By day, Mark Hunter (Christian Slater) is a painfully shy new kid in a small Arizona town. But by night, he's Hard Harry, the cynical, uncensored DJ of a pirate radio station. Idolized by his high school classmates (who are unaware of his real identity), Harry becomes a hero with his fiercely funny monologues on sex, love, and rock and roll. But when he exposes the corrupt school principal, she calls in the FCC to shut Harry down. An outrageous rebel with a cause, Slater gives a brilliant performance as the reluctant hero who inspires his classmates to find their own voices of rebellion and individuality. @@danwroy I don't think the whole liberal/conservative thing has anything to do with it. It's a great film about a corrupt principal and a shy dude trying to feel less isolated in the world.

It's hard to impress on people who grew up with the internet how subversive and counter-culture was pirate radio in the 90s
“What is radio”? That is rhetorical response to kids who only know car stereos as platforms for mp3 music, videos, podcasts, and the like.
This movie should’ve won the Oscar for Best Use Of A Leonard Cohen Song In A Motion Picture.

This film was definitely a sleeper. Who knew that it would one day have a cult following? But it is actually surprisingly good. Christian Slater is mesmerizing here. And the storyline very accurately depicts teen angst taken to the extreme. It's hard to remember just how passionate kids' feelings and emotions were when I was I high school...that parents and teachers were the enemy and that rock-'n-roll and self-expression could "save us all." This is definitely a movie that everyone who has ever lived through those turbulent adolescent years should watch at least once.

I loved this movie so much I dubbed it from one VCR to another using a blank TDK cassette then started going to the library after school to see if I could build Hard harry's pirate radio setup. Can't imagine if the internet had existed then.

Christian Slater had a good little stretch there of being the good looking shy loner in movies that always got the babe, PUTV, untamed heart, gleaming the cube, bed of roses, true romance

I remember when this was being filmed in my old neighborhood in Saugus. My sister was going to Hubert Humphrey High A.K.A Saugus High when this was being filmed. My friend and I watched 1 of the chase scenes get filmed

Good movie, classic 80's teen revolution stuff but the Soundtrack is the real gem. Pixies - Wave of Mutation UK surf version, Henry Rollins with Bad Brains doing an Amazing cover of Kick out the Jams. One of Sonic Youths best songs Titanium Expose' .. Killer Rap track Above The Law-Freedom Of Speech and a sick Soundgarden b- side from the Louder than Love sessions
I would LOVE to see the reactions of people who never seen this movie. Especially one scene in particular. If you're as big a fan of this movie as I am than you know which scene I'm talking about.

When this movie was popular and christian wasn't super famous yet. I met him at the china delight at a restaurant and bar, he used the bathroom in Bellingham Washington. he was with two women and he stopped to talk to me, asked how I was doing and asked my name, but I knew I saw him somewhere. I didn't remember til days later. 😅 I was only 16 or 17 and I was the sober driver. I wished I knew I could have asked for his autograph 😊

Everyone in high-school needs to watch this movie this story really happened in Alamogordo high school minus the pirate radio station kids being purged out school to save tax dollars miss 3days school 3 strikes your out ot pulling kids out of class and telling them bring your grades up or your expelled! Then the alternative Ed school has more kids go to college there than the high-school so sad that nm education system is corrupt and afraid of the rich!
Why they never included any Leornard Cohen on the soundtrack compilation , no one knows
The Beastie Boys song mentioned as being left off their first album, that's not on the Pump Up the Volume soundtrack either.
I don't think Leonard Cohen signed off on soundtracks. In the movies ok, but not on the actual soundtracks. The Concrete Blonde cover is still pretty good.
I love this movie. I think it’s one of his best. I saw Christian Slater and Nicolas Cage in Oahu in the Summer of 2000 while they were there filming Windtalkers. I had a friend that got to meet him in 1993-4 during filming of Interview with a Vampire. She was the Creole woman singing and then the corpse under Claudia’s dolls. The girl she wanted to be like. She got to go to the party in London or Paris for the premiere. I live an hour and a half from New Orleans.
This movie got Christian Slater his role in Mr. Robot.
I did have this on VHS... only for me to realise that someone recorded over it with episodes of the Simpsons.
