  • Have you ever looked at animal sperm under a microscope? Probably not. But if you had you would have seen a significant size difference depending on from which animal the sperm came. Even more surprising, the sperm seem to get bigger as the animals get smaller. Find out why in this video.

Instead, they only weaken the membrane enough for you to finally penetrate. So really, you did not win, but instead waited for others to make it easier for you to get victory after not doing much

You missed an important sperm type: attack sperm. These are highly specialized sperm cells which do not have the capability of fertilization. Rather, they exist to identify and destroy the sperm of other males. Humans still have the genes for this type of sperm, but it's presently disabled via the Epigenome. It's only of use in species where it's common for a female to have multiple simultaneous partners. In cases of monogamy, or even serial monogamy, it has no benefit and is therefore a waste of energy. While there are parts of the world where women traditionally have up to two husbands, they tend to brothers splitting on a dowry so because of close relationship there still isn't an advantage to reactivated attack sperm. The modern movement of polyamory might change that, but it's too soon to say.
Incidentally, the fact that the epigenome can disable such an important adaptation without it's loss so that it can be used later is an example of evolution in a non random way.
Other species of primates presently have attack sperm active, and of the attack sperm there are two know types. There are also other adaptations, such as variable volume to account for absence from a sexual partner, and the fact that females are more likely to be impregnated by the male that triggers an orgasm putting significant weight in her sexual preferences even in communities with multiple sexual partners.

Have you got any plans for making any more paleontology related videos in the future?

    • @factsinmotion3978
      @factsinmotion3978  6 років тому +9

The Evolution of different clades of animals is definitely something I wanna do. But with one video taking a week to make (currently) progress is really slow. I think I have to find a way to make shorter videos - maybe a paleo series where every video is only 2 min long so I would be able to do a few of them in between the regular videos. But so far I don't know how this would look like exactly. Keeping it short is not necessarily something I'm good at ; )

I think what you are trying to say is essentially the same as what the "metabolic constraint hypothesis " one of the two competing explanations for this phenomenon argued.
      - from the third link in the description:
"the metabolic constraint hypothesis maintains that ejaculates respond
positively to selection in small endothermic animals with high metabolic
rates, whereas low metabolic rates constrain their evolution in large
      species."
however, The results presented in this paper disprove this hypothesis.
"This gradual change in the relative investment in ejaculate traits
supports the sperm dilution hypothesis, but is not consistent with the
metabolic constraint hypothesis, thereby resolving the debate between
these two competing explanations of how body size affects patterns of
      sperm evolution"

Instead of watching this vid that says sperm like 20 time read my review,
Long sperm, Short in numbers- ideal for small mammals because of the size of their mate, can travel to egg most definitely and will impregnate quicker
Short sperm, Several in number -Ideal for larger mammals because some sperm won’t reach the egg due to large size of womb so will probably fail, but you have more so it’s all a follow the squad, at least there is a better chance of impregnating the female then sending a solo into a squad game to grab the victory royal

You would think that an animal, such as the mouse, that fertilizes multiple eggs each pregnancy, would need more sperm than animal, the elephant, that usually only fertilizes one to two eggs per pregnancy. One would think it would be the other way around. Such as the mouse releasing billions in one ejaculation as opposed to thousands.
