due to lack of empathy and compassion, i had to get off. i would always suggest therapy like cognitive behavioural therapy before taking any medication and if you're not unsure, don't go on medication because the side effects is shitty and it makes you feel worst than before. i've been off of it, still facing side effects but getting better. it may work for some but it's definitely questionable.

Imagine failing your suicide, laying on the cold floor and slowly dying for two hours. The overwhelming pain, the feeling of failure, the frustrating knowledge that he still had a lot of ammunition left lying around right next to him and could've continue his spree if he was smarter, the reality around him slowly starting to lose cohesion and becoming more like a fever nightmare, regretting every decision he's ever made, begging for this torture to be over. Lots of school shooters manage to kill themselves quickly and not suffer much, but I think it's safe to say Eric got his karmic punishment.

You by the way have to be careful when interacting with internet "psychopaths". Like 15 years ago, before Facebook, I was an admin in a gaming and anime community. There I at some point got a report regarding a 28 year old dude, harrassing a 13 year old girl.
I contacted the girl and she confirmed the whole story. Apparantly she didn't know his age, they met and she literally left before he could even great her. But she said that he bothers her with private messages (which she allowed me to check) and that he calles her and her family (even the grand parents) frequently to get her on the phone. She said her parents alreaddy went to the police to report that guy, but nothing ever came of it.
Seing him being active in my forum I felt like it's my responsibility to step in. My forum was there so people could find others with similiar interests, and so people can discuss their favorite games, anime and more or less every other topic they like. It was not meant as a hunting ground for potential pedophiles. So I contacted the guy, told him that a friend of hers told me what's going on, that I remove his ability to write messages to others and that I block him from every topic (sub-forum) that's mainly used for people to make new friendhsips.. like the spam-forum, the forum games.. forum.. and all that kind of stuff.
I had nothing that I could show the police, exept some private messages. So that's what felt right at the moment. Banning him was also an option, but then he could have just created a new account without me noticing, so I didn't do that. Instead I did what I wrote before and made clear to him, that I keep an eye on him and that he will get in trouble with me, should his questionable behaviour continue.
As a result he, for some odd reason, tried to convince me that she loves him. He even created a website about their relationship, a website that straight up looked like something a private investogator or serial killer would put on their wall. It was full of screenshots of messages, followed by him noting his interpretation of said messages, followed by red lines leading to more chat messages and so on.
I told him that he just convinced me that he is a potential danger for others, and I even reported that website to the police. Then I became his targed. All of the sudden my phone gang every few minutes, for days. He called me, my uncle, my grand parents.. basically everyone I share a surname with. He demanded them to make me talk to him, sometimes discuised himself as a telemarketer and it went on for days.
At this point I was really worried aboout my families safety. I went to the police again, and the police told me that they can't do anything about it.
After a week or so I was in the german equivalent of a high school. We were talking about the internet and I just brought this topic up, asking if anyone had an idea what to do. My teacher obviously said I should talk to the police. But, and I am very grateful for that, three of my class mates talked to me after school and they offered that we go and visit this guy in real life, to scare him off. I had his phone number and it was no issue to get his adress from there.
In the end, the four of us drove to that guy and rang on his door. Once I told him who I am he immediatelly tried to close the door, but my class mate pushed against the door, holding it open. Then they basically told him that this is just a warning, and that they will come back if he won't stop harrassing that 13 year old girl and my family. I did not hear of him again, and he did not log in to my forum after that day.
It was not the best solution, but I'm still grateful to my class mates. I was really worried about the safety of my family at the time. I've seen first hand how fast they can shift their attention from their previous victim to someone they percieve as a threat.

As I've been watching through your videos (starting from the newest), I have wondered whether my country is featured in any of them. This case in particular I thought might be somewhere -- and so it was.
We still remember this tragedy as one of the worst horrors Finland's seen this millennium. Until then, school shootings were, to us, something that only happened abroad, usually in the States. This case made them all too real a possibility in our country as well (and there have been multiple ones after this one).
PS. Good job on the pronunciation of Finnish names. It is always fun to hear non-native speakers pronounce Finnish.

Ya know, you make this point in almost all of your videos, about how the victims woke up that day not knowing it would be their last, and it hits home every single time you say it. I can’t imagine having my life ended so abruptly and unexpectedly. Truly heartbreaking for the innocent victims, and a strong reminder to everyone that every day is precious. It really could end just like that. Much love to the families of the victims.

I’m from Finland myself and i still remember the horror and shock i felt when i first heard about this. I actually heard about what Auvinen did years after it had happened, as i was only 2 years old back in 2007, but when i heard about it, it was one of the most shocking things i had ever heard as that made me realize that these kinds of horrible things can happen even in a relatively safe country like Finland.
Even today this case still disturbs and bothers me. The warning signs were there, but nothing was done. I can’t even fathom how awful this must feel to the loved ones of the victims and to the shooters family. All i can really do is be grateful that i’ve never had to experience something like this.
I was 17 when this shit went down. It really shook us and shattered our sense of security. Tuusula is about sixty kilometres from where I lived.

Thank you for covering this. I've been subscribed for a while now, but didn't think you would ever cover any cases from Finland (although I think there are quite a few interesting ones, both unsolved and solved).
Whenever I hear about Jokela, it still hits me hard, because back in the day I was unfortunate enough to have my first boyfriend be a guy who idolized Pekka-Eric Auvinen and was a very potential school shooter.
I visited him a couple of days after the Jokela shooting, and this creep had built an altar in his bedroom for Auvinen, complete with a framed photo, lit candles and a cross. He also proudly showed me his (or more likely his dad's) gun that day and ranted for a long time about how Auvinen was in the right and how "undeserving people" should die. Like Auvinen, he had also been bullied at school, his family was poor and he had failed to get into high school, so he was extremely bitter, angry and jealous of his peers. I guess he related with Auvinen and his manifesto.
At the time, we had been dating for something like 3 months, but I knew him from middle school (we used to be classmates) and back then he was always the shy kid, had never acted violent and had seemed pretty harmless. Looking back, though, he was a very insecure and jealous boyfriend from the beginning, I wish I had realized that faster. I felt extremely uncomfortable by these views of his and wanted to end the relationship but I was too scared of what he would do if I did.
His anger towards other people, especially his more successful peers, only grew in the following months and he eventually started to show signs of paranoia and some kind of mania as well, becoming more and more erratic, irrational and quick to anger, going on long rants about how he wanted to kill and torture the people who he thought had wronged him etc. He even started to throw angry remarks at me because I was succeeding at my studies and he would constantly accuse me of cheating on him if I was spending time with my friends.
When I finally got the courage to end the relationship couple months later, he became violent and threatened to "come to my school, shoot everyone and slit the head teacher's throat" (who he thought had "unjustly denied" him a place at my high school - when the simple truth was that his grades just weren't good enough to get in). He stalked and harassed me for months after the breakup, and when I was taking my final exams, I was so scared that he would come to the school and shoot everyone while we were basically locked in the gymnasium like sitting ducks. I was sure he would follow in the footsteps of his idol, and I felt so guilty about breaking up with him because it felt like I was putting other people in greater danger.
Thankfully, he never ended up doing anything, but the threat was very real and I feel like it was an extremely close call. I did think about reporting him to the authorities at the time, but since the local police did nothing when I told them about him being violent and stalking me after we broke up (they said it's just "puppy love" and "teenagers being dramatic"), I didn't feel like they would take me seriously about his school shooting threats either. I should have reported him anyway, though.
If anyone reading this is in a similar situation that I was in, please report stuff like this to the police or other authorities as soon as safely possible. And stay safe, especially if you need to leave an abusive or otherwise potentially dangerous individual. It's better to be safe than sorry, better to report just in case than not report and hope nothing bad happens.

@@user-kj1pq6zh3x At the time when he made the threats he was 17 if I remember correctly, he should now be in his early 30's. Haven't really seen him since I graduated as I moved away, so I have no idea how his life has turned out since. I can only hope he has not hurt anyone, but based on my experiences people like that tend to hurt others in some way or another eventually.

Very little... people intent on/willing to be violent on the innocent will find a cause/reason for their violence. Schools just happen to be a great opportunity. Lots of vulnerable and unarmed victims.

Teach morality in the form Judeo -Christian values, Buddhism, Confucianism at the least. Secondly, teach your children how to defend themselves with martial arts and don't allow your governments to disarm you. As a Finn this was an interesting watch, I remember when this happened and it was only one town over from where I lived back then. You covered this sad case very well, showing material that I hadn’t seen before. Sadly, another school shooting would take place in Finland a year later after this one, I think the shooter had admired Auvinen, too.

I think the only positive impact from this case is that the police now actively monitor the common internet forums (ylilauta (finnish 4chan), youtube, twitter and such) for people who are in risk of radicalization. What Pekka did surely broke the veil of safeness in Finland, his massacre was basically the first school killing event in Finland.
I remember shortly after this happening there was a threat aimed at my school and all the students were evacuated for the day, the threat turned out to be fake though.

Nice report. Very thorough. As a Finn myself, I've looked into this case and there aren't many details you missed.
When you actively miss doses of your medication, it's called MISuse, not ABuse. We also call it an intentional omission. Abuse is when a drug is used for reasons other than for what a dr has prescribed it for, in a way that could cause harm. E.g getting high. Misuse is when you fail to adhere to the medication regimen.
I love abusing my meds through neglect by refusing to take them on a consistent basis, inducing a foster childesque sense of mistrust in them.

Agreed! Can't wrap my head around why bullies still exist after dozens of these very similar stories all around the world! Perhaps it should be made mandatory for all schools to show a few of these video's and have these anti-bullying lessons every year.
Yes I think it's a combination of first being bullied and then also becoming more and more isolated that can cause individuals to develop some very antisocial or even hatred for humanity. And if that goes on for too long they might act on those thoughts. It's like a "individual not embraced by the village will burn the village down to feel it's warmth" scenario. If they had atleast one friend they could unwind with I think that's usually enough to make them not go completely batshit from constant isolation. I was in that guys shoes myself and I can say from experience that the more isolated you feel you will over time start to go crazy. And there was times where I had zero friends and those are the times where your mental health just tanks into oblivion and dark sinister thoughts swirl around in the head. Having a friend to get your thoughts to a more positive place is very important. But having friends that also share those extremist views is just gonna make things worse for everyone involved so just to clarify: Friends that encourages hope and your positive traits = good, friends that encourages your hatred and bad traits = bad. That's why I think it's so common to hear that when a guy goes and does something like this it's almost always mentioned that he was part of some social media where people encouraged it. Extremist sites or such. They think those people are their friends but a true friend would not want you to keep suffering by promoting a doomist view of life and instead try to help.

It's difficult to prevent these incidents even if one sees the warning signs. Unfortunately, the laws in most countries are not crime prevention-oriented. Hence, even if someone approaches the authorities, they wouldn't take it seriously or express their inability to take any action since no crime has been committed. In the US you can be arrested for the intent to murder people. Even if you don't get the chance to, if there is enough evidence showing a plan and such....thats enough.
I know a kid who was put in jail for writing a fake kill list. Unfortunately for him he added some pretty important people (typical angry at the world 15 yr old bullshit). He was sent to juvie for make a "threat" plus a bunch of other bs too.

Omg I didn't even read the title before I opened this, thank you for doing a Finnish case! Jokela was the second school shooting ever in Finland and it was almost 20 years since the first one, so it was really devastating and really affected our feeling of security. I was in middle school at the time and lived maybe 20 km away.
And sadly, even though this case raised the discussion about mental health care, we haven't really gotten very far in 15 years and getting adequate mental health care is still hard.

Isolation leads to the overdevelopment of the dark side of the individual’s personality. His parents could have socialized him from an early age with outdoor or team activities. With team activities he could have learned his strengths and weaknesses and how to lose/win with grace. He is a product of leaving a child to raise themselves. Childhood was not meant to be experienced in isolation because development comes from the friction with others and the coping skills learned.
Exactly, he's a victim like all the rest, a victim of circumstance and this was the consequence of that.
