Torterra may not be the best Pokémon competitively, but he makes up for it in other ways. He's great with kids, and his presents are always thoughtful.
Bug is one of the most unfortunate types in the world of competitive Pokemon. In the early generations bug types were very limited defensively and had extrealy scarce offensive options. With the introduction of stealth rocks to the game, with punished all rock weak pokemons including bug, they suffer even more. Viable competitive bug types tend to be a rarity, but they do exist, sometimes bug types can overcome all of these roadblocks if they have enough advantages in other areas or if they are blessed with powerful complementary types. Let's take a look at all the relevant bug types in competitive singles for every single generation and how this type has evolved and adapted to it's enviorment throughout the years.
I wish Infernape got a buff at this point. In gen 9 empoleon has roost and flip turn now while torterra got shell smash. It's not the worst starter of the group that probably still goes to torterra but I wish it got something more like maybe buffing iron fist.
it could also just get a new ability. adaptability makes thematic sense, and at first glance it seems like it would be reasonable. one of infernape's greatest weaknesses is how its neutral stab hits aren't powerful enough without doing half your health with recoil and life orb, adaptability would fix that without eliminating counterplay since it wouldn't have brainless ways to nuke "resistances" like gen 9 mons lol
Infernape has the biggest movepool out of the 3 starters. It got additional moves this gen such as Knock Off, Zen Headbutt, Switcheroo and Scorching Sands. Its movepool is already perfect
Iron fist is fine as it is, it would be better to replace their hidden ability with something else. For example berserk or adaptability. Both make sense thematically. Maybe technician could be an option to consider too
Infernape has provided us vital infomation of the capabilties of Iron Mugulis we now know it has access to Endavour, Quick Attack, it's signature move Half-Full and coverage in Scald. To think Iron Mugulis has acccess to such an effective coverage move to prevent ground types from walling it. If he had access to Scald this entire team he could have 1 shot great tusk with a scald but instead he chose to toy with us by using F.E.A.R stratagies. Iron Mugulis is truly a sadistic mug.

Hi Jimmy - Thanks for featuring clips from my tournament games throughout the video. While Empoleon provides a lot more defensive utility and is probably considered slightly better in terms of viability, Infernape's coverage and speed has to be considered on every DPP team. One of the reasons why Latias is so good is because it's one of the most consistent checks to Infernape resisting both Fire/Fighting STAB. My favorite Infernape which I ran twice in SPL runs Naughty nature with Mach Punch and Stone Edge for coverage to hit Zapdos and Gyarados.
You mentioned that Latias got unbanned from Gen 4 OU recently and has caused a lot of shake up. I didn't know that, so a video describing how Latias has fared so far and how others responded to the threat would be cool.
The thing that surprises me about Empoleon is that it's still the _only_ Water/Steel Pokemon. You'd think they'd have made some Pokemon based on a ship or something by now. As expected though, two of the best defensive types in the game go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Gen 4 was the first time I decided to pick a grass starter. With my Turtwig, I make it to the first gym where he just learned razor leaf. "Alright!" I thought, a better grass move to attack rock types. I then fight a geodude and the move missed. I tried again. It missed again. I try a third time. It missed AGAIN. This 95% accurate move missed three times in a row. I was furious. My first experience using a grass type starter there immediately ended. I restarted the game and chose Chimchar and immediately loved it.
It's also great that they finally gave both Infernape and Empoleon healing moves in Gen 9. Infernape with Drain Punch and Empoleon with Roost. Empoleon with Roost is a big one. I also want to mention Torterra getting Shell Smash and Headlong Rush is a huge win depending on how you look at it. Let's not forget when playing through the game casually, Torterra is awesome. Free Earthquake when it evolves for Grotle.
Infernape is still pretty good, don't get anyone wrong. Empoleon is still definitely up on top in terms of competitive play, however. Which starter is best outside of competitive play is 101% subjective.
It's interesting how all gen4's starters learn stealth rock, it almost felt like game freak was promoting this game changing move also introduced in this gen.
The history of how life orb has been viewed competitively would be interesting, as time goes on players appear to have become more and more bothered by that 10% recoil on every move. 10 years ago a team without life orb was unthinkable, now a lot of teams don't use it at all

Not to mention that while decently physically bulky it's specially frail, so Fire & Ice attacks shred through it easily. While it does have Synthesis, Giga Drain and Leech Seed and tools like Rock Polish, Earthquake, Seed Bomb, Frenzy Plant and Wood Hammer, that's small comfort when it's outsped & oneshot by most common special attackers. I do like Torterra (it was my first starter) but sadly its flaws unfortunately hold it back from be OU viable.
Empoleon reminds me a bit of a mini Gen 3 TTar actually. Basically it has a bunch of different sets that can all work depending on your team. It's not quite as splashable as Tar, but it just slots in nicely to a lot of different teams.
I'd say while I have always been an empoleon type of person the visual design of torterra is super cool. maybe in a future if they do a legends arceus kind of treatment to them we might see a version of them with a different vibe as well
I remember the old days of NetBattle And Pokemon Online sims (I was a broke kid and never had a DS) I always chose Empoleon over Infernape. I was ecstatic when I finally was able to catch one myself in SV, and even shiny hunted the whole line.
In Gen 4 Draft with Latias, Jirachi and Suicune usually being banned, Infernape is literally a top 4 Pokemon together with Metagross, Dragonite and Zapdos and its definitely the most versatile attacker in the game
It's probably nostalgia, but the gen 4 starters are my favourite of all time, with Infernape being easily my favourite Pokemon ever. Platinum wasn't my first Pokemon game, in fact it came when I was "too old" for Pokemon (I was 11) but gen 4 was to me the greatest.
I always thought that Empoleon was a unique pokemon in the fact that it is most times a defensive tank with now 11 resistances. It never seemed broken because it had subpar physical stats and bad speed that wouldn't be beneficial in trick room, and the mid physical stats are readily apparent when its 3 only weaknesses are super common offensive and coverage types with only two of the 3 being most associated with physical attacks. Tldr: funny penguin cool
It has been said that Torterra is not great, but the Past Paradox form of Torterra, Great Trunk, has recently been seen snooping around Gen 8 OU. It is believed that this could be an opportunity for identity fraud against Great Tusk and Iron Treads using its name, which refers to its tree, in an effort to make a form of Torterra viable in OU. This is a disaster.

I think infernape would have been better as a dedicated physical attacker, the combination of fire and fighting type just screams that it wants to be physical (fighting obviously being a primarily physical attacking type, and fire not being able to be burned is amazing for physical attackers), along with both flare blitz and close combat being amazing stab physical moves, if you made it relly fast and hit really hard on the physical side it would probably be op, and i mean look at it, aesthecially it just looks like a really fast hard hitting pokemon.
Torterra remains bar-none the coolest starter design, and top-10 for some of the best pokemon designs in the franchise. But I also remember training one in Gen5 when I was trying to make a team to fight friends at school, and it absolutely never pulled its weight. I ended up dropping it for a Roserade.
As someone who doesn’t play competitive, I’m confused why torterra seemingly isn’t even worth talking about. I always picked turtwig when playing because torterra seems to live every hit an ingame foe can throw at it and stab earthquake fucks up just about everything
With the powers of TMs, Empoleon can definitely freeze Torterra with a good Ice Beam. Idk about Infernape though, I guess if it lives the Close Combat somehow then Surf or Hydro Pump could potentially drown it.

Aqua Jet is a must have for any water starter. Torrent + Aqua Jet is such a sweet combo.

Always bothered me that with Earthquake (Torterra) or Close Combat (Infernape) Empoleon can’t check any of the starters in Gen 4 reliably
With the powers of TMs, Empoleon can definitely freeze Torterra with a good Ice Beam.
Idk about Infernape though, I guess if it lives the Close Combat somehow then Surf or Hydro Pump could potentially drown it.

I remember hearing about serperior being a menace. That might just be later gens though.

I know this is a Gen 4 video, but it's odd to me you used Gen 3 OU footage that was clearly created by AI since we all know Blaziken taking 2 KOs in 1 game is impossible.
