  • In Africa landmines still, claim thousands of lives every year. But astonishingly rats are now helping us to get rid of them - faster than ever before. But these specially trained rats, nicknamed 'HeroRATs, not only fight against landmines but also against Tuberculosis, one of the deadliest and most contagious diseases in the world and that way help to save tens of thousands of lives per year.

      @Scooters Videos Happily, I don't live in an area that has this problem. I guess you think the poor locals in these war-torn areas should just eat-shit, and get used to having their kids exploded by land-mines, coz then the rats are... in your opinion... happier.
      The truly weird part is, you've prolly convinced yourself you have the moral-high-ground, wanting humans to die instead of animals.
      Why don't YOU volunteer since YOU are the one who doesn't want rats doing this job. Personally, I think the rat idea is the best idea I've heard to solve this shitty problem.
      THE VIDEO CLEARLY STATED that rats aren't heavy enough to trigger the mines, AND they get rewarded for this work with a regular supply of banana treats. For the rats, it's no-risk, all-rewards arrangement, but you're STILL not happy.
      I bet you're one of the PETA freaks who thinks humans and animals should never interact in any way (except when PETA is shoving animals in their death-freezers, where they die in darkness, slowly and terrified).
      Keep your nasty refusal to co-operate with animals to yourself.

    I feel so glad that they don't kill or get rid of the rats that don't pass the tests. Keeping them around for the other rats to play with has got to be good for their morale and performance.

      pouched rats are extremely sensitive to change. while they are relatively popular exotic pets in many places (notably, Europe), it's well known that they are a full-on commitment, because rehoming them and being separated from them would cause them so much emotional distress that they die. similarly, being separated from cagemates and playmates --- so they have to, for their animals to perform their task correctly. it's not just good for them, it's necessary, life or death need for them. they're incredibly emotional.

      Depends on the rat. The common rat are pests, and bring a deadly disease with them if in contact with their fecal matter or urine. The giant rats are a little different, obviously. As with house rats. It really depends on which rat we're talking about, but the common one is the one that can be dangerous.

      People can be so smart that we're stupid at times. There are tests about that, actually: in a test to try and get the most food pellets, with no other rules explained prior, every time the lever was pressed when the light was one, a treat was received. The rats quickly learned to just keep mashing the lever, as there was no penalty for a false lever pull. The humans, meanwhile, kept trying to come up with how the game worked, so ended up missing more treats. We try to optimize even in situations where it's not optimal to do so

    • @AnimMouse

The point of my horribly written rant is: Give credit to how far we have gone instead of giving praise to a animal that doesn't deserve it.

    • @starandfox601
      @starandfox601 6 років тому +11

      1 the rats do deserve praise cause they are doing most the work.
      2 rats don't create diseases they just carrying them.most of the diseases they carry are actually the result of humans filth.the greatest example of our filth causing disease is the plague which started because we left corpses in the streets which the fleas drank the blood from and got the plague then the rats carried the fleas and so did live stock.yet the rats are blamed cause they are a easy scapegoat.
      3 it shows how foolish we are.many scientist scoff at the idea of using rats cause they consider them primitive and less effective then their technology cause as humans we have massive egos.yet they still haven't come up with a better solution then using a animal.

    Then instead of a "Class A Hero Rat" sweeping an area once, 2 or 3 different Class B rats could sweep it two or three times. The accuracy is still so high that missing one would be very, very, very unlikely.

The cost to remove mines could be reduced, some wild animals set off land mines it's kinda lame people think they can just take advantage of animals to do work for them and ignore how the cost of living could be cheaper to develop cheaper tech to detect bombs! This is so important, in New Zealand we make sure that none of our investments are in land mines because of the amount of harm it does to these communities. Mines also don't discriminate and kill innocent people as well.
