It’s just been confirmed that Ren and Chinchilla are collaborating on new songs - hurrah!!! 😁 Meanwhile, they have another duet you’ll love: How To Be Me (the live version). Best wishes
Regarding the Gallows lyrics that caught you. Ren has another song with the following lyrics: A bed where I never deep rest A bed where I'm always depressed A bed with a human oppressed A bed for a tomb where I slept. Lymes disease is a relatively minor disease when caught early. However, when lymes is allowed to fester for a long period of time, it confuses your immune system and tricks it into attacking your entire body instead of just bad cells. This confusion also results in the immune system attacking your brain if it gets bad enough. Ren went misdiagnosed for 7 years. During those 7 years he took countless medications to cure conditions that he never had. So, the medications resulted in new, worse symptoms he never should have had to deal with. The gallows lyric and the bed lyrics reflect that Ren never truly got any meaningful rest during those 7 years, even when he slept. He hurt 24/7, and his bed felt like a tomb where he was just waiting to die. It's hard to really understand just how bad his life was.
He was misdiagnosed as bipolar and medicated for it when he actually had Lyme disease. Suffered for years from not only the Lyme but the side effects of the psychiatric drugs he was given
Just my opinion: It's pretty clear that the chalk outlines are not being erased, it's the person as a result of the chalk outlines. You trace the outlines (take the medication) which makes you feel dead inside (erases you), which is why you "walk around in a floating chalk outline". "Take this one wash it down and you'll be fine" and "there's a pill for everything" is how patients are treated all of the time, as if it solves anything without knowing the exact reason for the illness. In Ren's case, he was prescribed drugs which were supposed to help and told that his very real physical pain was all in his head because they didn't find the real reason for it. As a result of this, Ren had almost no hope of ever getting better as he just kept getting sicker and sicker while the wrongly prescribed drugs not only didn't help, but actively hindered his condition while causing actual mental problems (psychosis); all the while the Lyme disease ravaged his body causing far more damage. The medical profession let him down severely, as it does with many people. It was thanks to his own perseverance that he was finally diagnosed and began to see hope, not that of the medical profession. Hope this helps.
We're probably about the same age and I'd pretty much given up on finding music that grabbed me the way Pink Floyd used to do - until Ren. For yet another genre he absolutely slays, check out his War Pigs mashup. He had a street busking band called The Big Push, so look for it under that name. Can Ren rock? Absolutely.
You are so lovely. Very warm & genuine. Much like our beloved Ren 😊 By the way, you will NEVER find a bad Ren video/song. No matter how old or new. And there is SO much more for you to discover. Please, PLEASE do more from him. Really enjoyed your reaction. Thankyou. Sending love from the U.K. 💕xx
Hello Angie. You're more than kind in your comments. Thank you. I'll definitely do more from him and I promise not to let so much time pass between reactions. Appreciate the listen!
If you want to be totally blown away… watch their duet ‘How to Be Me’! Also, please check out Chinchilla’s solo stuff - her live performance of ‘Fingers’.. she’s a powerhouse (and they’re now working on some new stuff’!! Great reaction.. thanks (from another ‘70s mind’)!!
Well that sunk deep this time. I had a friend try to commit suicide 2 days before Christmas. Luckily, she came to her senses and realized she'd taken way too many pills and got an ambulance in time. She was on life support for 2 days. So glad she's still here. She's got so many health, family, and mental issues. She's still here but I need to help her focus on the positives in her life and not the dark or bad side.
Oh no, that is so sad. But I'm so glad your friend has you in her life! You are obviously a very special, caring person.Even though I don't know either of you personally, I wish you all the best and will keep you in my prayers. Take care. Xx
What a lovely reaction 😊 As to offering any insight where the lyrics are concerned, Chalk Outlines was co-written by Chinchilla. From 2021 social media posts, she said: “Me and my friend Ren wrote this song about the effects and worries around mental illness and medication. Anxiety and mental illness can be so exhausting. It can be overwhelming and scary and lonely. You're not alone ❤” “For me, this song is about the feeling of holding ourselves together with pills and potions to numb the pain of of the current world. but occasionally feeling numbed from it all ourselves… Different 'antidotes' to counteract side effects of other 'antidotes' “ In addition to another of their duets “How To Be Me,” Ren and Chinny have more collabs in the pipeline. In the meantime, Chinchilla is a remarkable artist - her writing, producing, singing, and artistry put her right up there with the best of them (I’m talking Rihanna, Beyoncé, Sia, etc.). 2022 really tested her as she sought to break free from her former management and label (the same label Ren had been signed to). She channeled a lot of that rage into her recent singles - quoting her here again from a 2023 interview: Q, Could you share how your personal journey has influenced the messages and themes in your songs? A. I’ve always been about empowerment, my songs are often the words I haven’t been able to say in life. Or things I’m working out in my head, or a surge of emotions that I need to get out of my system. Last year when I split with my label and management I hit a really low point, and I really had to claw my way out of it - and I guess that’s where ‘Little Girl Gone’ came from. Hope you’ll check out some of her solo work. P.s. Another little video detail you’ll appreciate: look up the word for "scared of being ok" (i.e., phobia of being happy) and recall what you said about the chair 🙂
They're singing about Sertraline, an anti-depressant I was prescribed for 4 years. It describes the effects of the drug perfectly - it pretty much erases your emotional responses, you're present, but no more than a "chalk outline". For me the line, "I'm scared of being okay" is spot-on. You do get the occasional good day, but it only serves to remind you of what you're missing, whilst knowing that you'll return to that emotionless "flat-line" state in a day or two.
Great reaction!! You made a point about people being fed pills to solve the pain instead of finding the root cause..Ren made a short video some years ago where he reflected on this and the monetization for profit of the medical industry. There is money to be made in a sick patient...as they keep coming back for more of those pills...
Yes the drugs that the butcher, I mean the doctor prescribes makes them feel dead inside. So they are walking around in living chalk outlines(because the police use chalk to outline dead bodies). Erase can mean a couple of things in my opinion. 1.) You are coming off the drug and as it wears off you are more alive so the chalk lines erase since you don't feel dead anymore, just pain. 2.) Maybe you have been in the chalk outlines enough, walking around feeling dead that you don't want to feel like that any longer or feel anything else at all. That happens if you are not alive anymore, you have erased the chalk outlines because you are gone.
More ren. More ren and chinchilla. More chinchilla. We are all here for it!!! As you watch more many songs connect with each other. Hi ren and suck boi for example.
Ren was also in a band called the big push check out I shot the sheriff road to Zion hip-hop the version where he has on the red suspenders....and War pigs and much more great reaction btw 👍👍

This is a stunning performance and the lyrics are truly incredible. Very relatable for those of us with chronic health issues. Really enjoyed your reaction and looking forward to more Ren reactions ❤❤
Yes, you're right! He's a master at doing that...well, at least from what I've heard so far. He blows me away every time i hear a new song from him. This one was special! Very heartfelt.
Ren has so MANY incredible songs in so many different genres. Try Uninvited for a cheeky pop song, What You Want for a 90s throwback, the Tales of Jenny, Screech & Violet for Bardcore, Down on the Beat for hip hop with a driving club beat, Illest of Our Time, Wicked Ways, the Hunger, etc for rap, Why My Woman with his Band The Big Push for rock. The list goes on and on and on ...
Try sick boi for more on his journey during misdiagnosis. Try how to be me duet with chinchilla live. Soulful. His best friend committed s, this song is about this event. Chinchilla on her own is sparkling. Try Fingers live for hunger tv. Pianist is spectacular too. Then for a rocker watch official video of Little Girl Gone. Gosh, rhere is so much more. Some😅 of his songs are commentary on the world. Money game pt 1,2 &3 are amazing. For amazing storytelling watch The takes of Jenny and Screech, violets tale. Make sure to watch the one with all three in order. Serious topics. For just fun.......less "angst", Rens What you want is a nod to beastie boys. Fun song. Different weird rocker is animal flow. (Look for references to animal farm book) Ok....im sure others have ideas on where to go.
So I imagine that taking a pill puts to death your real self...leaving you the walking dead, hence the floating chalk outlines...standing on your tiptoes on the gallows means you are not quite dead yet, but your entire focus is just on breathing to stay alive...not a real life. Burying yourself in a "great big smile" leaves you dead and in the coffin with a smile on your face...tracing and erasing the chalk outlines causes me to imagine that we do it to ourselves, marking our deaths and then after the crime scene is finished erasing even the evidence of who we are. The bridge of the song matches nicely with the opening words...we wanted to wake up a new person, but even on a perfect day we take a pill and kill ourselves because we are afraid of change...yes things could get better, but they could get worse, better not to risk it. Just the random thoughts of another 70s person.
The references to pills in Ren’s music is all about his experiences with doctors misdiagnosing him and/or cavalierly prescribing multiple drugs and sending him on his way; time after time. Causing him to be a shadow of himself.
Erase ourselves in a chalk outline means that losing your identity and personality. It's numbing yourselves with medication because you can't handle being yourself. And burying yourself is just a slightly different way to say the same thing.
Heartbreaking and tragic - Ren X Chinchilla - How to be Me ua-cam.com/video/SDR7sup3DsU/v-deo.htmlsi=VphaZuAeV9U9V6mb which Ren wrote after his friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide at the age of just 19 (by jumping off the Menai bridge at around 3.00 a.m.on 28 December 2010 - his body has never been recovered). ☮❤Sea Point, Cape Town
I blame the doctors and pharmaceutical companies for making people more pill dependent......there is so many other remedies to make you feel better. IE eating healthier food, being more active and just changing your lifestyle and location....taking man made chemicals is really not naturally right.....

Get echoes of Velvet Underground and Jefferson

The line doesn't speak of erasing the chalk outlines. It's 'erase ourselves in these chalk outlines'. :)

Heck of a song, isn't it? They used to outline bodies in chalk at murder scenes, so if you look at the song in that context...
Chalk (calcium carbonate) is also a common filler in the pills we all take, including mental health meds.
