In today's video, I head out with my camera to check up on Storm Awren, which battered the east coast of Scotland with 100 mps winds. I then headed north to Aviemore to see some of the snow the storm deposited on higher grounds.

I'm 3 miles outside Stirling, and it's so grim.100mph winds.power cuts trees down .madness. l couldn't open my door for the force of the wind.didnae like it at all.cant beli you were out in that.x

My da always loved going out to watch lighting storms from the safety under our deck/balcony. But fear of hurricanes and tornados is really more healthy respect!
ETA: look up "storm at LeHinche, January' I think it was 2017. The waves were breaking over the sea wall and spraying higher than the 3 story houses across the street. Luckily I was in Dublin, not the usual west coast

It would be really cool if you came down here in Spring for tornado season. You could do a ride along with the Texas Storm Chasers. I think you would have a blast!
My husband and I got a call from a regular customer during a hurricane. My husband drives a cab. This guy got caught on a mini bike in the storm. So we drove across town to get this guy, past downed power lines, traffic lights out, and downed trees everywhere.Took over 4 hours to get back home. Should have taken 20 minutes tops. Never, ever again.

Crazy storm! That's a proper hurricane! Beautiful snowfall and sunset filming at the loch! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. The bird preserve will be great next spring. Hopefully you can spot the elusive red squirrel and the capercaillie! They look like Ruffed Grouse we have here in Utah. It's really nice to see you enjoying filming again! Love to you and Teka💕🏴

The snow after the storm was beautiful. The wind rain wind n waves looks like our Gulf Coast hurricanes. We awake to no power no water a day or two with downed trees nmpower lines. Thanks for sharing your storm videos.

Now listen, you be careful with that weather. Those little golf carts you call cars can be blown away in seconds and be instantly crushed under the weight of a mature tree. It's all fun and games until we lose a Scot. Have your wee fun and then go home and be safe. 🤗 The key to driving on ice is, you can turn the wheel, or you can brake, but you CANNOT do both. Definitely an acquired skill. Be careful out there. 🥰

I’ve been caught in hurricanes in Florida and Texas. When you see the raw power of nature it is quite daunting. We’ve been very fortunate to have good weather in our travels to Scotland. We have tornadoes and derechos here in the Midwest USA. They can wreak havoc with trees and buildings here.
I thumbed this up but for some reason I don't recall watching this video. Shaun, this is also an amazing video! The scenery was absolutely picturesque. Scotland is definitely beautiful. Wow! -- BBC News -- You're famous! (Deservedly so, of course) -- Congrats! So amazing to see the dramatic contrast between the raging force of the storm at night, and the deep stillness of the snow-coated Highland wood the next day-- sealed finally by the warm sunset hues over the lake. A feast for the senses -- which you've brought to us beautifully!
You have to love it - 'they have issued a red alert, so let's go for a wee drive' SUCH A BOY THING!!!!! All my mother buttons are being pushed!!!!!
A couple on UA-cam called The Travel Trolls we’re on the coast near you very frightened by this storm. They are not fun in the least, and can be very dangerous. They were in their RV. No idea why you wanted to experience one. I live far inland in the desert and in my area had a 75mph wind gust! Yes a wind gust and it blew my tree in the front yard into the roof of my house. Getting repairs for the damage. But I was alone, husband at work, it was very scary. Please be care Shaun. It can blow your small car off the road. Imagine what happens with big trucks!! Nothing to play with. Stay safe please Shaun!! ❤️❤️❤️

Category 1 hurricane: 74 to 95 mph
Category 2 hurricane: 96 to 110 mph
So you essentially experienced a category 1 hurricane. 😎
I'm from New England and well acquainted with hurricanes, blizzards and nor'easters. I love being at the shore during a good storm (but can do without the snow and ice).

@@shaunvlog The winds in your video were crazy enough that it could technically be a blizzard. My experience of blizzards results in knee to hip deep snow, probably wet and heavy.
I admit to chuckling at your dusting, but acknowledge that any amount of ice on a road can be dangerous. Glad you had safe travels.
Thank you for the excellent coverage of the storm and its aftermath, Shaun. Also, the storm's power let us enjoy a more powerful brogue than usual. Be there more storms! :) If you are up to it, you might consider hooking up with some of the best tornado chasers in "tornado alley" in the US to experience epic meteorological events from mid-May into early June: funnel clouds, tornados, hail storms, wall clouds, major lightning storms, shelf clouds, mammatus, anvil-heads, etc.
Nice one shaun , im sure you'll get a few more subs from the bbc news 😉 , the storm was mental , got called back from our deliveries in dundee to the mail sorting office at 2 in the afternoon and it the snow was pretty bad at that time. Working in carnoustie next day and the power was off for most of angus for over 24 hours

I suspect what you heard going "hooooo" was an owl. Had to verify, but there are five resident species in the U.K., with the Tawny Owl being common in Scotland. I'm a birder!
It doesn’t take very high water to stall your engine and leave you stranded, unless you have a vehicle set up to ford shallow streams. A foot of water can float some cars away. We get a lot flooding here.
True - I’ve forded rivers in my car but couldn’t deal with ocean waves

I would think most Americans would dream of avoiding that weather. You are a born 'storm chaser' Shaun. Just in the wrong country for it. Extreme weather is fun to watch develop . . . Most times. It really does show you the power of nature. 😁

Great film, Shaun! We lived in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years a while back. The heavy winds & rain remind me of the typhoons we experienced. Glad you found it exhilerating!

Man, I am from the southern US. Tornadoes are not fun,; neither are ice storms/freezing rain, and hurricanes. By the way, how can a guy that's scared to death of imaginary black bears be so nonchalant about dangerous storms?
Yep - I watched this and laughed in the voice of one who has routinely experienced all of the aforementioned in south Louisiana & upstate SC...as well as actually been less than a foot away from black bears. Bless his hearrrt! (Said in the most Southern way possible). Still love Shaun tho'!

Shaun - Great vid, from the storm to the after calm. I too saw you on BBC America which I had turned on expressly to see video of the storm, never expecting you find you there. Gradulations, way cool.
I'm a somewhat experienced storm chaser on the east coast USA, altho I prefer to see at it as the storm is chasing me, as I'm being as cautious as possible and yet still be out in it. Yeah, there's risk of being killed or seriously injured, but there are things you can do to minimize that risk. If you can get you hands on some US Football style shoulder pads and a helmet, that can be helpful. The smaller shoulder pads that NFL kickers wear will do, but the helmet should have as much grill work to it as possible. Either that or a full wrap motorcycle helmet will do.
As well, a standard issue solid life preserver (meaning not the inflatble ones) will not only help keep you afloat if you end up in the brink, but will help keep you warm and afford some nice protection to your ribs and kidneys, etc. Buy your foul weather gear at a maratime supply shop and your boots should not only be waterproof, but with steel toes.
I love strong storms as well. I am in Virginia US.

Nice model 3 at least it didn’t cost much for your drive up to Aviemore. You know we were there in 2021 Up at the ski car park but it was in Summer. It really is an area I don’t know well. It was stupidly busy when we were there that road beside the loch was solid with parked Cars.
I'll love the power of storms. I was in Hurricane Ida and was close to the eye, it was awesome. Then two weeks with out power and high heat. But it was worth it.

That snowy scene looks like here in Wisconsin. We just got our first lasting snow today. The Whight Season is here. I just looked up latitude for our respective locations. I am around 45, while Edinburgh is about 55. I wondered why the sun set earlier for you. About 4:30 PM this time of year.

At around 100 mph sustained winds this was equivalent to a Category 1 or 2 hurricane.

This storm was actually covered by our local television news and our national news as well.
It goes to show how powerful and unusual a storm like that is in that part of the world.
I think the major difference is we only ever have gusts to that speed - sustained was more like 40mp. Still crazy though. Thanks 😊
This is so surreal to see in Scotland. I'm in North Carolina and have been through my fair share of hurricanes, but I'm always amazed by the raw power of something like this in nature.

You never experienced the storms like in lower Alabama. Hurricane Michael winds where 140 - 170. Got through that . We get tornados. Some time 5 touch downs within a 15 mile radius.. But you learn to take precautions and adapt. Don't fool with mother nature.
I live in tornado alley and I like the idea of storm chasing till I wound all most in the path of a tornado. A storm was forming right over my head and unknowingly a funnel was forming also. Some one was watching over me that day. The tornado was only a F-1, small, but enough to get my attention. Please be careful when you do chase the weather. Mother nature, sometimes, will have no mercy.
Must admit, think I’d be ferried to see a real-life tornado. We don’t really get them here

We only got our power back yesterday. The forests round here look horrific. The police van was a mile from here, attending a fatality. I went out to move a tree and retreated rapidly. Worst I've ever seen.
