There's something about playing GTA San Andreas on old machines like this at 4 by 3 aspect ratio that just feels right! Whenever I try to play it on new computers the graphics look dated but for some reason playing it on old computers and old screens makes it looks magical the way it was when I was a kid! Anyways, great restoration as always, thank you for bringing life to these old machines, you're an inspiration

Glad to see that this laptop is back in good order again - these older machines are great for older software. I believe that this machine would have originally ran Windows XP. And yes, the latest Firefox still installs on Windows 7, though Chrome is dropping support for both 7 and 8/8.1 shortly!
@@TheSpotify95 I remember, cos I still swore by Vista back in 2016 as it just worked for me. Hated windows 8 and 10. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft told them to drop vista support as well as XP, to try and get people to abandon their OS's that don't track you through the requirement of a ms account
This was great! Those Tecras were the top of the line models made for rich executives. It's fun to have these old devices that are excellent quality that I could never afford to buy when they were new. It's a bit like having a Rolls Royce. 😊
This is one of the best retro gaming laptops out there! Got my hands on one of these a while back and meant to do a disassembly and upgrade video on it, as there wasn’t one on UA-cam at the time. You beat me to it 😐 I may still do one, to increase awareness of how good this laptop is.
A very solid machine! I used two of them every day for 4 years, in a retail environment... They took a beating because they were necessarily stashed and locked away every night by tired, and careless personnel. So, yeah, Tecra are built to last!
This laptop reminds me of my first laptop which was a Toshiba satellite m45 from 2005 which i got from my dad in 2013. It was not powerful with a single core Pentium m processor clocked at 1.73ghz and a gig of dual channel ram and intel GMA graphics. But it was a fun one. I was just sooo excited and was on cloud 9 when I got the thing. Even though I purchased newer laptops which are waaay powerful than my old Toshiba, still I couldn't get the kind of excitement and happiness which I got back then. I still have her and have maintained her over the years. I used to play games like GTA SA, VC, 3, NFS MW, etc. Even 20 FPS felt like 60 FPS back then. Those were the days.
Hello Andrew, I follow your videos from Brazil, they are wonderful, I have a tip for you, to clean the "heat pipe" I use a metal polish that is sold in several countries, the name is "Brasso" it cleans and gives shine again to the metal of the "heat pipe" and increases the conductivity of the thermal paste when it cleans the contact area of the processor or integrated video card, maybe you can find it in the amazon store online.
i have one just like that old tecra.. in fact i have lots of tecras.. olds and new... i thik they stop doing tecra line 3 or 4 yrs ago... the one i have just like that i sold to a mechanic that need one to use XP to use only one program to restart car centralines and clean errors from the cars .. i sold it in 2018 for 80 euros working like he wants to... well another great video from Andrew.. i like to see your videos in my free times.. it´s something i like to do also. but you have patience to make all edition of video and i dont !!! that is good laptop that you got for free but not only that it was damaged but not too bad when you got repaired it show us that old can still bring us something good memory and enjoy how things, where back when the laptop where build like tanks to live on for many years ahaha is sad that new laptop are build faster and more but use cheap and smaller parts that are very sensitive much like our self, is that odd that old days we where not so sensitive to things but now we are much like new PC haha be careful I may break

Question, do you use Linux for restoring laptops instead of Windows? Because I think this laptop would be better with a Linux distro (just my opinion).
I agree with you, the linux is great for these older machines, but I used windows in windows because is more familiar and there are more stuff to test. anyway I will use linux in future videos as well

i have an old compaq pentium 4 laptop and it's a thick boy, but i watched a video on how to disassemble it so icould clean it and re apply thermal paste.....it is a desktop cpu after all and with doing all the maintenence and upgrades i could, it runs quiet and cool considering......it also has it's charm so i keep it.
Few years ago, I got a ThinkPad T43 (high end) without HDD and only have 512mb of ram, I used it as dummy laptop but then one day, for some reason, the display broke and I was really sad after that.
I'm replying to you on a Tekra A9 which has a C2D 2.50Mhz CPU, SSD and 4 Gb RAM and it's running Manjaro KDE beautifully. Only takes 30 minutes to install Manjaro and update it. How long did Win 7 take, 1, 2, 3 hours?
@@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew then it was a mistake by me, because the last and only time I put Win 7 onto a pc, it took most of the day to install update after update. I am not joking, it kept asking for updates. I can laugh now, but at the time it was just horrible. I can recommend Manjaro though, it's superb Talking of Firefox, do you use the 'Add On' NoScript? It allows you to control scripts on a website. It's a huge learning curve but well worth it. I wouldn't advise putting it on your primary computer though until you get your head around it. Andrew I do recomend getting artics MX4 paste as its a cheap but good thermal paste as I use it on my custom PC I built and tempretures stayed around 60C
I pretty much have the same but lower specs and the body is a bit different and with some proper cooling setup and software optimisation I can push the system to it's very limits. I've been waitin for almost my entire life for a gaming pc , now don't even know when I'll get one😓😔😔

The "highlighted zones" are more commonly known as "pressure marks" and there's not a lot that you can do to fix them other than to replace the screen completely. If you start to repair a laptop that has pressure marks then it is worth completing the installation and seeing how noticeable the marks are when the OS is up and running - in a lot of cases, you don't notice them that much once you start using the computer.
Hi, I'm using the standard ports on the laptop, like VGA, HDMI, etc. But when I use external graphic card I'm using device called EXP GDC, the EXP GDC is working trough Mini PCI-E, NGFF ( these are Wi-Fi ports ) Express Card slot ( for older laptops ) or M.2 for some newer. But EXP GDC is Not compatible with all laptops, just with some models.

Chrome denied support for High Sierra and Mojave! there is no way i am going to upgrade my MacBook's OS to Monterey!

This took me back in a day when I do smartphone repairs, we had tecras there to flash phones :)
a minimalist linux or other unix distribution would make these kind of machines still very usable (and more secure) for day to day tasks
@@jub8891 Revios11 or tiny11 is fine with 4(3)GB of Ram onto these tecras, I have 3 of them...Haiku os also a great choice

This would run well on Linux, a LTS edition like Red Hat or Alma Linux would give it long life now that Windows 7 is no longer supported.

Toshiba laptops have been around for a long time, I used to have one running dos 3.0, its a pitty they went out of business after win vista.
You can still buy Toshiba laptops, but they have been rebranded to Dynabook instead.

Win 7 took about 35-45 min, not counting the time for drivers installation

If you can upgrade cpu, some more ram and a ssd, it will be great again. You can always use linux which is great for old laptops.
