When you start training martial arts and can't pull off those techniques in real time you're told you haven't been training them long or hard enough. But as time goes on, some people start to realize maybe it's the technique that's the problem
Your videos help people get to that awareness a whole lot sooner. Thank you!

I discovered right away that the techniques are just to be learning sequences and not exactly what's going to happen because every incident is different and everything that could happen going to happen so everything that's learned must always be modified.

Fighting is about fighting, training is about knowledge. Your opponent doesn't train so you are not training a technique to use it specifically, you are training to get discipline and understand a concept.

He speaks absolute truth. My favorite instructor made everything hurt. (There's a difference between hurt and injury). He would always say: whether you like it or not pain is your friend. It teaches you what to do, what not to do, and most importantly of all that you're still alive.

I was taught all these techniques by a well meaning sensei in Hapkido. He did, however, talk about modifying when necessary for the street. He would also add a kick or strike to these techniques as a distraction to take their mind off what your doing. For example, with the bear hug technique, he would stomp the foot first, then drop down. The choking technique, a quick slap while reaching across, maybe a backfist or punch. He said some instructors would use a loud kiai as a distraction then went on to say how wrong that was. His motto was, noise doesn't psyche a person mind, pain does. Not saying these are good techniques, I saw that eventually, but he did at least modify them to make them better. He would also say don't rely on one technique, learn to quickly flow from onwe technique to another. I am a black belt now and working on starting my own class, and I want it to be a bit more realistic and simple, a lot of the techniques I learned had way to many steps. You are speaking the truth though, glad i found your channel.

After over 50 years of training in martial arts, my realization is: Anyone doing a demo of any technique can make it work, if they are setting up and controlling the demo. Conversely, anyone doing a demo of any technique can show how it will fail, if they are setting up and controlling the demo. People don't attack or defend in slow motion. With distraction, timing and speed, techniques can work in real time that will not work in a demo. And it all too easy to show what you think doesn't work. It is harder to show something that will work, and cannot be countered. Because EVERY technique can be countered! Don't get self defense advice from the internet. Train under good instructors, learn what works for YOU, learn the counters to it, and the counters to the counters.

Love this had to sub the channel because the fact is people don’t train the way they used to! No heart no guts and no passion. Same thing I’ve been telling people is that most of what’s being shown now is not practical or real and as long as people keep training this way they will end up hurt.
I acquired my black belt over 30 years ago I don’t talk about it to no one unless I’m talking to someone of your calibre and experience and even it’s from the aspect of I don’t know anything so I can learn from the person because the truth is you never stop learning therefore you never stop training

God Bless Professor David, you are so right. The way you practice is the way you play, self-defense is no different. What you put in, is what you put out, if you train like your really fighting for your life, your body's muscles remembers the tensions, the strain. And when you do it enough time it becomes 2nd nature, so if God willing it comes, but if one day you'll have to give someone a beat down, you'll move so quick, you won't have to think about it.

Mad love n respect, sir! Complete injustice to teach people something or anything other than what they NEED in the REAL! Started with some Thai Kwon Do, till the instructor got on me about a spin n wheel kick! Said "I heard they develop this shit to kick people off of horses in wartime, and I aint never had issue with noone on a horse! Then primarily a boxer. Boxing doesnt get that garbage respect with different color belts, but even in boxing, dudes win a Walmart belt at every tournament for winning a 3 round amatuer bout. Anyway, real striking ain't till you sittin' n snappin' with some torque, like that sweet straight right to the chin you showed! Only needed to add some elbows, knees, and some holds I took from Hapkido/Jujitsu and Maui Thai. But, you said it, sir, GOTTA put THAT work in and make it all muscle memory. Its called SELF DEFENSE and its a crime when these decorated MASTERS teachin women, kids, shit, anyone some BS and send them OUT THERE believin they are safer! Like, how you disarm someone with a knife? You disable him! Love your energy and your message! First thing we teach these folk is "pull yer damn head out of the clouds, n know your environment! Vigilance and common sense alone keep most of these delusionals safer! I know YOU know that ol method called the KISS method! Keep it simple stupid! Throw all that flashy shit out the window ... BE FIRST if possible and send it with bad intentions. Expect The Unexpected ... shortest distance between two points? A straight line! And last, but not really, there ain't no rules out there! Represent, sir!

This is an excellent video showing the reality of knife defense. Someone who is in a rage will be stabbing you repetitively. Especially the ice pick swing coming from above, which is very difficult to intercept. In the dojo it's really child's play there is no pressure on the street its a life or death situation.

This video needs to be seen by all the fantasy self defense addict video watchers out there. The intensity of a real fight is not known by most. Fighting someone with a knife, high likelihood you're going to get cut even if you defend and avoid serious injury. But you might put them down with the right mindset and actions. Can you be aggressive? Can you practice self-offense? Learn from the teaching Prof. David is giving. Listen. Apply. Thank you David and Kenny.

Prof is absolutely 💯 💯💯💯 percent correct! There has never ever been a time that I have entered his dojo where my gi wasn't completely soaked when I left. There were exercise drills where you sometimes were so dizzy that you may have forgotten where you were for a bit! This has always been the way he worksout trains and instructs. He would always tell his students to just be prepared when you come here because you won't know what I will have you doing! And this is all well before internet and social media existed. He is the real real deal!!

I’m never going to say you should stop training. You just have to train smarter. In no way am I going to, at the age I am, going back on the mat and do the rolls or take the falls I used to. I’ve seen to many practitioners with their bodies so beat up that if ever in confrontation their at a loss. So you have to be in condition but not stupidly. But the Professor is💯when he says beware of the fakes. Because if you try it on the streets 😢😢😢….😊

I started martial arts training on a daily basis at age 13, and I'm 65 years old today, and I still train daily. I studied gymnastics in 1987, and my gymnastics teacher was also my martial arts instructor, and he told me a martial artist is only as good as the punch he can take. This is so true. I've seen many out of shape instructors with black belts and fat bellies. Their techniques were good, but all someone had to do was get a lucky punch in and it was all over. You are so right Professor David. You need to be in shape. Much love and respect to Professor David and Shihan Kenny.

A Blade is a contact weapon. If you get touched by it it cuts you and the Blade never stops moving? If you do not put something between the Bladed attacker and YOU then you will get eviscerated! Professor David James is right! Get smaller and find a way to get the attacker with the blade to over commit before you attempt a strike and disarm. If you can not find a obstacle then you need a shield at least (Chair..etc.)? Keep your arms turned in so that your wrist arteries do not get cut and becareful NOT to let them jab the knife into your shoulder Deltoid because that is where your Subclavian Artery is and it will also neutralize the arm as the Brachial Artery is there too! You are way behind the power curve when you are up aginst the knife or a Blade. Run if you can. I would. Get your Ham Shanks outta there! Professor David sorry about anything I said about OSS. I just thought it was just America and that what you do goes past Japanese Bowing IN and OUT Traditions and Ancestor worship. I believe no man is a Master over another Man and no man is Less either. The Japanese have Honorifics that as a Chan Buddist goes aginst this. I will bow to no Man but I will Honor a Great Teacher by saluting Him as a Warrior. Shinbutsu-Shugo is the Japanese fusion of Buddhism and Shintoism and worship the Kami in Either case. While Chan Buddhist veiw Siddhartha as a TEACHER and NOT a God! 3 Buddhist Sects are direct lineage to this idea of the World Teacher: Chan Buddism that is Shaolin. Seon Buddism that is Korean, and Zen Buddism that is Japanese that was opposed by most of Japan and the Emperors who are supposed to be the descendants of Amateratsu and Toke thier Japanese Gods. I see you as objective and as teacher. I want to Honor a Man who has walked his path through time and space and found the loopholes to do Kung Fu...the Folding of Time and Space. Your Journey in Time and Space intersects with those who will listen. Great Suff Professor. I wish I could get to 2 to 3 hours of training, but that would kill me in my condition. I do simple stuff as best I can as I have a degenerative disease. I count more on weapons (Force Multipliers) than I do empty handed because I will not fool myself that I am young or in good health. I will not lie to myself. Thank you Professor David James as this will also remind some of us the energy we really have and not to cast the illusion that we are an Athlete.

As a life long martial artist who wresled for 8 yrs, boxed, and grappled i can say with 💯 certainty that all of the self defense teachers are full of bs. Every last one, no matter the discipline.
