18:48 that flicker might be because the display brightness is adjusted with PWM on those lowered brightness levels. Great to see the whole process to get this laptop running again
I have a similar laptop (Compal NCL60) that came with Core I3-380M CPU and 4G of DDR3 RAM when I bought it around 2011. After upgrades, and yearly cleaning, I had to retire it because its keyboard started to fail. With its final configuration (Core I5, 8G DDR3 RAM), it performed very well with Windows 7 Pro x64 until last year when its keyboard failed. Sadly, I can not find a suitable keyboard and to use it with a USB keyboard makes no sense, so I retired it until I would repair it. Even being old, first gen Core CPU, HM55 chipset, integrated Intel graphics, performed wery well; I was able to browse the internet, watch UA-cam, play old-ish games. I am glad you save it.
Finding something like this here, in Brazil, would be the same as finding gold thrown in the trash. Here we generally take what we can and fix it, and generally, it comes in the worst possible state, and without working, and we try to keep it working until the machine can no longer handle it. currently, my setup is a samsung np270e5e intel celeron 847, DDR3 8GB and it was also possible to fix it, it's not complete, it's basically just the case and the motherboard, but I was able to fix it and it's working fine. Excellent work with the restoration of this equipment, good job.
Not really. The thing about Brazil is that there are two countries superposed on the same space - one full of people going from rich to poor, and another full of people going from miserably poor to completely destitute. I consider myself to be fairly poor, but I'd still see a 1st gen i7 as only mildly above garbage. I'm from São Paulo, though.
Back in school I was dumpster diving with a good friend after school. That was about 5 years ago. You were able to find such good stuff, like MacBooks, modern phones or decent PCs. Today there are too many people dumpster diving here in Germany (even if it is illegal, but no one really cares). If you find a nice PC it was taken apart already and everything good is long gone. But you sometimes still find nice stuff like Bose bluetooth speakers (I have found two already).
Enjoyed that it takes me back when I was a field engineer repairing laptop s with similar and more complicated problems every day I miss the satisfaction but sadly I am retired now 25 years was enough look forward to your next video
Another fact that I didn't know about this machine is that it has the pch mounted on the housing, so that it works as a heatsink for it, it's something very interesting, since in many machines here, the pch is simply left unprotected and it will overheat over time, accelerating the end of its useful life. Of course this is not always the case, some are in fact designed to work this way, but for me, it would be interesting at least, for manufacturers to have such concern with these critical components, even though the current new generation of machines are completely disposable.
Toshiba/Asus's old laptop's frame is strong rather than modern laptop's brand's. also about keyboard. Really impressive, nowadays laptop's frame most of low grade plastic made & keyboard unfunctional after 2/3 years of use.
This ain't a trash. This is a treasure for many like me and us. Don't know why it was hacked and kept as trash. i7 processor with graphic card 😮 GTA 5 quite possible.
I picked up a Hp 15 from my local pawn shop . It had a 5 dollar price tag on it. So i asked about it and theu said the screen was broke. I bought it, brought it home, plugged it into my tv with the HDMI port and to my surprise it came right on. So i set the lid for the laptop to stay on. Turn the laptop off and took the screen off
I had same pb with an old pc with no official oem gpu drivers for windows 10, seems to be a lack of compatibilty with Win 10. Old device restoration is kind of gambing, but it's part of the game, and that's why we love it!
7:40 I am amazed as to how that laptop CPU & GPU combo is still alive, with that amount of dust. Quite often, with such extreme overheating, the CPU/GPU actually fry themselves and the laptop becomes totally dead. You got lucky there, I am amazed the CPU/GPU were still working.
@@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew Yeah I was surprised as well, most of the time when I see videos about laptop with that much dust (all of the heat fins are blocked) it's because the owner has brought it in for repair as it doesn't turn on. That means dead CPU or dead GPU (or both)! You got really lucky with that one... :D
You can ship these laptops to impoverished African countries, for example, to assist students in need. There are likely charity groups dedicated to this type of initiative.
An excellent restoration!👍👍 I also restore older computers and I find that they perform much better with a Linux OS., installed, I usually install Linux Mint Mate or Zorin OS., on 64 bit systems and LMDE 6 on 32 bit systems, I'm also trying Sparky Linux Mate on a spare computer and it works well so far. Support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025 and masses of computers will not be able to run Windows 11 unless a work around is used.
@@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew Yes, I concur and In my opinion, Linux is the way to go and I have been using Linux Mint Mate as my daily driver for many years now.
It's not recommended to use a vacuum on a motherboard due to static electricity, you'll be better off using an air based duster that doesn't suck air in. The static of the vacuum can discharge to the motherboard and will most likely kill something on it, otherwise, great video and good score of a laptop!
I keep finding i7 4790 systems, i found an i7 3770, an nvidia gt650, lots of radeon cards, an nvidia quadro, some old optiplex system with a pentium 4, unfortunately that one was water damaged tho, but i took the motherboard, a gpu, ram, and a hdd i got in a box of hdds that i had got for free, and built a pc with it all. It works great, i psired it with a CRT that i found in the trash and restored, along with an old keyboard, put it next to my bed, and now i can browse the web from my bed without chargung my laptop, or running power cords, its just always there
I have the bigger brother of this laptop, an Asus K72Jr, very nice laptop, with an ssd and 8 gigs of ram, it’s my daily driver. Also your display is not broken, it’s a driver issue amd never fixed and it’s present from windows 8 onwards.
Another thing you could do to improve it is put a AXE3000H (intel AX210 chip) wifi card in. I did this with a very similar Asus X52F and it works great. Otherwise, great work restoring a good old laptop!
I also have this same model of laptopK52JE got from some guy in romania offering me for 60 lei(around 13$) from some type of poor thrift store named talcioc it wasn't having a cd rom but I installed later and also no hard disk which I installed a 480GB kingson SSD(around 35$) also upgraded from 3GB to 4GB and I am happy to have this laptop with windows 7 because reminds of that 2010 era and use it for that era.
My first gaming laptop ah memories! Alot of the issues you mentioned I had aswell with this device. For the brightness issue: this laptop is certified to work with Windows 7 and use Drivers from that era. You might be able to fix that issue by going here and select Windows 7 64 bit and downloading ATI Graphics driver some older GPUs have functions that are only available when you use the "OEM driver".
I have no idea how you managed to recover this from the dead. I mean, good job, most people (myself included) would have just parted the laptop out and scrapped the rest.
That was a stunning repair from a dumpster excellent Andrew could you tell me the name of the music you play during repair I really like it thank you for sharing this video best regards Andy Allen.
I got 3 notebooks for free: Dell Vostro 1510, HP Elitebook 8440p and Lenovo L 420. All notebooks are running, very few things to do. I keep them for substitute.
Why? It still kicks with Windows, its first Gen Core CPU is way better than many think. I have a similar laptop that with Core I5 was usable until last year ( with Windows 7, 8.1 and 10) when its keyboard started to fail. That is not a low end laptop, it was actually high end when it was launched. I used it with slackware with KDE for one year and I must say that it was overkill, not once I saw the memory being used above 30% and the CPU was mostly idle or at max 40-50%, similar performance to Windows 7. And yes, I have at least 10 tabs open in Opera.
If it's windows, then it would be good for retro games, otherwise it would be a great redundant project laptop if it had linux, like 24/7 security etc.
I believe that is a first gen quad core i7. You actually might be able to upgrade to 16gb or ram even though the specs say the maximum is 8gb. I was able to do that with a dell e6410 with a quad core upgrade.
That depends on the chipset, usually the max memory is 8G. Mine, with 2x8G it would not boot and with one 8G memory it only finds 4G, depending on the RAM stick, the chipset is HM55.
Trust me...i have the same laptop the same specs...the amd gpu will become alive with every reflow haha. True. It could also be a low quality display too tho. A good number of displays weren't exactly the best back then. Lol
The flicker could also because of camera.
