    I ended up loving this way more than I expected! Initially, I wasn’t sure I’d be into it, but as I got deeper into the story, I really started to care about the characters. For me, the genuine emotions came through the satire when it had too

    I enjoyed it. I hated Tindaro but I was happy when he realized that Dineo was making him sick, and I was proud of him putting others above himself at the end, same with Panfilo. I can definitely relate to Nefile, I mean what do you do while you are celibate but the urges are going nowhere 🤷🏾‍♀️ fine she was married but we know her arrangement was different. Pampenia is the only character I was pleased to see die

    I loved the series because of the richness of the characters in the backdrop of a period that was hard as hell to live in. Its true some characters were unlikable at the beginning because of the way that they treated others but it changes when truth and love enters into their life. They have such redeemable qualities and the series highlights what it means to suffer, to hurt at the hands of people that should be looking after you and ultimately what it means to forgive and to love. Like when Licisca runs back to save her sister after all the suffering she put her through, Misia for giving Pampinea her dowry to ensure that she would not die of starvation and ultimately Tindaro who was a man baby but who ultimately stepped up in the end and defended his love Stratilia and her son at the cost of his life. This show had everything for me humor, tragedy, love and heroism in all its chaotic imperfect perfections.10/10

    This miniseries is DEFINITELY not for everyone. It has a very dry sarcastic tone which is clearly aimed at millennials (who are being ridiculed in the guise of medieval nobility). Other than that, it is a very refreshing depiction of late medieval Italy with strong performances (especially the beautiful Zosia Mamet). It was a slow burn at first, but after the fourth or fifth episode, it really becomes focused and the ending is great. I can honestly say that I prefer it to season 2 of House of the Dragon, which has been a real disappointment !

      @@JustinWatchesMovies Yes, it has lost all momentum compared to season 1, it's like watching a race with 2 snails. Maybe the finale will have a few cards up its sleeve (like a huge battle).

    2:22 I was actually completely drawn to them THROUGH their "unlikeness". I loved that they are mean and unlikable. I love that they are so entitled and how life keeps punishing them for that. I am actually tired of characters who are "good" and "likable" and "doing the right thing". The series feels refreshingly honest about human nature in that sense.

    This is a typical American bumbling, fumbling, start nowhere, and end nowhere disaster. Attempts at creating a Life of Brian type sophisticated, witty, tongue-in-cheek romp, end in slapstick and throw-away nonsense not worthy of B rated vaudeville. All that was missing was a car chase. What a disservice to a magnificent piece of work

      I enjoyed it a lot and disagree with everything you say.
      I thought they showed a special type of love that Neifile and Panfilo had. I thought Tindaro's story had good growth and redemption. I thought Filomena and Misia's storylines were welll made. Both redeemed themselves a bit but not too much. Filomena did leave her father to die and never felt remorse about that. Misia did break free from her "captor" but she did betray everyone else when she gave her the dowry. Change is hard and it is never as grand as we wish it to be. The characters did change but not in some grand unbelievable way. Tindaro did't become a true worthy knight and slay all the bandits. I don't think he killed anyone at all, but he was brave at the end and gave his life to buy time for the woman he thought he truly loved and her son. Panfilo realized that he truly has nothing left on Earth to fight for, or stay, so again, all he could do was buy time for those who might still have something on earth worth living for and he dies holding his tru love Neifile. They did love each other, even though they cheated on each other and Panfilo was gay.
      I don't know why you though it" starts nowhere and ends nowhere" It was all logical to me and sequential

    As a historian one shouldn't expect too much from current historical fiction series. I personally didn't find it funny, it didn't give medieval vibes and it's just another product that has nothing to do with the real Decameron. The costumes were actually awful. Why making a series about that period if you don't wanna display the medieval?

    I liked it a lot, i think maybe it’s difficult for people to relate to these characters because of the extreme piousness of the time. The lust that drives people also could lead them to eternal damnation. All the while literally everyone they know and loved was dying. Everyone. So of course everyone thought god was giving mixed signals. They could’ve emphasized this a little more I guess. Aannnddd maybe the ending was a bit forced, not the neatest bow.
    What bothered me the most was the lack of any real nudity…. These a bawdy campfire tales. So much sex but no nudity? Odd choice.

    • @fobluv4lyfe

      A man was naked on screen for like 30 seconds in the water. Also, this isn't Game of Thrones, sexual arousal shouldn't be a point they should hit on for the audience. I think they did a great job of creating desire for characters but never felt the need to sexual arousal. Also, also, hard to make a naked person comedic.

    • @thefreeman986
      @thefreeman986 Місяць тому

      I think there’s a lot of comedies that would disagree nudity can’t be funny. And nudity being used only for arousal? I just disagree with that. And so does the source material. Which is a comedy.

    I won't say the characters are unlikeable, it's just the commonality of 1300s that makes the audiences ponder what silly things these folks do have to endure to stay alive in a pandemic "nobly"

    This show had nothing to say. At all. I truly believe it to be one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen. Which is a shame because I really quite enjoy some of the performances of the cast. I know they weren’t going for realism, but it didn’t have anything to say about the past or how we can reflect on our own recent pandemic. It was just any empty husk that made no sense. There was such a wealth of potential there but they didn’t even understand the title, leave alone the value of what it represented.

    • @tamiausten873
      @tamiausten873 Місяць тому +7

      It doesn't have to relate exactly to the recent pandemic to be related or have substance. It's not for everyone. I enjoyed it, I related to Nefile before and after her hoe era. I also felt it at the end when Jacopo talked about death. I've lost a lot of people since 2021 and I just realized that there have been times in history where people lost everything and everyone they knew and had to survive and restart life. It actually made me feel some hope. I was especially happy when Misia burnt that witch Pampenia up: of course it's a bit much but Misia had gotten a little crazy just trying to please her. And the relationship between Nefile and her husband is genuine to me, they had better understanding of their situation than most couples do, whatever the case,Panfilo was more hurt by the loss of a woman he wasn't attracted to than many men at the death of their kids mom🤦🏾‍♀️. If you don't get it, you just don't 🤷🏾‍♀️. It's like Americans complaining about Trevor Noah, we Africans love him because his jokes are a hit over here, especially the one about France being an African team in the football world cup

      @@tamiausten873 sorry, I must have misspoken. I was saying it didn’t have anything to say - not even about the most recent pandemic which is the closest parallel in history to what’s happening in the show. The only thing it keeps from the source material really is the character’s names, the setting and the title.
      The show doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be, or what its message is. It’s very meta-modernist - swinging back and forth between absurdity and sincerity. It’ll make one statement only to completely contradict five seconds later.
      For example, Neifile and Panfilo were endearing and it is shown that they had a true genuine love for each other despite him being gay and her being so devoutly religious. He is distraught about losing his wife and wracked with guilt because even in his last moment he lied to her, even if it was out of kindness and love. But then just moments later he’s passionately drawn to kissing Licisca during the battle. Heat of the moment, insanity whatever - sure in real life, something wild like that might happen. But this is a show that is not going for realism or sincerity all that often. It’s a TV show. So now, Neifile didn’t matter and his representation a a gay POC doesn’t matter either. It didn’t bring anything to the story at all to have him kiss Licisca, and kinda rubs out his storyline with Neifile. And this seems to happen consistently throughout the series - it borders on hysteria but seems to beg praise for being profound without ever achieving it.
      Also, Neifile didn’t have a hoe era. A woman embracing her sexuality (in light of knowledge that her husband is gay and will never provide that level of passion) doesn’t really make her a hoe. But I think that’s just our different generations using words differently. I just don’t like calling women hoes whether it’s cool these days or not. I’m sorry I just can’t get behind it anymore.
      Trevor Noah is pretty funny, I haven’t watched a lot of him but he seemed pretty easy to get.
      I got this show; but sometimes a show is just an entertaining mess. Bad but enjoyable. Telling someone that didn’t get it doesn’t change that.
      Edit: oh, and then it’s played for laughs - Panfilo using Neifile’s body and allowing it to be desecrated to scare off the invading group. He might not believe that matters, but people of that time - especially someone as religious as Neifile - would have seen that as desecration. So, I guess he only cares about her when it’s convenient?

    • @tamiausten873
      @tamiausten873 Місяць тому +2

      @@smallsignals ok then. I see what you mean. It's just like Insatiable, it didn't have moral lessons or any particular message and most of the characters were crazy but I've watched both seasons too many times 🤣🤣. Sometimes entertainment should be just that, nonsensical and enjoyable

    • @smallsignals
      @smallsignals Місяць тому +1

      @@tamiausten873 I agree. Insatiable, no problems with it having plot holes or logical inconsistencies. It’s not trying to take itself too seriously. But this show is trying to take prestige from an acclaimed literary work without bringing any value to it. Stuff can be irreverent - love that era where we were just putting zombies in random places. Like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. That was a crazy twist on the stuffy propriety of the regency era.
      Anyway. Nice chatting - I could go on forever about this topic. So, I will say farewell. All the best to you in Africa from myself here in Australia. Take care :)
