We use Rats to clear Minefields - Here's How

- In Africa landmines still, claim thousands of lives every year. But astonishingly rats are now helping us to get rid of them - faster than ever before. But these specially trained rats, nicknamed 'HeroRATs, not only fight against landmines but also against Tuberculosis, one of the deadliest and most contagious diseases in the world and that way help to save tens of thousands of lives per year.

I'm very impressed with the commitment to the star wars bit
For me, the time sense your comment at least 1 rat could've been trained to save hundreds of lives

Star wars dream was sick
The notion of putting sunblock on a rat is something I find oddly endearing.
Not sure if that pun was intentional or not...

@@TheTaintedWisdom I kind've see what you mean by unintentional pun, but it's a bit if a long throw.
Rats, the unsung heroes of the medical industry. People dont give animals enough credit for how smart they are...
Humans are the smart one. The rats are being trained to do that job by humans, using their quirk. They don't even know what they're doing

@Scooters Videos Wow. It looks easy and fun to non-constructively criticise without offering any improvements. Let me have a try...
You comment was shit.
@Scooters Videos Happily, I don't live in an area that has this problem. I guess you think the poor locals in these war-torn areas should just eat-shit, and get used to having their kids exploded by land-mines, coz then the rats are... in your opinion... happier.
The truly weird part is, you've prolly convinced yourself you have the moral-high-ground, wanting humans to die instead of animals.
Why don't YOU volunteer since YOU are the one who doesn't want rats doing this job. Personally, I think the rat idea is the best idea I've heard to solve this shitty problem.
THE VIDEO CLEARLY STATED that rats aren't heavy enough to trigger the mines, AND they get rewarded for this work with a regular supply of banana treats. For the rats, it's no-risk, all-rewards arrangement, but you're STILL not happy.
I bet you're one of the PETA freaks who thinks humans and animals should never interact in any way (except when PETA is shoving animals in their death-freezers, where they die in darkness, slowly and terrified).
Keep your nasty refusal to co-operate with animals to yourself.
I feel so glad that they don't kill or get rid of the rats that don't pass the tests. Keeping them around for the other rats to play with has got to be good for their morale and performance.
Joel Kennedy physical play is a need for mammalian life.
pouched rats are extremely sensitive to change. while they are relatively popular exotic pets in many places (notably, Europe), it's well known that they are a full-on commitment, because rehoming them and being separated from them would cause them so much emotional distress that they die. similarly, being separated from cagemates and playmates --- so they have to, for their animals to perform their task correctly. it's not just good for them, it's necessary, life or death need for them. they're incredibly emotional.
Let's form an union to protect them
I don't know, sounds like deminer or sex slave to me.
If I was a idiot then I'd believe that as well...
Medieval times: Rats bring nothing but death and dicease
Modern times: Rats can save people, lets use them!!
Depends on the rat. The common rat are pests, and bring a deadly disease with them if in contact with their fecal matter or urine. The giant rats are a little different, obviously. As with house rats. It really depends on which rat we're talking about, but the common one is the one that can be dangerous.
When I saw the title I though that the rats would just run around and set off mines. I'm crazy
Gneo Salen yeah.. and it would have been well deserved too
frankly, i do feel that there might be some way of doing that. just not with rats. perhaps some sort of heavy steel rolling robot that is rugged enough to shrug off the mine explosions.
No your not you can tell by the thumbnail he intended for you think of it that way so he can get people to click on his video
Dogs with explosives attached to them were used in WW2 and were trained to smell and go after the opponents fuel source in the tanks. Backfired and resulted in friendly fire.

YEAH I WAS WONDERING TOO. WTF.
i was looking for this comment xD
Even a rat knows that Tidepods arent food.
People can be so smart that we're stupid at times. There are tests about that, actually: in a test to try and get the most food pellets, with no other rules explained prior, every time the lever was pressed when the light was one, a treat was received. The rats quickly learned to just keep mashing the lever, as there was no penalty for a false lever pull. The humans, meanwhile, kept trying to come up with how the game worked, so ended up missing more treats. We try to optimize even in situations where it's not optimal to do so
spindash64 Well, if only life today dosen't give consequences when we pulled the wrong lever, then we humans no need to optimize anything.
But a perfectly intelligent human being decides this is okay to eat
Blu501
As I said before, we rationalize ourselves into a corner a lot. It’s kind of the reason wars happen even when we all agree that they’re kinda a stupid way to settle disputes

I guess these mines were... *ratted* out!

Theres me thinking you get a handful of rats, release them into the wild, let them run away and watch them blow up as they trigger the mines.
If you'd watched the video, you'd know that the rats aren't heavy enough to trigger the mines.

Very great video. I think I see what you mean by getting carried away. Awesome job.
Thanks!
OMG, this is amazing! Outstanding animation work, and I loved the Star Rats bit! (and the tide pod reference too, of course ;P) What's not great is all the mines that are still around, war is just sad... but it's relieving to know that people are finding solutions to that problem, even with the little means they have.
Loved the Rat Star Wars... "It's a trap!"
This video took a bit longer. I got a little carried away halfway through ; )
Facts in Motion nice video as always! Glad I've found this channel before it blows up :)
Facts in Motion no worries, always looking forward to your videos. Your channel deserves more subs for your good content. Hard to find something as original as yours on UA-cam!
Ratten sind ein toller erster schritt, sobald die anfangen Reptilien aus zu bilden, bewerbe ich mich dann auch als Trainer :-D
Und wie immer; tolles Video! Mach weiter so!
I LOVE THE VOICE!
That ending was fabulous haha
It is bewildering to think as to how rats can contribute more to humanity than a percentage of actual humans.
Not to absolve you from your contributions as well Facts in Motion! 😀
Abyssinia Empire Yeah.... a couple hundred rats vs thousands of people.... im sorry but I'm getting sick and tired of "oh animal x are better then humans." no they are not. The rats don't even know what they are doing or what a mine id, they are only seeking a reward (food). Rats have also been behind many diseases in Europe and are a health hazard everywhere.
Can't decide wether to downvote you for down playing this achievement or upvote because in some ways you are right and I agree mostly with what your saying
Evan Pearson I don't see where the achievement is being downplayed
Evan Pearson not downplaying the achievement, I'm simply saying that its the *humans* who have accomplished this not a animal that doesn't even know what it's doing. The point of my horribly written rant is: Give credit to how far we have gone instead of giving praise to a animal that doesn't deserve it.
1 the rats do deserve praise cause they are doing most the work.
2 rats don't create diseases they just carrying them.most of the diseases they carry are actually the result of humans filth.the greatest example of our filth causing disease is the plague which started because we left corpses in the streets which the fleas drank the blood from and got the plague then the rats carried the fleas and so did live stock.yet the rats are blamed cause they are a easy scapegoat.
3 it shows how foolish we are.many scientist scoff at the idea of using rats cause they consider them primitive and less effective then their technology cause as humans we have massive egos.yet they still haven't come up with a better solution then using a animal.
5:38 Now that's just adorable.
Bro, your videos are more than amazing! I can’t believe how you don’t have millions of subs already... keep up the good work!
Thanks!
You can adopt and name the hero rats online. Supporting the clearance of land mines or detection of TB.
Marrick Curia you don’t actually bring it to school. You just give them a donation. As a reward you name a rat. You don’t keep it. It stays in Africa. Forever.
which is slightly less cool, but has better odds of getting people like my dad to pay money, since worst case scenario, there's one less rat
he REALLY does not like rodents. Farm kid
Who else wants to see the entire Star Wars movies made by Facts In Motion?
I have a life you know ; )
But maybe I will finish the death star attack at least. The only problem is copyright ofc. So not sure if I should do it - yet.
It's bound to better than this last peace of crap in Star Wars franchise, so yeah, there will be copyright problems...
When the copyright issue comes to mind, I think of the Micky Mouse off of southpark cartoon.
All of the characters have to be rats or rat like aliens
@@factsinmotion3978 as long you don't use the names for it. You vud also change its color and maybe a bit of the shape too.
Sonic the hedgehogs dr. Robotnik has alao a death star. Named the Death egg. Its the same in shape but has a robotnik face on it to change it enough to avoid copyright.
I love this video, it's a sense of hope and a new way of looking at rat's other then seeing them as filthy pests.
Your English is impeccable , your voice is so soothing, and your video is amazing! Thank you so much for teaching this it really made my day...
What an amazing story this is. Back in the day the rat use to be the destroyer and bringer of death but now it has become not only a protector but a savoir of mankind!!!
All Hail The animals that eat our clothes, chesse and mines
They don't even like cheese
Knight rats don’t eat cheese.
rats will eat just about everything but cheese is less favorable. If you leave a mouse in an indestructible box with a bunch of cables & cheese they will eat the cheese after it completely munched all of the cable insulation.
what they really seem to like is chocolate. My parents occassionally left bits of chocolate truffles (completely different from the tree root mushroom) in the mousetraps to get them, and when that's not available, peanut butter
it's funny because the animal that, in my experience, REALLY loves cheese is the dog. granted, they're not picky to begin with, but they REALLY seem to like cheese. The stinkier the better
spindash64 have you try peanut butter yet?
I've never commented on anything on UA-cam. This is awesome. Researched around what you claim and all seems legit. Great job. Keep up the hard work and educational clips. Cheers. PS. Love star wars references and humour
The Apopo guy had given a TED talk years ago. At the time it sounded promising, but wasn't employed at scale. Glad to hear that it has been a successful and expanding program since.

In other words, soon we will see a new species of rats that would be completly domesticated just like dogs and cats. lol
Rats have been completely domesticated already. They just aren't common pets that you see often. I am a proud rat owner myself, and would recommend them to anybody.

yes! buy rats, they help with depression, anxiety, they’re a little therapist that sits on your shoulder and they’re way cuter and nicer than a cat 👌👌
I had a pet rat as a child. Greatest pet I ever had
Except that we do already. They're just not popular, but they are really great pets.
"New species of rats" is what they said. But what I researched, pouched rats are already pets in some countries. It seems that due to a monkeypox outbreak in 2003, the US goverment prohibited the import and sale/trade of pouched rats.
Heh; never thought cute little rodents were being used and are still being used to save millions of lives for those who are struggling with nonstop war and third-world diseases. Knowing this made me slightly more happy and hopeful for humanity's future :'P

I wonder why it isn't they don't have "Class B HeroRats"?
Then instead of a "Class A Hero Rat" sweeping an area once, 2 or 3 different Class B rats could sweep it two or three times. The accuracy is still so high that missing one would be very, very, very unlikely.
I bet they are breeding the Class A rats too.
