Only in the DF comments can we see backwards compatibility being slagged off. It is a great feature and it is free. Just because a game is a few years old doesn't mean it is suddenly shit. If all you care about is the latest release you are missing out on some fantastic games.

As a PC player, I whole-heartedly agree with you. I still play games released well into the early 90s. I'm happy for Xbox One users.
SteelScooter To right a good game never gets old and is always playable no matter how many years later, i still enjoy games as far back as Snes and Megadrive and i still have all my PS2, PS3 and Original Xbox and Xbox360 collection which i still play today as for storage goes thats no longer an issue with either of the current Gen consoles as everything can be stored on external hdd so when one drive is full replace it with another, there is really no need to delete anything especially if your collection consists mostly of digital games.
The only people who slag it off are PS4 fanboys, I like the PS4 but some of the diehard fans are ridiculous! They slag off Backwards Compatibility simply because they don't get it yet if Sony suddenly did offer it, then they would praise it like it's the best feature ever. I do have a PS4 mainly for exclusives and some online gaming with friends who own PS4. But I got an Xbox One S and play it a lot more, I like the controller more, I love I can play Xbox One and many Xbox 360 titles on one console :) I've been enjoying a lot more older games anyway whether it's a 360 title of a remaster of a previous title. Out of all the new games I have right now, the only ones I am enjoying the most are Mafia 3 and Wildlands, not to say other games are bad though but I've been playing games on Xbox One like GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, Bully, Black Ops, now Black Ops 2 and many more! I am grateful for Backwards compatibility :P So yeah PS4 fanboys need to stop with all the bickering and just let Xbox players enjoy something! They are just jealous :/ They reply with comments like "Who wants to play old games anyway?" and why not? :/ These games hold a lot of memories and it's great to revisit them!

Absolutely. Replaying Red Dead on Xbone and being able to enjoy cutscenes that run above 20fps, and take screenshots was a great experience.

@@MrGoldenfresh Well yes, but on X360 it managed to (mostly) hit 60fps. Most games on current gen usually run at 1080p or lower (if we're talking base systems) and at 30fps. If something like Black Ops II could hit 60fps on 360/PS3, then most other current gen games should be able to hit 60fps on modern machines, especially since I can run most current gen games at 1080p60 on my $500 gaming PC. The problem is, though, devs don't want to properly optimize their games properly for current gen systems. They'd rather just throw lazy ports from the PC version onto modern consoles, lock the framerate to 30, and call it a day. That's a huge problem since most budget brand PCs today can run these same games at 1080p60 while current gen (base) systems struggle with 900p30.
Backwards compatibility is awesome because i never had a 360, so now with my One S i have 2 consoles for the price of one, same deal with my Wii, i can enjoy 4 generations of great Nintendo & XBOX games with just 2 machines

This is pretty much the reason i play on pc, being able to play your pc childhood games on the same machine as newer titles is amazing, i am really glad xbox does this for their players (let alone for free, unlike playstation, seriously fuck psnow).

Black Ops 2 had 130,000+ online yesterday. That's phenomenal! The game looks & plays superbly.
There are plenty of brand new games to play, it's just nice our old games don't get left behind or locked behind a payed streaming service (PS Now).

It's a technical analysis channel, people who are genuinely interested in the performance of tech will watch every DF video, it's not up to you to dictate who can watch what. Don't have a PC? No one is telling you you're not welcome to watch the PC analysis videos, you shouldn't even be interested and stick to console videos.

backwards compatibility is a great feature. The playstation is seriously missing out on it. It's one of the many features that make XBOX a better investment.

Sure Sony has nice games like Uncharted, Last of Us, and Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Microsoft has nice games like Halo, and Gears of War.
And no doubt PC will run the game better, better hardware.

I think you should have tried zombies mode in 4 player splitscreen and show us how much of an improvement the Xbox one is. That is where you will find the framerate dropping the most.

Red Twintails like playable now. I cannot say how many framerates it has but I can say that it was more stable for every player. (not 60 fps tough)
It's nice that Microsoft are supporting retro-compatibility. I hope they will add Xbox Original to the list. I'd love a convenient way to play awesome gems like Genma Onimusha, Enclave, Dark Alliance 1 & 2, Jet Set Radio Future, or the Conker remake.
Though of course I'd also love remastered versions of those games on all platforms... especially Dark Alliance...
I've been meaning to track down a copy of Dark Alliance lately to play it with my partner. I don't know why, but I just really feel like playing it.
In addition to the ones you mentioned, two more Xbox Originals I really want to see on Xbox One: Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Crimson Skies! The PAL version of Panzer Dragoon Orta is unfortunately broken on Xbox 360 BC, but Crimson Skies runs pretty well at least.

@SheepyTina : Dark Alliance is such a fun Action RPG and it's cherished by many. I've been thinking of tracking down a copy of each one in the past couple of years now, but I just always think "surely they'll just re-release them somewhere"... I'm sure a lot of people would be really happy to see a HD Collection of those two games on X1/PS4/Switch/PC. Would be perfect on the Switch actually. A game like this on the go would be awesome.
The X1 isn't really similar to the original Xbox at all, it has far more in common with 360 (in terms of internal design X1 is the natural evolution of 360). The PS4 is more similar to the original Xbox.
Also it's packed full of custom tech which makes it notoriously hard to emulate, it's a miracle they got as far as they did with 360.

Hey DF, nice video as always. But you seem to have missed that there is something wrong with the AA in the emulated version on Xbox One. It seems to be missing on the vertical edges. Perhaps you could investigate?
Has anyone else noticed the glitch on xbox one where MSAA seems to be missing on vertical edges? It makes the game look a bit more jagged than the 360 version. I hope they can fix it. Please like this so they can see the problem!

I love your channel. Small request: for future comparison videos could you please stick to a standard for side-by-side comparison footage where the legacy hardware is on the left and the new hardware is on the right? It seems to be very inconsistent video to video and even for Xbox One vs Xbox 360 videos, the differentiation between the colors is so minimal that anyone with mild color blindness will be unable to discern them between one another.

Please do a Civilization Revolution back compat analysis video. There's certain portions that hit 60fps that I didn't know that could hit that while drops to 30 or lower when there's multiple cities or units around.

DIgital Foundry could you please test the FX 8300 @4.5 vs Ryzen 5 when you're gonna review it ? The 100$ FX chip performs similar to the newer R5 chips when overclocked which is really interesting as I have studied.

If you know anything about how things work in real work you wouldn't say that. Write a PS3 emulator that runs well on weak x86 hardware and then you can say shit like that. The other option would have been PS3 inside the PS4 and the price tag at least of 700 bucks.
You know that PS2 had the original PSX inside? The first model of PS3 had PS2 inside, the second one had a software emulator with shitty compatibility? And after that, they dropped it. All PS3s play PSX games because it's easy to emulate. The Mega Drive had Master System inside? Wii is the same system as GC just overclocked. Wii U is basically just Wii but more powerful. 360 had shitty Xbox emulation that needed game by game support like the one they have now on Xone.
It would be stupid and expensive to try to have PS3 backwards compatibility on PS3, don't get me wrong, it would be nice but not worth it. I rather take the cheaper new console and actual new games. If I really want to play the older games I still have the actual systems to do so.

Jamal Tahir - The PS3's architecture was way more complex than the 360, so it would be pretty much impossible for the PS4 to emulate it with software. If they stuck a Cell inside the PS4, maybe it would have been possible, but that didn't happen.

Last week, I woke up, turned on my cellphone, and accidentally opened the UA-cam app, and when browsing down a little bit out of curiosity, I find this video uploaded. When I saw it, I was thinking, "No way! Did Activision FINALLY give us Black Ops 2 backwards compatible on Xbox One?" I check the video, and yes, it was made backwards compatible.
The point of this comment is to thank Digital Foundry for making this video, without it, I would have not woke up my best friend out of his sleep just to play the game together (and also I like how these videos show up what the Xbox One improved in terms of performance for the backwards compatible Xbox 360 games, so keep it up guys), and yeah, he nearly went on a rage for me waking him up, but since it was Black Ops 2, he was more happy than angry.
Once again, thank you Digital Foundry for making this video.
Something that I noticed when Ghosts came out was that the asset quality took a big plunge between it and Blops 2. You can tell that they built Blops 2 for consoles that they knew inside and out, whereas they were still coming to grips with PS4 and Xbox One when they were making Ghosts.
Xbox is the best box, and this is why.

nah xb1 is still barely doing better than 360 because of rendering accuracy. those 1.3TF are nearly in full use.

It doesn't work like that. It's the same game on Xbox One as it was on Xbox 360 and it will be the same on the Scorpio. Just because the hardware is more powerful doesn't mean it will magically change the resolution. It was made as a 720p game, not a 1080p game. The only way that could happen is if it was a dynamic resolution game but even then, the cap would be whatever the devs developed it at!

I'm most definitely gonna be playing some Black Ops 2 on the X1. Some zombies some campaign, and of course multiplayer. A game actually worth going back to visit. I was actually playing it on my 360 couple months back, and now it's bc on x1 so that's awesome.

Easier for sure, it was pretty close to general hardware separating GPU and CPU loads. The Hype would be real if they work some sort of magic and announce Backwards Compatible at E3 but I'll remain on the side of Impossible for now, I like being proven wrong. Just thinking of Emulating to Cell Processor with PS4 hardware hurts, the coreSPEs may even outperform Jaguar at some task regardless of it's newer and more standard feature-set. It'll be interesting to see how the fidelity improves when running on Xbox Project Scorpio, what w/its extra power & 16xAA on all their titles, even backwards-compatible ones. Hope Digital Foundry goes back to this & other major b/c titles & does an analysis on that hardware as soon as it comes out!

You can’t deny that developers really pushed every bit of processing power out of the last generation towards the end of the lifestyle. It shows in GTA V, The Last of Us, CoD Ghosts, CoD Black Ops II, Battlefield 3 & many more of that early 2010s.

Wii U is more powerful than 360 and so is PS3, it's the developer's fault really.
Yeah, given that it's a launch title, it's really not surprising that the port isn't quite as optimised compared to 360 and PS3, which have had many generations of Call of Duty to iterate on.
I'd say Wii U is probably more powerful overall (just look at Mario Kart 8, Smash 4 or Zelda: Breath of the Wild!), but that said it has a different set of quirks compared to 360 and PS3, notably its lacking CPU power, so extra optimisation is required for multiplatform titles to achieve the same level of performance.
Other games like Need for Speed looked and ran better than the PS3/360 versions. The Wii U was not underpowered compared to the 360, this game was just unoptimized because it was a launch title.

Yeah, but the basic problem is constant maintainance. If not for that, PC is the best system. I own both PC and Xbox and both have delighted me in different way. My friends pursued me to buy ps4 instead but I saw Game Pass and I immediately knew what to buy.

It seems like the anti aliasing is broken on Xbox one. When switching between the 360 version and Xbox one the 360 has less jaggies and looks better.
