I lost my son to a supposed mental illness...he was 39...the angst and pleading and finally that great big smile....gives me goosebumps....it is perfection.
I like how Chris takes singing that would just sound like singing to the average person, but he takes it apart and breaks it down into bite-sized information for all of us. He really shows us how good Ren is, and how good he is at vocal analysis. Can we just take a moment to appreciate Chris?

One of the biggest struggles in life is being alone and waking up okay just to feel literally guilty for having a good day. Like you don't deserve it. Some crushing stuff, but Ren's music is pretty life saving tbh

Ren and his Big Push fellows are raising the bar for all musicians. If I ever go to a show. I'm not wearing makeup and bringing tissues..lol all of his stuff makes me feel good. Most of all Ren helps me feel like life can be fun again.

And if I'm not mistaken his father is a therapist/psychiatrist, so it makes sense he can sing so well, and can articulate and trigger emotions and the human condition so well.

This might be a weird comment, but it was so classy of you to take that moment to let analysis take the backseat for a moment to the emotion of that segment of their duet, I loved that you realized that it wasn't necessarily the moment for analytical mind, but to just get lost in it for a moment. Hi Ren has made me understand twenty one years of battling clinical depression better than a host of doctors, psychologists and councillors ever did! The tears literally flowed like salt water when the monologue arrived at the end❤️ This song is up there with Bohemian Rhapsody IMO👍

I found Ren a month ago, in finding Ren I found your channel which I'm loving. Now I'm finding you and Ren communicating......I love it. I want so badly for Ren to come out of this treatment feeling great. I'm not even joking I'll fly 3000 miles to see him perform live either by himself of his band. He is an incredible artist that has pulled me back into the deep love of music that I thought was lost somewhere at the end of the 90s. I'm playing guitar, writing and singing again. He is a true inspiration.
This song like so many of his song resonates with me on a deep, deep level.

Putting aside his gifts, the amount of work and attention to detail in Ren is colossal.
Also Buckley-ish: the vulnerability and pain that makes it sound like he’s literally dying in front of you and he’s hoping you’ll take this message to his family. The strength and control in his voice makes some really tender, low-power fade outs that maintain vibrato all the way through and peter out roughly but beautifully.

Thank you so much for this breakdown. My friend and I have been working on singing this one and those close harmonies are REALLY challenging. I'm not even trying to perfectly replicate what Chinchilla is doing, but even getting in the same ballpark is not easy. So much respect for the technical aspects of what on surface seems like quite a simple tune.

Great part of what is connecting in his songs are these so called "imperfections" that carry an almost cry-ish tone, which makes a lot of sense with the lyrics
Agree. I prefer vocals with a little rawness. Nowadays I feel like most artists just auto-tune the crap out of everything and all of the soul and humanity is drained from it..

The amount of soul he brings to this song is just out of this world.
Every time i hear this this song i just burst into tears during the acapella segment.
He really just has the most uncanny ability to pierce right into my soul.
The interaction here between Chinchilla and Ren makes it hit home so much harder because the connection they share of complete understanding of what they are singing and i can only assume that both of them have gone through very hard things in life to be able to embody the emotions to this degree.
You know how we talk about being on the same wavelength when talking about finding partners?
That wavelength is very real when it comes to understanding pain and suffering as well.
I might be biased because this song hits really close to home as someone who struggles daily for my entire life with mental health issues.
So the context of this song cuts deep into my soul and it is a perfect depiction of how it feels.
I think REN is the most poetic storyteller of our generation hands down, and Chinchilla is no slouch in this piece either, she really nails it.
You know it's much more than a song when you get the goosebump... it touches the soul, it's speak to our humanity.

Watching this gives me goosebumps. But I also feel like I violated their privacy. Like the intimacy is so great that I almost feel like a voyeur.
Ren is an GOAT and this song by both Ren and Chinchilla is one of the best songs I have ever heard and is in my mind, a it stands in terms of favorites of all time it is left only competing with other Ren Tunes which I literally cant pick a favorite from. He is just so inanely talented its unreal!
This video is sSOOO freaking powerful. The scene makes me picture 2 in-patient individuals supporting each other as they are suffering to their demons. Holding each other up and building off of each other. I love the storytelling through body language and the lyrics.

You have no idea how happy this makes me, two of my favourite and inspiring educators and performers meeting virtually. This is my favourite of Rena songs and this version alway makes me cry, with the emotion, performance and writing from both Ren and chinchilla. Ren has an amazing voice but you can tell he has come from a character inspired learning method rather than the “normal” way. I so hope you get a chance to work with Ren in the future.

He can do anything. He has a band The Big Push I shot the Sherrif\Road to Zion\Hip Hop is his Reggae side. The very next song from the same live set is a Warpigs cover where he turns into a Rock God. I have never heard an artist be this outstanding at so many completely different styles.

I feel that w/ these live performances, they’re not tryin to make everything sound 100% perfect. They want that raw & emotional sound to come through, which is y u sometimes hear little mess ups & Ren’s voice cracking. To me, hearing that enhances the experience & draws me in.
I went tone deaf and got tinnitus from a concert I went to years ago and gave up singing. Watching your videos has inspired me to try singing again, thank you for being so amazing and please never stop making videos.

Right there. I found a new emotion within myself that I didn't know existed until now. Such a powerful and beautiful moment.
By far, the best and most informative Ren reaction I've seen. When you said they were commiserating together it was powerful. We are so used to duets that are 'love' based but this was deeper, it was human connection together in challenge.
Brother, you observations & analysis of how incredible Ren is, is brilliant. Loved it.
The way their voices compliment the other in a perfect connection of dependency in the other. One would say it's the perfect duo, a masterclass per say! I love these guys together and I have found a new favorite in REN. My wife who usually hates this kind of music found a love for it too. My favorite REN song is "Violets Tale". That given he's already covered the others would make for a great next video.

Right at the peak of the emotional high in this song...right as Chris was having the biggest emotional connection...right as the tears were welling up in my eyes...UA-cam decided to interrupt with an ad for WalMart. Their lead vocalist, Floor Jansen, is a classically trained soprano and has a little training in opera. They have a lot of symphony in their music as well. The lyrics are deeply poetic and range thru many topics. I've never seen someone be able to relay the emotion and feels of a song so well, even through a screen, and still have it hit you after years. Her breathing and technique is amazing. She can do many styles from opera all the way to death growls. I think you'd really have a lot of great things to show through reacting to them. I would start with the Nightwish song Ghost Love Score Live from Wacken 2013. Just a suggestion! Thanks so much for your detailed breakdowns on the vocal aspects. You're so right! I see so many recommendations for singers who are technically perfect, in certain ways, and I'm usually left flat, exactly because there's no soul, there's no rawness, no edge, no real emotion. So many just mimic emotion and it just doesn't work, for me anyway. It's usually those slight imperfections that create perfection. Add in a little rawness and real character and I'm there. :)

Can we talk for a moment about the fact that this was a single shot video too. Some very deliberate focus pulls throughout. Made me feel like the camera was part of the performance too.
This song gives me the chills every single time I listen to it.
Such a fascinating breakdown for me as someone who is not musical at all, but appreciates and recognises great music even though I don't know how or why it has captivated me or given me the frisson- the way you sing and demonstrate the difference between how a flat note would convey and hold such less emotion than the way Ren tails off into a "head note" for example, gives me that "Ahh, I see, to something that was previously unexplainable to me.

Agreed. At 17, I discovered Buckley too late and spent years searching for every recording he ever made. Now I'm 40 and Ren is giving me that same feeling with completely different styles. Now I'm just praying for his recovery so I can find a way to watch him live.

Ren is such a talent. His back catalogue of music has so many hidden gems. People like to list the same few songs to react to but to be honest he has so much songs that are just as good as them or even better.
